PORTO COVO - VILA NOVA de MILFONTES (21,5 Kms)
The Trilho dos Pescadores captivates us in this first stage full of sights at every step. Capricious cliffs, succulent sandbanks, hypnotic breakers, extensive dune systems, storks nesting in impossible places and all of this accompanied by the floral explosion of spring.
We begin the day from the Ponta da Gaivota, in Porto Covo, a broken ledge from which small and succulent sandbanks emerge that we can see from the heights.
The road to the south brings us closer to Ilha do Pessegueiro, flanking first the port of Porto Covo and then the beaches of Engardaceira and do Sissal.
Once at Praia da Ilha do Pessegueiro we observe the Roman ruins of its islet as we advance along the shore until we reach the Forte de Nossa Senhora da Queimada, from the 16th century.
Then the route increases in height until we reach Praia dos Aivados, which we enjoy until the boulders begin to dominate the terrain.
Subsequently, the signs direct us through the interior of the Malhao Dunar System along stretches of sand to then connect with wooden walkways from which we can view its spectacular beaches.
From here the most generous sandy beaches end and small coves nestled in vertiginous cliffs begin to intersperse.
After surrounding the Ponta do Ladoiro and Ponta da Galhofa ledges we began to see the roofs of Vila Nova de Millfontes, a place we entered dotted by cereal fields.
They had told us about it but we can now begin to say that this route is a spectacle 😍😍😍
