Hey guys, I’m 3.5 years without porn. It’s awesome. It saved my marriage and sex life. I’ve lost 20 pounds of fat, I work out six days a week and I’ve figured out how to enjoy my work. Porn was a total waste of time and resources for me. Cutting it out of my life is one of the best things I’ve ever done.

I agree porn is a gigantic waste of time. I recently stopped doing porn and masturbation for 38 days, and during that time I went back to school, bought the electric guitar I always wanted, practiced every day and learned three rock solos, went back to the gym, lost eight pounds...my productivity went off the chart, all from stopping the utterly time-wasting activity of porn obsession.

    Dr Trish
You have opened the door of my past from boyhood to mature senior citizen. I am in my seventies and I have a great deal of shame for all these years of masturbating and avoiding truly intimate relationships with my previous girlfriends. I was almost married twice, but because of sexual addiction I never thought I would be happy with one woman. How wrong I was to believe that my problems were external and not in my own head. Your approach to this topic of pornography is so simplistic and direct. Your devotion to helping people can clearly be felt through the many videos on RUclips. I hope one day to meet you personally. In my early teens, I fell into a deep, deep black hole after investigating whether it was beneficial for you and whether there were any harmful side effects. Every article I read highlighted how "practice makes perfect," how it's "good to know yourself," and "how it enhanced testosterone levels," and I went deeper than singularity later in my mid-teens when I heard from another teen that masturbation reduced sperm count and made it impossible to get someone pregnant. So I went to town, I had a girlfriend at the time. She never got pregnant because she had ovulation problems, and I assumed it was due to my masturbation. Now in my 30s, I'm beginning to crawl out of this black hole that began last year. Everything you've said, Dr. Trish, has been my experience: brain fog, anxiety, and poor memory. Knowing I caused this to myself has been hell.

You've inspired me to try again, and I'm feeling better for the time being. I'm about to message another hundred women in search for a partner, knowing that this could take years. Masturbation never made me feel bad... it helped to take away the long-term pain of having a family that never supported me, and being in the present position of having no family. My father would react angrily whenever I asked him for advice about women, ordering me to "stay away from them because they are dangerous distractions, and never bring one home!" So I've had problems with women for the past 47 years, and have been learning and unlearning what I can to help make me a capable partner to share mutual support with a high quality woman. Spring works better for this since it's time to spend more time outside and get in better physical and neurological shape. It's been two years since my past partner left me... and I've rarely had any visitors or even a hug since... long enough, I deserve better!

I appreciate the informative videos you put out on quitting masturbation addiction. Over the past two years now I’ve slowly reduced porn to the point where I no longer needed it and when I saw your videos on exactly what happens to the brain on masturbation it helped me to be educated on the same issues I was going through.
What I’m doing now is that some of my friends are religious and follow lent so I decided personally to give up porn for this time as a challenge but since others are giving up something challenging to them it felt like a good thing to do. In this time I’ve found out that I do have strength to move forward and it seems easier doing this as a way to connect better with my own religion/ spirituality. But if your not religious you can do it as a challenge with friends and support each other.
However, the thing I’m experiencing is sometimes struggle with motivation but I keep going because I want to be my authentic self instead of being in survival self which happened to my emotional side due to family stresses but found out that eventually I will need to cross this bridge from survival to authentic self eventually and having different support systems such as a therapist or friends that care for you really is a great motivator. And for anyone feeling alone, I’ve realized it is important to give yourself whatever you need and creating some goal that helps you to feel better and overcome a small barrier that has pushed you back from your true self whatever that is for you.

