    I feel like this is worst possible scenario for each category because I live in Florida and I’ve experienced cat 1-4 hurricanes. Here’s my experience as well as my friends’ experiences of living through hurricanes for years. From my experience living through each of those for 20 years, a tropical storm does nothing but cause strong winds and power outages. I guess there’s debris if there’s trash on the street but it’s like a bad thunderstorm nothing has ever happened to my house or anyone’s house that I know of (even poorly built) because of a tropical storm. There’s flooding sometimes but it’s in the street mainly and it’s not gonna reach your door or house usually unless they announce that there’s a lot of flooding going on (you’ll know beforehand). Category 1 & Category 2 just cause stronger winds but it’s most likely still not gonna impact your house. Category 3 can actually pick up heavy objects and send them flying around and trees can fall over. Category 4 I actually went outside one time during it and there’s a lot of stuff flying around. Large things flying everywhere. You’re house could be damaged. Category 5...if you stay home good luck. Definitely get the hell out of there I have never been home during a cat 5.

      There has and there was actually a category 7 the only cyclones were, typhoon ida 1958 202 mph winds, typhoon violet 1961 207 mph winds, typhoon Nancy 1961 with 215 mph winds, hurricane Patricia 2015 With 215 mph winds. There are only 4 tropical storms that only reached 200+ mph they are incredibly rare btw this isn’t wind gusts this is sustained winds wind gusts have short periods of above average wind and sustained winds are just average wind.

    Most important stats on hurricanes is the size of the wind field and the intensity of the storm. Unfortunately, most of the time the media does not put this into perspective.
    One of the reasons Katrina was so bad, was the size of the wind field. Hurricane force winds went out over 100 miles if memory serves, and tropical force winds further still. This generates a storm surge over a large region and is hardly surprising.
    These storms are hardly more destructive than they were before "global warming." What has changed is that houses are being built in storm surge prone areas and with the available insurance temps people to build expensive homes in storm surge areas. In the last century people built houses that when they were flooded by storm surge it was much cheaper to patch them up than the mansions that are built today.
    The Army Corps and the meteorolgists from the last century tried to encourage the government to ensure that people would not build in these areas.
    There are really not more storms either, but there is new technology. A century ago the only means of detecting these hurricanes were by the radio communications of ships at sea. When the first weather satellites were launched, we finally had a means of surveillance of hurricanes in the Gulf and later in the Atlantic Basin. Nash Roberts was one of the first meterologists (Nash was the real deal) to discover with the new technology that the hurricanes deformed in their interaction with land.
    The new satellites are now able to locate hurricanes anywhere in the Atlantic, and hurricanes that only annoyed dolphins are now given names. Also don't get rattled, we did not have a lot of detailed information on these storms until around 1900.
    Our biggest problem today is still predicting landfall, intensity, and size. Hurricane Sally illustrates this perfectly. If the 72 hour forecasts had been correct New Orleans would be on the tail end of at least a cat 2 hurricane instead of Gulf Shores. Errors 72 hours out is measured in hundreds of miles. Even at 24 hours an error of 50 to 100 miles, especially on a small storm, might make you wonder why you evacuated (you did the right thing though!!!).

    Hmmmmmm we thought that a category 5 will not be able to move cement walls, but it did, hurricane Maria did more than that, houses felt like they were shaking,in Puerto Rico,we were afraid that the houses wouldn't be able to stay strong enough, the sound of the winds seemed like a monster trying to enter, in the dark it is when you can feel the most fear you don't see anything ,you only hear the water the strong wind ,, and the cars , the hurricane turn them, the rivers left their cause, in the supermarkets there was no food the atm did not work it is horrible to go through something like this,2019 we are still recovering 🤷

  • @coe8159

    I’m gonna be honest this is a bit exaggerated.
    I wouldn’t take a hurricane too seriously unless it’s a high end category 3, I live in eastern Virginia and we got hurricane Isiais as a category 2 and I was looking forward to it and I sat on my porch and enjoyed the wind and rain.
    Hurricanes can be fun.

    Why do you build your homes out of such flimsy materials? It's baffling. Your government needs to get its head out of its ass.

    Anyone else from Florida and think a category 1 just a thunderstorm ?

    • @markwilson4078
      @markwilson4078 4 года назад

      No. I was in Florida for Frances and Jeanne when they were hurricanes and they were not “just thunderstorms”. I remember going without power for days in each storm and having to go over a few blocks just to get to a place that did have power.

    Barometric pressure is a bigger determinant of damage than category and wind speed. Therefore a category. 3 hurricane with 888mb. Of pressure. Will do. As much or. More damage than any. Cat. 5. With 930mb
