This is actually really interesting. When I was in Japan for a week I ate soooo much food and lost weight. Here in Germany, with the amount I ate, I would’ve gained. I was so surprised by that
It's the same here in Australia, at my old school we made a two course meal for lunch once a week and learnt about nutrition and and table manners at the same time. I went to Japan on vacation expecting to gain weight, but ended up losing it. It's a combination of generally healthier food, and more activity that burns calories. If I wanted to go somewhere, it's either walking or taking the public transport. You're standing for a very long time and there's not as many places to sit down I've noticed. Very interesting to see how all these factors come together!

N. Novak not in everything, and even so there may not be a lot in it depending on the food your thinking of. Saying that japan puts soy sauce in everything would be like saying America has grease on everything which isn’t the case for either country... that would be disgusting tbh 😂
I went to Japan recently for a couple weeks and was honestly expecting to put on a bit of weight because I wanted to eat a LOT of food while I was there. I did eat heaps of food no desserts but I ended up losing weight from walking so much lol! Of course the ordinary person in Japan wouldn’t be walking as much as I did on that trip, but jeez were there a lot of stairs!
same....i was in Japan three weeks ago....ate a fair amount lost 3 lbs in 11 days...now only need 7 more to hit ideal weight for me! I did walk 12-15K steps daily
So this video in a nutshell is saying that the reason why it's easier to stay thin in Japan is because the Japanese culture puts more emphasis on healthy food even if it's fast. Access to healthy food is just as easy and cost effective as fast food

in America we have student debt from lunches that consist of frozen pizza, tater tots, and rotten lettuce if we are lucky. that's why I always skip lunch lol
I’m a Japanese girl 😉☘️After I left Japan, I’ve definitely gained weight... I miss Japanese food style... Too much sugar and fattening make my face rounded as literally RICE BOLL.
The difference is simple. Japanese food's ethos comes from its ancient culture which included healthier habits of eating fish. American food's ethos comes from industrialization which encourages processed food to gain profits.
Makes zero sense. Much of Japanese foodstuffs requires processing and have resulted in industrialization. Their fishing industry is one of the largest and most profitable in the world. The difference is which industry wields more power. In Japan, it’s fishing, so they eat more fish and aqua produce, processed or otherwise. In america it’s grain, so they eat more flour and put high fructose corn syrup in everything.
@@hellosammy4105 Did you miss the part where I mentioned "Ethos"? Japan is highly industrialized as well but the food preference and taste comes from their culture. Fishing naturally happens to be healthier than processed flour and corn syrup, what's your point?
@@videoloops1 the point is that you first define "ancient culture" and "industrial" types of food as opposites. Then get a reply saying that "ancient culture" is in fact "industrial" in terms of processing and profits as well. Like the video said, if you are low on time and spend most of the time working, you are going to reach for convenient foods more often. And the thing is, in the US, healthy food is harder to find and more expensive. An an example, all my local stores have instant flavored sugar-packed oatmeal but when I asked for unsweetened rolled oats I found out it was only available online. :/ I wish there was a variety of cheap and convenient health food options in the US like there is in Japan. Even when I am buying tea, I'm rarely able to find the unsweetened kind.

A lot of Asians and Europeans are actually the “normal” size a human being should be, not thin. Americans are simply too big. Yes, poverty is related to the social obesity increasing but some people are just ignorant and having soda and chips with every meal. Bradley Goo exactly and since corn holds no health benefits it just makes you fat. They feed corn to animals on farms so they become larger. And almost every food product in the US has some type of Corn Product.
I worked at a convenience store when I was younger but was determined to eat better. It was rather hard as quick grabs on the way to work limited me to fruit, salad.... and maybe the occasional chicken sandwich which was even healthy as compared to some fish. More options would help. US food is packed with unnecessary calories, Japanese fast food is usually more like home made foods. lowering the calories. a Egg has 70 calories while in the US most ppl eat carbs with sugar for breakfest which is what like 300 calories
Monsanto corn is an issue, it's basically frankencorn with little to no nutritional value compared to the original. Mesoamericans have been eating corn far longer than people of Europeans descent and other races, when a specific type of natural corn is processed a certain way it releases nutrients making it a great food source.
I am Japanese. Many Japanese people find that foreign sweets and drinks are too sweet and cause a heavy stomach. It feels even more bulky. After all, I think the sugar content and amount of food is the most important cause.
I'm from Germany and honestly I can relate. If you just compare German and Japanese Baumkuchen for example, ours are a lot heavier, because they often contain marzipan and are covered in chocolate. I love both, but I can only handle a small piece of German Baumkuchen to have had enough cake for the rest of the year lol

