Velma Review of Season 2 the Scooby Doo series on HBO Max. After the first series released no-one thought there would be a second, but HBO Max gave Mindy Kaling the money and so here we are. Once more into the breach dear friends. Velma is doubling down on everything that came before and if it's anything like the first series, will get progressively worse. So strap in. 🤣🤣They hated the fact that the Hex Girls became beloved characters because they were sexy rocker chicks. Hated it so much they are trying to destroy them in a show nobody is actually watching, and the few that are find themselves laughing hysterically at how bad it is.

even hours later the disrespect for the girls/band did in fact piss me off even to now. this is added to the fact that there was a hex girls show that was supposedly proposed. now i may have problems with modern hollywood but i was willing to risk the disappointment for a good spinoff that could have actually been an amazing sleeper hit. instead i got 2 seasons of this trash fire instead of badass girls rocking the stage and solving supernatural mysteries that would have drawn in old and new fans alike

Love how Velma is against Ghost being behind the murders, but thinks a woman who was IMPALED by a stalactite came back from the dead and is murdering people who have no relation to the type of victims she killed when she was alive is more plausible.

That is the ONLY way I sympathised with Velma: her mother disappeared, no one cared (granted we have no clue if the mother is as bad as Velma), then within a year of her mother going missing her father had knocked up the café owner (cos by the start of the first sh*t-show the mother had been gone for 2 years and the waitress was ready to give birth). While I feel _some_ sympathy for the waitress (she still slept with a married man before the wife was confirmed dead) and her baby, the father was a POS

Velma calling herself a rationalist is the greatest insult to the heights a human mind can reach that I have EVER heard.
Why is it that disrespecting the Hex Girls is even more offensive than disrespecting the original Scooby-Doo IP? I wasn't even a fan of the "monsters are real" phase of Scooby-Doo but dang, bringing those vampire witch rock stars into this trash is atrocious.
I think it's because we've had 'bad' versions of Scooby-Doo before, and "Scooby-Doo, but adult with real murders," is something that Cynical Reviews pointed out as being the most obvious route to take Scooby-Doo since you can find a lot of parodies on RUclips, including from Family Guy and The Venture Bros, that do that.
But, no one's ever really portrayed The Hex Girls like that because they're supposed to just be hot goth girls.
Thinking on it, they probably could have gone the Aqua Teen Hunger Force route, keeping the Scooby gang mystery solvers but amp up the stupidity and surrealness of the villains.
Like, have them find out the mystery of the boogeyman, then reveal that his motivation for stealing Shaggy's dick was that they were trying to make a dickship to return to their luxury condo on the dick planet.
The Hex Girls were some of the best things about late 90s early 2000s Scooby Doo imo.

It's supposed to be a parody of the South Park episode where they say "Shit," a whole bunch, but instead they not only say "Dick," a whole bunch, they actually have hundreds of dicks on-screen.
It's one of the very few times that an adult cartoon actually went further than South Park did.
An underrated joke is the news anchor at the end is obviously going to call the villain a dick at the end, but he doesn't, he just says "He was truly a... a... a something."

God, the thing that might annoy me about Velma more than anything else is the writers' insistence that bizarre inside jokes are widely recognized meta commentary. "I've smoked so much people think I'm from NORTHERN California." What? Rich people worship feet? I... what? WHAT? These are inside jokes at best, weird regional humor at worst. It'd be like me, a NHite, making a joke about Mainers being toothless fishfolk and expecting everyone else in the world to get the joke. It demonstrates an insular life divorced from wider reality.
Season 1 had a lot of references or stereotypes that weren't actual references or stereotypes, so they're just keeping it going. You have to respect the consistency.

I'm from California and that first one was still restarted as hell. There's no regional "huhur that area smokes more weed" nonsense throughout the state. We all know Humboldt, we all know Santa Cruz, we all know LA. Weed is smoked too much everywhere here. That joke would only ever be told by an extremely insulated, uppermiddle class, boring square, the type of person who never shouldve been given their own show

If this was a good Scooby Doo show, Mystery Inc would encounter a monstrous caricatures of themselves causing trouble and set a trap to capture them. And when unmasking them, it would reveal to be Mindy Kaling and her cronies wanting to ruin Mystery Inc's reputation for kicks.
That was basically the plot of the “What’s New Scooby-Doo” Valentines Day special.

