You can't beat Defying Gravity. It is one of the most iconic songs in all of musical theatre, not even modern musicals. I am so excited y'all watched it! My favorite of your reactions are when you watch stereotypically feminine or child-marketed films. It's such a blast!
glinda was actually the only one mourning the “wicked” but can’t do it openly as seen on the subtle expression of sadness on her face and she was trying to get the munchkins to sympathize with elphaba.
I’m not sure why so many people feel the need to point this out to reactors. To me it’s a spoiler. Yes, it’s obvious when you know the whole story, but they don’t. Let it be open to interpretation while they’re experiencing it for the first time.
doesnt deserve an oscar nomination tho...it was either bought or it was just because this movie was so hyped...yes her portrayal was good but not mind blowing , Dune got absolutely robbed aswell but thats another topic
What's interesting to me is everyone was skeptical of the legit turn of heart Glinda had the whole movie when she's just naturally a flawed character and a bit self-centered. I think it's a perfect depiction of redemption that doesn't fully remove a character's flaws. But she did actually care for Elphaba even when choosing to stay complacent with the wizard. You can see the grief in her at the opening number and the bittersweetness of their departure at the end.
I think they really can't see subtlety or degrees in characters. And they always try to out-guess the plots and view everything through their initial impressions. Don't get me wrong, I love their reactions, but they do tend to have a simplistic Black hat vs White hat overall view of the world.
I have to say, I believed the turn. While she was unlikeable, you could tell it wasn't malice but just pure nativity and obliviousness to her own actions and words, thinking she's in the right because everyone praised everything she did. But for her to go against the flow and dance with Elpheba, I bought it.
But she IS weak, which is somehow dangerous in its own way. She would rather turn a blind eye to injustice to keep her comfortable place and be liked. I believe she genuinely loved Elphaba but she liked being popular more.
@@jaimicottrill2831but she doesn’t have any real power - being a popular girl and being able to influence others’ opinion (like how in What Is This Feeling, she influenced the whole school to feel bad for her and hate Elphaba) is her power - which makes sense why she stays, not that she’s intentionally ignoring what’s happening/only wants to be popular at the end
I was expecting a "There's our guy!" when Fiyero appeared and then realized I don't think they've watched Bridgerton on here yet! When I saw it in theaters I said "That's my Viscount!!!"
My exposure to Johnathan Bailey is Final Fantasy XIV as one of my fave characters, G'raha Tia. Hearing the voice of my fave shy, nerdy catboy being flirty and such gave me whiplash, lol
Glinda makes a genuine turnaround at the Ozdust when she realizes that Elphaba isn't stealing her dreams, just that they share a dream. You can see her being genuinely happy for her friend, even as Elphie gets everything she always wanted for herself. At the end a big part of Glinda's motive is keeping her best friend (and herself) alive. We've seen so many superhero movies that we don't register how insane Elphaba's plan is, she's going to take on a dictator and entire *devoted* nation alone. Glinda is trying to diffuse and placate to keep them alive, that's also why you get a line like "maybe you're not as powerful as you think you are", that wasn't malice it was fear and concern. Glinda thinks she can make a change working within the system. And her power has always been "popular" (that whole song, as fun as it is, is also her philosophy on life - and if you think about how important image is in Oz and how much differences are punished you can see why she'd be so scared of not fitting in), if she went with Elphaba now she'd be a sidekick separated from her own power, what she stands to do as "Glinda the Good" is greater, but her strength is also her greatest weakness and she'll have to retain some sense of self and not get lost in her obsession with approval (being controlled by people she idolized her whole life), so Act 2 will tell whether she is able to do that. Elphaba will have to retain her sense of self while living as the most powerful and hated person in all of Oz, that can swallow a person too.
They really didn't get Glinda at all. Kind of a shame. And they totally blew by the importance of "Popular." The power of having the public on your side can go way beyond superficial popularity. Those who go against the populace can end up canceled or even dead, especially when crossing an extremely popular leader who controls the hearts and minds of the crowd for his own enrichment. Glinda understands this.
@@johnmoreland6089 Absolutely. I feel like when the Wizard revealed he had "no real power" to Elphaba, all he revealed to Glinda was that he's incredibly dangerous. Because she recognizes the power of public opinion, it's the highest power in many ways from her perspective. "Celebrated heads of state or especially great communicators, did they have brains or knowledge, don't make me laugh, they were popular! It's all about popular... So it's very shrewd to be very very popular..."
So I only know Chenoweth from "Pushing Daisies" (highly recommended, by the way), but I knew she had a history on Broadway, so I figured it might be a reference to the stage musical.
Glinda is actually mourning Elphaba in the first song, she's just pretending not to. She looks devastated, her words are "the wicked die alone" and "she died alone."
