The monthly fee is a huge draw back. They should of done it by pre-loading a library of workouts and then giving you options to pay for new workouts, enroll with trainers for a customized plan, live group classes etc.. There are so many options available for them to generate recurring revenue without making people feel like they are forced to pay $50 a month just to use the thing they already paid thousands for.
agreed, Yevgeniy. hopefully we'll see a competitor come into the market and severely undercut them. Right now they can get away with it being the only one in town. I would love to see some open-source DIYer create this thing. I am most intrigued by the application of AI/ML to adjust resistance in real time and using this with eccentrics/negatives.
Something to note - I believe that you actually are only required to pay the subscription for the first year. You don't need it after that, and you can create your own workout plans to follow on the device. It's actually really easy to create them too, you can program in supersets, rest periods, etc.
This actually looks AMAZING and I went to go buy one right now even though the price tag was $3,000 but then I saw it requires a $50/month membership and I immediately stopped. No thanks. That was a deal breaker for me. Sure, if you don't get the membership you're able to still use the machine to do exercises but it doesn't allow you to do any of the smart features like logging your workouts or viewing the video exercise demos. This machine is a self contained computer that's isolated from the rest of the world and it doesn't even require internet access, so why would anyone pay a monthly fee for it? If it were a live webcam workout like Pelaton then ok sure a membership fee makes sense. But this is like buying a Dell PC without internet access and paying Dell each month to use the computer that you already paid full price for. I feel like we as consumers should NOT support corporate greedy tactics like these. If we do, we won't actually "own" anything in the future. Need to wash your clothes? Gotta pay $25/mo for your washer and dryer. Want to do dishes? Gotta pay $35/mo for your dish washer. You get the idea...
It won't fail YOU KNOW WHY BECAUSE THEY FOUND A PROBLEM AND A SOLUTION BUT YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. IT SUCKS THERE's GREED IN THE WORLD BUT THIS MACHINE IS ITS ON NICHE YOU HAVE TO ADMIT. I mean even with the 50 A month membership, THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT FROM THE REST. IT'S ACTUALLY CHEAPER THAN A REAL TRAINER. ITS ALL BUSINESS. FIND A PROBLEM AND SOLVE IT. THEY DID IT, A HOME GYM WITH A MEMBERSHIP COST SMH FUCKING BRILLIANT LOL
Hi Coop. Just want to thank you for this review. You heavily influenced our decision to purchase a Tonal, which we received in mid-April (2022). We converted our den/library into a home office/gym and added the Tonal, a Sole F85 treadmill, and a set of 5-25 lb. dumbbells (for my wife only). So far, I could not be happier with our Tonal. I had done zero resistance training since we stopped going to our local gym at the outset of the pandemic in March 2020 (i.e., over two years). However, as of this posting (early Aug. 2022) I've completed 98 Tonal workouts over 17 consecutive weeks (including 22 of the last 30 days) for a total of just under 300,000 lbs., comprised of 165 (of 245 possible) different movements/exercises. In addition, I've increased my strength score by 43.4%, which is well ahead of my initial goal of achieving a 50% improvement by mid-October (i.e., 6 months). I haven't felt (or looked) like this since the summer of '94 when I was 33yo. Lastly (and, again, mostly for my wife), we also took your advice and ordered a white Rep AB-4100 bench to replace the Tonal bench (should be arriving soon). I genuinely respect and appreciate that you were able to be open-minded and honest about the value of Tonal given that it is so different from nearly all of the other equipment you've reviewed.
I’ve had my Tonal for about a year and love it. The subscription cost is a negative, especially since I don’t use any of the trainers (I suffered a severe ankle injury so I had to design my own workouts to accommodate that). But it’s solidly built, takes up very little space, and looks good in my home gym. The white glove installation is great if you live in the US, but I recently moved to Mexico and they obviously don’t offer it down here. No worries, I thought, I’d just call Tonal, explain my situation and ask them to send me the instructions. No dice. They absolutely refused to do it. So their customer service is definitely crap. Fortunately, after a deep dive on the InterWebs, I managed to find a copy of the installation manual posted by a former Tonal installer. It took two guys to install it, but anyone who can operate a tape measure, drill and screwdriver can do it.
you just know there are going to be morons out there who think they know what they‘re doing and end up seriously injuring themselves when the thing suddenly rips off the wall… So it‘s probably a liability thing
Its $49 a month after the $3K hardware is paid off. That is just as affordable as gym membership if you include driving there and back (petrol), plus you save time not having to travel. But yes the initial hardware fee is pricey.
