Your conversation about not qualifying for food stamps reminds me about why I bring non-perishable food to those little food cupboards where anyone can pick up what they need. So many people are living on a low income, but don’t quite qualify for food stamps.

I get it. Yes! Right now I’m just paying bills, debt and a little saving. I get my baby girl hair done. Lol mean while I don’t have anything left to get my hair and nails done etc. So with that being said I’m living less in the beauty and area where most women spend a good bit in. Also I have a paid for car and just pay act insurance. Most people have car payments. So my budget may look different because of those two categories. I live only 5 mins from my job so I realize I may spend less than most in gas. Moral of the story. Just cut to the bare minimum where you can. My budget isn’t perfect. I still spend on things sometimes but I have more things down to the lowest I can get them right now. I do need to shop around to see if I can get even lower on my part. I need to pay off my two phones so maybe I could go to mint and have a even cheaper phone bill. Right now I’m paying $113 for two phones. That’s even low to some but I heard I could get it even lower.

    Hey Emily,
SC SAHM of 3 here, I def understand your need to budget. Growing up I had to watch my mom managed and budget as a single parent (me and her, but she has three older kids) on making low income, $13-$15 per hour. I budget as well cus you never know what could happen and you’d want to be prepared. Seeing you, my mom, and many other women do it without help or gov assistance is inspiring and it sucks terribly that given the circumstances bc you work, you make too much to receive assistance but not enough to pay bills, put food on the table, save up for rainy day fund, etc. don’t get me started with inflation-like how do we move forward?! There’s people that have jobs but living in their cars with children that still can’t afford housing and can’t receive assistance bc they make too much. Where does it end?!
I’m a new subbie. I applaud your hardwork and budgeting videos…truth, normalcy, and transparency is what I look for in quality/relatable videos. It’s like a breathe of fresh air❤

people gatekeeping being low income is so childish. youre low income. you are the sole provider for yourself and your teenage child. income scaling isnt just about the hourly wage, especially in the current age of inflation. and deflation is no where in sight either. imagine actually walking around thinking the only way you can call yourself low income is if you cant buy food. thats unbelievable. minimum wage isnt even anywhere close to livable either. if you double or even triple federal minimum wage, its still not a livable wage. its like if you eat anything but wet corn meal and sleep, people feel the need to say youre not poor. but imagine if you werent buying food properly and keeping the both of you fed. theyd misconstrue that too

I haven't been on a vacation since 1988. It's the food and lodging that destroys vacation money. If you pack a cooler with snacks/food/drinks, stay in an inexpensive motel/hotel or air bnb, you should be able to make it work on a small budget which will be exciting. Just keep doing what you are doing. I started with Ramsey and still do his system 85% of the time and it has worked well. I'm certainly not rich, but I have made it through a pandemic and higher inflation with little worry and manage to save a little money every year. Having a cushion is key to life's mishaps. You have a good system. The only thing I would recommend would be to take the school budget and divide it by 12 and save that amount monthly so it doesn't hit you all at once. Even if it is only putting away $5/mo. The goal is to knock out all these little expenses that creep up on you every year, but I know you understand that because you are crushing it.

I’m on Soc/Sec and Disability plus work p/t at a fast food restaurant with a total monthly income of about $1400. I definitely consider myself low-income because my rent, water and internet takes up half my pay not leaving a whole lot left for incidentals. I am a single 65 year old female.

Are you saving for the future? You didn't mention an IRA, 401k/457b, HSA, etc.
I highly recommend saving for the future. If you can only put 5% (the minimum for my 457b is $12.50) a pay period, it's better than 0%.
I've seen low income people leave the workforce as millionaires. It's not about how much you make, but what you do with it.

Some channels I follow have terrible problems with their comment section. One man with a finance and investment channel is constantly badgered about his personal life, how much money he has, whether or not he has a girlfriend, and if he does have one where is she, and whether or not he's gay. One Japanese couple had to shut down and go offline for several weeks because the verbal abuse got so bad and their channel is nothing but their life as a married couple. Jordan the Lion does travel videos and as soon as his new girlfriend appeared on his channel the death threats started coming in and they ended up having to contact the FBI. One woman is a prepper and she's received death threats, threats to take advantage of her [ if you get my drift,] and she's had men who watch her channel show up at her door and try to force their way in. She has no idea how they found out where she lives. Channels dealing with politics and religion have problems because those are touchy subjects and they generate a lot of anger but why threaten and aggravate people with family-friendly channels who talk about finances, travel, and household tips.