Except Elphie doesn't "die alone". Dorothy (who committed the involuntary witch double-murder [flattening Nessa with her house & melting Elphie with a bucket of water]), Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsman, The Cowardly Lion (the cub freed from the cage by Fiyero & Elphie), Chistery (in the 1939 movie, he was called Nikko in the closing credits & he's called Truckle in the 1990 cartoon animated by DiC Entertainment) and the Winkie guards were all present for Elphie's death scene. So, when Glinda sings, "The Wicked's lives are lonely" & "The Wicked die alone", she was referring to herself (because although original OZ literary lore has Glinda the Good catered to by what amounts to as "a harem of the most beautiful women in all of OZ" [those not named Princess OZma, Dorothy Gale, or any other prominent female OZian character of major significance], _Wicked_ has her playing dual roles as the one person mourning Elphie's death -- aside from The Wizard once he realized he did have a child [beyond what goes down in part 2, there was also the obvious use of Jeff Goldblum's voice over during the affair alluded to at the start of the film's flashback & The Wizard's own desire to be a father per the song "A Sentimental Man", which are both foreshadowing his paternal link to the main character] & Dorothy Gale [who was only really going to Kiamo Ko to get forgiveness from Elphie for Nessa's death via falling farmhouse rather than The Wizard's directive to have public enemy number one permanently dealt with, at least in _Wicked_ context] -- meanwhile simultaneously having to play up her civic role as a public figure ["Glinda the Good" unfairly pitted against "The Wicked Witch of the West", which is made all the worse when you throw Winkie prince Fiyero into the mix, too, nevermind the toxic relationship Boq & Nessa have that leads to the latter becoming "The Wicked Witch of the East"]).
Can we give The Answer an Oscar for best poker face in a reaction, please? That took fantastic restraint to not leak spoilers by even a flicker of expression 👏
It was tough. When I saw the musical at the PAC in Appleton I was at 1st like what is my wife dragging me to. Lol. But it was amazing! The singing. The dancing. The story. The songs themselves were amazing. I cried at the end with defy gravity😊
The massive cape is a callback to the stage musical where the hydraulic lift positioned behind the curtain to lift the actress playing Elphaba caused her to look as if she was wearing the entire curtain as a cape by the end of the song.
Indeed. I just watched "The Ballad Of Jane Doe" from a musical called "Ride the Cyclone: The Musical" about a bunch of choir kids who die on a roller coaster.
Shoutout to answer’s wife for taking him to all these stage musicals and movie musicals! I love seeing answer love them and 9 times out of 10 I always feel like his wife was behind it! And of course we love answer and his investment and passion
Kristin Chenoweth has said that the higher Glinda sings the more she’s lying. So when you watch the opening song with that in mind you get a very different impression . Would love to see you guys react to some pro-shot stage musicals! Come From Away would be a great one, or Newsies.
No Oak. Musicals are usually not aimed for families they are for for older audiences. Dozens of them deal with death, love conflicts, murder, complex plots etc.
Sometimes, it’s easier to write off musicals as children stuff. The songs are intended to be catchy and stay in your head. And people downplay that sort of power. A musical’s use of metaphor is meant to convey deep meanings. But, nowadays, critical thinking of music and its theory are so often overlooked. 😢
So many misunderstand Glinda's character. Her motivation during Defying Gravity isn't to hurt Elphaba or her cause, it's to save them. "I hope you're happy now you've hurt your cause forever". She understands how power works, that's the point of the song Popular. She wanted to work within the system, to manipulate the public towards her side, as she did with the student populace. If she had gone with Elphaba, she would have lost the only power she has. She doesn’t have actual magical power like Elphaba, all she has is her social power. Is she silly and ignorant and spoiled? Yes. But she has a good heart and she wants to help.
It’s also seen in Popular. It's all about popular It's not about aptitude It's the way you're viewed So it's very shrewd to be Very very popular Like me! She might be “ditzy blonde” but she understands how the public views you and where power resides is important. She knows that she could make a bigger impact on the inside than being cast out. AND she wants to keep her best friend safe.
1:02:27 Funny enough Cynthia said that playing Elphaba wasn’t vocally difficult for her(she did learn a different technique so she could sing while doing her stunts though!) bc she played Celie in The Color Purple on Broadway and that role requires insane vocal control due to the songs jumping bewtween registers while Elphaba’s role has pretty straightforward notes, the difficulty comes from the belts.
@@jaimicottrill2831 As an American, most of us say it the correct way. The way you're hearing it in films is mostly a slang thing and we know it's improper grammar, but some of us just don't really care and say it the other way.
It’s not black and white. You can’t honestly say that Glinda in the beginning is the same Glinda at the end. There’s was definitely character development and although she’s not fully there yet, she was on her way. Rewatch the first scene in Munchkinland and pay close attention to her emotion now that you know what actually happened.