I think this thing would be awesome in place of a traditional cable machine. The biggest turnoff I see is the subscription. This was a factor when I was looking at treadmills. Really liked the Norditrac but ended up buying a Sole because I didn't want something that had features tied to a subscription. That is the whole point of a home gym, convenience and only having to pay once.
I sort of agree HOWEVER if they can use the subscription cost to subsidize the cost of the equipment then that's very much worth it and it will truly be the "netflix for training". Imagine it costs $150 to install then only $20 a month. I don't know a single gym in a big city with that low of a price-point especially if you're looking for personalized training or virtual glasses also offering gamification.
Throwing this out there, I never received my tonal. The entire process was a nightmare. Delivery was scheduled several times, I'd wait around all day and they wouldn't show. The support team at Tonal has little to no idea what's going on. My tonal ended up getting shipped to Boston, I live in Colorado. They then rescheduled it, after waiting for months, for it to arrive on Christmas eve. I let tonal know that after waiting around all day, no one showed AGAIN. On Christmas Eve! They had no idea until I made them aware. Seems like a nice piece of equipment but not worth the headache.
Wow apart from having to pay the monthly fee, that in itself tells me it's definitely not worth it. I hope you asked for a refund and told them to stick it..
I'm surprised with some of the negative reviews. I was so impressed with the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMwYg0MOXR4M-oGeyBsNSYe1aPOUoRH6D cage that I got the lat pulldown attachment that goes with it. It is equally outstanding. I don't have one complaint other than putting it together is a job. The instructions and packaging of the parts are very well designed and organized. Also, I stripped and damaged the pull down cable the first day, admitting it was my stupid fault, and they quickly replaced it at no charge. I'm 6'5, 280lbs and fit in the cage just fine. Glenn B
Well, it looks like it's not out of 1000: ruclips.net/video/WRfpazPofd8/видео.html 🤯. Looks like that dude's at 1074 overall - with 1173 for lower body. He did not skip leg day.
I would buy this right now IF a membership was INCLUDED for the first 12 months. The fact that this thing is expensive already, and then they’re requiring an additional 12-24 months of the monthly membership paid up front nearly doubles the price. That’s INSANE to me.
@KelliAnn Winkler what a bargain. I think you're missing the technological differences. The mirror is literally a $1500 tv. It's not interacting with your workout like tonal, adaptive resistance, the sensor interpretations on movement and strain of each rep.... it's comparing apple to oranges. The mirror is great for yoga.
It's funny how paranoid ppl are about cameras when guess what!! Your phones camera captures you just fine everyday and the phones microphone listens to everything you say too. So why worry about another camera in your home lol
Coop forgot to mention that the accessories (that you need to use the damn thing) are not included. All of the attachments and the bench cost $500. And if you want to just use cable attachments you already have, you still have to buy their proprietary adapters to make them attach. So base cost for the Tonal, attachments, and the REQUIRED 12 month subscription, is $4100, not including shipping and tax.
This is a product that I could see being huge, but oddly enough, you’d need to take away a few of the “features”. A wall mounted cable cross over. That sounds like an amazing idea! Take away the unnecessary proprietary handles/attachments, videos, camera, and subscription. Hell even the screen, make it half the size. Even at $2000 that would be a good price.
@@Thnickaman1 yes exactly the community itself will make workouts and programs we don't need a subscription service for that but well they want to make as much money as possible
@@Thnickaman1 Yes the biggest appeal for me is how clean it looks on the wall vs. a full cable setup. I've almost bought one a few times now. Since we are moving in about 6 months Im waiting. Hoping by then there are more improvements, but getting one for sure.
Hotels seems like a good target market for something like this. Small footprint and serves multiple workouts for people trying to break a sweat while traveling. I'm not sold on it being a good option for a home gym. I think cardio based equipment like treadmills and bikes are far more prolific in homes than strength training equipment which is why Peloton is such a success; although, if you rent and are moving every year or two it could be good supplement to a gym membership.
Saw a lady walking on her treadmill in her garage while I was literally out on a walk on an uphill portion, walking past her and thinking why walk on a treadmill cooped up in the garage when you can walk outside for free and feel the wind and sun on your skin like humans were meant to
Cross Kun There could be a few reasons. Maybe she or someone in her family normally does their walking or jogging at a time when going out on the roads is not as convenient or safe, so her workout regimen is based on using the treadmill. Or maybe they have a medical condition that, when it acts up, it’s better to be in the garage instead of being blocks or miles away. It can be hard to tell what’s going on in the background of a stranger’s life.
