When I first saw this I wondered then I looked up her birth date, she is 72. I recall seeing her in her 1st really big film back in 1982, "The World According to Garb" and "The Big Chill". The latter was what Cobert talked about the 'crying in the shower scene', for those who haven't watched it.
This woman.. she is a true actor. The craft is something meaningful, it is a bond between the actor and the audience, one life watching the actions of another. Grace and class.
I agree. But, it's worth noting that as humans, we aren't always trying to one-up each-other. In fact, the hilarity that you mention being an attempt to one-up could actually be a nervous reaction or an attempt to be likable.
He has to be not only the best late night host but interviewer I have ever watched. He is literally engaged with his guest and has knowledge about their work. So many late night hosts are just churning through their guest to make the show. He loves what he is doing. Its nice to watch.
I agree hes a good interviewer but when he's not that interested with the guest's story you can almost always tell. I personally think in terms of interviewing Graham Norton is the best. But in terms of American late night its between him, Conan, and Seth Myers.
I went to W&M and was lucky enough to meet Glenn at a masterclass she taught in the theater dept when she came back to visit. Sweetest woman alive. Such an immense talent.
Why the hell this interview doesn't get 15-20million reviews and likes? She is so intelligent and well put together and extremely trained in her craft.Every word that comes out of her mouth is pure magic and a gem. Christ!
Oh my god, it's one of the rare insights in to the nature of a true artist, here on display. Stephen draws it out, so we can appreciate it. You can get all, we can get all silly, gasping over masters of their craft. This is one of those precious moments when our gasps are sincere. And, that's ridiculous, gasps are never sincere, except here. This is a special interview. Hell yes Glenn Close.
Wow, and her adoration of Kate Hep, gave me goosebumps, as my mom looked like Kate most of her life too; equally talented in her own way, but never famous. We miss her so.
Euh! She totally deserves another Tony Award. I was blessed to be able to see her recently in Sunset Blvd and it was the best show I have ever seen. Her performance was incredible. Words cannot describe it.
I love what she said about the energy between an artist and an audience. It is a powerful, intangible and utterly real connection between minds. And it's magical! A beautiful letter from Katherine Hepburn, one great star handing on the baton to another.
Probably one of my first female crushes. Such beauty, such class, such grace. She has a tangible prescience of mind that I can only hope to attain over my years.
I remember seeing Hepburn on Dick Cavett when I was a kid and I was blown away. Truely one of the most inspirational interviews ever, simply because she had such a natural sense of integrity in being fully honest and unguarded in the answers she gave which revealed such a refreshing character. The first person who I ever heard adress the existence of God in fully human terms without hesitation, and without any pretense of offering her apologies for possibly offending the faithful. On that point and everything else she was totally at ease fully expressing herself. She even sat in her chair like she was lounging on the porch. It was wonderful.
Glenn Close is one of those celebrities who is exempt from the "oh they're just actors what do they know" criticism. She is a true artist who has worked tirelessly at her craft for, what, four, five decades? And still going even with all the money in the world. A legend.
An absolute Powerhouse!!! She is always been an ole school phenomenon!! I will never ever forget her in "Dangerous Liaisons" there is this Nobility about her yet she is so down to earth !!!
Who doesn't love Glenn Close? She is simply marvelous in every way. But, as a clothes horse, can I take a quick moment to praise that incredible jacket she is wearing?! Holy hell, it's gorgeous and looks fantastic on her. Sorry for going off topic but it had to be mentioned! :)
I love this woman!! I have not seen her in a movie in a long time and will not be able to see her in the play since I do not live in the US: SAD! I always for some reason had her confused with Meryl Streep. They do have several things in common: they both are excellent actresses with strong academic credentials and they've aged gracefully and beautifully without the use of artifice. All my love and respect to you ladies Xx
I have friends who have seen the London revival last year and friends who are watching this Broadway performance. I wish I had the $$$ to fly from Malaysia to New York, buy an amazing ticket and watch this. Have been listening to her Norma on the soundtrack for years now and it gives me chills every time.