I went into the movie with no prior knowledge of the plot, having only heard a couple of glee covers and all I knew about their relationship was that some people ship them. So maybe that was enough knowledge that I paid more attention to her physiognomy in those beginning scenes than if I went in 💯 blind, but with that said I also get very overwhelmed in theaters due to all the sensory overload, and yet even with all my copious issues I caught it. Though, I should also say I did watch all of Victorious and Sam & Cat, so I guess I'm already familiar with Ariana's facial expressions due to a lot of previous exposure to her acting. Either way, I definitely think she did a great job! 😊❤🙏🏻💕🥰
@@October_JennJennWhich is what makes it effective imo. You see it if you know, but if you don’t, you’re just as fooled as the general public, which is what Glinda needed to happen.
It makes me so sad when everyone just HATES Glinda, she’s obviously a flawed character, but she has many layers and is someone who acts on her insecurities. She wants to be “good”, and seen as “good” but does it in a people pleasing way. She had a genuine turnaround at the ozdust ball. I suggest you guys look deeper into why she didn’t leave with Elphie at the end, it’s much deeper than it seems.
i was super mad cause i was also the only one singing at mine at the beginning and thankfully by the end at least half the people had joined but yeah definitely was disappointed especially seeing the tiktoks people shared of the singalongs in the big cities like New York haha
@@RockyDaTherapist a lot of the shows were sold out. Some people probably went and didn’t even realize or just too what they could. And they could have thought they were gonna sing but just wanted to hear the movie.
27:07 The mini musical in the Emerald City is not in the original musical. The other songs all are (and no songs were cut). Some minor changes to the songs in a few places (and the story is longer/more fleshed out), but they were VERY faithful
FOR ME, this film was the best of 2024. It was pure emotion because I waited years for the adaptation in theaters, and Ariana and Cynthia were made for these roles.
💯. The acting was amazing. You felt the pain in Ariana's eyes during NOMTW. The singing was live and also amazing. Set design, costume design, Cynthia going full-on P!nk singing Defying Gravity while flying. I saw the stage production of Wicked and didn't understand the hype/didn't fully take it in. This movie made me finally "get it." It deserves all the awards.
I almost had to be helped out of the theater at the end because I was crying so hard I was unable to walk. And I’m not embarrassed one bit about that. Such a great movie
Oak: Pretty dark for a musical, isn’t it? Me: He hasn’t seen many musicals, has he 😅😂 Musical theatre is ALWAYS deceptively dark lol. I remember texting a friend ten minutes into a different show(movie version) saying “grandma’s not making it through this”. She’d already seen it but asked why I thought that. Simple answer: “Because the biggest rule on Broadway is that We Can’t Have Nice Things (Unless They’re Going to Emotionally Devastate Us)”
Yea but they say that they don’t have much knowledge when it comes to musicals so I understand why they don’t know it’s hard to find a musical without something dark within the musical plot
It's the classic "Act 2" conundrum. As best seen in Into the Woods. Act 1 ends with "Ever After," where everyone's got their happy ending, then in Act 2 the consequences hit and the f around of FAFO comes to town. The cast gets cut in half and everyone is left grieving, wishing they hadn't had to have lost to have learned.
Until this movie, I completely forgot Ariana could actually act. I forgot she was in the Nickelodeon show Victorious and some Broadway shows. Absolute QUEEN! 💜
You guys caught the amazing cameos by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, but one that some people miss is the blink and you'll miss it cameo. The man who says "The Wizard will see you now!" at the end of One Short Day is none other than Stephen Schwartz, the lyricist and composer who wrote Wicked.
Winnie Holzman, who wrote the saccharine bittersweet musical's book-to-screenplay adaptation of Gregory Mcguire's saucy adult novel, also appears as the Ozian who says, "He can read it! He must be....a Wizard!" after Oscar Diggs does a smoke and mirrors magic act and says his Nebraska hometown of Omaha repeatedly to make it seems as if he could read the magical tome (even though he never could).
The only thing that could have made me love this reaction more is if they did a skit at the beginning where they recreated “YOU’RE GONNA LOOK AT ME AND TELL ME THAT I’M WRONG?! SHE HAD A CROWN AND CAME DOWN IN A BUBBLE DOUG, GROW UP!”
Except the ignorant person who started that argument erroneously confused Glinda the Good Witch of the North (Is she a princess? No, that would be Princess Ozma, who reclaims her family's seat of power on the throne of The Emerald City in a later OZ book.) with The Wicked Witch of the East (Elphaba's younger, disabled sister [Nessarose in _Wicked_ continuity] who gets crushed underfoot by Dorothy's farmhouse after it lands on her head after dislodging from the disipating cyclone summoned out of thin air by weather sorceress Madame Morrible as a means to lure fugitive Elphie out of hiding by forcing her to have to show up in order to grieve for her dead sister & subsequently angrily catfight with Glinda over the filched magicked footwear that rightfully legally belonged to Elphie as Nessa's next of kin & also over which of them Winkie prince Fiyero loves best, although the second of those things is rather trivial & pointless compared to the first reason).