@@zerstorer335 to add to that, some people want to keep a pace and a constant incline so a treadmill is better for that. I think no matter how someone decided to go on walks, as long as you do them, youre golden!
Not really. People spend 3k on an eliptical that sits in a corner as a coat rack, and spend 50$ a month on Gym memberships that they use like 3 times a year.
Not bad if you have a household of people willing to use it and divide cost. Myself and my siblings each pay 35 a month for a 24 hr gym. For the 4 of us thats 140 a month on top of that the gym is 20 minutes away and driving back home after a rep intensive workout drains you.
Im still waiting for a compact device that will let me do 800lb squats in my living room and become an olympic athlete while watching romcoms on Netflix.
Once the camera Zoom type feature is enabled, this would be great for physical therapy post injury with a 1 on 1 trainer appointment. Revolutionary for medical and insurance fields. Could even be covered partially $ in a policy.
I just got mine. I will say. The magnetic weights are completely different than anything free weight. The eccentric mode on Tonal hands down kicks ass. Not only that, it makes you really do each rep the right way without cheating or being able to use momentum to get that peak squeeze in. I also realize why it would be difficult to do live classes. It’s because having to adjust the handles and various straps can be time consuming which then can throw you off from what the instructor might be asking you to do next. That’s one of the biggest learning curves. Making the proper adjustments on the pullys to go from one movement to another. Overall however, my impressions are this is a badass system. You can’t help but follow the instructions and the weights, range of motion, ability to do the movements with proper form are great.
Thank you as well for your opinions on this. My husband and I are looking to buy this. The family membership at a good gym near us is over $120 a month and takes at least 20 min to get to. We also hate going out in winter months.
I made my own. I mounted the largest iPad on the wall, two broom sticks I cut in half attached to two landmine attachments. I used resistance bands attached to each end of the broom sticks along with carabiners for extra attachments. I call my invention "Toe Nail". Patent is currently pending.
Interesting design and concept. The problem I have with these types of machines are the subscriptions. This and some combination of a Peloton or a hydrow and your approaching luxury gym territory.
Yeah, and I get peloton having a subscription due to the amount of content they put out (both live and prerecorded). But this doesn't offer even half of that, yet their subscription costs more...
Love the idea. The price is just too high. We sourced our almost our entire gym second hand (squat rack, weights, functional trainer, etc). Our gym is packed with more than what we need. I just couldn’t stomach paying that much for this equipment AND paying a subscription fee.
After watching countless videos on Tonal, I think I'm going to buy it. The $50 membership made me hesitant, but it sounds like a great investment overall. It's convienant, comes with in-home personal training, keeps track of your progress, and can be used by the whole family. Also, each video I've watched, everyone recommended it. I'm sold.
We just bought it yesterday, they install 1-3 weeks, can't wait...just letting u know they must install, $250, u have to send pics of 2 places you would want it mounted, u need 7 foot 10" clearance at least I think, u must have a grounded plug within 6 foot of the unit,, ready when they show up, can't say you'll put it in after. Just letting u know, we did all of it wasn't hard got lucky with plug placement, but we bought it and didn't even think about that, so we got lucky, just trying to help
Because of the $50 membership required....forever, I choose not to buy it. If they did not gimp the unit when you cancel your membership I would have still considered it.
They should have a free membership with regular on demand videos and practices and one gold membership for those who wants live and personal experience
I can see this for someone that prefers working out at home and simply doesn't have the space for a traditional home gym. The upfront cost plus fees are killing these as a replacement for traditional home gyms. With my home gym, I buy more equipment as needed. For about a year, my home gym consisted of a barbell and some plates. As I could afford more and got stronger, I added to my gym.
Dude. I love this video. Simple and straight to the point. You have answered all my Qs. I’ve been debating to get an exercise device for our home. Thanks
He doesn't really think that thing is worth the cost. He's being sponsored and he gets kick backs on anyone that buys it through his link. It's literally a commercial and he's selling it to everyone. It's overpriced and the subscription fee is a huge rip off.
Thanks for this detailed review. Having had both Precor and Bowflex systems in my house before, this interests me because I no longer have the available space for a large resistance system. My biggest concern is the durability. Glad that you used it for 6 months as that gives me a bit more confidence it won't just snap after heavy use.
Appreciate the honest review. I have a home gym but would like to add cable functionality. I don’t have space for a full cable machine but this would fit. Just need to decide how to prioritize it based on its price. I think I’ll keep an eye on its features for a while and see how it improves. And start saving! 😉
That monthly fee is pretty steep. Saving money was a good portion of my home gym motivation. iFit and Peloton make sense to me at 12-15/month, but if I add $49/month to that I’ve pretty much completely offset a membership somewhere. Either reducing price or figuring out some sort of bundling arrangement would be great as these home based streaming technologies roll out.
