      I agree about different markets. Skx has become an icon for WIS who knows the historical significance , the new fives are targeted toward much larger mainstream buyers who mainly buy watch based on name recognition and looks and don't go into depths of history/ISO that WIS do. They would find hacking and see through case back more important vs ISO/hx..two different buywrs

    I love my skx007/009 with its jingle jangle jubilee. So comfortable on the wrist, like a pair of old slippers. I've often been tempted to swap for a "higher qualilty, more substantial " bracelet then remember how incredibly comfortable and good looking the stock jubilee truly is. The Skx is beloved for what it offers : a genuine tool watch, 200m, ISO certification not just depth rating but also shock resistance and high build quality all for very little money. That's the charm of the SKX for many enthusiasts.

      Agree, I find older bracelets like the sxk007 and vintage hollow Rolex Jubilee lot more comfortable vs the new jubilee/oyster on my newer rolexes. Doesn't feel or look nearly as solid or well made but so much more comfortable, and truer vintage vibe/charm/overall package
      Also agree with charm of skx, it's not about objective hacking this, sapphire that, it's about the overall feel/emotion conveyed by the watch.

      Michael Riera I enjoyed the cheapo jubilee as well. If you’re looking for something really cool try thestrap code Angus Jubilee… not cheep but it is the Best bracelet out there, And they have one that’s designed just for the SKX. I also have one on a very thick shark mesh bracelet with a great clasp. Pick that one up on eBay for 20 bucks… Liked it so much I bought another right away to keep it in storage for another diver one day. Cheers

      Chin Yoon hacking doesn’t matter… You’re right… When the tolerance is our plus and minus what they are… So you get it set to the second and one week later it’s five minutes off… Kind of pointless… Sapphire crystal would’ve been great…I wore my SKX’s on the Jubilee for a long time before changing them out. Took away the screw down crown? That’s a security that should be on any sports watch… And the tooling was already there to continue with the screw down crown… It was part of the machining process already…So they took it away purposefully…

      @@JohnBuckmaster-sw3wm I fully agree John. I have the Angus J Louis on my SRPA21 Prospex X, PADI Pepsi Turtle and it is stunning. By far the most comfortable and good looking watch in my collection. I would suggest the Angus over the Super J Louis any time. A few dollars more but you get what you pay for and you NEVER have to second guess yourself every time you buckle up.

Can’t stand what Seiko did to these...If you’re going to make a diver make a diver… There’s no such thing as a sports watch diver… Taking away that screw down crown is the kicker… A sports watch should have a screw down Crown period. 5kx line has nothing to do with the original skx..and I'm not talking about the specs, but also about the design, the dial etc. The new 5kx line is just a pale copy of the skx, you cannot compare the them.
    Seiko skx is a very good investment.
    You will be able to buy a new old stock skx for a few thousand in a few years...if you can find one of course. Nothing that came out on the market from Seiko in recent years or other models are like skx..whatever some say. It is already considered vintage since was produced from 1996, but they are also rare because no one really sells the SKX007 anymore, being very collectible. It will be quite difficult to catch an unmodified skx in the next years. I personally just bought 3 new old stock from an individual who had 6 skx007, brand new, $240 each. When I called to get more...they were already sold...
    Wait 5 years from now...people will be able to trade a nos skx..for a Rolex. Why? Because Rolex is still produced...while Skx is no longer produced and has become a classic neo-vintage tool.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Год назад +2

      The 5kx line has a LOT to do with the SKX on a superficial design and appearance basis…. But not the specs.
      What you mean is: you think you will be able to trade an SKX for a current model Rolex in 5 years time (as you almost certainly know, there are MANY Rolex models no longer produced)… but you would be wrong there. NOS SKX will appreciate in value for sure, but not to $10k each. Not in 5 years.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  10 месяцев назад

      It’s not a beads of rice bracelet. People don’t like it because it has a very cheap pressed metal construction to it… it serves its function but there is no doubt it’s cheap and nasty.

    Water resistance rating is one thing but real world performance is another thing. While I would agree that for both hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure, the presentation case back would most likely fail with less pressure, the screw down crown would not necessarily be a factor. I have spent a lifetime in the field of Oceanography, designing, fabricating and deploying very sophisticated equipment for hundreds of metres depth. In the case of sealing, it all depends on whether a compressed gasket or a properly designed and fabricated O-ring is used. The sealing principle is totally different between the two. Most people with the screw down crown craze must realize that while it may possible improve the water resistance integrity, it is mostly intended to prevent the crown from being inadvertently pulled out under water. Even if it is, a proper captive O-ring on the stem or stem sleeve will guarantee water resistance. The deeper it goes the better it will seal due to pressure..

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Год назад +1

      Thanks for sharing your expertise Kevin. That’s all true in my understanding. In reality, with time the integrity of parts change and I would still choose not to go underwater with a watch like the 5KX, especially after it’s a few years old. With the SKX, experience tells that the water resistance lasts.

  • @Mike-kc8rl
    @Mike-kc8rl Год назад +1

    I personally like both and agree with the score becoming even! The skx used prices are going up to crazy levels, and surprisingly, the opersites can be said for their replacements ? • @PerthWAtch

      Sam King Most of them have a Sunburst affect… One is Matt black… None of them compare to the former SKX. Biggest gripe… They took away the screw down crown which was already part of the machining process… The tooling was already in place to continue doing that to the case… So they Took it away purposefully… Any sports watch… Diver or not… Should have a screw down crown… It’s a fashion watch now.