Velma pushed Dalphne away and when she got new friends she got mad at her, so she used Norvile as a means of having some one to push around. Velma bullied Daphne a lot more than her friends bullied Velma, she went after fred because he was a rich hot guy. Yet of course Daphne was into Velma, so she was conflicted between Daphne and Fred. She turned Fred into a feminist, so when he was into her. Velma decided to go for Daphne in which was a toxic relationship, but then the moment Norvil got fed up with her, she wanted Norvil. Velma doesn't deserve anyone.
One small correction: it’s not Velma, it’s Mindy Kaling. Everything else is correct.

Velma is probably one of the worst bastardization of an IP that I've ever seen. It truly shows how far detached these executives and tv show personalities are, and it's the main reason why i just stick to youtube and anime nowadays. Not even Disparu with a beard could save this, and it could literally save lives.
Yeah, it doesn't even pass as an edgy, adult-aimed take on the show. There's no reason at all it has to be part of the Scooby Doo IP.

If this show was the same but with completely new characters, as in NOT attached to an ALREADY existing IP, most of us probably wouldn't so much as bat an eye at it & dismiss it as yet another tasteless generic adult cartoon.
What I don't get is why they've made Velma an unpopular spaz who was failing her classes (if her attempts to hide her bad grades from her amnesiac mother in S1 are to be believed). Classic Velma was a freaking genius who never got pouty because of the opinions of vapid personality vampires. She was too busy being awesome.

"Fred's dad is a stand in for the audience" Given Fred's dad was voiced by Fred's VA on earlier series, it's more of a "why am I part of this?"
And she's already forgotten that she and her mom are now squatting in the house Velma's mom abandoned years ago fter kicking out her dad and stepmom and baby sibling.
It's the "I am very smart" dialogue for Velma that is getting on my nerves the most. They're trying to emphasize Velma as a logical skeptic but because Mindy and co. are stupid they have no idea how intelligent or rational people actually talk. I know a lot of people who are intellectuals in academic fields and they don't talk anything like how Mindy seems to think they do. They don't go around using big "logic" words all the time or going "that's reductive!" unless they are in a professional academic setting. They actually talk in more or less the same kind of patterns as everyone else. Just smarter.
Seriously. I'm just a dude that got into reading dictionaries as a kid so I got a decent vocabulary, no high academic background so I do occasionally pepper my interactions with other people using big words. But I never do it to convince people I'm a big brain or even smarter than them. I just like saying certain words for fun. They really need a lesson in normal diction.
Well... No... people with better language skills do use more complicated vocabulary as normal speech. But you can tell when someone is posturing instead of using words they normally use.

A) the previous regime at WB paid for two seasons straight up. B) Cancelling the series would mean that Mindy would have made out like a bandit. Literally. They would have had to pay her out a cancellation fee, AND pretend that her show would have been a success and paid her out MORE. She would have been stealing they money. By releasing it, she'll only get the base fee and rightfully mocked as failure.

You know, aside from the way they dress the characters, this is not Scooby Doo. I can't find any information that they have an agreement with Hanna Barbarra. No Mystery Machine, Shaggy is race swapped, Velma is, no Scooby Doo, this is like the earmarks of a show that was put together with the leftovers that the Scooby Doo lawyers said they didn't want.
Wait until they bring in Scrappy as the murderer, though.

A psychopath lacks emotion. Mindy is very capable of hatred, anger, smugness and a whole host of other negative emotions. She is a sociopath. That means she does feel emotion but she doesnt care about anyone else but herself. She knows that her bad actions hurt other people, she just doesnt care.
Why do people think weird shaved heads look good?! Only a handful are fine but when 85% of your head is shaved it just looks ugly

First of all: love the hair. As for Velma, thanks for suffering for the rest of us! I grew up loving all things Scooby Doo and can't believe this abomination got a second season. At least your commentary and humor make its existence somewhat bearable...
Once again this cartoon raises the question:
"Why would anyone of the Mystery Inc gang be friends with each other in this version of the story when they seem to completely hate each other's very existance?"
The writters probabley tried to have the dynamic were team members fight and insult eachother on the regular but forgot or more likely missed the part were those team members at the end of the day will allways have eachoters back or trust eachoter completly so now we are left with all the disfunction but non of the team camistry
I wouldn’t have minded if the main characters had started out disliking each other or just simply not talking to each other due to being in different social groups and then team up out of necessity in order to solve the murders. Then we could see them slowly start to come around and enjoy each other’s company. I think that might be what they’re going for, but it’s not executed well at all. The characters are just mean to each other for no reason.
If Hollywood still had self-respect Kaling would have been relegated to a regular spot on a daily quiz show long, long ago.

Yeah, I don't like her voice acting at all- it's so bland and colorless. It's just as well much of the script is bad, since she's killed the few potentially funny lines with her delivery.
