    This is a great adaptation of Treasure Island IMO, definitely underrated. It's also interesting seeing it from the viewpoint of someone who doesn't know the original 😀

    This movie had a sequel in production (by the same passionate creators) but Disney cancelled it because of this movie not performing well in cinemas. They sadly chose to realease this in cinemas around the same time as the 1st Harry Potter movie I think, which might have taken all the attention away from this movie, which probably made it perform (far) worse than it normally would have.

    • @DarthUmbra
      @DarthUmbra Год назад +24

      Disney deliberately killed this movie. The marketing was bad and they put this between Harry Potter 2 and a James Bond film.

    • @danielwhyatt3278
      @danielwhyatt3278 Год назад +5

      @@DarthUmbraYeah I heard the same thing. Apparently it was mainly because they were trying to transition to 3D animation. Wonder what they thought of that transition now.

    • @a.j.m8264
      @a.j.m8264 Год назад +5

      They purposely sunk it by not giving it any advertising and they knew how it’d perform coming out right after Harry Potter. They could have chosen any other month but they put it RIGHT after that one… it’s a bit too big of a coincidence for most people to ignore. They wanted to shift to 3d animation and with its failure they could point at it and use as example to say,”Hey look, 3d is more profitable than 2d. Let’s just do 3d now.”

      Disney under-promoting this film was definitely a part of it. Treasure Planet was also a very expensive film to make (the most expensive traditionally animated film, with an est. of 140 million dollars in budget), which means it bombing was basically the final nail in the franchise's coffin.

    The area they travel in is called The Etherium (not space as we know it), that's why they can breathe there without spacesuits.

    I love how Jim and Silver help redeem each other while trolling the audience into thinking they are out to get each other until only one of them is left standing. Epic!

  • @derricksteward4483
    @derricksteward4483 Год назад +30

    Fun thing about this movie at the end when you see Jim in the dress uniform it's because in the second movie he was going to go to a prestigious military academy off of a recommendation from Captain Amelia, where he would have went on another space adventure reuniting with Silver, meeting a love interest, and encountering his father. But because the sequel never got green lit we only see this ending.
    Also the reason they can breath they have one line at the beginning where they mention the Etherium which is like a breathable space, space with atmosphere so they have open ships because they will not suffocate so if your not on a planet or a ship with artificial gravity you will just float through it until you die from dehydration or starvation.

    Though it might not be realistic, the universe of Treasure planet is based on an old European idea of what space was like. Many of the the planets and galaxies here exist within something called the Etherium: a stable intergalactic atmosphere that allows for breathing and even intense space weather. And somewhere at the edge of this Etherium is the void that we now see as outer space.

  • @wiseguy01
    @wiseguy01 Год назад +27

    Most people don't realize that this is a Steampunk inspired film and takes many elements from that science fantasy subgenre. Like the reason they can breathe in space is due to the existence of the aether, which is a substance that people used to believe existed in space and worked like oxygen. It is still a common aspect of steampunk, though its function may vary. Just about all of the technology and concepts are rooted pretty firmly in Steampunk, the aesthetic being a mix of retro science fantasy/fiction and the Victorian era. Sad that this film wasn't more popular.

    One of my favorite Disney movies! I watched this over and over again after I got my hands on a home release...I think I have both the DvD and blu-ray copies. In their behind the scenes extras, they said this was the first feature length movie where animation studio integrated 3d graphics onto a 2d character (Silver's mechanical features were 3d). I also loved this movie since it was atypical from the 'Disney' brand and told what I felt was a different story. Atlantis or The Emperor's New Groove next? :D

    This movie resonated alot with early 2000s kids you would be surprised the impact not having a stable father figure in a young boys life can have it's you can see how it effects jim and how Silver takes up the role unintentionally and genuinely cares about him and can see Jims progression with his outfit.
    It everts so many expectations.

  • @OfficialAwkbe
    @OfficialAwkbe Год назад +5

    As a kid, I adored this movie and never really felt like Silver was a bad guy necessarily unlike the bad guys who followed him to Treasure Planet. Silver was definitely a typical pirate desiring treasure, but he also had a big enough heart to take in Jim and give him the father figure he had desperately needed. He managed to take a delinquent with no plan for the future and gave him the push and motivation to strive for being a better man. In the end he made his choice of what type of man he wanted to be, as well. So he's a fantastic choice for a "bad guy" in my book.

    38:54 - I like to think he kept a couple coins/gemstones for himself, one to sell to get him going and one just to keep both as a memento of the adventure and as a last piece of the treasure.
    39:08 - Logically speaking, Flint plundering so many precious metals and gemstones made the tiny bits they *did* get *WAY* more valuable, that's why they were able to rebuild the entire inn with only a handful. Had they brought back all of it, they could've crashed entire planetary economies like Mansa Musa did in Egypt.
    (Though that's pretty much bound to happen anyway since the exploding planet would've launched mountain-sized piles of melted gold across the galaxy that people could stumble upon.)

    This movie was super expensive to make because it was almost entirely made with an animation system known as deep canvas that Disney developed that they still own all rights too that allows for absolutely incredible 3D/2d animation that still hasn’t been replicated by other studios

    Treasure Planet is the most expensive traditionally animated film of all time. From what I've heard, Disney *chose* to barely market the film, which would've had a hand in why it bombed. It's a shame too. Every character (except B.E.N. most of the time) is genuinely enjoyable, and Silver and Jim's father-son relationship is so heartwarming.

    Just so you know...
    Mr. Arrow isn't dead. And won't be, for a VERY VERY long time. It'll be eons before his body is finally torn apart by tidal forces near the event horizon of the black hole. By the time he gets anywhere near dying, time dilation will have slowed him down so much that even a second would be a subjective eternity.
    Ironically, he'll very literally outlive everyone else in the universe. Only to die in the most horrible way possible at the very end.
    Yeah...black holes are bad. Just sayin'.
