Angel was *only* "all soul having" I believe was his quote, because it was forced on him by a gypsy curse (those gypsies didn't seem to care that if he ever was perfectly happy, he would lose his soul - and be a killer again) But Spike chose to have a soul. She didn't love him. At least not at this point in the series. The relationship Spike and Buffy had during season 6 was not about love. Plus, Buffy was too traumatized and overcome with deep depression and self-hatred to love him at that point.

Tara‘s question shook Buffy to the core because she is in love with Spike and isn’t ready to accept that about herself. He doesn’t have a soul. He shouldn’t be capable of making her feel this way but his taking care of Dawn, patrolling with the scoobies, and treating her with such compassion before they slept together. However, both started a relationship at the wrong time. She was depressed and Spike, as much as the love was true for him, was toxic. S7 does redeem their love and affirm it.

Same here. I was only 19 or 20 when season 6 aired and I was definitely too young to really understand the depth of Buffy's emotional issues during this season. It definitely hits me harder as an adult with actual life experience. The whole series is actually better to watch as an adult; there are so many things and subtle nuances I either missed or did not fully comprehend as a teenager.
This is actually pretty iconic that 20 years ago, a woman is asking an out gay character if her feelings for someone who is a man is wrong. It's like...tables are turned 👁️👄👁️
She’s not ready to love him but she does at this point. She breaks down when she sees that her hesitation could be misconstrued as using him and she cares enough about him to want to stop but is conflicted about needing him, only feeling anything when with him. I always felt Buffy couldn’t accept or love herself first because she had to let go of a quiet and easy life she hoped for - having some semblance of a teen romance with Angel gave her high school feels and that’s more why she cherished the relationship, now resentful that that part of her life is over forever and she HAS to grow and become stronger for every new big bad. Spike loves and accepts her for her, all of her, especially the parts Buffy won’t accept about having to be a slayer and even when she goes into autopilot as one. Her issues make her keep EVERYONE at arms length so she can’t let herself start to truly love Spike until she realizes she can keep growing with him and he’ll support her no matter what.
I think buffy judges herself harshly because of her own morals and principles. Like how she did truly love faith as a sister because of the shared bond no one else could fathom, I think its she was so hard on her (admittedly she did do a lot of bad things) but so did willow and even Giles (although I'm not sure how much buffy knows about his) and obviously the fact that she doesnt know how to function after spending who knows how long in her own little heavenly afterlife.
you know it's an intersting situation, she had no problem loving Angel, i think she did have real feelings for spike possibly even love, the only reason i think she felt i guess the best word is disgusted with herself for having those feelings, is because he didn't have a soul, but i think she didn't want to love him because of it, when she did love him
@@mizzdiiva92 well she did just come back from the dead so it's understandable for her to be a little depressed and yeah once she was thinking clearly, she wasn't sleeping with him anymore
'she had no problem loving angel' it's because he had a soul and spike didn't, even though spike loved her without a soul and angel was a mindless deranged lunatic without a soul.
At that point, Buffy does feel something for Spike (refers to him as a boyfriend later on, is jealous/devastated when he hooks up with Anya etc) that’s why she looks surprised/gets quiet when Tara asks her flat out but she doesn’t love herself. He’s not ready for her either but knows he loves her. Whedon even said Spike and Buffy are the couple, Angel and her was a love that couldn’t be. Spike and Buffy end up together in the comic
the show should have had more scenes between Tara and Buffy. They had a really strong trust and friendship, but it was always overshadowed by the demons and the drama of other relationships.
I think she did love him but she understood it was a toxic relationship. Still, most of it was toxic because they were hiding it, specially her, she felt embarrased. About Tara... I am rewatching the show now, I'm about to finish the 4th season and gosh, she is such a good person. I mean, she is the only one of them who was genuinely and purely good. Which is fun because she was actually a demon.
There relationship was toxic because they were both in a bad place. Buffy just got back from the dead, so that was a sign. I don't think she loved him yet to be honest, maybe had feelings but not love.
I see where Dawn gets it from in this season. Buffy goes after Spike to make herself feel something and basically abuses him. She knows he loves her and will do anything for her yet when he walks away, she goes after him because she needs a fix and then becomes the victim. Buffy thinks she killed Someone and has to turn herself in, is never home bc she has to work to take care of Dawn but Dawn makes it all about her and throws a tantrum. It’s quite nauseating. Oh, I love the show and one of the things I love is the authentic situations of the characters. It’s good that they evoke emotions even frustration.
This Scene is so Fucking Heartbreaking. I do think Buffy grew to have feelings for Spike after being Resurrected and getting a chance to see the side of him that’s still human and she knows that Spike does Truly Love her but he still a Vampire without a soul. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Amber Benson both do Incredible Performances. Sarah Michelle Gellar showing Buffy Summers guilt for sleeping with a Spike a Soulless Vampire and Vampire that has already killed two Slayers already. Amber Benson showing that Tara Maclay is truly is The Best Member of The Scooby Gang and Deserved to be a part of The Main Cast of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Tara never Judged Buffy and tried the best of her abilities to confront Buffy during her Darkest Hour of need.
She didn't treat him right, but he didn't treat her right either. He exploited and enabled Buffy's depression to keep her coming back to him. They were both pretty abusive to each other.
@@Cassandra765 Tbh, she didn't treat him badly after he got his soul. In the beginning, she was indifferent and later in the Season, she was actually supportive of him, and did not treat him like shit.
I loved Tara but did anyone else get sort of mad when she “outed” Buffy to Willow when they got back together? I know she kept the secret for awhile, but I think Buffy would have preferred to tell Willow on her own. And I hated when Dark Willow threw it in Buffy’s face
Because she cared about spike, and he cared for her and both of them felt so much evil around them that feeling that sense of toxic power felt like a crutch for them to lean on. Similar to Spike's scene in the church after he got his soul back and he felt everything he had ever done for the first time.
Why does Buffy not want to be forgiven. What's the impulse to feel she needs or deserves to be condemned? Is there a name for this or any writing on this phenomenon.

