*"Why is pug?"* is one of life's great unanswered questions
Who was phone?
@@Kuriboh1008 why was scotsman
More importantly:
*Why is Terrier?*
@@jamesgroccia644 when is terrier?
@@Kuriboh1008 where was royal scot?
The pug, for it's size, is the smallest locomotive on the rails. This is Pugs.
*DOOOOO*
*DO DO DO DO DO DU DO!*
*DUH! DUN! DAH DUN DAH DAH*
(Instrumental lyrics of TUGS INTRO)

If you imagine the whistle as the "barks" of the engine, it makes the idea of calling these engines pugs so much more adorable
Now whenever I see a "Pug" locomotive, I'm just gonna say,
"What the Pug doin'?"
1:47 *Awdry’s real prototype model of PERCY has been found!* and it looks to be in excellent condition for being 50+ years old! His model was first built in 1949, and amazing it looks this good all these years later!
This history is better than what I am learning in school 😂
makes sense train histroy should exist
Quite right
2:05 it's the Unicycle Lion! *Darkness is triggered*
2:27 Tbh, I didn't know this LNER Y9 Pug loco exist. I thought that Hornby made this a freelance design.
Because it’s friend-shaped
Nice, I saw 2 NB pugs in Bo'ness museum on Monday
In essence, pugs are more or less small, 0-4-0 saddle tank engines, usually with outside cylinders.
Pugs are some of my favourite trains, so this was very interyto finally find out how they got the name.
Don't forget one famous pug......"Smokey Joe"
Smokey Joe, at least above the footplate, is actually a very good model of a Caledonian 'Pug'
@@johndavies1090 yep. Hornby first brought the model out in the early 80's and still used today. They did do a centenary edition of smokey joe back in 2020.
*ZOOOOOOOOOOM*
3:25 What is that funnel! 🤣I do like Pugs, admittingly, the engines more than the dogs.
And now for why Jintys are called Jintys
Awesome video trainboy
I never thought I would want to know this
So pug is monkey in Scottish so does that mean the monkey meme are technically can be apply to these trains?
I think so 😳
Monktren
Reject train-manity, return to pug

1:24 “the BIG PUGS”
Ah yes, so our larger tank engines are ADULT PUGS, and our smaller tank engines are PUPPY PUGS.
A couple of these scotch “pugs” are on display at the Bo’ness and Kinniel Railway in…you guessed it…. Scotland. As a Scot myself I visit them and even sometimes see them running, the last time I did was fairly long ago though…
'Pug' is a very long establish northern term for small shunting engines. The idea that its contracted from 'pugilist' is a good one - short wheelbased, outside cylinder tank engines have a propensity to waddle when running, similar to a boxer limbering up. One of the east coast Scottish docks years ago displayed a lineside warning notice, which read 'Beware of the pug engine', giving it some official credence. So far as I'm aware, the term wasn't used sought of (roughly speaking) the River Mersey. Probably, as regards its origins, its best to say 'you pays your money, you takes your choice.'
Now we only have to know why a Jinty is called, well, a Jinty. Anyways great vid! I never wondered why the Pug locomotives we're known as that, but it's still cool to know, thank you for this little educational vid regarding the small and cute Pugs (well maybe aside from the GWR one), and i don't just mean the actual dog Pugs
I have had the chance to drive the blaenavon 0-4-0 pug shown, it snow got a much nicer livery
i feel like whenever some people think of a pug they sometimes think of percy
Next you should do the reason behind the name given to 4-6-2s "Pacific's"
Same with 4-4-2s "atlantics"
As I understand it, the name 'Pacific' came from an early batch of that arrangement being built for New Zealand.
@@FunAngelo2005 The first Atlantics, I believe were built for either the Atlantic Coast Line or the Atlantic City branch of the Philladelphia & Reading. Either way, the originating road's title became the type name for the wheel arrangement.
Hmm, this is actually a question I've never heard answered before
This just reminds me of the busted buffers video “Pug the movie”
pugs are pugs.
dog pugs are dog pugs.
I LOVE THEM BOTH!
(also this video is good! keeps my day happy!)
I thought they were called "Pugs" because of both the shape, and guessed that it's the puffing noises that sounded like pug dog that gave them the name, like the terriers.
Pug a.k.a. the more common form of Percy a.k.a. easier way to make a model Percy
The Scottish pug is basically the hornby generic 0-4-0
In the Netherlands. There is an engine (an 0-6-0 to be exact) with a very funny name. The engine's name is Bello, because of the bell that the engine class had to warn people along the line.
I hope you can make a video about it
I actually never thought about that- I mean terriers make dog sounds but what about pugs?
i also think the name of pugs are fitting
I’ve never seen anything talk about a N.B.R. F class also known as a LNER J88
This just feeds into my head canon that Percy is a modified Caledonian Pug.
Can you do a video on why are jinties called jinties
Amazing video as always, love the thumbnail btw.
GUYS WAKE UP TRAINBOI UPLOADED
I know it’s a little early for April Fool’s Day, but I came up with an incredible idea.
