I literally work in marketing - for social media - and I needed to hear this! The trick with marketing is they get you when you're passively paying attention. When your guard is down. When you're trying to unwind from your insane day watching a show... or more often, scrolling your phone. The decanters and declutters in your favorite fragcom groups? They're marketing to you too. Snoozing those groups has really helped me a lot! Thanks for keeping it real!

I fell down the rabbit hole several years ago. I now buy 1 or 2 bottles per year. And, really, I don't really need even that with about 150 bottles in my closet. God bless you Dacob. Nobody else seems to have the courage to address this issue. Many of my bottles were bought out of guilt for the women at the perfume counters who seemed so friendly and caring. I don't blame them... they were just doing their job however there were more than a few phone calls with the standard, "Oh... I'm one bottle away from reaching my quota for the month!" Right.

    • @hausacat

Shameless phone calls! The key word there is "seemed".
You'd be surprised how many videos on here address fragrance and fragrance buying addiction. However, none do it quite like Dacob. He's in a class of his own.

you make a really good point at the end about people going through other people like they go through products now. I've seen quite a few people comment on this now, how no one wants to get to know anyone else anymore. it's all "here for a good time, not a long time."
for me personally, I've had an incredibly difficult time trying to make new friends this year because no one thinks in terms of making new long-term social connections of any kind. it's just party friends, hookups, maybe activity buddies, but never anything substantial and no one wants to put the time in to work through conflicts anymore. it's really disheartening.

I clicked on the video because of the title, but once it started, I thought just by this person's looks alone, "I can't listen to another one of these people." However, the comments were favorable enough that I decided, "What the hell, how bad can it get." Long story shorter, as I watched this video that turned out to be brilliant, I also found myself really liking this person. I could see myself hanging out with and bs ing at a coffee shop type of like. Yeah, first impression, completely wrong. My bad. Subscribed.

I love your approach Dacob, sadly, I find a lot of influencers seem to be victims of greed and encouraging their followers to do the same. Especially for younger people, this excess consumerism isn't a good thing when they have lives to plan and budget for. There is nothing wrong with loving fragrance but there needs to be a shift from this mindless consumerism, I think it's had it's day, or hope it has.

I love this! I have an old vintage mirror tray and a 3 tier little lazy suzan I got off amazon for less than 15 bucks.. I use those for my perfumes on top of a dresser .. Everything is nicely displayed and I also set myself a limit and lets say I am at that max number, I have to finish a fragrance before bringing in a new one. You can also use the tray as a monthly tray like what you want to use up, use for the season/month etc. I also love layering and wearing 2-3 fragrances a day, one out the shower or for the day time, one for bed time, etc. That's how they get used up!!

We wear perfume the same way. I love the experience. Sometimes I wish I could wear them only for myself because I know that some of the ones I love, my husband and kids are not fans of and are not generally likeable when I’m out and about. I love when I am home alone so I can wear whatever I like without worrying about others. I also change my fragrance a few times a day so it’s actually better when a fragrance doesn’t last too long. I love changing it up.

I love white florals and white florals with cinnamon or spice and aldehydes, lemon mint etc in spring summer! Dacob knows my fav Fall/winter scent!
The perfume world GOT me during pandemic! And I was busy spending money on new things ignoring my signatures that I know I love!!
The other day I sprayed my favorite since I was 17…and after two years APART?
I fell in love all over again! Literally gave away sooo many new ones and now it’s just my top ten!! M
I’m so happy and NOT anxious keeping up with the Jonses!!
I’ll allow myself to sample travel sizes and buy one two perfumes per year IF I fall in love otherwise no!! 💕

I read Marie Kondo's book and she talks about this exact process. It's really helpful to see what you love and to discover that some of us have a shopping addiction (I do) and also to give things away that I never even wore or used. It really makes me think before I buy if I actually want something because it makes me happy or am I looking for instant gratification of the purchase. Thanks for the reminder Dacob, I love your videos and how you describe fragrances. It actually makes me appreciate the scents I own.

