CBS has been showcasing some really incredible non-mainstream talent lately - especially Country/Blues/Americana/Blue Grass. Billy Strings, Charlie Crockett, Gary Clark Jr., to name a few. Much respect to a big network using their power and reach to give these artists the spotlight.

I was friends with friends of hers. I remember her playing music on my sister’s front porch in Arkansas with some of my cousins. She had a beer in her hand, a guitar in her lap, wearing a baggy T shirt, cut off jeans & she was barefooted. They’d pass around a joint, take a swig of beer & play the best front porch down home music I ever heard. She has come so far from the girl on my sister’s porch. I am so proud to know her back when it started. You go gal.

I’m a musician too, I play in a touring band, we play about 200 or so gigs a year, that does NOT mean we don’t have roots or close friends we see & visit. sure you meet lots of different people, but she KNEW us. The front porch thing wasn’t a jam with strangers, we played most every night after dinner; no she didn’t stay long, only 4 1/2 months. She doesn’t grow roots?? She is just the sweetest human. She plays at a music festival near me every year. My 18 year old son goes to a young musicians academy they have there. One late night, she and some of the other performers were down by the river nearby, and my son happened to be there. She found out that he was in the academy, grabbed a guitar, sat down by the water with him and jammed with him for an hour. She gave my son this special moment, and I'm not even certain she has any clue she did, because she is so down to earth and doesn't see herself as this famous person like everyone else does. She just thought it was cool that he was that into music and just wanted to play some with him. You go to that festival you'll hear so many Sierra Ferrell stories of her just being fun and awesome blending in with the festival goers when she's not performing.

One clip they showed of her busking on the street was from Asheville, NC - but they had a dot on the map and the voice over saying "Chicago". Asheville is/was a noted stop for buskers and train hoppers. Abby the Spoon Lady also started here.

@@DustyLeeSledge Ive been busking here on and off for 10 years. It helped foster artists like her and you can make some quick cash when you need it as a musician. They don't hassle you. There was debate amongst the city council/etc. but its legal with some restrictions.

I was lucky to be in the audience at the Orange Peel in AVL way back in January of 2013 (or 2014?). It was a Todd Snider concert.
Todd told a story about meeting a group of kids outside an earlier venue he was about to do a show at...in either Virginia or West Virginia, I think. One of the kids was a girl carrying a guitar. He asked her if she could sing - and she played him one of her songs.
Todd Snider liked it so much he asked her if she'd like to join him down in Asheville. If so, he'd let her sing that song in the middle of his set at the Orange Peel. And she did.
She was great. The crowd loved her.
I believe it was Sierra Ferrell's first time playing on stage for a large crowd.
I'm very happy to see her doing so well all these years later.

Her voice is great but it’s not her voice.
She has that ‘panache’ that can’t be taught- she’s a communicator. Like the others- surprisingly few- where they are even more powerful in person than on a record or the radio: Nanci Griffith, Billy Joel, Allison Krause, Evanescence, Merle Haggard, David Draiman, Arthur Fiedler, Suzy Bogus, others; fabulous listening to their recorded works.
In person and live, however, they have a presence that communicates- even if they weren’t great singers or not accomplished musicians they’d have that presence. Combine the two and you get Sierra Ferrel joining the ranks of those noted above, and a few others.
She’s ‘believable’ no matter what she sings, and has great pitch. The voice is just one more good thing.

When I finally got to see her perform at Freshgrass in North Adams, MA all my feellings about her were confirmed; She was the best act of the weekend, by a long shot, and the next year she was one of the headliners there. One of the most creative and talented singers on the planet. If you have not seen Sierra live, do yourself a favor; you will not be disappointed. Amazing!!