I was lucky enough to see her in the London production four times. She's incredible as Norma Desmond. I even got her autograph at the stage door. I was over the moon.
She is such an actress in every sense of what you'd think an actress would be. Like, she's one of those stereotypical actors that people think about as being deep and thoughtful (although she really is). She actually uses the word, "craft." That's just such an actor thing to say. I mean this all as a compliment, by the way. She's a revelation in all that she touches.
That's not very nice. No need to insult one show in order to praise the other. Jimmy may not be to everyone's taste, but he's a friendly host and doesn't deserve the teasing he gets in these comments... Nobody does.
Debra Hall: I love humor. And maybe the OP was trying to be funny and meant nothing by it, but if you think the comments that followed the OP were mere humor, you are sadly mistaken---it's clear to me they meant what they said about Jimmy---and not in a haha way.
I LOVE GLENN CLOSE ever since I first saw her in Dangerous Liaisons. What a dame, what a class act. I love her story with Katherine Hepburn, my favorite actress from the golden age of Hollywood. Thank you, Stephen Colbert for this wonderful interview. You are the best.
I really love her. She is so gifted. Her performance in Sunset Boulevard is so stunning. Also, her acting in all the movies she participated impressed me. I can’t hate her even sometimes she played a hateable character.
Spectacular interview with one of the greatest actors. Thank god, Colbert conducted himself with some dignity and as a professional interviewer instead of interruptions, tangents, and lame jokes.
I adore her. She's one of the best actresses I've watched in my life. She's amazing, and having seen her live at a conference here in Montevideo and in several interviews, I love how she is outside of whichever character she's killing it as.
I had heard that Glose was a performance to watch for but for all the odd things in life, I had not seen her performances. However, the first thing I saw was the film Dangerous Liaisons, when she played opposite John Malkovich. Both actors played beautifully and their interpretations will resonate for years. But Glenn Close's performance was mesmerizing, she was her part, and against Malkovich completly in his role, playing off of each other as it came from their own puny black hearted characters. Now That is Acting. It burns me up to no end how many actors, women especially, but men, too, had grown too old to practice what they had accomplished to earn their acting chops. 🌻
I worked on a movie with Katherine Hepburn. At the end she gave everybody on the crew a present along with a handwritten thank you note. Class act, like Glenn Close.
I saw her in London and God was she great! That play is a real tour de force and she was brilliant. Can't believe she is 70! We also met her outside after the show and she was super sweet. I'd always had the impression she was tall and regal but she really is tiny so no wonder her legs don't touch the ground in flats ^.^
I love the way she speaks; so gentle and knowing.
Awww, I adore this woman. Her talent as an actress is unlimited. There's NO WAY she is 70 years old.
When I first saw this I wondered then I looked up her birth date, she is 72. I recall seeing her in her 1st really big film back in 1982, "The World According to Garb" and "The Big Chill". The latter was what Cobert talked about the 'crying in the shower scene', for those who haven't watched it.
72 isn’t old.
Yes, she is 72 and it's fabulous.
This woman.. she is a true actor. The craft is something meaningful, it is a bond between the actor and the audience, one life watching the actions of another. Grace and class.
Glenn is pure class.
Glenn Close is a national treasure. She's truly stunning.
An international treasure.
@@zeddeka absolutely 💕👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
What a class act. She is a wonderful actress and seems like a kind soul.
Love the way she speaks. Articulate and gracious
What a beautiful spirit Glenn Close is. Her energy comes right through the whole interview. 💗
God she's beautiful.
Glenn C has allowed herself to age naturally and gracefully.
A beautiful human being in all regards,
Mhi kl well... maybe not completely naturally. just more natural than most actresses.
She is. I can't say I'm a fan of the short hair, though.
She really is
Javin Gibson. BTW!
