I agree but 4 appearances in 4 of the first (if not the first 4) projects from the DCU is A LOT for Rick Flag Sr. I guess he could survive Peacemaker, and his story could still set up the Waller show, but I just got a feeling watching the premiere that this is where it’s headed.

Not quite. Gunn said that only events that are directly referenced and/or shown are cannon to the DCU. But we could definitely get that scene to bring it into cannon, I’m not saying no to more Idris Elba!
Honestly I don't think Peacemaker will be the end of Flag. The way Grillo speaks in interviews makes it sound like he has a future beyond that.