I can identify all the too well. I went on a perfume, fragrance binge in 2023-24 & slowly gained perspective that I fell “victim” to social media, perfume influencers & over consumption. I now feel more empowered to bypass “influencers’ influence.” Less is more. I’m now purging some of these excessive perfume purchases while reprioritizing my spending habits. I’m still a fragrance enthusiast at heart.

I went to Grasse 3 weeks ago, the capital city of Parfumes in France and I tried a lot of parfumes and bought 9 parfumes, but when I came home I found out it was only one that I liked. Chanel Parfumes are the only parfumes now that I realy like and I have 12 and my goal is to go through and smell all the Chanel Parfumes and buy the ones that I love. I went to the Chanel Boutique in Cannes and I went through all the Chanel Parfumes that they had there. I found 2 new ones that I love right away number 1932 and 1957. I also found many that I have to smell one more time before I decide if i like them enough to buy them, but it's a bit difficult because I have to fly abroad to find a Chanel Boutique. Thank you for your wonderful Chanel. Have you been to the famous Parfume City Grasse in France?💖☀

This is such a very poignant message. I have purchased quite a few beautiful Chanel perfumes this year, having carefully listened to your enchanting reviews . These have included Paris Paris, Comete and No 22. I truly adore them. I have, in the past also gone down the rabbit hole, and it becomes such an unsatisfying experience on so many levels . The quality is lacking in these new releases. Also, I always now check in with myself emotionally, just to see if I really do need that fragrance, or, is it a hug from a loved one, or maybe clarity on a professional issue that may have been troubling me etc . Chanel, Papillon, and also Franchesca Bianchi are ones I will invest in. Also some classics such as Giorgio Beverly Hills, and Elizabeth Arden 5th Avenue, aswell as others you have spoken about are in my collection. I feel what they all have in common is their quality and timeless beauty . I listened to a content creator recently refer to 'a classic' that had only been produced three years ago. Yes. A classic. Of three years of age in perfume years. I had a clutching of pearls moment.

Thank you for this caring message, Dacob.
Recently, I went on a vintage perfume spree. Of course the scarcity factor was a driver. At one point I did an audit and was taken aback about the number of bottles (old and new purchases) in my collection. Crazy to some, modest to others. And thankfully free of any duds.
So whilst I'm not really affected by so called influencers, the latter half of this video really resonated.

I was buying a lot. A LOT. and I reduce my purchases every month to where im down about 90%. It was a fun hobby for a while but I will wait for ones i really like and buy samples. Samples can be just as fun and for 60 or 70 dollars you can get 6-8 samples and a lot of the companies will give you a coupon for that money towards a bottle you like.

If one can not resist FOMO, one should just collect the 2ml samples of the perfumes you desire.
I have no problem resisting FOMO, as I can not be manipulated.
I have started my journey in 2018 (with Lorenzo Villoresi) and I currently have a stable collection of around 25 full bottles, a few decants, and a few dozens of 2ml samples. I buy, if any, one or two bottles a year, only if I find a magical scent ( and I redefine the term 'picky').
For example, in 2024 I only bought Pikovaya Dama. In 2025 I'll get Ambre Narguile, I have a sample of it... no rush to get the full bottle.
Indeed time is the most valueable currency in the world. Quality time. Memories with your loved ones. Time and health. The rest is props.

This is so true especially your take on really getting to know a fragrance before buying the next one. I’m very guilty of this although I’ve long recognized the practice which you described. My latest goal is to declutter the fragrances which are not truly ones I love and to concentrate moving forward on my favorite scent categories - floral woody musky powdery clean leaning scents 😊

Thank you so much for this video. It really helps me a lot to better understand my own behaviour. I tend to buy beautiful things only to keep them in my closet, untouched, instead of wearing them and risking little scratches or emptying the bottles.
I have recently bought a little transparent plastic perfume shelf I just put on my cupboard. You're right! It gives a sense of value to the perfumes I own and it kind of give me a choice every time I pass by it. It's only Chanel perfumes these days as I realise I love the sharpness and classic taste of their smells. Two favorites: n°5 and n°22. But also Cristalle, n°19, Chance, Paris-Paris, n°5 l'eau and eau première and Edt...
I recently felt a urge to buy a few n°22 bottles though, to be sure I always have some, why?

