X-Men: Pryde of the X-Men is an animated television pilot originally broadcast in 1989 on the Marvel Action Universe television block, featuring Marvel Comics' mutant superheroes of the X-Men.[1] The pilot aired infrequently in syndication and was later released on video. It later served as the basis for Konami's X-Men arcade game.[2]

@@doktorwindo I wonder how many gems like this are stored on old VHS tapes in households around to be world, waiting to be digitalized and shared on internet! :D
Also this pilot is amazing, love seeing stuff like this. Some character costumes, the overall art direction of characters and the stylization of motion and acting in animation changed slightly in the actual series, but all in all, it seems like they nailed 90% of the direction of everything, the technology and pipeline right away and it ended up being successfully used for production of the whole series. No wonder that with a pitch like this, it got greenlit.

@@aza.ak1ra This series actually never got greenlit! Marvel ended up taking the budget for the last couple of episodes of the RoboCop animated series and had this made. It's got amazing animation, uses the 80s lineup and outfits, IMO it was fantastic. Marvel started having a lot of financial troubles after this and X-Men TAS from 1992 was an entirely different ordeal. Needless to say that was a huge hit. But this pilot is history of a series we never got! We at least got the Konami arcade game out of it!
I'm trying to find more gems like this there. I have a few tapes from when I was a kid I'm sorting through right now, trying to make sure they're still usable as well. Thanks for watching!

@@doktorwindo Oooh okay, so there's more history to it! I already read after seeing this that it directly influenced the making of a Konami game, but didn't know it was supposed to be a different series than TAS and didn't get greenlit as such. Also it's so cool and bizzare that it was made out of a RoboCop budget, must have been a crazy time and decision making inside the studio and among management :D
Although I believe that even if it didn't get made as a series in this form, it must have been used as a form of proof of concept to make TAS happen in conversations with the management and investors, visualising what X-Men series could look like and what standard of quality they can achieve with this pipeline and technique in such and such amount of time with specific budget range.
Also didn't know this and TAS caused a financial trouble for Marvel, which sounds crazy given that status of classic TAS has, though not that uncommon in creative entertainment industry. I often find super cool projects that achieved high artistic reception, but wasn't good business-wise, the entire goal of existing an industry :D Like, if people manage to create and deliver a content that sets the standard for future and stays in audience's heart for generations to come, I think it's worth the risk, even if it means the studio might not survive haha.

@@aza.ak1ra Theres all kinds of crazy history with marvel and shows etc! Like the fact that Wolverine in this pilot is Australian instead of canadian because Mad Max was so popular at the time. Flash forward about 20 years and an australian, Hugh Jackman, now plays the canadian Wolvering
But Marvel was selling off movie rights, I believe in the mid to late 90s, and into the 00s. Then Blade happened and the rest is history!

Interesting, wasn't this produced by Sunbow Production? Gi Joe, Amazing Spider-man etc. Animation was initially produced by the Toei Animation, a Japanese animation studio. Thats why it has that Anime look.

That's a good point. I remember seeing alot of stuff produced by Sunbow Production back then. They really put the money into it with Toei, using the budget from the last episode of the Robocop animated series.

This was my era, too. By the time this came out I had hunted down all the issues of the comic and its various spinoffs. Once Chris Claremont left the book, I stopped reading. This is the only example of Claremont’s X-Men animated.