Steep is not even the word to start describing that fee, lmao. The whole point of getting a home gym is to in the long run save money. Theyre charging you more than a gym subscription for that monthly fee. I'm sure the sales reps get big commissions for convincing people to go with the sub.
coming back to this to mention that coop keeps talking about it being worth it when the price drops. well, as of january 10 2024, the price has gone UP a thousand dollars, and still requires a mandatory membership.
did all this research because I was seriously considering it, I went and measured my wall, looked into my rental contract, read reviews, then went to the purchase screen and noticed the $50 a month "mandatory" subscription fee. they should have led with that because that's a hard pass. it's a gym membership but they save money on overhead by storing the equipment in your house. my local gym is $40 a month and its always empty because most people go to planet fitness for $12 a month. plus I dont have to make a HUGE down payment.
Very interesting how the market is changing. I love this concept. This is great for the new tiny house movement or small places. I will give it time and wait to see more competition and get the price down.
I'm thrilled with my Tonal. It arrived end of June this year. So about 4 months. One of my best purchases. I workout on my treadmill every morning and Tonal about 4 times per week- which I would not do if I had to go to the gym. The $50 is well worth it; tons of options for workouts. For me, I got rid of another service I didn't really use and updated my cable to save the $50. So my monthly spend hasn't changed.
i thought it only pays 1 time for this device to use it and subscribed to Tonal's channel. And after watching this video, I gave up on buying it and unsubscribed from the channel because I don't want to spend money to buy a device and have to pay an extra monthly fee to operate it 😅
I mean, its like buying equipment and then paying a monthly fee for a trainer. I agree it's pretty expensive. I'll probably wait a few years to buy. But the idea of an initial purchase plus a subscription sounds pretty fair to me.
Totally agree, monthly fee just feels greedy as hell. No way am I paying 3k and then a monthly fee. Eliminate the monthly fee, and lower the overall price, and then I think they are on to something. People don't like to be nickel and dimed. That is exactly what Tonal is trying to do here, and what other home gyms are trying to do.
I really want to save by not going to the gym, but if I’m paying Tonal a subscription, then I’m not saving anting. That would have been the only reason I would have purchased this. So Nope! Not gonna do it. In fact if I wanted to pay for a trainer I’d be paying Apple for their program!
@@alexsupreme3748 the whole point of 3k is it being a one time payment. With the subscription added there’s no point in choosing this over a gym subscription unless you’re loaded and don’t know what to spend money on
@@Kyle-fq4kq it’s useful if you’re loaded and also absolutely hate going to a gym but don’t want a bunch of equipment in your house. I think it’s better suited to corporate suites at hotels though. I hate using the hotel gyms for some reason and I’d always just go to an outside gym.
My friend just got one and i have been doing the summer body fitness program. I really like it. I have a full garage full of weights ,cables and such. Its pretty mindless the way it guides you. Plus it will have you stretch the muscles you used after every workout.
People who buy this are just ignorant. If you look at 95% of the people who use this they're scrawny, overweight,, Housewives, etc. They're noobs. They'd be better off spending $100 getting a couple pairs of dumbbells and doing squats and presses with them than wasting time and money on this lame thing.
@K lake no it's not.. not even close.. LA Fitness is $25 a month and they actually have equipment in there do you get results unlike this piece of garbage. You'd be better off buying $150 weight set from Walmart than this contraption
Thanks for the honest review. I am wanting to step up my strength training with a home gym rather than join a gym. I do workout 4 days a week already with the Peleton app so I feel that I would actually use it. My husband needs to start working out and loves technology so Tonal is right up his alley. I hope I'm right. 🤞🤞
If you want to step up your strength training program you don't go from doing something else to getting a tonal You go from using a tonal to using freeweights Lol
They have payment plans and I’m paying 140 a month and that includes the membership, and honestly with what I was paying at vasa plus a personal trainer just twice a week REALLY makes it worth it
I am 💯 buying this and peloton when the time is right. As your kids get older and schedules get more chaotic, you need to eliminate all excuses from the table. Having equipment at home that allows you to get a full body workout is where it is at.
This is the first video of yours I’ve watched. I thought it was a well executed review. No bias. Just here are the pros and cons. You decide if it’s for you or not. Well done.
If I had to guess, the resistance is being provided with some form of electric motor. Current is being applied to the motor to generate some level of holding torque, and the user is overcoming that torque and essentially back driving the motor. So yeah, Coop was right in assuming “magnets”, since a major component of electric motors is a rotor constructed of magnets.
