  • Soap making video for the Soap Challenge Club October 2020 - Ghost Swirls: Beginner Category making soap swirls by adjusting the lye solution concentration.
Please always follow safety requirements while making soap! Sodium/Potassium hydroxide is caustic and can cause burns on skin or on mucous membranes!
Ghost swirls were created by Auntie Clara from her soaping experiments and you can read more about her soaps here at: auntieclaras.c...
It is fascinating how contrasting design can be achieved without the addition of colours and the way soap makers play with their soaps! I have still got so much to learn from.
The colourants I used in this video were:
30% lye concentration - middle portion
45% lye concentration - outer portion
Essential oil blend: Peppermint and Patchouli
    Time links to the video:
    0:25 Mixing of lye solution
    0:58 Adding essential oils
    1:05 Splitting the masterbatch
1:13 Adding lye solution to the oils
    1:48 Pouring of the soap
    2:32 Removing of the dividers
    2:50 Swirling of the soap
3:18 Covering and insulating of the soap
    3:31 Finished photos
It is really weird how I was expecting the opposite results were the middle portion will be more translucent while the outer portion would be more opaque. It turned out the other way around probably because I have only used a half batch and the outer portion was insulated with the wooden mould OR both portion actually went through gel phase? If you have any idea, please let me know in the comments below! I am still so new with soap making and this is a great learning opportunity.

I also tired the ghost swirl in the water ratios and found I had to go to 1:1 and 3:1 to get that contrast. It so interesting to see the change in the soap! Nice job! Blessings 💕

It's so interesting how the different batters behave from batch to batch. I do wonder if the soap went through gel phase - the center should have been darker! You have a very nice contrast though, so it's definitely a beautiful ghost swirl!

Yes I am so confused with the results! But I’m glad the contrast showed up! I must try with a bigger batch next time 😂