Their reaction feels like something was missing kinda meh. ReelRejects Wicked reaction was great, they got all the references and meanings. This kinda fell short on me :(
There is a deleted scene where Glinda tells elphaba that she would have helped with the cub if she had wanted and Elphie tells her she will never leave her behind again. I feel like it gives so much more feeling when she doesn’t go with her at the end. Also when she tells her to come with to emerald city. I wish they had kept that in.
It’s very sweet but it also speaks to Glinda’s lack of character, Elphie knows it’s wrong and wats to make a difference, Gilinda wants to do it if she feels it’s what others expect or want from her, example her changing her name in hour of the goat prof
Just gonna throw it out there, you guys have to add Bridgerton to your watchlist. NEED to see you all react to season 2 now that you've experienced Jonathan as Fiyero.
And they sang live as well. Cynthia did her own stunts, and she was singing with a harness and hooked to a contraption to help her fly while singing defying gravity. She had to be taught breath placement while she was doing the stunts so that she was still able to sing.
Just to clarify, Wicked was based on book. The books was actually fanfic of the Wizard of Oz, the movie version, not the books version, because the storyline completely different than Wizard of Oz book.
@7CrystalSnow L. Frank Baum wrote a 14 book Oz series in the early 1900s. In 1939 they adapted book one of series into what we now know as The Wizard of Oz movie with Judy Garland but the story was altered dramatically from the original book. Then in 1995 Gregory Maguire wrote a fan fiction novel of the 1939 movie and the book series and named it Wicked. This book tells a very dark version of the life of the wicked witch of the West Elphaba told from her point of view. Then in 2003 the book Wicked was adapted into the Broadway show we know now. So there are vastly different stories depending on the source matter.
I really love the scene when they're about to board the train because there you can really see how much Glinda just wants to be loved. The whole point of changing her name was because she wanted to be appreciated by the people she cared about (Fiyero and Elphaba), but in the end she was praised by everyone else except by the people whose attention she was trying to gain. Also you should really rewatch the first song and pay close attention to Glinda's expressions, she really had a change of heart after the Ozdust dance scene and she managed to form a genuine friendship with Elphaba and Ariana Grande did a great jod making sure that we can see the pain that Glinda is trying to hide during the whole celebration of Elphaba's death.
Would love to see a Sweeney Todd reaction! I loved doing the play in my town. We made someone in the audience throw up apparently and that made us very proud. Also, Phantom of the Opera is pretty dark too in a different way
@emilymartin5806 nice a fellow thespian, I studied 4 years of acting and theatre then moved on to directing. As you should feel proud that means the assignment was understood lol I would like to see the guys reaction to sweeney as well as the phantom although I wasn't totally sold on Gerard butler as the phantom
There is also an a bit of an easter egg I think someone mentioned that Fiyero does a similar dance with Galinda and the girl in Dancing through life that the Wizard (Oscar) did with Elphaba’s mom. I never noticed some of the similarities between Fiyero and the Wizard.
Im 25 and I have seen Wicked on Broadway 5 times, as have my mom, sister, cousins, aunts a grandmom. Its a bit of a tradition. Its so amazing to get to watch people experience it for the first time
Love how this reframes the simplistic motivations of both Glinda “the good” and the wizard sending an alien tween girl to kill their enemy for them as the entire plot of the original. Also love how no one tends to think about who NessaRose is in context of the original story. She even gets to wear stripy leggings in this as a wink. “WHO KILLED MY SISTER?”
@ I’m not brining up any act 2 “wicked” specific spoilers just things you could deduct if you are overly familiar with an 86 year old culturally iconic movie. There is a difference.
Most people who saw the original movie would've known it was based on books, and the books were actually promoting the silver standard. So there is a ton of depth and meaning, just not the dramatic kind.
i wish you guys would’ve looked a bit deeper into glinda’s character. so many reactors just seem to flat out hate her and never give her a chance beyond that. and i get it to an extent, she’s presented as a privileged mean girl who has never had to work for anything in her life. however, that’s so surface level. ariana grande gives a really nuanced performance here, in my opinion, especially in “no one mourns the wicked.” her facial expressions there speak volumes about the guilt she feels “celebrating” elphaba’s death and putting on this public persona for the munchkins. also her switch during the ozdust ballroom scene is real and genuine. i have no clue how people don’t catch how glinda has developed true feelings for elphaba by that point given how tender that moment is painted to be. and her character continues to grow more because then she has to wage an internal battle with what is easy and will give her the validation she craves (staying with the wizard and madame morrible) versus what is difficult and will ruin her reputation (going with elphaba). all of that to say, elphaba isn’t the only dynamic character in this story. not everyone is black and white morally speaking. perhaps the next film will highlight that more for everyone who discounted glinda’s character. still happy you all watched this and enjoyed it so much!