We've had a Tonal since December of 2018 and we love it. It was especially great when the pandemic hit, but we work from home and I love the programs. As a retired Marine and disabled veteran, I found that a lot of the workouts included exercises that were recommended by my PT, so that was a bonus for me. Not for everybody and yeah a little pricey, but IMO it is cheaper than a 3 year membership at a gym and you can do it right at home (what she said). Just my 2 cents on that.
For people who say 'yeah but you can go to Planet for 789 years for the same price', this machine wasn't made for you lol. It's not advertised as a 'budget gym,' if you want to workout at home on a budget then buy bands and free weights and mind your business. Do you also get mad that luxury vehicles exist and constantly comment on Ferrari and Lambo videos saying 'yeah but you can buy 90 Camrys for this price.'
Have had the machine for two years and still love it, cancelled the membership after the 1 year requirement is fullfilled. Hardware is a piece of art but hate how the company is running it.
I would love to see a one year update and then 3 year review etc to see what type of wear and tear this equipment has. At what point do you see maintenance upkeep being an issue. Thanks for the review coop!
and you lost me at subscription service, I am killing all my subscriptions at the end of the year, that stuff adds up, and is never worth what you get out of it.
The only subscription I keep is Sirius in my truck. OTA radio is near impossible to listen to it's so bad. And I kept the Juggernaut AI for programming. It is the best $27/month I spend.
@@bmstylee It's 20 month to month IIRC, but if you buy it a year at a time, it's 10/month. And there's an option to just buy it forever if you really like it. I haven't ran Jugg AI, but from reading reviews, the Sheiko one works better at making adjustments on the fly and managing day to day fatigue as far as I can tell. There's a facebook group called Sheiko Gold you can join to see what people are saying and get a feel for it.
@@bmstylee Forgot to post, but you probably are interested in results, I just ran a 3 month cycle and added 50-60 lbs on my total, which for me is good. I work like 70 hours a week so I have a hard time progressing consistently.
I’m 56 year old man,I’ve been working out a month on this machine I set up a 5 x 5 custom workout takes me a half an hour three times a week I’ve put on 3 1/2 pounds of muscle the best home gym I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot of them. The $50 a month isn’t much considering most people spend that in a day at getting coffee and fast food
Great review. As a user, one thought on the bench is that they probably want a lightweight bench so that it can be moved around during the workout. An overly complicated heavy-weight bench might be a con for use with this device. That being said, I do not know much about what is available, so expensive, fancier but light weight benches might exist. Cheers!
Also, they probably want a bench with a small footprint so it can be stowed away when not in use. The whole idea is a minimal footprint. The bench is the long pole in the tent.
Great video man! I'm mostly a runner and a cyclist (both road and trails) but I'm looking to round out my fitness a bit so I'm gonna either buy Tonal or Tempo. Trying to figure out which one works best for me and this video was very helpful in my research!
Wow! Thank you so much for the great review!!! You gave all the important details about the purchase, installation, and function. Love the terminology "Smart Gym/Netflix for training" I think your analysis is intelligent, thoughtful and opened to the future of technology.
I'm really considering buying this because I need an effective home gym that I can put in an upstairs spare bedroom that I'm turning into a home gym. I need something that's not super heavy seeing as though it's going upstairs in my house. I think a Tonal, a rower and some dumbbells would be effective for me.
I want to hate it, but it seems like a good product. I'm an old school, clangin and bangin kind of guy, but my girlfriend would love this. Peloton has proven the model. Throw a big screen on it...check. Have a trainer that guides your workout...check. Have a monthly based continuity model to sustain growth...check. Make it at a price point where it becomes a status symbol to own one....check.
@@incogcheeto9322 It's about $3,500 out the door. Yes, there's also the subscription, but I paid more at my gym, which didn't offer any variation of routine unless I paid another fee to a trainer.
Been in a hotel for over two months and all they have are dumbbells up to 55 and functional trainer pulley machine. If you are more into bodybuilding (me) as opposed to strength training this is a great option. I sold my rack prior to moving into hotel and I’m still seeing growth in hypertrophy. Probably going to buy Tonal when I move into my new home
Im confused. Are your saying the hotel gym has still helped making hypertrophy gains with little equipment therefore tonal would work for your goals being minimalistic in bodybuilding training (hypertrophy)?
Your review clinched it for me… I decided to buy one. I want to lift but hate gyms. Too many people with germs (so many don’t wipe down their equipment) and I know everyone has seen tons of creeper videos, ugh. Plus I hate when it’s so crowded, my 1 hour workout turns into three or just 30 minutes because of the frustration of waiting. Thanks for the review, it’s exactly what I needed to decide.