Such a brilliant and humble woman. I love Stephen's sensitivity here, not trying to one-up her with hilarity. What a great interviewer.
I agree. But, it's worth noting that as humans, we aren't always trying to one-up each-other. In fact, the hilarity that you mention being an attempt to one-up could actually be a nervous reaction or an attempt to be likable.

Jackson Keith Bond compared to his contemporaries I would agree but check out Terri Gross on "Fresh Air" for some amazing interviews.
A true artist.
She's very lucky to be able to have a letter from Kate Hepburn. Glenn is an amazing actress like Kate herself.
what a wonderful interview from such a sensitive and expressive woman
Why the hell this interview doesn't get 15-20million reviews and likes? She is so intelligent and well put together and extremely trained in her craft.Every word that comes out of her mouth is pure magic and a gem. Christ!
I love "damages". Great show. Very underrated.
No small part of that is that Close plays her character with such passion and conviction.
Oh my god, it's one of the rare insights in to the nature of a true artist, here on display. Stephen draws it out, so we can appreciate it. You can get all, we can get all silly, gasping over masters of their craft. This is one of those precious moments when our gasps are sincere. Colbert is the best, his guests are truly open on his show. Elsewhere guests seem "manufactured".
Saw 'Sunset Boulevard' about a month ago. If you're in NYC during it's run do not miss it! Glenn and the entire cast are phenomenal!
I love what she said about the energy between an artist and an audience. It is a powerful, intangible and utterly real connection between minds. And it's magical! A beautiful letter from Katherine Hepburn, one great star handing on the baton to another.
This is the most riveting interview I have seen on Colbert I think. Glenn Close is awesome!
Glenn Close came to my school in 2014, she's a wonderful woman and no matter what she tells u she can still do her Cruella De vil laugh
What a great interview, love Colbert but Glenn is shining here with sincerity
She's so incredibly classy and such a magnificent actor
Probably one of my first female crushes. Such beauty, such class, such grace. She has a tangible prescience of mind that I can only hope to attain over my years.
One of those interviews you can only find on Colbert. Intelligent people just talking about things important to them.
love that laughter and her genuine behavior
I remember seeing Hepburn on Dick Cavett when I was a kid and I was blown away. I went to see her in "Sunset" last week, it's the best show I've ever seen. The 40 piece orchestra is amazing...she is a goddess.
I loved this interview, one of the more thoughtful interactions I've seen on a talk show. Energy fields with the audience!
Glenn Close is one of those celebrities who is exempt from the "oh they're just actors what do they know" criticism. She is a true artist who has worked tirelessly at her craft for, what, four, five decades? And still going even with all the money in the world. A legend.
Glenn is amazing. 5 decades in acting and still going strong.
I just saw her in Sunset Boulevard this weekend. She was truly marvelous!
She’s such a gracious person
Love her. Saw Glenn in here in London in 2017 and she was AMAZING!
Just saw her tonight!! What a privilege to be in the same room as her!
I loved her movie “Paradise Road.” It sticks with me when things get hard.
Her OSCAR is long overdue!
I just love Glenn so much. She's one of my favorite actresses.
What a Treasure she is.
An absolute Powerhouse!!! She is always been an ole school phenomenon!! I will never ever forget her in "Dangerous Liaisons" there is this Nobility about her yet she is so down to earth !!!
I break up everytime I hear someone talking about Katherine Hepburn. She was such a unique angel.
swampwitch5
Glenn rocks everyone's world. And yes my woman, that jacket is the shit.
So nice to see a real face.
Favourite childhood villian
A beautiful and classy woman. Period.
Please give this wonderful actress an oscar.
I love this woman!! I have not seen her in a movie in a long time and will not be able to see her in the play since I do not live in the US: SAD! Give this woman an Academy Award already
Omg. An actual interview on late night TV. Good work, Colbert.
She's so original and talented!!!!
the actress of the century -Glenn Close!