Regarding the songs: I think they added songs to the second part but in this one, all of the sung songs are from the stage musical. They’re just sometimes longer or slighted changed to fit the movie. I’m so happy you’re already reacting to this. First of all, the singing - lots of it live! Especially Cynthia and Jonathan blew me away. But I was SO very happily surprised by the practical stuff (set design, 9 mio. tulips 😂), the dance and stunt work, and that great balance between childlike wonder, comedy and adventure. Amazing! So much love poured into the making of this movie. Brilliant. Can’t wait for part 2.
Actually, the one song that was not in the theater production was the explanation of the "Absolutely factual story of our Wonderful Wizard of Oz." That song was added to introduce the Grimmerie as the ancient book of spells, and as a way to introduce Kristen and Idina in their cameo appearance. I guess you could actually call that an elongation of "One Short Day," so you are technically correct. There will be two completely new songs in Part 2.
It's not as dark as many other musicals 😄 I would love to see you guys react to *Into The Woods* - imo one of the best (and surprisingly dark) musicals out there. But NOT the Disney movie, they missed the point and message entirely, the og Brodway show with Bernadette Peters; the full show is on RUclips
Fun fact (NOT SPOILERS AFTER PART 1): in no one mourns the wicked (song at the beginning) the munchkins sing “no one mourns the wicked” while Glinda sings “no, ONE mourns the wicked”. Also, Glinda sings in falsetto when she’s not being totally honest with the audience or herself!💓 LOVE THIS SHOW
I have been waiting for you guys to watch this!!! You’re the ones I wanted to see react to it the most out of anyone, knew you’d all love it but also couldn’t wait to hear Oak address all the lessons this story gives us 💕
I do find it interesting how so many people feel the need to assign motivations to Glinda in No One Mourns the Wicked, despite not knowing where the story is going yet
I woke up so sick, and had to call into work, just thinking today would suck and then I saw this. You've turned it all around! So happy to see this reaction finally 😊
the emerald city scene is filled with alumni from both off broadway and broadway wicked alumni- Kristen and idina are the obvious ones but there are a lot more that make up that scene
I was watching the DVD with commentary from Cynthia and Ariana. One thing I thought was so cool was, the shot in the library where the guy flips over the camera? It's a one shot take and he really did all that! Everyone did everything lol but it was just a really cool shot.
I was a Glinda in highschool, people can change, realizing how dumb and harmful bullying is, is the first step to being on the same team. I wish I was nicer. Changed now.
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS REACTION!! And YES Mason, everyone is kinda evil, that's the point. Glinda is a mean girl, Nessa is ashamed/afraid of her sister and never stand up for her, Fiyero pretends to be someone he's not and Bock lied to Nessa so she believe he like her. No one is "good". I love this musical, cried during the whole movie when I saw in the theathers 😂❤
This movie version of Wicked deserved all the hype. I've seen the musical with a friend in 2012 and loved it. I watched the movie with my parents to spread the joy. They thought they could have shot the tulip scenes in the Keukenhof over here. Loved the biking and Fiyero's last name being Tigelaar. It felt like home. Also because of the themes of the musical. Seeing Idina and Kristen again was nice. I schooled my parents with them by watching Glee.
I've seen Wicked twice in theaters and a thousand times on RUclips after I bought it on New Year's Eve. And I cry every single darn time. Poor Answer, trying so hard to keep a poker face and not give anything away. Those of us who know, we see it in your eyes, and we can relate!
Parts 1 and 2 were filmed together. Part 2 is currently in editing and pre-production to get whatever extra effects are needed. From what I understand, the visual effects, in particular the buildings, the landscape, the train to The Emerald City and the wizard's den with the big head were all practical effects. The sets were built in such a way to act as sound stages with microphones planted everywhere and even hidden in the clothing, so the voice parts sung were done live. So loved this film and it was great seeing your reactions. Thanks for sharing.☺
They did multiple takes, including singing takes and choreography takes. That’s why you can see the actors singing in closeups but sometimes not when the camera pulls back, but the songs sound like they were filmed in the space they were in.
I loved seeing this live and the movie didnt let me down. Sooo soo good! So to add, if you go back and watch the start again, you can actually see how upset Glinda is, the acting is so subtle but so beautiful, she was mourning, she wasnt happy. it was just amazing acting
It's worth it to watch the Glinda's opening song again after seeing this half. Ariana actually does a really phenomenal, subtle acting job there. Take a look at how she's reacting to what the Munchkins are saying now knowing the context of their backstor. Obviously, you're still missing part of the story so tbh watching after act 1 is interesting and going back to watch yet again after the whole story is told adds so much flavor and context to it. Props to both Ariana and Cynthia who absolutely crush this in every way. So good.
