When Charlie said his friends wouldn't get it because "they're not gay"- it made a lot of sense to me. Because Charlie KNOWS that the way Ben treats him has to do with his own insecurities about being gay. And the conversation can't be as simple as "Tell Ben to stop treating you that way" because in order for Ben to fully treat Charlie like a boyfriend (not just an object for experimentation) he has to be okay with being gay, okay with being singular among his peers, and okay with eventually not being able to hide it anymore. Someone who is straight and/or doesn’t have to deal with this amount of nuance would have a hard time giving advice and empathizing with the situation. One of my favorite quotes from Trixie Mattel- "Being gay isn’t hard. Straight people make being gay hard." (straight meaning heteronormative society, not just any ONE straight person)
great point, I think the best way to maybe get a straight person to understand it, would be to compare it to someone who dates someone on the downlow cause they are embarrassed by them for whatever reason, its not exactly the same, but probably as close as you can get.

love this show and love that your reacting to this , as a brit who has watched a lot of US tv i had to look up how US schooling terms translated to what we use here so i thought it would be useful Year 10: Similar to ninth grade in the US Year 11: Similar to tenth grade in the US Year 12: Similar to eleventh grade in the US Year 13: Similar to twelfth grade in the US Form is like homeroom from the US but ours can sometimes be aged mixed at some schools mixing kids from all years and 6th form also know as year 12 and 13 age 16-18 is basically held at your current school or can be across a couple of schools to maybe better fit what you studying
As an American (correct me if I’m wrong), I’d also like to add college is used as a school specifically for sixth form. So when someone applies to a college later, it just means they’re switching to a specialty school for the last couple years of we’d call high school.
@@hollyh1023 its sort of like that , like you can just do sixth form at your current school , sixth form is what you study in to get your A levels which all university's require for you to get in ( i assume uni is you version of college ) but you also need a curtain level of GCSE ( your high school diploma google told me ) to even be able to qualify to do A levels . where as our college is more for people who didn't necessarily get those GCSE results or just didn't want to do A levels and most of our college courses are more trade based like pluming farming building and so on obviously there are higher level courses to but they basically set you up to go straight into work at 18 , for example with me I wanted to be a chef and I knew doing A levels wouldn't really help me as i had not intention of going to uni so I went to college instead and then started in a kitchen at 17

Though I would imagine it’s not used so much in texts between Nick and his rugby mates, who are a bit emotionally repressed and inclined towards toxic masculinity. Heartstopper was the first professional gig for Joe and Yaz, both of whom come from working class backgrounds and neither of whom had any onscreen experience before. I believe Heartstopper was even Joe’s first ever professional audition. The show does a great job making the case for open casting calls, I think apart from Kit Connor who plays Nick and Sebastian Croft who plays Ben (both were established child actors), most of the young cast had little to no professional experience going into season 1.

I think I watched this season at least 3 times the month after it came out. It just has this unique quality to it that is so warm, and I can't really pinpoint another show that's in the same vein.
I think your comment about being efficient is really a observation that could be made about the whole series. There are episodes later that pack so much in a short time without feeling rushed.

Heartstopper was published online as a Webcomic, later being published physically, then finally getting adapted into a show. The comic is still ongoing online and is currently on what would be the final book. Super happy to see you reacting to this! I found the comic during covid in my senior year of HS, so these characters have a very special place in my heart!
Oh I am so excited to watch this series with you, I know you’ll appreciate this heartwarming (and often bittersweet) story. I wish I had this when I was a teenager, which just makes me so happy it exists for young people now ☺️
This show picks up speed and is very fast paced. It’s got a lot of plot it packs in in only 8 episodes of 25 minutes each without credits. It’s only 4 hours a season, 12 hours for the whole show. I’m not entirely sure from your editing, but it looked like you didn’t pause the show whenever you commented during the show. Heartstopper fans in general are used to reactors pausing to comment, we REALLY don’t want you missing motivation and plot points. There’s visual colour symbolism that starts saturating the show too. Hopefully we leave you to pick the two different types up until after ep4, when both types of visual symbolism have gotten obvious. I’m looking forward to you really getting captured. You’ve noticed the cinematography. It and the writing, acting, soundtrack, direction, everything is top notch. A lot of people are deceived by the happiness we feel that this isn’t one of the best series ever made, especially Season 1. We’ve been trained to think that sadness or anger is mandatory for good art or literature, and that happy art is trashy or lowbrow. I can’t really get into why the script in S1 is so exceptional without spoilers. Just looking forward to you getting surprised and emotional.
This series is based on a graphic novel series of books created and written by the same person who is both the show runner and main writer for the TV series. Each season matures and deepens characters and situations in a thoughtful way you don't see with other shows involving teenagers.
I sound like a broken record at this point, but this show was what I wish I had when I was their age. It is so heartwarming, and tackles so many things without the trauma shock like the shows I grew up on. For example, Queer as Folk, which iykyk. I just enjoy it for the representations it gives, the knowledge it provides, and the love it spreads. Each episode was just a reminder of what the world would look like if we all lead with more acceptance, compassion, and empathy. I’m so glad you’re now part of the heartstopper crew. 🥰