    Having had both I can no longer agree on the bezel not having the luminous point and it not having markings all around is a disadvantage.
    Maybe if you do really use them for diving, I reckon that 1 of every 1000 buyers might actually do so. But if used as normal, sporty everyday watch, the version without the markings all around simply looks cleaner and just better. Likewise, the luminous dot made the old one look strange in the dusk.
    So, it's a disadvantage in the video ( as stuff has been 'taken away' ), but in reality it's an advantage. Likewise with the reduction to 100m water resistance. Yes, ok, mark it down, BUT - like 999 out of 1000 buyers of this specific watch won't ever use that feature, so be mindful of how important something like this actually is to the target audience.
    When, at the end of the day, one watch looses to the other in points achieved in total, just remember that some of the points literally do not matter at all for the 'normal' user of these watches. Oh, and diving being a rather expensive hobby - meaning you must have certain means to participate in it - I must add that out of the few 'real' divers I know, noone would be seen dead in the water with an automatic for 250 bucks.
    My point: Too much diver-centric wishwash in reviews of these watches when in actuality I do not believe that a lot of people buying these specific watches at these price points care about that at all. And if you cared for 200m water resistance, you wouldn't buy in this price range is my opinion. But that's no knock at all, as I said, I owned both of them and they are beautiful watches.
    Got the Sports 5 with the new gunmetal bracelet, it's an absolute stunner to me.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Год назад +1

      Mate, the SKX is ISO 6425 compliant - that’s something Rolex and just about any Swiss brand you can think of don’t bother to comply with. $250 or not, it is dive fit.
      The reality of the dot not being there being an advantage is just your opinion. I think it’s a disadvantage hence my comments. Opinion or not, the SKX bezel can be used to time in the dark, the 5KX cannot - case closed!
      As for water resistance, I wouldn’t trust snorkelling or skin diving with the 5KX given 100m and non-screw crown. It’s not about static water resistance… it’s the dynamic spikes in pressure with motions that will kill it. That’s why if you’re gonna water ski (yet never go below 2m underwater) a 200m rated watch is recommended.

    • @TheGrandmaMoses
      @TheGrandmaMoses Год назад

      @@PerthWAtch Yeah of course it's just an opinion, just like every statement in my post is nothing but my opinion.
      Thanks for answering, my point was never that one watch isn't clearly better than the other in a specific field, my point was that this specific field isn't that interesting for what I believe to be the target audience of the watches.
      Still, nice video and everything, at the end of the day most of this stuff comes down to personal preference. Both watches are nice value for the money nonetheless, just missing a sapphire crystal to be top dogs in the category of automatic divers with a daydate complication for under 300 bucks.

    I'll personally keep my Skx007 with the ISO 6425 diver's rating. That means EACH one is pressure tested to 25% above its depth rating. It's a true icon that was made from '96-'19 and funny enough because of the new release of these Seiko 5s, doesn't have a dated look and is still a relevant design. It's got retro and modern coexisting together. If that matters to anyone...
    I'd still love the watch even if Seiko retired that particular case design.
    The 7S26 is a bullet-proof movement that has been discontinued. Sure, it doesn't hack or handwind but the second hand can be "hacked" by turning the crown counterclockwise and it takes a few shakes to get it going if it's stopped, as opposed to unscrewing the crown and winding it, NBD to me.
    Just a few thoughts about it...

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing the thoughts - the ISO divers rating does feature a whole barrage of tests and is indeed reassuring of durability.
      The manual wind function in updated movements (eg. 4R35) give the option to wind it that way. You don’t have to do that of course… you can still pretend it doesn’t manual wind and just shake the watch to get it going ;)

      The aging SKX as a diver's watch (7S26) overshadowed Seiko's flagship models. As it is a commercial success, instead of simply making it disappear, the company decided to improve it (4R36 movement, pierced horn, lume applied) which allowed it to declassify it as a diving watch and revitalize the watch. segment of the seiko 5 at the same time. No longer classified as a diving watch it was possible to remove the screwed crown (which is an advantage for a sports and work watch) and to add an elegant transparent cover to the back. The company did not save: the savings realized by the withdrawal of the ISO6425 standard were reinvested directly in its improvement. PS- I wear an SKX 24 hours a day.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  3 года назад +1

      That doesn’t make sense - the movement and the case back does not dictate whether a watch can be ISO 6425 or not. The decision to withdraw the ISO compliance has nothing to do with those factors, and there is nothing elegant about a case back showing a plain ebauche movement like the ones in here. Seiko did this for profits and they have done so successfully, let’s not pretend otherwise.

  • @christopherpetrone5499
    @christopherpetrone5499 4 года назад

    Good video, not a bad review of the two watches. However, IMO, I would've given the SKX an extra point for the Case and bezel category because of the lume pip on the bezel making it a more functional bezel. I would've also given the extra point to the SKX for the Dial and Crystal category. IMO, even though it has the applied indicies, the dial on the new model is very generic looking. I'm not crazy about the new logo at all and I prefer the pop of red from the "Diver's 200" to the very generic script "Automatic". Lastly, I would've given minimum one extra, but probably two extra points to the SKX for durability. Wouldn't you say that the added water resistance, ISO certification and screw down crown would make the watch more durable?

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for the comments. I get what you’re saying but for the bezel pip I considered that under performance, and even if you place this in case/bezel objectively speaking the drilled lugs deserve a mark too. The dial appearance is subjective and I can understand what you mean, but objectively one has to concede that applied indices is an added extra, more so than red ink.
      As for durability the mark is intended for a different purpose - overall durability of the case and bracelet based on design and materials. Those issues of ISO and water resistance etc were discussed under performance. I hope that helps clarify my thoughts here. Cheers!

      I think the watch is about the overall package..modding sxk with sapphire/ceramic/hacking/strapcode ruins the watch, rather making it better as it is no longer original.. like any vintage, whether watch or cars, all original is more desirable/valuable as it gives you the true form.