I'm definitely a Wicked Witch apologist. Think back to Wizard of Oz. What bad did she really do? A kid in a house fell on her sister, then that kid took her mom's shoes from her sister's freshly dead body and refused to give them back. What kind of monster does that? I'd be pissed at that kid, too. For me, Wicked is the real story and Wizard of Oz is the propaganda hahahaha
some movie theaters by me started doing showings that were specifically billed as sing along so if you wanted to let loose in the theater you could. i ended up going with one of my friends who LOVES this musical and I had a great time with her
I haven't seen the musical and didn't have a very optimistic view going into this at the theatre, but I absolutely adored it! It was a wonderful and wicked surprise
In the stage show they use strategic lighting along with a giant cape in order for Elphaba to "fly" in the air over the audience during Defying Gravity. This helps them hide the lift and the mechanics they use to achieve that feat live on stage. They didn't need a big cape on film, but the choice to feature it anyway is a nice homage to the stage show. A few cameos you may have missed aside from Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenowith.... the man at the gate to Oz who says "The Wizard will see you now" is Stephen Swartz. He wrote all the music for Wicked. Miss Coddle is played by Keala Settle, who you may remember as the Bearded Lady from The Greatest Showman. She's also got a long Broadway career and while she never appeared on stage in Wicked, she was originally considered for the role of Miss Morrible, before it ultimately went to someone else. Also - Jonathan Bailey who plays Fiyero nearly wore himself out doing this movie. In addition to filming Wicked he was also filming for the show Bridgerton at the same time AND working on the show Fellow Travelers. That's an insane schedule and somehow in between all of that he still managed to film a cameo in the show Heartstopper too.
The fact that this is the first thing I see when I open RUclips has made me BEYOND ECSTATIC!!! I just finished watching the watch through on someone else’s Patreon and can’t wait to add this one to my rotation of rewatched Wicked reactions I put on for comfort watching!
This was a nice surprise! We are looking forward to Part 2! Which song from the musical is your top play?

If you watch Glinda's (Ari's) face in the beginning? You can see how incredibly sad she is. Especially when she throws the torch.
So many reactors missed that, it's so obvious by Glinda's facial expression that she's putting on a show.
I’m not sure why so many people feel the need to point this out to reactors. To me it’s a spoiler. Yes, it’s obvious when you know the whole story, but they don’t. Let it be open to interpretation while they’re experiencing it for the first time.
she is a traitor
@@jennv2948They already watched Part One which makes it obvious that she would be sad… it’s not a secret and it’s not meant to be.
doesnt deserve an oscar nomination tho...it was either bought or it was just because this movie was so hyped...yes her portrayal was good but not mind blowing , Dune got absolutely robbed aswell but thats another topic
Cynthia Erivo already has an Emmy, Tony and Grammy and has been nominated for an Oscar more than once.
If she wins this year or next, she either becomes the youngest person to EGOT or she ties for the record.
I realized Cynthia was in Pinnochio so it’s good she finally has a relevant role and I must say she’s a PERFECT Elphaba.
@@johnmoreland6089 💯

Yes!!! Glinda is a more complex character once you understand all of this about her. She’s not perfect, but she is a very redeemable character
Its like the Director said, this movie is about choices and the second is about consequences.
I think I have seen this comment on ReelRejects Wicked reaction as well. Lol.
I INTERNALLY SCREAMED when Idina & Kristen showed up in my theater!!!
My theater was silent (thank god)...except everyone collectively scream-whispered "OH MY GOD" when they showed up.
I saw it in an early screening on the 20th in NYC and the entire theater screamed and cheered. Truly surreal experience.
So I only know Chenoweth from "Pushing Daisies" (highly recommended, by the way), but I knew she had a history on Broadway, so I figured it might be a reference to the stage musical.
Oh I definitely outwardly screamed "HOLE-YY SHXT!!"
right😍 smiled from ear to ear
hahaha oak whispering “set it all aflame…. burn it all down……” had me dying

It was tough. When I saw the musical at the PAC in Appleton I was at 1st like what is my wife dragging me to. Lol. But it was amazing! The singing. The dancing. The story. The songs themselves were amazing. I cried at the end with defy gravity😊
Omg yes i was so impressed😂 especially with the comments coming from the other guys and him just trying to Not React
The massive cape is a callback to the stage musical where the hydraulic lift positioned behind the curtain to lift the actress playing Elphaba caused her to look as if she was wearing the entire curtain as a cape by the end of the song.