Yes!! I only recently discovered this show, but I've already watched all 3 seasons a gazillion times already, as well as downloaded the soundtracks (such amazing music!). Cannot wait to see you react to this!!
I’d like to point out, specifically in the first season, that the music really ties into the scenes. Listen to the words of Don’t Delete the Kisses, by Wolf Alice at the end during the texting scene. As you get into the next couple episodes there is a tie in. Also, watch for the little graphics (all from the graphic novels) when Nick turns to look out the car window and he has that slight smile. Two seagulls are flying away with each other. Again, that ties in to a future episode. The whole first season has those clues. If you haven’t read the graphic novels just beware the story lines are not all a bed of roses. But as Alice has done so creatively through her storytelling there isn’t unnecessary drama for drama sake but to move the character development forward. I love this series and how intertwined the dialogue, scenes, and music choices all work together to move the story forward. Ugh!!!! So good.
OMG i’ve recommended heartstopper aaaaaaaaages ago, but never really thought you would actually react to it. i’m so happy right now to watch it together with you! it’s my favorite show and it’s really good in terms of different queer representation ❤
As a member of the lgbt queer community myself, I can tell you that the most satisfying, and frankly important aspects of this show, and it's phenomenal success is the fact it gives representation to our community, and all the different facets of everyone on the entire sexuality spectrum. The world can be a tough, and unforgiving place, yes even cruel at times. So, the more we can show those who are uncomfortable with us, that we are also similar in so many other ways, that we are humans too, and that people aren't just their sexuality or gender, and that no one should be judgemental, but instead compassionate, and understanding, if not accepting which of course is what we really want, I have put myself in precarious social situations by so many times telling those who are not kind, that I DO NOT want special rights, I want EQUAL rights, and to be allowed to pursue love, and life just like everyone else. I see other have commented this but yeah, this is an adaptation of a web comic turned graphic novel series by Alice Oseman. The graphics, animation, comic-like editing you see is from the graphic novels. Alice was a writer behind the show, thankfully, so the series stays very true to the graphic novels - just gets filled in somewhat. I recently binged the books then all three seasons and I am absolutely in love with this story! It really takes you on an emotional journey. It's not just all warm cozy feelings, there's a lot of depth and mental health aspects to it.

The ‘x’ isn’t necessarily flirtatious in the UK. We use it frequently with friends, especially close friends. Another way of reading that scene is that Charlie is showing he views Nick as a friend which Nick feels happy about (maybe more happy than he’d normally expect).

Ahh Heartstopper. An eye opener for positive LGBTQ+ representation. Still remembering myself on the morning of April 22nd, 2022, lying sick in bed with Covid and reading online that a queer themed graphic novel got adapted and will be released on Netflix in half an hour. Four hours and eight episodes later I still had covid, but mentally I was on cloud nine. And started my second viewing. Enjoy this little not so little show my friend 😊

I sound like a broken record at this point, but this show was what I wish I had when I was their age. It is so heartwarming, and tackles so many things without the trauma shock like the shows I grew up on. For example, Queer as Folk, which iykyk. I just enjoy it for the representations it gives, the knowledge it provides, and the love it spreads. Each episode was just a reminder of what the world would look like if we all lead with more acceptance, compassion, and empathy. I’m so glad you’re now part of the heartstopper crew. 🥰

Yes!! I only recently discovered this show, but I've already watched all 3 seasons a gazillion times already, as well as downloaded the soundtracks (such amazing music!). Cannot wait to see you react to this!!
I’d like to point out, specifically in the first season, that the music really ties into the scenes. Listen to the words of Don’t Delete the Kisses, by Wolf Alice at the end during the texting scene. As you get into the next couple episodes there is a tie in. Also, watch for the little graphics (all from the graphic novels) when Nick turns to look out the car window and he has that slight smile. Two seagulls are flying away with each other.
Again, that ties in to a future episode.
The whole first season has those clues.
If you haven’t read the graphic novels just beware the story lines are not all a bed of roses.
But as Alice has done so creatively through her storytelling there isn’t unnecessary drama for drama sake but to move the character development forward.
I love this series and how intertwined the dialogue, scenes, and music choices all work together to move the story forward.

OMG i’ve recommended heartstopper aaaaaaaaages ago, but never really thought you would actually react to it. i’m so happy right now to watch it together with you! it’s my favorite show and it’s really good in terms of different queer representation ❤
As a member of the lgbt queer community myself, I can tell you that the most satisfying, and frankly important aspects of this show, and it's phenomenal success is the fact it gives representation to our community, and all the different facets of everyone on the entire sexuality spectrum. The world can be a tough, and unforgiving place, yes even cruel at times. So, the more we can show those who are uncomfortable with us, that we are also similar in so many other ways, that we are humans too, and that people aren't just their sexuality or gender, and that no one should be judgemental, but instead compassionate, and understanding, if not accepting which of course is what we really want, I have put myself in precarious social situations by so many times telling those who are not kind, that I DO NOT want special rights, I want EQUAL rights, and to be allowed to pursue love, and life just like everyone else. Everyone has a story, and feelings. It is so much more "human" to be inclusive, and accepting of others. Brian (Louisville, KY 2/4/2025)

I see other have commented this but yeah, this is an adaptation of a web comic turned graphic novel series by Alice Oseman. The graphics, animation, comic-like editing you see is from the graphic novels. Alice was a writer behind the show, thankfully, so the series stays very true to the graphic novels - just gets filled in somewhat.
I recently binged the books then all three seasons and I am absolutely in love with this story! It really takes you on an emotional journey. It's not just all warm cozy feelings, there's a lot of depth and mental health aspects to it.

The ‘x’ isn’t necessarily flirtatious in the UK. We use it frequently with friends, especially close friends. Another way of reading that scene is that Charlie is showing he views Nick as a friend which Nick feels happy about (maybe more happy than he’d normally expect).

Ahh Heartstopper. An eye opener for positive LGBTQ+ representation.
Still remembering myself on the morning of April 22nd, 2022, lying sick in bed with Covid and reading online that a queer themed graphic novel got adapted and will be released on Netflix in half an hour.
Four hours and eight episodes later I still had covid, but mentally I was on cloud nine. And started my second viewing.

It's not the same though. Most straight people don't have to hide their relationships or worry about being bullied for being in them. Allies can of course sympathize but they'll never know what it's actually like. 7:52