Bachmann Tom Moss.
I know literally know one cares, but I've got an engine in my series that's nicknamed pug (his real name is Union of Rikabod), and the nickname came from the Turnfinch police term Person Under Guard, or P.U.G. because Union of Rikabod was in a scrapyard for a while, and his friend kept him safe there, or guarded him. So the engine protecting him nicknamed him Pug, because he was a Person Under Guard.
2:45 my local railway museum has that exact same engine, she’s called “Allison” on her side tanks.
As a person who had a Pug and know how they act a cheeky four wheel tank engine is a real mechanical version of the pups. Just as the A1s are Terriers.
I love them enough I stopped working and watched the video. Worth getting yelled at by my manager
To pug or not to pug
I saw LNWR and thought London and North Western Railway (like if sodor had a line a London)
Me: hears the word PUG
Also me: *THINKING OF MY HORNBY NCB B2 PECKETT*
Wait I thought the engine named Pug was only called that with his class.
New insult from Thomas to Percy
Most people when pugs: dogs
T&F or train fan: RWS
Dog on wheels? Totally understand it
The fact that term expands towards a broad variety of locomotives it kind of makes me have want to give the one that we see in The Railway Series books a proper name.
OMG my brother 2:47
a kid in my school reminds me of the pug
What is a jinty locomotive? Can you make a video on that after I’m done watching this video can you please make a video on?the jinty locomotive, please and how they became friends with percy in the Railway series
Not what I was expecting
I have been on a "pug" however the engine was called pug beacause it was a Pretty Useful Gift due to it being donated to them by the RSSA (Railway Society of South Africa). So yeah thought it would be an interesting story.
Percy in the corner: 🥺
6 hours till this is 24 hours or 1 day old
first engine i ever did anything to was a pug bothj in genral and work on, funnly i am in the video somewhere
It has also been suggested that its short for Pugilist as their small size belied their impressive strength though I can't find my sources for at the moment
@1:27 that’s not a pug that’s a husky he’s huge 💀
I think I remember a line from the model seasons of the original series where the narrator said "Percy barked back"
Pugs are the little engines so ugly they're cute. they're mostly shunters and industrial engines, not glamorous, not meant to be beautiful, just a bunch of little troopers, and as such, they are nice, relatable little engines.
Why are Jinty's called... Jinty's?
I don’t know why they named it Pug I was built as a pug and I never question that
i always figured tha pugs were named pugs because they're small and kinda squashed like the faces of pugs
Pug+monkey =small bean
When is pug?
That’s the real question we need to answer
becose the pugs are small and dog pugs thats why and now instead of Percy being a caterpillar he is now a pug
B&O Docksider is a pug?
Thanks I guess
I am convinced that reality is just a series of in-jokes between whatever deity there is,
Cause I just got an old Dapol Pug,
Like, I unboxed and run tested it yesterday levels of just gotten,
Yet another example of how great Scottish engineering was and is
Why insult the smöl when friend shaped?
i’m curious about the music choice, I like it don’t get me wrong, but won’t it get a strike? 😅
This is my favorite train boy video and my pug approves
They’re short and stumpy just like a pug
bc the dog pug likes them ofc
Cause they're cute like the dog. Duh
Smokey joe 😂
Nice video
Guys I think pug likes pugs
😡😡😡😡 I am highly offended 1:40
Bark bark
If there is pugs that are dogs and 0-4-0s what about terriers
Stroudley's famous 'Terrier's got their nickname from the sharp bark of their exhaust on the London suburban trains for which they were designed. Similarly, in parts of Kent and Sussex terrier dogs were known as 'rooters', which term was also applied to the engines.
@@johndavies1090 I said that because 0-4-0s are called pugs and 0-6-0 are called terriers funny they are named after dogs
If your reading this, your a pug
You know, I asked this question myself. I'm genuinely surprised a video for it was made. Thanks man!
I never really asked this question.. just sorta went with it. maybe, you could do a video on " Big Bertha " the lickey incline banker
🤔I never knew
Also 😱big pug
comment answer below
Two iconic pugs (if you are a fan of TS series's) are twins, small, do mad experiments and are green, carried a small railgun and have traveled through time, dimensions and even turned sir Oliver Cromwell into a 0-4-0
So "pug" is a slur in the Thomas universe?????
Dam shiz really is dark....
I would love to see a pug being named "Pluto"
I’m just making me feel more bad about my self all of the big engines are making fun of me because I AM A PUG D:
Pugs not drugs kids, or pugs and drugs, do what you want I’m not your dad sonny jim
Wouldn't the GWR trojan count as a pug?
No, it’s has a GWR style that cannot count as a pug
@@Steamteamrailworks88 okay... What about the C&O C16 class 0-4-0ST?
@@the_autism_express it’s never referred as a pug
@@Steamteamrailworks88 but would it count?
@@the_autism_express Hardly
my favorite kind of pug is fat
Pug rws
You forgot that
So they are called pugs huh I was calling them the midget engines XD
if someone made a poor comedy pug is a slur for engines if one racist engine would say that