Literally noone....noone who watch this channel will buy this equipment. We all know why. But it is a great review for someone who doesn't have a home gym, looking for options.
Love my Tonal! Started in March 2019 (it's now May 2022) and it's made a significant difference in the way I feel and look. It's greatly improved my performance for backpacking (15-- 20 mile daily hikes with a 30-lb pack for multiple days over multiple mountain passes) as well as road cycling. The programs are well-designed, with the option to replace moves if you have an injury or just want to switch something out. They add programs, one-off sessions, and new features so often that I can't keep up - well worth the subscription, which is far less than I've paid previous trainers. And I don't have to fit into anyone's training calendar - I can do this stuff anytime from my home.
Laughing my ass off .. apparently everyone complaining about monthly fees trains in those free gyms that offer a whole gym and personal training for zero charge
Fantastic review. Hope they hear you out on improvement. Looks like fantastic software & hardware. Just wish it was less plastic, less expensive, and i loath subscriptions.
From looking into it, the $50 is for unlimited accounts - so your whole family and neighbors can use it for the same flat cost. For a couple, it is less expensive. I read they have partner workouts too.
That is an absolutely awesome that it adds weight to the eccentric motion. I'll wait till they have at least a max of 300 lbs. max. I'm probably a minority, just wanting to maintain. Not a fan of the subscription. That should be an option from the beginning. Thanks for the review.
I think it's a great idea and was seriously considering but the monthly subscription is a deal breaker for me, even if it's just for the 1st year. I just don't like being forced into commitments like this. Although more expensive, I'm leaning towards the FreeMotion EXT Dual Cable Cross
This reminds me of Peloton. If you’re a serious athlete you don’t use Peloton, you use Zwift. While this may be the best solution for the average person, I think a lot of us would need the ability to choose our own adventure. Like you said, competition’s against each other, the ability to program our own workouts, even join a club. Literally the weight lifters version of Zwift. Also have you ever tried the Keiser air compression systems? Probably the best cable system I’ve ever used. I could see something like that working well with a wall unit. The really cool thing about those is that it gives you feedback on your velocity, which is a totally different modality.
The society has an attention span of 5.3 seconds. And that is being generous for millennials and younger. So shiney sparkling things work for those types.
This is so ridiculous. It's 2020 and there's a little thing called the internet. If a person can't even educate themselves and need to be spoon-fed routines like a baby playing with an ipad, then they are dumb or incompetent (or both).
@@feral107 true. Depending on how complex you want to get in your program. I use Juggernaut AI and it's giving better results than I was getting doing my own programming. Plus it keeps me accountable knowing I have to send it back and someone will see it.
The way I see this device is it gets you into the mindset of enjoying training, and once you manage to max it out, you can sell it and use that money to upgrade to free weight barbells and stuff. This seems really good for beginners that are intimidated by the concept of going to a gym and not knowing what to do
A great idea overall. But I would never use 99% of the software regarding the virtual trainers. They should make one without all the extra trainer software. Simply the machine and your own fitness program. I love the form factor and the fact the machine tracks your strength and indeed the strength curve of the actual movement. Give me that at about half the price and I would buy one.
i dont think the arms are made of plastic...just the end coverings, maybe? and thank you for your honest review. it means a lot coming from you who obviously KNOWS how to lift weights.
I always struggle with how much weight I should be lifting. I spend more time adjusting the weights at the gym then working out. I like that it's having your own personal trainer without that even higher price tag. I was tempted to get Peleton tread, but I have no issues doing cardio workouts. Thank you for your honest review.
I disagree...garage gyms aren't cheap. While they don't have to be expensive either, the primary draw is not having to share your stuff and not having to drive somewhere to workout. This would also free up a TON of space provided you could live with the "relatively" limited capabilities it has due to the form factor. My issue with it is primarily that electronic, subscription-based stuff tends to have built in obsolescence. The experience is so different looking than a traditional free-weight one that I'm not sure how easy it would be to center all my fitness routines on the Tonal. For that price, I wouldn't be able to justify to myself (or my wife) having both a bunch of free weights, various weight machines AND a Tonal. I bought myself a ForceUSA G9 Smith Machine rack-combo and I love it, but honestly I never would have thought I'd own something so expensive and certainly never imagined using, let alone owning a Smith Machine. And yet here I am, and it makes working out so much less of a hassle. I am easily hitting the weights twice as often and wasting less time simply because I can walk out into my garage and the setup is ready to go. I could see Tonal filling a similar need for the right kind of person. How many of these people exist right now is the big question.