'she had no problem loving angel' it's because he had a soul and spike didn't, even though spike loved her without a soul and angel was a mindless deranged lunatic without a soul.
Always loved Tara. She was my fave of the Scoobies after Willow. And the most mature of them after Giles. Just so sad that she died !!
This is a really emotional scene from this show. Kind of almost made me cry. Almost.
I just wanted Buffy and spike to be together. 😢😢❤
She said she loves him in the end. And i truly thinks she does. That was joss's way of giving us closure
@@damnitnanet122 Don't they break up in the comic??
Skyler D yeah but it’s left open
We also have to remember in season 6 he still didn’t have a soul.
This scene always hurt so much
the show should have had more scenes between Tara and Buffy. They had a really strong trust and friendship, but it was always overshadowed by the demons and the drama of other relationships.
i'm built different, i would simply accept that i love a soulless vampire and enjoy it. i wouldn't loathe myself for loving a monster.
Somehow I can relate all too well. The perpetual feeling that you need to be punished for your sins even when no one else is judging you.
This is why I like Tara so much. She has a gentle, non-judgmental, nurturing spirit.
Still havent make it to the part where they discover she is a demon though haha
She’s not even a demon. It was a family lie to try and keep the women in line. She’s human
There relationship was toxic because they were both in a bad place. Buffy just got back from the dead, so that was a sign. I don't think she loved him yet to be honest, maybe had feelings but not love.
Both if the ruled this scene and thus season!
I see where Dawn gets it from in this season. Buffy goes after Spike to make herself feel something and basically abuses him. She knows he loves her and will do anything for her yet when he walks away, she goes after him because she needs a fix and then becomes the victim. Buffy thinks she killed
Someone and has to turn herself in, is never home bc she has to work to take care of Dawn but Dawn makes it all about her and throws a tantrum. It’s quite nauseating.
Oh, I love the show and one of the things I love is the authentic situations of the characters. It’s good that they evoke emotions even frustration.
I hate that they killed off tara that's something I really hate about the show x
Fucking incredible acting
Queen
I feel like people never took into account Spikes feelings. Yes he is a Demon but he did love her and she didn’t treat him right
She didn't treat him right, but he didn't treat her right either. He exploited and enabled Buffy's depression to keep her coming back to him. They were both pretty abusive to each other.
@@NitaXerxa The man almost raped her?! Why is she expected to treat him good after that?
@@Cassandra765 Tbh, she didn't treat him badly after he got his soul. In the beginning, she was indifferent and later in the Season, she was actually supportive of him, and did not treat him like shit.
@@fiction5559 This is true. She was there for him a lot in season 7 and she didn't have to do that.
@@Cassandra765 Yup.
She she asks not to be forgiven I’m fee such sadness and familiarity
I don’t know why the show considers Willow Buffy’s best friend when Tara was a far better friend to her.
Hard
I loved Tara but did anyone else get sort of mad when she “outed” Buffy to Willow when they got back together? I know she kept the secret for awhile, but I think Buffy would have preferred to tell Willow on her own. And I hated when Dark Willow threw it in Buffy’s face
I never understand why buffy returns with those problems
Because she was in heaven
Aaaand next episode she ends up teasing Spike
Because she cared about spike, and he cared for her and both of them felt so much evil around them that feeling that sense of toxic power felt like a crutch for them to lean on. Similar to Spike's scene in the church after he got his soul back and he felt everything he had ever done for the first time.
I wished one of the others died instead of Tara . Buffy was always judged by them . They were hipócrites. Buffy deserves a friend like Tara .
Why does Buffy not want to be forgiven. What's the impulse to feel she needs or deserves to be condemned?
Is there a name for this or any writing on this phenomenon.
Shame and guilt.
Why spike can touch buffy?
When she was brought back, something had changed. It must’ve messed with the chip in spikes head
It was a glitch in the chip in his head. It 'registers' Buffy as dead since The Gift even though she's been resurrected.
This is exactly why Buffy and Spike DO NOT belong together.
false. they should't of been together here yeah but once they grew and could actually love each other right like in season 7 then they were soulmates.
@@Justinhulk I respectfully disagree. Both actors who played the characters don’t even believe that. Sarah believes Angel was Buffy’s soulmate and James says the relationship was toxic. There are still a lot of issues with their relationship in season 7.
@@marslander2488 well sarah literally said she didn't even watch the show lmao and yeah james had to act and do the rape thing so cool and yeah it stopped being toxic its better than angel literally grooming her
At least it's Spike and not a guy with kids by three different women, no job, felony convictions and outstanding warrants.
I. Love. Tara. She's an amazing character.