Thank you so much for posting this video Dr. Leigh. You really did hit the nail straight down. This is exactly what I needed to hear and I have to admit that this is exactly what I wanted to hear as well. The reason for that is because I have been addicted to masturbation for about 30 years now. Back in the day, there was no internet in my house, so I relied on the late night HBO movies on Friday nights that my parents had with cable. I also watched the “Pay-Per-View” channels that my parents never purchased (Playboy and Spice). I would watch the scrambled lines on the screen to see if I can make something out. When my parents first got the internet in the late/mid 90s, that was when it all took a turn for the worst. I looked at porn quite frequently since the late 90s and still have those sex images and videos ingrained into my head. I continued with porn throughout the 2000s when I was in college and the 2010s and still to this day. It’s very tempting because I have porn in my pocket (my iPhone). I never really noticed the damage that the constant cycle of porn and masturbation had until I tried to have sex with my wife (then girlfriend). I could never get any type of erection. At the time she thought that I wasn’t attracted to her and on top of that, she wanted me to feel bad. She even compared me to some former guys she had sex with in her earlier years…..which was a huge slap in the face for me. I was able to get some help from a neurologist to where I started taking cialis. Although it helped me with getting an erection, I couldn’t reach the point of orgasam to where I can ejaculate. My wife and I do have sex, but once in a blue moon. It happens very infrequently. Even though she hasn’t caught me looking at porn or masturbating, she still suspects that something is up because I never take the initiative to have sex with her. It’s also performance anxiety because it goes back to when I couldn’t “get it up” to have sex with her.
I have also noticed fog in my brain and a lack of motivation or drive to get things done. I would always resort back to the porn and masturbation. I know it’s tearing me apart. All I hear or read people talk about is how masturbation is completely harmless and actually a healthy thing to do. That’s not what I want to hear because it’s not making me feel good in the long run.
I know that I need to go “cold turkey” off if all the stimuli that I am using. Whether it be porn or even sexy photos of women on instagram. I need to abstain from the porn and fantasies that give me the urge to masturbate. I need to get my brain cleared up and I want to see my wife as sufficient for me. Of course I want to have sex, but I want to be able to follow through with it and not resort to fantasy and porn to masturbate when I can be enjoying something that is actually real and more fulfilling. Thank you again for posting this video.

My memory has become crap about a lot of stuff, but I’m pretty sure masturbation has played a role in it. I’m really REALLY trying to stop this along with porn. When you’re out of a relationship, you try to make yourself “feel better”. It’s a tough, rough, & vicious cycle.
Last night was night one. Step one. One step at a time. I pray to stay on the path. Wish me luck y’all. That & finding the right woman that’ll be the eventual wife stay in sync with.

I'd like to raise two (2) issues right now:
1.) Regarding masturbation - I've tried abstaining from masturbation and I usually only go about a week, more or less, because it gets harder as I go. What's getting harder isn't resisting the desire to masturbate, but a VERY REAL physical pain that increases over time in the groin area. I think some people call it "blue balls". So what's the solution for this Dr. Trish? (Please don't tell me drugs or medication...so many other issues associated with that which I wont get into here.) The only solution I know for this if you don't have a partner is a quick masturbation session.
2.) Also, I do know that too much masturbation is not good...but are you saying there's no such thing as "healthy" masturbation? If that's the case then 99.9% of the world's population has a problem. Quite frankly, if there is no such thing as "healthy" masturbation, then there's no such thing as healthy sex either. How could there be? If a consenting sexual partner wanted to have sex with me 2 times a day every day I feel that would have all the same trappings of PMO even if there's no PMO involved. Please clarify because your argument, although it has a lot of good information, is choc full of holes too.

    • @DrTrishLeigh
      @DrTrishLeigh  2 года назад +9

      No holes here my friend.
☝️ my mentor likes to say that no one ever died from not masturbating.
Although blue balls might be uncomfortable the pain will decrease if you do not masturbate while your brain is rewiring itself from compulsive masturbation.
      Which leads me to
✌️ what we are talking about here is complsive masturbation… Which you are right is part of compulsive sexual behavior disorder… The need to go back to sex for mood regulation.
The key to resolving this issue is to develop healthy mood regulation, decrease hyperssexuality, and learn, probably for the first time how to create healthy sexuality.