@@brutuslugo3969 Doesn't matter. This shit is a scam. 600 dollars year for something you already paid 3,000 dollars for. You can find training video for free on RUclips.

Have you ever reviewed Kaiser equipment? Having been a pro athlete for several years, that’s what we used…this thing reminds me of the Kaiser functional trainers. If you lag bolt a Kaiser functional trainer to your cement floor, same thing, save for the display…me, I don’t need the video game - I think most ppl, these days, do. But yeah…Kaiser is very solid equipment (uses pneumatics). Now it’s really expensive but that constant, no-momentum resistance gets you SERIOUS gains! Anyway, thanks for the review, gonna check out a few more.
Yup…… I too prefer steel plates and barbell noise and abuse…hahaha…. Thanks for your honest review, I may consider it for my home gym for upper body. And my wife would love it too…
Never even heard of something like this until now. Yea this is absolutely the future. I dunno about this brand in particular, but yea most people don't care about typical gym shit. This thing is way more appealing to the average person who doesn't want to go a damn gym, or to have gym crap to take up all their space. It's just a compact thing on the wall of their home, and it's just part of what they do in their day, like washing the cooking food, taking the dog for a walk, etc. Which would also cut down on tv-time, which is good. Plus this thing can do stuff that we usually can't. Like varying the weight for JUST the negative, for example. A huge element is that it just does all the shit for ya. All the programming, the weight selection, how the weight varies during the lifts. People generally don't want to bother with figuring all this shit out, and they also don't want a personal trainer, especially not at a gym. So yea this is interesting.
Lol stop complaining
Eggsfuckingzactly.
Something to note - I believe that you actually are only required to pay the subscription for the first year. You don't need it after that, and you can create your own workout plans to follow on the device. It's actually really easy to create them too, you can program in supersets, rest periods, etc.
@@k819849 the subscription is optional. It pays for the new content they are providing with workouts.
That’s why this trash will fail .
@@arshanmostafavi9621 It bugs me but I actually think it will succeed because there's enough dumb people out there that will still buy it.

They bump into a guy who has some marketing power. It will be quite negative for them.

I think this thing would be awesome in place of a traditional cable machine. The biggest turnoff I see is the subscription. This was a factor when I was looking at treadmills. That is the whole point of a home gym, convenience and only having to pay once.
Exactly what i was thinking. Why pay to train at home?

Agreed.

They then rescheduled it, after waiting for months, for it to arrive on Christmas eve. I let tonal know that after waiting around all day, no one showed AGAIN. On Christmas Eve! They had no idea until I made them aware. Seems like a nice piece of equipment but not worth the headache.

So. It costs more than a good rack, barbell, bench, and iron. All assuming you can find any of those currently. I just need 4 more 45s.
This is a product that I could see being huge, but oddly enough, you’d need to take away a few of the “features”. A wall mounted cable cross over. That sounds like an amazing idea!

I'm sold.

Appreciate this. 4k is a ton to spend on a piece of equipment with a monthly membership to boot. I'm torn.
For being a first of it's kind, seems like a great starting point. These can only get better if the demand is there.

Nice interview am interested but not serious at this time. Again totally appreciate the invite and the time you took to give us some valuable info.
Can you use it freestyle. I don't need classes just want the cables.

coming back to this to mention that coop keeps talking about it being worth it when the price drops. well, as of january 10 2024, the price has gone UP a thousand dollars, and still requires a mandatory membership.
did all this research because I was seriously considering it, I went and measured my wall, looked into my rental contract, read reviews, then went to the purchase screen and noticed the $50 a month "mandatory" subscription fee. they should have led with that because that's a hard pass.
it's a gym membership but they save money on overhead by storing the equipment in your house. my local gym is $40 a month and its always empty because most people go to planet fitness for $12 a month. plus I dont have to make a HUGE down payment.

I’m thinking about purchasing this as well and cancel the gym membership I have that never use because I’m embarrassed to workout in front of others.
i thought it only pays 1 time for this device to use it and subscribed to Tonal's channel.
100% same
The device is good but that monthly pay is what make it irrelevant for me like, i know what and how to workout i just need the device

Current is being applied to the motor to generate some level of holding torque, and the user is overcoming that torque and essentially back driving the motor. So yeah, Coop was right in assuming “magnets”, since a major component of electric motors is a rotor constructed of magnets.
