As an interpreter/translator let me say- 2 hours to translate a full video script from Japanese to English is pretty good, nice job!! It's clear from your finished videos that you're not just translating word for word, and you're also not just jumping on the very first translation you come up with. You're sifting through multiple options and variations of words and expressions, and coming up with the most natural and conversational way of expressing what you want to say in English. If you keep going about it as diligently as you are, I think you can safely stop worrying about whether you'll make yourself understood. Great stuff! If I ate 2050calories in a day I'd be fat. I have to stick to 1200calories and do aerobic exercise (jogging and biking) in order to stay a decent shape. Last winter because of COVID-19, I didn't go to the gym all winter and my calories eaten/day crept up to 1500. Consequently I gained 10lbs! I'm 5'4" which would be slightly tall for a Japanese woman. Genetics is definitely at play here! That said, pretty sure many Americans regularly eat more than 2050calories per day. Bottom line - don't make excuses, but also don't beat yourself up if you can't "eat like a Japanese woman" and lose weight.

When I visited Japan, I opted to eat what was advertised as the traditional Japanese breakfast: small piece of fish, small bowl of rice, miso soup, and a couple varieties of vegetables (usually fermented). Since I'm not Japanese, I don't know for sure if this is what's common for breakfast in Japan, but it was wonderful! I felt full and energized, allowing me to walk and tour Japan's gardens and temples the entire day without finding the need to snack - and I was in my second trimester of pregnancy! It's been more than a year since that trip, but I have incorporated fish and fermented foods into my breakfast. At times I try to recreate what I had in its entirety, because I do think that the combo of fermented foods, high quality protein, veggies, and small portion of carbs is great for consistent energy levels throughout the day.

here in the UK (and many Western countries) we often have unhealthy breakfasts, overly sweet cereals which just give you a temporary sugar high or too much starchy white bread or even both - I struggle to imagine eating rice or vegetables for breakfast as its such a strange concept for me at the present time, but I can see that it is much healthier and probably offers a slow release of nutrition and energy instead of the sugar high and resulting sugar crash later in the morning which is not good - I also have the bad habit of snacking on sweet and unhealthy foods, which give a brief burst of sugary energy and then yet another sugar crash - it's no wonder people can have mood swings during the day! - it's so hard to beat the sugar cravings also

I have English heritage so I understand the difficulties changing the cultural norms around breakie. When I first started I switched to wholemeal bread for toast and had had one slice with banana and honey/jam. Warmed berries and a drop of yoghet on wholemeal toast. Instead of the sugary cereal I switched to heating fruits like apple and pear in honey in a pot adding 1/2 a serve of oats and strewing that till cooked. Then started getting creative with the non sweat breakfast, like focusing on one element of a big breakfast to put it on a smaller scale.

I am so happy I have discovered you. My health has sadly deteriorated in the last 18 months and my diet needs a huge change. I find English diet recipes so bland and boring that I just lost my desire to cook. I have since been experimenting with Asian food after discovering Liziqi, Penji and Hamzy. Kimchi and anything with Gochojang soybean paste is just delicious. I have been researching Japanese breakfasts as I can’t stomach cereals, breads and sugar anymore. I am slowly building up confidence to make a traditional Japanese breakfast of rice, salmon or egg roll, miso soup and pickled veg but I am worried I’ll get the miso soup wrong. There is so much to remember. Lid on. Miso last. Dashi. I adore your culture and your food and even though it’s just for me and my family to eat, I feel I must do it justice. Your English is wonderful and this video was great. Well done. Thank you for sharing. X

I was eating 1200 calories a day while exercising back in august for 5 months (im 5'2) but i was eating anything as long as it was in budget, i lost some weight but it wasnt alot and it was very slow. Now im not counting calories but i eat mostly vegetables/grains/fruit/tofu sometimes chicken and fish, im very strict on reading labels to make sure theres no added sugar, i also cut out dairy almost completely except a small amount of greek gogurt this week to make a labneh dip, doing the same exercises as i was before im losing weight much faster. I noticed in alot of japanese food theres rarely cheese or dairy, i think dairy and sugar are the biggest culptits for americans being obese. I used to believe all calories were equal, but from my own experience I can now say they are definatley not equal.

It's good to remember though that Asian people, especially in Japan, naturally don't make as much insulin as Caucasian people so they arn't able to store as much fat as we do. Which is a big reason they are generally slim, though it does mean they are more at risk for diabetes at a much lower weight. Keep it up! But remember that they can generally eat more than us.

Remember not all calories are the same. In the US we have the problem that most everything we buy in the supermarket is processed or at least the ingredients are. Even the bread is processed and highly refined. The ingredients like lab made sugars and refined oils count as processed and that is what makes people obese. Not the calories.
Of course add that all the sugar and carbohydrates and that combination is what makes an American look the way we do now. We are distinctly American now, highly recognizable when we go overseas from the distance. 😉

In the japanese kitchen some dishes are heavily seasoned because they are supposed to be eaten along with rice which balances the flavour.
Without rice or other bland foil these dishes might become too strong tasting. So for japanese low carbers and japanese diabetics it's popular to replace rice with a bland tasting food that can be a "carrier type food" for these other dishes. In Japanese low-carb circles, the most popular bland rice replacement food is plain tofu.
Other low carb items popular in japan are shirataki noodles, konnyaku and okara.
Another option is looking at it from the positive point of view. As long as you eat carbs in moderation you can have them. Some other people can't even have them in moderation.

Just made the avocado tuna bowl for my breakfast/lunch, and it was delicious over the rice. I didn't have celery, so added diced red onion, and green onions. Topped it over cooled microwaveable jasmine rice cup. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing your lifestyle.
I'm older woman, so cannot eat as many calories as you because I have certain limitations as to how much exercise I can do. If I stay around 1300 I will maintain my weight but ideally I shoot for around 1200. It's not easy though. Your videos inspire me to try new ways and to do better.❤

I am American and I always struggle with my weight and being healthy. I wonder how Japanese do it but now I see it's the food and lifestyle. We have been raised to eat larger portions and more fattening greasy foods. We don't spend a lot of time cooking like this, and our culture seems more focused around spending our time with work, kids, and even being lazy and watching tv in our down time. Our lifestyle and the way our cities are, do not allow for us to be very active. We commute to work in cars or taxis, with very little walking. It seems as though we need to adopt the Japanese lifestyle and diet. Thank you for an insight into your lifestyle! I love Japanese food already, at least the Japanese food I can get in my city, and now I need to learn how to make it.

As someone who lives in Japan - this is not a “normal” diet of most people here in Japan. Sure some people eat this way, but the amount of processed food here is insane. It’s the same anywhere you go. You just need to eat clean and portion control.

@@lovelonelinesss convenience store food isn’t healthy and any Japanese girl that wants to stay slim or lose weight first thing they do is stop eating conbini food because it has lots of crap in it, even the innocent looking bentos if you look at the ingredient list. I love tuna rice in the morning!! It’s so filling and a good breakfast that’s not heavy but will sustain you for hours. I might have to try with avacado because yours looked so good. Usually, I just mix my nori into brown rice & a handful of salad, and then top the tuna with corn or tomatoes. Actually, pairing it with miso soup sounds even better after watching your video, so I think I’m gonna do that 😂