@2freeIvX Aldi and Walmart gave healthy family sized oven meals that cook in 30-45 min and also offer a variety of healthy foods at affordable prices. If you shop right at these stores you spend less than eating out
I think something that’s important to point out is that in Japan, children are fed proper meals at school and are not given “junk” and unhealthy food choices as opposed to the American schools. So by doing that, eating a proper meal is ingrained into their system from a very young age which they continue into adulthood.
now that I think about it, this is very accurate. schools offer pizza, hamburgers, and French fries for lunch usually. and hospitals, the place where its supposed to be healthy, have the same stuff pretty much. its like were trained to eat and love fast food. really bizarre
@@vinucherayil7166 I remember being taught about food portions (like the pie chart with fruits, veggies, grains, and meat) My home economics teacher, Mrs. Jones challenged the students to take a photo or draw a picture of our lunch. Didn’t Mrs Obama try to improve the school lunches and then some parents got all huffy about it as if “how dare you encourage healthy eating and if my child gets fat because of the fatty foods and the fatty foods I buy for them then oh well”. I can’t imagine not wanting a child to have access to better meals. Most of said huffy parents made this into a political stance instead of trying to combat childhood obesity which makes it more likely for adult obesity. And the fact that junk/fast foods is cheap and organic/healthier choices cost an arm in comparison.
I lost about 8kg in my first month in Tokyo. That's slowed down ofc, but for me it's two reasons, portion size and walking. Even if you're ordering junk food, meals for one person are smaller for what you pay; I never feel overstuffed. The cheapest and most practical way to get anywhere in Tokyo is walking and you walk a surprising amount when you have a couple of transfers between train lines and to and from stations.
Yeah, I can’t speak for Japan but I know in China people use less cars (bc less parking spaces I think, and other reasons) and tend to ride buses or trains more, or walk, ride bikes, ride motorbikes? (Depending on whether it’s urban or suburban) instead
Having a vehicle is very costly it seems so people take public transportation everyday or walk or have bicycles. And public transportations are never late!!
Lived there six months, lost 20+ pounds. I'd put it up to a combination of more exercise (you walk everywhere) healthier food and a lack of corn syrup in damn near everything. Seriously there is way, way too much sugar in every thing in the US.
The issue with corn syrup is the fault of health food fads to begin with. First they demanded everything be low fat, then low sodium. Well there go two of your most abundant sources of flavor, so what do they do? Start pumping in the sugar. After a while it became such a cheap food additive everyone was using it in everything. It's like how everyone complains that McDonald's isn't healthy, so they offer salads and fool around with the menu to try to lure you in but it never does and meanwhile where are all the 'health concious' types? Stuffing their faces with five guys and acting like anything there is better/healthier than McDonald's.

Many Japanese people like tea, seafood, and soybean foods (tofu and edamame), and this is one of the factors that contributes to a healthy diet. It is also worth noting that Japanese supermarkets discount sashimi and sushi to half price near closing time. Since raw fish must be sold on the same day, this is done every day, so even the poor can eat fish.
Furthermore, when meat is used in Japanese home cooking, it is often cut into small pieces or thinly sliced, which contributes to a healthy diet. Meat dishes are often not prepared with meat alone. Meat and vegetables are cooked together. Therefore, even with meat dishes, I often eat the same amount of vegetables as the meat, or even more. Moreover, since the cooking method often involves baking or boiling, there are many cases where large amounts of fat are not used.

Yes, poverty is related to the social obesity increasing but some people are just ignorant and having soda and chips with every meal. Not a single person would be able to stay thin with that kind of diet.
AMEN.
I stayed thin, and I was happy until I went to the doctor and my blood pressure is up, and I'm low on vitamins. Some of us are lucky enough to have a high metabolism, but it turns out you still need to eat healthy to stay healthy. I wish we had more healthy food accessible in the US, then you wouldn't need to have a high metabolism to stay slim, and we'd have proper nutrition.
@@jheanelltabana8713 metabolism is a very minor factor. CICO is the key. Also exercise daily and you'll never be fat.
I'm kinda chubby and I don't eat fast food or really eat that much at all and work out everyday. I don't understand why I'm not a skinny legend 😭
Amen JJ K u are spot on the same with Australians, you don't see nearly as many normal sized Aussies these days either. My eldest grandaughter was a slender baby just like her mum and they were worried about her weight at the maternal health center I told her they are just used to seeing fat babies cos it's pretty much the norm these days, anyway they kept doing it again so she stopped going
My little cousin who lives in Japan was so surprised at how big soda cups are at McDonald’s in America that he took one home to show his friends back in Japan.
wow
Same im from England and our large cup is your small
If I were them I would be done the same thing
Next time show them that the contents of a small cup will fill a large one too. It's America in a nut shell, or soda cup, if you prefer.
@@worldwidedrill7711 then why is ur obesity rate the same as ours was in 2008
It's real food the Japanese eat, what we eat here in the states is literally all corn based food "things"
Bradley Goo exactly and since corn holds no health benefits it just makes you fat. They feed corn to animals on farms so they become larger. And almost every food product in the US has some type of Corn Product.
And soy.
I worked at a convenience store when I was younger but was determined to eat better. It was rather hard as quick grabs on the way to work limited me to fruit, salad.... and maybe the occasional chicken sandwich which was even healthy as compared to some fish. More options would help. Americans were like any other human we eat whats available.
Yes, I am a Chinese, now studying in UK, and I find some food is too sweet.
I want to go to Japan JUST for the food. Everything else is an added bonus.
Why?
Same though and the cats...