Musicals can be pretty dark. Les mis and Rent come to mind immediately, both deal with some heavy real life stuff
Exactly. People still think musicals are about tap dancing orphans haha
Indeed. I just watched "The Ballad Of Jane Doe" from a musical called "Ride the Cyclone: The Musical" about a bunch of choir kids who die on a roller coaster.
Miss Saigon, Aida
Sweeney Todd
Spring Awakening ❤
Shoutout to answer’s wife for taking him to all these stage musicals and movie musicals! I love seeing answer love them and 9 times out of 10 I always feel like his wife was behind it! And of course we love answer and his investment and passion
That is very sweet! He actually got teary eyed more than I did during the movie. He is a softie❤ thanks for supporting the channel. It means a lot!
Didn’t they react to Hamilton? You’d think after having watched Hamilton that would be more apparent. 😂
Also didn't they watch A Very Potter Musical, a show where it's got college humor and clearly not family friendly jokes.
War, aids, sexuality, betrayal! Definitely made for adolescents and adults.
how do you think they’d react to the book of mormon or sweeney todd 😭😭
It's all about popular
It's not about aptitude
It's the way you're viewed
So it's very shrewd to be
Very very popular
Like me!
She might be “ditzy blonde” but she understands how the public views you and where power resides is important. She knows that she could make a bigger impact on the inside than being cast out. AND she wants to keep her best friend safe.
Ah I see so many people laughing at Doctor Dillamond's bleat at the end of 'Something Bad', I think a lot of people miss the meaning.
Ikr! Like you JUST heard him saying they're losing the ability to speak
That's the case on stage too.
I’m surprised as well because it’s not even subtle, everything about that scene and the song is telling you directly what’s happening
I appreciate that Quinn got it, though
YES
1:02:27 Funny enough Cynthia said that playing Elphaba wasn’t vocally difficult for her(she did learn a different technique so she could sing while doing her stunts though!) bc she played Celie in The Color Purple on Broadway and that role requires insane vocal control due to the songs jumping bewtween registers while Elphaba’s role has pretty straightforward notes, the difficulty comes from the belts.
Watched this like 5 times and just now realizing the wizard saying “Omaha” when ‘reading’ the grimmerie was a Nebraska reference

IMO, Ari’s acting doesn’t make that very apparent to most people.
THANK YOU! That was one of my biggest hurts that they kept on doing throughout the entirety of the reaction 😢

Oak: Pretty dark for a musical, isn’t it?

Musical theatre is ALWAYS deceptively dark lol. I remember texting a friend ten minutes into a different show(movie version) saying “grandma’s not making it through this”. She’d already seen it but asked why I thought that. Simple answer: “Because the biggest rule on Broadway is that We Can’t Have Nice Things (Unless They’re Going to Emotionally Devastate Us)”
I'm on bated breath for part 2! I can't wait to see the reactions!!!
In the Heights?
Part 2 is a bring a full Box of Tissues time. I won't spoil it, but be advised.

It’s unbelievable that director Jon M Chu was not nominated as best director for this year
I heard that it's a technicality, that he can't be nominated until part 2 comes out.
I love how much Quinn hated everyone in the Ozdust scene 😂 32:20 and around it was amazing
Glinda was actually mourning the wicked witch at the start, the munchkins couldn't sympathize with her
I love the "No one mourns the wicked" line, can also be: "No. One mourns the wicked." Two very different meanings in one line.
Until this movie, I completely forgot Ariana could actually act. I forgot she was in the Nickelodeon show Victorious and some Broadway shows. Absolute QUEEN! 💜
Yeah. She's a theatre kid. She started out acting on stage and television. Music was a great fallback for her when she took a break from acting
I knew her from Sam and Cat, and the Queen has evolved a lot since then, becoming much bigger than that series and Nickelodeon itself.
im so glad musical theatre is getting the budget and attention it deserves
All of Quinn's takes were solid gold, especially hating Boc and refusing to see his "save" as him changing for the better. This was amazing lol.
I've watched a ton of reactors and so many start with that 😂 it's really fun
The cape growing is an homage to the stage musical production where they used the cape to hide the rig as she flew higher up on stage
Omgggg. I’ve been waiting for y’all’s reaction to this soooo bad!!!!

Their reaction feels like something was missing kinda meh. ReelRejects Wicked reaction was great, they got all the references and meanings. This kinda fell short on me :(
Geez, that was one of the BIGGEST misreads of the ballroom scenes 😢
There is a deleted scene where Glinda tells elphaba that she would have helped with the cub if she had wanted and Elphie tells her she will never leave her behind again. I feel like it gives so much more feeling when she doesn’t go with her at the end. Also when she tells her to come with to emerald city. I wish they had kept that in.
