Why Hurricane Categories Make a Difference

- During a hurricane you usually hear meteorologists refer to its intensity by categories. If you don't know the difference between a category 1 and a category 5 hurricane, The Weather Channel meteorologist Mark Elliot breaks it down for you.

One thing people don't realize is that they're showing the worst case scenario for each category.
I've been in quite a few and I'll say usually they're not as bad as the damage they show but it can be with certain factors
A hurricane is categorized by its strongest 1 minute sustained winds, usually in the upper right quadrant and eye wall. Especially on larger storms, seeing an impact from a major hurricane may not equal major hurricane force winds at your location but it always demands respect.

Richard Hdjdjdjdnnxjd in Miami you will be fine, most of the houses are made to withstand hurricanes. The reason hurricanes are so bad is that they hit where the places are not made to withstand hurricanes. After hurricane Andrew Miami really started to prepare for hurricanes

This dude is a legend! Standing in a category 5 hurricane without any worry... wow, that takes guts brother
A conclusion would be? *DON'T build paper houses.*
IKR.
thats not the purpose of a house
meoirin even in a concrete house you will lose your roof, your windows and door can be blown in which will allow wind inside which will destroy interior walls. This can weaker the structure and the house can still collapse.
Reckk why would you build a light roof on concrete walls? That's nonsense. In the Mexican Caribbean the entire house is built with concrete and stone, and, none of them suffer this damage in a hurricane.
Daniel Josue Balam Ceballos except for the windows, doors and if flooding occurs, the concrete building will be useless.
DynamicUrufu. But people like in my island of Puerto Rico dont build in flooding-proned areas for the most part. Mostly because the Government plans well. Also, most of our windows are made of steel. They are what we call persianas. Those resist a whole lot. I was in PR in 1998 during Georges which was Category 3. We got 120 mph winds and they didnt even flinch.

Florida homes are built to be hurricane resistant. They are built entirely differently from homes elsewhere in the country. The main concern would be flooding about now.
Dude, Florida homes are made out of paper. I live here, I know.
+nataxiah bricks are best.. Im in VA we never have problems during storms
Paper? What part of Florida do you live in? Since Andrew, homes are required to have the first story built entirely from CMU block, with every third cell having rebar through and fastened to the structures foundation and filled with 3000 psi concrete. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Each home is rigorously inspected, and materials used thoroughly tested. I happen to work for an engineering firm that performs these tests. Your statement is ridiculous.
Stu
wreksangel Well that explains why you are so heated up over my comment! lol I exaggerated to get my point across.