What I especially like about it is that you are genuine about your desire to help people be free and healthy, a very honourable motive that shines through your presentation, which makes it so convincing in contrast to the sales techniques of other presenters. You also summarise the science behind it in a way that everyone can understand, which again supports your approach. In addition, you don't moralise the behaviour so that there is no need to feel bad about it, which makes an enormous difference compared to religious teachers. I want a real woman in my life. I had someone I love very much and I lost her also because of the addiction. Because my brain was so wired on Instagram vacation I didn't know how to interact with a woman intimately and my anxiety provoked intrusive thoughts. This. Able to draw them on right now is give me insomnia four nights in a row now and moments of dread, guilt, sadness, and then silence which feels completely scary. The same woman that I loved is still in my life and she is my rock through all of this. I'm going to beat this addiction. my overuse as of late has been because of stressors in my life, such as loss of my aunt and my grandmother, who were very prominent in my upbringing. I know these are all withdrawal symptoms from my brain trying to heal and when I did not get a fix, now that my libido is flatlined, that optio is unavailable so the self doubt comes roaring in through weird dreams, porn flashbacks, twisted memories, and false reactions. Finally… THE TRUTH! Having stumbled across your podcasts, one might say randomly, and after listening to the first 7 this week then watching a couple of your videos it’s very clear to me, FINALLY yes finally there’s a voice out there that actually knows what they are talking about and is not afraid to speak the truth (this is deep what your telling us) and whatever judgement there might be from some, it’s all worth it because YOU my friend are helping men and I’m sure women too understand what’s really going on and why/how/where this happens and that in turn is life changing… your ‘teaching’ so to speak is changing lives, and helping all that are willing to apply what they hear… suffice as to say this is so needed! On a personal level I’m so done with surface words like ‘oh there’s nothing with it’ or ‘what you doing is normal’ NO… that’s the biggest lie I’ve ever heard, it’s about time someone spoke up so that we can get the help we need and live a life that’s fulfilling and addiction free! So happy you are here and doing what you do, this is life changing and many will be impacted. I firmly believe, if one is to be free of this, by that I mean pornography/masturbation we have to ready to get very honest with ourselves and recognise a) we need help b) acknowledge we have an addiction, and c) do whatever we need to do to get free of this… in a word, it’s time to get serious, it’s decision time! 🙌 thank you for being here! Not sure if pathetic men watch porn or if porn makes men pathetic.

Great information Doc. However , I believe PMO is also linked to the current male loneliness epidemic. Statistically speaking people are lonelier than ever which obviously decreases sexual opportunities. So in a lot of ways pmo may be the only way for a lot of men to release. Modern females aren’t really making a case for attraction either. Most of them are addicted to social media. I feel like it’s all connected. What do you think?

I dont have a problem with quitting porn but definitely with quitting masturbation. The idea that masturbation is raising my dopamine levels, which makes it harder to enjoy the world is not purported by scientists at all, but I believe you. This cognitive dissonance is extremely distressing. I believe what you're saying but it literally seems like society is completely split on the issue all the way down to the experts themselves on this issue.

Compulsive hypersexuality behavior disorder is recognized in the ICD 11. It manifests in different ways for different people but primarily as porn consumption and masturbation.
You are right… This thing is real. The science will catch up and the divide will close. In the meantime, I just want people to heal and be well.

@@DrTrishLeigh Yeah, but somehow, being gay isn't in the ICD... so... it's hard to know what to take seriously, anymore.

Psychologically, those who have a strong intention to quit, will even have a stronger desire to do so. And to quit completely is an impossible thing to fulfill. Maybe it's better to just try to reduce it. In fact many animals male and female masturbate, both when a partner is available or otherwise. This has been observed in cats, dogs, male deer, rhinos, wild boars and male monkeys. So, masturbation is just a normal thing for living beings. I would allow anyone to slap my face if there was a pious Imams, Priests or even Nuns who had never masturbated.
