Here I am 56 remembering our Schwinn stingrays with the small competition front sprockets and ten speed seats ( 1972 ) . We built ramps out of dirt and some out of boards with car tires under them for maximum air . The real trick rear rim was what was called a two speed kickback ( I doubt you've ever even heard of them , they were pretty rare ) . None of us ( in Peoria , Illinois ) had ever heard of BMX yet . I got my first manufactured skateboard in 74' and I think I paid less than 10 dollars for it . It's been great riding and watching things develop over the years and I had to laugh a little when you were talking about helmets . In the early seventies a kid came riding up with a old half face motorcycle helmet and we thought he was probably retarded or something . Lots of scapes bruises and lumps but we never went to the doctor once . We left a pile of broken rims , cracked handlebar stems ( goosenecks ) , miles of ball bearings and busted forks and frames ( probably worth some money now ) . But we had a blast and it's good to see how far it's all gone . RIDE FREE ! PK
Trblemkr1 D Why not use a helmet? I mean they aren't expensive or anything. Small effort for big advantages is what helmets are.

It was a different time , and we weren't real happy with anyone who tried to tell us what to do . The way we looked at it was , those who wanted to make you safe .... also wanted to stop you from riding ( which turned out to be true ) . I did wear a helmet on motorcycles and when I raced motocross of course . We did a lot of things and took the damage that came with it .We figured that it weeded out those couldn't hack it and those who you couldn't trust ( it was about freedom and being outside the norm ) . If you could go back to the late 60's and early 70's you would find out that kids had a pretty free world . We didn't worry about being out of sight of our parents when we were real small and never even heard of pedos . We could go pretty much anywhere and the police didn't bother us and at worst someone would yell at us and tell us to ride somewhere else ( no big deal ) . We did have one old guy who was " security for a shopping center where we rode most of the time . We had a pretty descent track made out of piles of dirt they had dumped. Complete with big berms washboards and jumps . He would chase us with his old Dodge ( became a pretty fun game really ) and when he would catch us he'd stand there whip out his little notepad and demand our names . We would give him names like Elton John , Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison and he'd start yelling at us " Elton.... if I see you here again .. I'm calling the cops " . He was alright , we were having fun and by the next time he had forgotten who we were and it started all over again . Oh helmets ... they're fine . Just remember to ride as free as possible and say no once in while . The world has way too many rules .
