So if you are born into a poor family, there is literrally a whole society that tries to keep you in that caste. The lowest of the castes are like lepers and rat catchers, they are commonly referred to as untouchables, since no one above them in the system want's to even touch them. This is a quickly written explanation, as I didn't have time to read up on the issue, this is what I can remember from documentaries about the sgubject, that I have seen.