It’s very sweet but it also speaks to Glinda’s lack of character, Elphie knows it’s wrong and wats to make a difference, Gilinda wants to do it if she feels it’s what others expect or want from her, example her changing her name in hour of the goat prof

Just to clarify, Wicked was based on book. The books was actually fanfic of the Wizard of Oz, the movie version, not the books version, because the storyline completely different than Wizard of Oz book.
yea.. I read it and I was like... WHAT ?
I loved seeing Ariana in the movies, she was incredible and necessary as Glinda, and Cynthia was perfect for Elphaba, she is a complete artist💚🩷

There is also an a bit of an easter egg I think someone mentioned that Fiyero does a similar dance with Galinda and the girl in Dancing through life that the Wizard (Oscar) did with Elphaba’s mom. I never noticed some of the similarities between Fiyero and the Wizard.

As well as Fiero, who Elphaba tells to "get stuffed" at the end of their first meeting.
@
I’m not brining up any act 2 “wicked” specific spoilers just things you could deduct if you are overly familiar with an 86 year old culturally iconic movie.
I'm so excited to see Jonathan Bailey and Cynthia Erivo sing 'As Long As You're Mine'
Thank you very much for this super! We appreciate it 🙏 and that film is on the list 👍
I find it funny that people are taken aback by the first song every time, even though 'Ding dong the witch is dead' is in The Wizard of Oz.
You’re the ones I wanted to see react to it the most out of anyone, knew you’d all love it but also couldn’t wait to hear Oak address all the lessons this story gives us 💕
24:16 thank you, finally a proper reaction to this line! My entire theater was silent while I belly laughed 😂
Hope you feel better! Stay hydrated ❤
Thank you! Trying too. At least this video will heal my soul haha ❤@tiffany02020
“Aaaaaand 🎶NOBODY in all of Oz..🎵” her voice there, frustration fear and excitement for what’s to happen. 🎵👏🏼BRAVA ELPHABA
the emerald city scene is filled with alumni from both off broadway and broadway wicked alumni- Kristen and idina are the obvious ones but there are a lot more that make up that scene
Plus cameos from the script writer (Holzmann) and composer (Schwartz)!
Funniest thing in this reaction was Oak saying this was a bit dark for a musical 😂 oh buddy you have no idea how tragic most musicals are.
One of the best part of this reaction was Answer trying to keep his poker face XD
All songs were from the broadway play. They just integrated all of them into one scene for the Dancing through life sequence
Everything was live and sung live ❤
Not everything. The main characters sung live, but the ensemble characters were pre-recorded.
@ they were referring to the main characters and so was I hun. Don’t tell me what I already know
Let’s us be glaaad, let us be gratefullll
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS REACTION!!
And YES Mason, everyone is kinda evil, that's the point. Glinda is a mean girl, Nessa is ashamed/afraid of her sister and never stand up for her, Fiyero pretends to be someone he's not and Bock lied to Nessa so she believe he like her.
No one is "good".
I love this musical, cried during the whole movie when I saw in the theathers 😂❤
“A little dark for a musical isn’t it?”
*stares in Les Miserable* 😭
This movie version of Wicked deserved all the hype. I've seen the musical with a friend in 2012 and loved it. I watched the movie with my parents to spread the joy. They thought they could have shot the tulip scenes in the Keukenhof over here. Loved the biking and Fiyero's last name being Tigelaar. It felt like home. Also because of the themes of the musical. Seeing Idina and Kristen again was nice. I schooled my parents with them by watching Glee.
7:15 “Pretty dark for a musical” - Does anyone want to tell him about Sweeney Todd? 😅
Arianna had me cracking up in the theater, I didn't know she was so hilarious! Loved this movie
7:13 how to say you've never been a theatre kid without saying you've never been a theatre kid 😂
everything in this movie is built. even the wizardfs giant mask is a pracitcal effect
some movie theaters by me started doing showings that were specifically billed as sing along so if you wanted to let loose in the theater you could. i ended up going with one of my friends who LOVES this musical and I had a great time with her
I was so scared you guys wouldn't like it, but I the fact that you guys liked/loved it that much?? I didn't expect that. You guys are awesome!
30:53 He's LYING!!!!!😂
About spit my coffee I laughed so hard hahaha he said it with his full chest. Too funny.
The way they’re trying to gaslight him 😂😂
I haven't seen the musical and didn't have a very optimistic view going into this at the theatre, but I absolutely adored it! It was a wonderful and wicked surprise
Love the pun!
@happysigns 😅 I had to throw it in there
@ LOL! It's genius!
Oh man, I clicked so fast! Sooo excited !
I am SO excited to see what you all think of the second part. especially after some of the stuff you guys said!!
not me crying again. man I loved the movie so much, it's an amazing adaptation.
The fact that this is the first thing I see when I open RUclips has made me BEYOND ECSTATIC!!! I just finished watching the watch through on someone else’s Patreon and can’t wait to add this one to my rotation of rewatched Wicked reactions I put on for comfort watching!
