    Im honestly extremely suprised it's taken this challenge this long to show up at a games done quick. Its incredibly awesome that a new audience gets to have exposure to such a momentus project 9 years after it first went viral. Its been a pleasure watching this challenge progress over the years and for anyone wants to see more, i highly recommend watching Bismuth's several part documentary on the topic

      My instinct is to make a joke, but I know you've heard them all a million times already lol. Crazy it's been 9 years, I remember forcing my friends to watch that video in college and back then that was considered to be a movie in length by RUclips standards. I still occasionally tell my gf that I'm gonna misalign her QPU as a joking threat lol.

    It's interesting that some of the stars chosen for this showcase are more recent developments which are not in Bismuth's 5 hour video on ABC History:
    1. Watch For Rolling Rocks: used to be infamous "12 hours of building speed to Parallel Universes with 0.5xA press", then cut down to ~2 hours if I remember correctly, until the 0xA strats with that DDR pad was found.
    2. Elevator Tour in the Volcano: used to be ~25 hours (!!) strat, now just ONE MINUTE! I didn't know of this improvement until now because the one minute strats is not posted in Uncommentated Pannen's channel, it's in Marbler's channel instead lol
    3. Treasure of the Ocean Cave: used to be 1xA, now 0.5xA.
    4. Go to Town for Red Coins: In Bismuth's video it was explained that initially it took ~14 hours to bring it from (8xA to 0xA (the biggest improvement, ever)). Then the overflow strats to bring it down to ~2 hours. Then, apparently, this one shown here is not included in Bismuth's video (I suppose because this star already 0xA, and the Elevator Tour star is more important to explain).

    • @lemon9bug
      @lemon9bug 23 дня назад +16

      Indeed, all the TASes showcased here are quite recent developments;
      - for LLL Elevator Tour, the idea to use Hyperspeed Lava Boosting to get to the star without PU movement was actually thought of by ds273 before even the 25hr strat (ruclips.net/video/hghunpG1wYc/видео.html). Tyler Kehne had the idea of using the crusher platform for squish cancel instead of the elevator, and it was eventually Marbler who put everything together into an impressively fast TAS, made possible too by his idea of using the pole for speed redirection. The devil is in the details, as the execution of the strat is incredibly precise in a way that is difficult to convey without going into deep detail, which is why it took so long to be done.
      - for WDW Red Coins, it wasn't any new big tricks but rather a combination of very clever strats & outside-the-box thinking by Iwer Sonsch that allowed a new 14-min route (ruclips.net/video/QHqgy6EwBCA/видео.html , that video description has more details), and I believe it was pannen who figured out skeeter manipulation for it. And the next iteration over that, with some more clever and tricky optimizations let them get it down to 5min (ruclips.net/video/25G6qXpXwHw/видео.html); which Marbler was eventually able to optimize to under 4min for this showcase.

    A lot of comments are saying "What's TAS" or "Nobody's Playing" so let me just leave it in a comment here instead of a reply
    TAS stands for "Tool-Assisted Speedrun". It's generally used to create the hypothetical "best" run where everything is done perfectly. It's created by using a program to make a series of inputs that are created by someone ahead of time going frame by frame and using savestates.
    The A-Button Challenge (ABC) in particular is FULL of tricks that are just too difficult for a human to do, as a lot of them require an absurdly precise series of inputs as well as access to information you wouldn't normally be able to see while playing the game.
    TLDR: TAS is a premade series of inputs created to make a "perfect run"

    • @xenophanes2807
      @xenophanes2807 25 дней назад +36

      To add to this, the category specifically is an individual level (IL) showcase. The run as a whole isn't a category that anyone cares about (it's just getting 8 random stars that aren't themselves very fast), but ILs in particular are very popular and contested. Also the castle movement isn't really a part of the showcase, and that's why the a button is used in between levels. I think what's interesting about tas runs at live events is that you're actually watching world record runs, which (usually) can't be said for most of the event.

    • @satibel
      @satibel 19 дней назад +3

      also clarification on the half A press is that you can enter the level with the A button held so if you absolutely need to jump somewhere else you can chain levels with A held.
      basically half A press means either pressing and being able to hold the button or needing the button held.

    • @Rain0T
      @Rain0T 25 дней назад +110

      calling it a half-press is to denote that in single-star segments it requires an a-press, but in the full game run you continue holding A from a previous press, and therefore it does not require an additional press. single-star segments just exist to show off, what actually matters is the full-game run

      that was just a dive recover, done with the B button and performed after pretty much every dive in this run; it’s also the most height Mario can get on his own with no outside help. it looks like it’s going backwards here because Mario was on a slope, which gave him negative speed, but the dive recover still functioned like normal despite the negative speed.
      edit: nevermind i lied, that wasn’t technically a dive recover because Mario wasn’t in the dive action, he was in the backwards sliding action which shares the same animation. the recovery from this functions almost exactly the same as from a standard dive recover, though, and also can be done with the B button and doesn’t require A.