Great points, it's hard sometimes to be sensible with your purchases, we definitely need this reminder! Loved the tip about using loud/obnoxious perfumes as a shield against others, will have to try it out :P .
Side question- I'm currently looking into buying Coromandel, tried the current batch of the edp they had in the store but I kinda felt it lacked maybe a bit of heft so to speak. I asked and they still have the extrait available, however I can't test that one. Would you say is safe to blind buy it, since I already enjoy the edp, in the hopes that the concentration of the extrait will feel richer and provide that heft I'm looking for?

Hi Dacob 👋!! Please continue with this series! I so enjoy it . Dacob, your suggestion of a cabinet is so awesome!! It works like a charm! I have my cabinet with perfumes set up. Now it's in the living room. I enjoy looking at it so much! It's so convenient. When I'm ready to leave the house, the last thing I do is pick out a perfume. Which 9 time out of 10 is Chanel number 5 !! I rarely buy new kinds of perfume . The last time I bought a full sized perfume was Paris Paris ! I still enjoy it . When I do buy, it's a repurchase of my favorites! Or a sample like recently, Chanel Gardenia. It was due to one of your videos! It's so beautiful. Love your outlook on perfumes!! I have a whole new outlook on buying perfumes!! It's all thanks to you, Dacob !!😊 🙏 😘 . I'm a loyal subscriber!! Thank you so much, I've stopped wasting money!! Thanks to you, Dacob !!! Take care!! You are my twin, I’m sure! I too rarely leave the house, only for necessity, my home is my safe space too. And I only wear perfume for myself. Love Chanel too, my favourite, along with Guerlain. And I adore vintage Poison, which I’ve hoarded greedily. 😏 (my personal shield! 💜🙅🏻‍♀️)
From one introverted highly sensitive person to another, from across the miles in Australia. Warmest wishes & hugs to you! ☺️🤗✨🇦🇺 p.s. With all that said now, I still want Cométe! 😂😇 pps - Ok, Cométe ordered….✅

I think I’ve got enough fragrance for the rest of my life (+more in storage). Still, gotta find some old stock No19 Perfume/EDP/EDT . The old stock is not as sweet.

Very true about buying fragrances and also about FOMO. I am going to receive a sample shortly from my Chanel SA of Bel Respiro, ( because of your wonderful video review of it)before I decide to get Comete. ( also like Beige and 1957) . I am also going to receive a sample of the new men's Allure Home Superlegerra. IF I love it, my significant other agreed to use it - he does not normally wear fragrance.

Fragrances, indeed, are music and as most of my life is music, I also love fragrances. And it’s all about that ding and less about the dong! 😂
I stopped buying fragrances about two years ago when I realised that I oversaturated my life, my thoughts etc. and will never be able to try everything that fragrance houses throw at me. I’ve got a personal connection to certain notes that connect me with my past and tried to find the perfect fragrance until I realised that I already own it (and it was the second fragrance with that note I had bought). So let’s say yes to no!

Perfect. We are starting to finally realize that we already had in our hands the best of the best. It was always there…

Hi Dacob, I genuinely think that everyone should watch this video! The perfume world on social medias right now got as crazy as it did a few years ago, with make up!😮 It seems to be the hottest topic right now for influencers, and it sucks!🤯 Quantity beat quality, I get sick when I see these content creators shining with walls covered by bottles...I find it vulgar in fact!🤔 I heard today that brands like Fendy and Paco Rabanne are launching exclusive collections of perfumes very soon, and I just don't want to know what it's gonna be, or how it's gonna smell!🫣 Most of these LVMH companies know nothing about fragrances, I'm feeling like Baccarat rouge opened the pandora box, like every single brand is trying to get into the super expensive niche squad...🙄 And as you're saying: we got to a place where we even consume people, and this is insane...😢Thank you for always being so honest and transparent about things! Love you 💝💝💝💝💝
