    In South Africa me make a corn 'tart' (by the lack of another word) as a side to what I think you refer to as barbeque. You cook cornmeal ("soft" consistency). In a skillet, you fry onions, peppers , diced bacon and garlic till golden brown. Add a little stock if it looks dry. You want a 'saucy' consistency. Then, in an ovenproof dish, you layer the cooked cornmeal ( we call it pap), the bacon mixture, cheese, repeat a few times. Top with cream, and grated sharp cheddar. Bake until bubbly. Your ingredients just made me think of our 'paptert' and I though I would share, just for fun. Wonderful video as always, thank you.

    Great information. Just remember in a true SHTF situation and you are hungry it won’t matter if it is organic or the best health conscious choice. I buy organic but I do stockpile a little of everything. Been thru my fair share of issues and have figured out you don’t want to be of the mindset that all you can have is organic. Thanks for the visual, I too learn that way.

    • @ColleenH38
      @ColleenH38 2 года назад +9

      I agree. Our pantries are stocked with organic oats, flour, rice, etc. I also try to buy organic fruits whether fresh or frozen when possible. But I do also have some foods in the pantry like cereal, canned meats, Ravioli (lol) and boxed Mac and cheese. Won't be used for everyday meals but if the food shortage gets bad, we will eat it and be thankful we have it.

    Yes, good basic food is a great beginning. ❤I'm constantly learning what is and isn't working for our family. I do fill my own shelves with good plain food, and this year I'm finding wholefood recipes to replace our convenience foods too , salsa for instance. I also use my preserving skills to fill a bartering shelf , I make cordial, jam,jelly and relishes etc and barter for beautiful fresh produce like boxes of avocados or citrus bags of herbs, etc that I can then use to fill my pantry. Skills are something valuable to use wisely.💙

    Unfortunately brown rice, especially sprouted, has an extremely short shelf life. Even if packed in Mylar with an oxygen absorber. If you want to store rice long term, you should only do white rice varieties.

    • @TheTexasBoys

      You can also consider keeping your rice in the freezer. Also refer to Rain Country on RUclips she has great tips to storing brown rice longer term.

    I felt that it was a good list for the beginner. It gave some important direction, which is important to those who are trying to prepare, but have limited finances to do so.
    A few ideas I would add are: 1) Spices. I can still, (at least of today's date 😊), find a variety of spices for around $1 at Walmart. Cinnamon, garlic, Cumin, paprika, minced or powdered onion, basil, sage, thyme, to name some that can make a bland dish awesome.
    2) I would add Barley to my list of grains. So I've read, it can help lower / control blood - sugar levels. It's filling when added to one of my favorite soups - beef vegetable & barley soups.
    3) Mushrooms. I've started a practice of buy one pack for now, buy one to dehydrate (or can) for later. Mushrooms can replace meat as a protein, or so a doctor had told me. They are also nutrient dense. Although I have not (yet) mastered growing mushrooms, I've read that they do not require sunlight, and grow relatively fast under the right conditions. Like chickpeas, not everyone likes mushrooms. For those of us who do, they can be used in many dishes like, tuna casserole, on pizzas, in spaghetti sauce, in brown gravy - served over meatloaf, or mashed potatoes, or a biscuit, in stews or soups.
    On a personal note, I do have both canned Ravioli and boxed Mac & cheese on the shelf. In my case, I was gifted with it. But if that is what some folks can afford in order to build their pantry, either is better than going hungry, even if they are not as nutritionally sound. Yet, I also agree that nutrition is highly important as a rule, especially if one should become under stressful situations for whatever reason.

    I think a variety of things are good to have even if it isn’t the healthiest… food boredom… if not for your family for others to help them, to barter with.
    In less things are grown inside a building the label organic is just a label…other farms spray their crop and wind pushes that spray to other areas how does one know for sure the organic item is really organic.

      ???Iodized salt might have microplastics--white rice does, for sure, if you get it from Asia--but not necessarily pink Himalayan salt. If you have ever seen how salt is mined--I've seen it first-hand in Salzburg, Austria--you would realize what a ludicrous concept that is. Plastics would have had to existed while those ancient sea beds were evaporating.
      I live in Utah where Redmond is, and I can tell you that because of their corrupt ties to the state legislature, they have created a monopoly on raw milk. They are corrupt from the word go. I cannot support them in ANY way!!!

    I don't have the experience with using it but have done my own research and my understanding on milk alternatives aside from coconut milk, your almond and oat milks are basically super high in phytic acid that is very bad for you in many ways including your teeth enamel. If you consider that you traditionally would soak oats and almonds for the purpose of neutralizing and pulling out the antinutrients then you pour off that liquid. My understanding is that the milk is just that and we should not be drinking it.
