Probably the most moving scene on television for me this year: that pan to Tori on the stairs as Charlie tells his parents about his mental health.
Olivia Coleman was in fact booked and busy so she couldn't be here this season.
They talk about him going to school farther away in this part of the comic but i think they just wanted to end the season on a happy note in case it doesnt get picked up for a 4th season

They didn't talk about Nick's university plans yet because, yes save the drama for next season, but also he still has one more year of high school left. This season he was in what would be considered Junior Year in American high schools, with Charlie being equivalent to a Sophomore.
Imagine my condition watching ‘Heartstopper’ Season 3 and ‘Baby Reindeer’ back to back lmao but I persevered and managed to finish the season within a day.
Nick and Charlie still have another year of high school together, so they have some time to work things out with the long distance plans. In comic, the very next day after the summer fete Nick tells Charlie about Leeds and he’s very supportive. Maybe they wanted to save that conversation for a potential fourth season and end the episode on an unambiguous high. But where things are in the webcomic now (which is still ongoing), Nick is planning to try for Leeds and Charlie’s been helping him with his applications. I think Nick has more hesitation about it and, by the end of this season, is actually struggling with codependency more than Charlie is.
As for your question of whether they “survive forever,” canonically…. (Spoiler)

no but the good thing about being this late is that I'm so not overflowed with this season´s content and I don't feel like I've watched it 5 times in a week (by watching the show and then reactions) so it feels all fresh and it's still so much fun, I love it!

@@demontrash😂 as a Brit I can confirm 4 hours is loooong and our trains are usually hideously expensive (and quite often unreliable) and our petrol is expensive. Destined to thwart many a long distance romance lol .

NOT down with how Charlie treated Tori in the Xmas episode
I really felt for Tory but have every empathy for Charlie. He has only been home for a week or 2 and had had a very stressful day with focus on food and crappy relatives. He did what he needed to go for his own mental health. Just because someone is home it doesn't mean they are well, it just means they don't need 24 hour specialist support anymore.
@charliec4405 I have empathy for Charlie AND he was selfish. He could have invited Tori to go with him from the jump, but wanted Nick to himself. Yes he had had a hard time, AND he should have known from this experience that Tori likely needed him for her own mental health. He didn't even explain or draw a boundary or anything: just "I am out of here.". I love Charlie as a character even more than Nick. This was the one time I was legit upset with him. Even when she begged he just ran.

I just think that's a lot to ask of a 15yr old,with significant mental health problems, freshly discharged from 24 hour support having undergone an acutely stressful day. His focus no doubt would have been on eating/not self harming I suspect he had very little reserves left for being able to consider other peoples feelings in that depth. (Something even adults with good mental health often struggle to do unfortunately!)

He just wanted to escape to a safe place, and if Tori had wanted to leave with him, I’m sure he would have been fine with it? She was just as capable of leaving, and she obviously knew why he was upset, she was there, I don’t think she needed more of an explanation.
I have a lot of empathy for Tori, and I don’t blame her at all, but you could also say it was unfair of her to try guilt Charlie into staying in an environment that didn’t feel safe for him. It irks me that after multiple seasons seeing Charlie setting his mental health and safety aside to accommodate others’ feelings, the second he makes a choice to protect himself fans call him selfish.
@normaladjacent I didn't see it as he trying to guilt Charlie at all, but asking for what she needed. And my meaning of Nick to himself and yours aren't the same. Just meant he wanted to have Nick as his safe place in that moment. Again Charlie was going through a lot and was on his journey. AND we need to learn as we move through our trauma how our traumatized actions can hurt others. His behavior was understandable, relatable, ok... and I still hold that he did something that could harm another. It seemed he learned from that and also learned to not put all his need into one person (Nick), so all good. I think he was selfish, and sometimes we NEED to be selfish. We also need to learn when to focus on our own needs and when to support others. I still would have had a little loving discussion with him when things cooled down about how he shut her out (in a way he didn't want to be shut out himself).