Its magnetic resistance
We've had a Tonal since December of 2018 and we love it. It was especially great when the pandemic hit, but we work from home and I love the programs. As a retired Marine and disabled veteran, I found that a lot of the workouts included exercises that were recommended by my PT, so that was a bonus for me. Not for everybody and yeah a little pricey, but IMO it is cheaper than a 3 year membership at a gym and you can do it right at home (what she said). Just my 2 cents on that.
Hey! Has your tonal functioned properly since you got it in 2018? Is it still working well almost 5 years later?
Thank you for your valuable service
This would be great for apartments...if it was a standalone unit. Some apartments won't allow you to drill holes in the walls.
It's better to ask forgiveness than permission. Just drill the holes and patch them up when you move out.
Yes, please do a one year update! 🎉
and you lost me at subscription service, I am killing all my subscriptions at the end of the year, that stuff adds up, and is never worth what you get out of it.
The only subscription I keep is Sirius in my truck. OTA radio is near impossible to listen to it's so bad. And I kept the Juggernaut AI for programming. It is the best $27/month I spend.
@@bmstylee If you ever want to try something else, Sheiko's AI has worked well for me, and is a bit cheaper.
@@BlazinLow305 hmmm. May have to check it out.
I feel like my wife would love this. I can't get my head around the system personally, but I know people who would love it
I’m 56 year old man,I’ve been working out a month on this machine I set up a 5 x 5 custom workout takes me a half an hour three times a week I’ve put on 3 1/2 pounds of muscle the best home gym I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot of them. The $50 a month isn’t much considering most people spend that in a day at getting coffee and fast food
This has to be the best review video I’ve ever seen, of anything. Great work.
Patrick Bateman would have a tonal in his apartment and office.
Hahahahaha and then apply his facial cream
Only if he could watch porn on it.
Hey, Coop- careful what you ask for, they’ll be contacting you soon to be one of their trainers. I’ll see you on the 200lb deadlift soon 😅
The $50 a month is and will always be a dealbreaker for me.
Just out of principle if nothing else.
Agreed😒
I want to hate it, but it seems like a good product. I'm an old school, clangin and bangin kind of guy, but my girlfriend would love this. Peloton has proven the model. Throw a big screen on it...check. Have a trainer that guides your workout...check. Have a monthly based continuity model to sustain growth...check. Make it at a price point where it becomes a status symbol to own one....check.
It's about $6000.
Literally watched a video of a girl practicing weight lifting in the gym yesterday and she pissed all over the floor. Like girl bye
“So.... I’m well above average” 6:55
This cost way more than any gym membership.... even some of the pricer gyms only charge $30 a month... this thing is 3000 up front and $50 a month.
Thanks for the info on the air compressor!
Very solid and well done review. Thanks. Mine is being installed in 4 days. Thanks for doing this.
“It’s basically Netflix for training”
What has this world become?
The society has an attention span of 5.3 seconds. And that is being generous for millennials and younger. So shiney sparkling things work for those types.
The future
This is so ridiculous. It's 2020 and there's a little thing called the internet. If a person can't even educate themselves and need to be spoon-fed routines like a baby playing with an ipad, then they are dumb or incompetent (or both).
@@feral107 true. Depending on how complex you want to get in your program. I use Juggernaut AI and it's giving better results than I was getting doing my own programming. Plus it keeps me accountable knowing I have to send it back and someone will see it.
@@Felixthecat25 far from it. You will get better results with iron and steel than with a fancy iPad. Iron and steel are not as fancy though.
Great concept for some people, I'd love to have one for supplemental work. But a barbell will always exceed my genetic potential.
Whoa you bought this? WTFFFF YOU NEVER DISAPPOINT!
i dont think the arms are made of plastic...just the end coverings, maybe? and thank you for your honest review. it means a lot coming from you who obviously KNOWS how to lift weights.
I've come to thumbs up before even watching now haha!
Same
Thank you for your service to this great garage gym country. Your efforts are not done in vain. 🙏🏼
Agreed
Jonathan Soriano I agree. Always good information
I always struggle with how much weight I should be lifting. I spend more time adjusting the weights at the gym then working out. I like that it's having your own personal trainer without that even higher price tag. I was tempted to get Peleton tread, but I have no issues doing cardio workouts. Thank you for your honest review.
Goes completely against the reason of having a home gym , cost a lot and subscription and extra , while a normal squat rack and barbell
Normal squat rack and barbell don’t fit in most people’s apartments
@@brianthompson5672 Good argument. Still not worth. 3000 dollars, plus the 600 a year subscription that goes on top. I'm not convinced this machine is more effective than regular dumbbells and pullup bar.