Whenever I watch Fallon and lose some brain cells and IQ points, I always watch Colbert to get them back plus more.
Even his name sounds stupid.
That's not very nice. No need to insult one show in order to praise the other. Jimmy may not be to everyone's taste, but he's a friendly host and doesn't deserve the teasing he gets in these comments... Nobody does.
No not insult, just a fact of life as a talk show host.
I think Jimmy would find it funny. What happened to Your sense of Humor?
Debra Hall: I love humor. And maybe the OP was trying to be funny and meant nothing by it, but if you think the comments that followed the OP were mere humor, you are sadly mistaken---it's clear to me they meant what they said about Jimmy---and not in a haha way.
Then you go to Conan and actually laugh XD XD
that's the way of making an interview! 👌🏼
Terrific. Love it if this had been longer.
Still stunning beautiful!!!! And at 70!!!!!
Katharine Hepburn even had the set furniture rearranged for that interview!
These kind of interviews is why I watch Colbert.
great interview. two incredibly talented people talking about things that are really interesting.
Oh my god!! Glenn Close is so amazingly talented! She really inpires me! I love her!
(I could die to see her performing in Sunset Boulevard)
She was amazing in Dangerous Liaisons. And of course, Cruella de Vil.
What a wonderful woman, that almost just made me tear up 😢😁
I really love her. She is so gifted. Her performance in Sunset Boulevard is so stunning. Also, her acting in all the movies she participated impressed me. I can’t hate her even sometimes she played a hateable character.
Never seen anyone like Her. One minute She looks evil and then next minute like here She looks beautiful.
Amazing actress
Any time I hear "Sunset Boulevard" I think of William Holden and his opening dialogue, as his body floats face down in the pool.
me too
jim ford Awesome film.
jim ford love that movie.
I think of the ending, and that amazing fade to white in closeup.
An actress who should be as famous and iconic as Meryl Streep. Underrated in spite of her fame.
Spectacular interview with one of the greatest actors. Thank god, Colbert conducted himself with some dignity and as a professional interviewer instead of interruptions, tangents, and lame jokes.
What a lovely interview! So insightful
She is so badass! Loved her since 101 Dalmatians and Damages is one of my favorite shows of all time.
I love that physics and neuroscience explanation! So true. Actors shape an audience's perspective and vice versa. Love that!
Greatest actress ever!
Ícone da Arte de Representar. A melhor atriz americana. Até hoje a única que conseguiu me emocionar. 👏👏👏
Honoray Oscar for Glenn, ASAP
Glenn Close is genius actor .
Saw her in London, she was amazing
Wow she Amazing
I adore her. She's one of the best actresses I've watched in my life. She's amazing, and having seen her live at a conference here in Montevideo and in several interviews, I love how she is outside of whichever character she's killing it as.

Jest Pani świetną aktorką i dobrym Człowiekiem.Tak To czuję jak Panią oglądam ❤❤❤❤❤
I Appreciate these wet few big stars that remain committed to their craft like Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Glenn Close
Magical and Magnificent thanks very inspirational
Cant beleive this was just 10mins. Felt like an hour of insight
Who needs an Oscar when you get a personal letter from a 4 time Oscar winner
you're so right! I guess that's the greatest gift you could get from your role model
I worked on a movie with Katherine Hepburn. At the end she gave everybody on the crew a present along with a handwritten thank you note. Class act, like Glenn Close.
wow that was a good interview.
What a legend
Steven u are the best.
i love her !!!! she is one of my favorite actresses next to Meryl Streep.
She is lovely.
She is a fantastic actress, understated and talented.
I want this woman to win an Oscar so bad.
Yes, but get over that. She says here that she doesn't act to get awards.
i want glenn to fill carrie's shoes as leia for episode 9,
she's the only actress who could do carrie the respect and justice that she deserves!
I saw her in London and God was she great! That play is a real tour de force and she was brilliant. Can't believe she is 70! We also met her outside after the show and she was super sweet.
