What happened to Kyle Rittenhouse and Eli Dickens can happen to any of us. It's what they chose to do in those moments that make them special. They have something rare. It's the thing that nobody could find that day in Uvalde. What IT is exactly, I cannot say, but you can tell when it's lacking, because the outcome is catastrophe.
The "it" you're looking for is COURAGE. And you are right; there was NONE in the almost 400 cops in Uvalde that day. An unarmed mother went in _twice_ to save her kids and saved others too. That's Courage! The sad part is, now those same police are harassing her constantly. I hope she sues them into poverty. These COWARDS deserve it.
It's obvious Eli knew his firearm & how to use it. Just learned who taught Eli how to handle a firearm. It was his Grandfather. My Dad (former Deputy Sheriff) taught his entire family including me his daughter & his grandson how to handle firearms. I also believe "good" was with Eli that day. Eli was at the right place at the right time. If he had stopped for just a few moments, he might not have been at the mall when this happened. "Coincidence is God Incognito". It was smart of your dad to teach his family the safe handling of firearms. When I was in 7th grade my school had an NRA teacher come over and show us gun safety with 22 rifles . we had a four-lane shooting range in our basement Boiler Room and many kids signed up for gun safety classes all should know gun safety.

Given the high rates of gun violence per capita in the South where high rates of carrying citizens are also present, I'm guessing that most don't really care what happens to them in that state of mind.

Skin color is no deterrence, unfortunately, sort of like sock color. Different cultures just tend towards different modes of criminal conduct. Gang violence is much higher in one, other types of mass shootings in others, and then there are the Amish/Mennonite communities where there are virtually none. Obviously those are the ones that need to be learned from, and the causes are once again irrelevant to skin color.