It’s like “healthy” is an alternative lifestyle based on the way food is advertised and available in North America :(
I know! My family eats health food (except for a few treats once In a while 😉) and my friends are always surprised like “oh wow y’all eat so healthy lol, I would miss junk food. I could never!” I’m just like 🤷♀️
right? its become a marketing strategy.
Yup at am/pm I spend about $12 on a Bagel Oj & a bottled water
@@laneyhesse8102 after a while, you start craving healthy food instead of junk when hungry
Maybe
now that I think about it, this is very accurate. schools offer pizza, hamburgers, and French fries for lunch usually. and hospitals, the place where its supposed to be healthy, have the same stuff pretty much. its like were trained to eat and love fast food. really bizarre
@@vinucherayil7166 I remember being taught about food portions (like the pie chart with fruits, veggies, grains, and meat) My home economics teacher, Mrs. Jones challenged the students to take a photo or draw a picture of our lunch. The next day everybody showed pictures of pizza and Doritos. She complained about the lack of variety, this kid named Logan said 'the oil was dripping off of the pizza. If I put that down as a drink, can I get extra credit?
@@kennedyjojackson1202 Yeah .We were also taught that chart . But I guess these are things that everyone learns but no one follows.
Japanese people don't drive everywhere... Americans drive just to get to a Costco or a store 1 mile away
Japanese walk.
Metro and subway exist as well 🤦🏻♂️
They use the trains and there are so many stairs there
Yeah, I can’t speak for Japan but I know in China people use less cars (bc less parking spaces I think, and other reasons) and tend to ride buses or trains more, or walk, ride bikes, ride motorbikes? (Depending on whether it’s urban or suburban) instead
Having a vehicle is very costly it seems so people take public transportation everyday or walk or have bicycles. And public transportations are never late!!
Lived there six months, lost 20+ pounds. I'd put it up to a combination of more exercise (you walk everywhere) healthier food and a lack of corn syrup in damn near everything. Seriously there is way, way too much sugar in every thing in the US.
Or you know just have one of those insanely fast metabolisms that hate you increasing weight and get called anorexic all the time :)
tbh
The issue with corn syrup is the fault of health food fads to begin with. First they demanded everything be low fat, then low sodium. Well there go two of your most abundant sources of flavor, so what do they do? Start pumping in the sugar. After a while it became such a cheap food additive everyone was using it in everything.
It's like how everyone complains that McDonald's isn't healthy, so they offer salads and fool around with the menu to try to lure you in but it never does and meanwhile where are all the 'health concious' types? Stuffing their faces with five guys and acting like anything there is better/healthier than McDonald's.
Shannon Warner It’s ironic that you say no corn syrup when it was the Japanese that invented it.
@Manny Q given your title, what do you suggest people do that have hit a weight loss plateau? I've lost a great deal of weight and have hit a plateau recently.
When I went to Japan I visited a temple with a lot of stairs to get to the top, it was endless; I was so tired and about to give up when an old lady with her spine completely bend was still going and wasn't even sweating. I felt so embarrassed with myself so I pretended that I wasn't dying inside and I kept going for my pride.

In brazil is also quite hard making healthy choices when you're eating out. We have a looot to learn from japanese people.
Absolutamente.
But flavour wise? I just can't :')
My sister studied abroad in Japan for a year and lost 30lbs. Sadly, when she returned home she gained it all back. She misses the food in Japan, the food isn't the same in America. On top of the food she walked a lot more because she felt more safe walking to the store, restaurants and to school and she said she can't do that where we live because it isn't safe especially for a young woman.
where do you live?
Same as China and South Korea, there’s still many people walking around even at night if you live in a big city and it’s very safe. Young people go out until late night and many restaurants are open late.
What about the trains? 😏
@@icommentjojoreferences5704 The train doesn't go everywhere. It still requires more walking when compared to taking the car. Actually, many Americans in the U.S. cities walk a lot.
