The eternal beauty that these two capture in this performance, is just astounding. Watching them and the chemistry and sense of connectedness that their performance shares with the audience gives me no choice but to just sit still and feel the pure bliss. The whole Down From The Mountain concert was brilliant, but this is a special one, for sure. Both amazing artists, just beautiful.
@@YourLoyalDeserter Sounds wrong because they miss it badly! That smile means "never mind, keep going". Next time round (2:39) Gillian goes high to make sure it can't happen again.
...the most perfect love story put to music...the way Gillian looks at David...the inflections of their voices...in my mind I'm waltzing with the love of my life, who I never met, to a song I thought I would never hear...oh, god - what a song...
When I saw them sing this on the PBS special "Down From the Mountain" tears started rolling down my face. I have the video of that concert which is fabulous but that song I can never get out of my mind.
That's John Hartford on fiddle, one year and one month before he passed. It's poignant how at the end of this amazing performance, John simply turns and walks back into the shadows.
Love that fiddle stepping up while Dave's guitar steps down (1:33-1:35)! John had quite a lot to do with the show. He left the stage after this song while Gillian and Dave went on to play "I Want to Sing That Rock 'n' Roll" which is also brilliant. The mandolin embellishments are the cherry on top.
The connection between Gillian and Dave is palpable in this video, I love the close ups and the eye contact and the pure and sweet love for what they do. They never cease to move my heart. Thank you for posting!! I've never heard this song! It is a beauty!!
Went to one of their gigs in Oslo, Norway last year and was amazed at the easy musicianship and flawless understanding of this duo. This song, of course, is a great favourite of mine. Timeless and effortlessly beautiful.
Yes! What a beautiful piece of chamber music no matter how big the room. How wonderful that the videographer can capture the moments of change and expressions as they happen. Kudos
Anyone notice that everyone's about a half step, sharp? I think this video is from an analog source with a playback speed issue. There would have been no reason for Compton and Hartford to tune sharp...
Yes, it's clear from Gillian's fretboard that that she's playing in Eb (C-shape tonic at the 3rd fret) like on the album, but the audio sounds in E major.
This is so lovely!!......I must have listened to it 50 times already!! Anyone know where I might find some piano music for it, or has anyone figured it out??
She has her capo on 3 and she is playing C G and an occasional F in there but she hangs on C and G mostly. She is playing it in the key of D with chords shapes of C. I don't know how that works for piano but if you know those chords on piano I bet you could figure it out! Just 1 4 5 in the key of D. (D G A )Good luck and have fun!

Good grief, when she smiles at Dave at 2:23 when they hit the difficult harmony spot on, it just makes the world a better place.
Thanks Milt and I can't agree with you more.
+Milt Rudy That note blows my mind .
Milt Rudy I agree. :)
It kinda sounds wrong, but also amazing.

Just a flat out drop-dead gorgeous song that I couldn't get out of my head even if I wanted to.
Let's treasure this bright light, this special distillation of frequencies from humanity's collective consciousness that we know as Gillian Welch!
That one note just blows my mind.Such a beautiful song and love his expressions.
Right? Whew!
Wish I'd known this song 25 years ago when my children were babies. It would have been their lullabye.

I have listened to that beautiful song repeatedly for years- what a terrific melody and words that seep into my being.

It really is absolutely perfect.
Cool!
It is simply one of he most beautiful, harmonic songs that reaches down into my very being.

And equally telling how Gillian motions him to come back. Good people and great musicians.
And Mike Compton also glides away - they seem to be leaving the glow to Gillian and David - that was really sweet!

Gillian is an angel. This concert is beautiful. Wish I would have been there

Great!
John Hartford ! woah! my man
❤❤❤
is there a video of Gillian Welch singing Indian War Whoop with John Hartford?
It's fitting that John Hartford is looking over their shoulders there.
You're welcome!

Is the gentleman with the suspenders playing an oud or a mandolin?
tried to see the concert at the link, but it is "Private Only". Too bad
Is this song on any of her albums?
Just wondering: are you the real Jan Hammer, Czech-American born musician, composer and record-producer?
Ended up here because of Lila Downs and Norah Jones.
isn't it supposed to be that way?
That poor guy!!! He doesn't have to suffer like that. Hemorrhoid operations have been successful for years now.
Hank William could have written this.
Thanks Gary for tuning in.
