American Airlines Flight 96 was a regular McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10 flight operated by American Airlines. On June 12, 1972, the aircraft's rear cargo door blew off while flying over Windsor, Ontario, en route from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport to Buffalo Niagara International Airport; it is thus sometimes referred to as the Windsor incident.

For 2 pilots “who didn’t have much experience with the DC 10”, they did a darn good job getting the plane down safely with everyone surviving

A hole blown in the plane - "We have a small problem!" Capt McCormack is a master of understatement! He is also a seriously brilliant pilot.
+Richard Cochrane For an amazing Pilot like him, that may very well only be a small problem
he the captian of ba 9 was worse!
We have a small problem all 4 engines have failed.
"Passengers are advised to put on their bicycle clips!"
Ciao
Yep! He saved the lives of many innocent people flying on that Death-Chamber 10
Brice McCormick is a legend. If there's an aviator's hall of fame he deserves to be in it.
@Scotty Johnson Scotty how about a Walk of Fame like in Hollywood?
He clearly deserved the Polaris Award for aviation heroics.
If there's an Aviator Hall of Fame, Captain Harvey Beebe Jr will be in there as well. He is my father. He had a hand in flying the Berlin airlift and retired as a 747 captain after 32 years of MERITORIOUS service with Pan American World Airways. He never ever put a scratch on himself an airplane or anyone he transported. I flew with him on several occasions. The world will never ever see another pilot like Capt Harvey Beebe Jr.
@@Steve1959Your daddy's a hero. But why are you trying to steal the thunder from somebody else?Your comment doesn't belong in this thread.
Beside Sully.
Damn fine landing for a crew that only had 75hrs experience on the DC10, on the job training I guess....God bless them...
I like it when it ends good and all survive. I hope those pilots received awards.
Goes to show that they did not have weak skills. DC-10 and MD-11s can be a bit tricky to land under normal circumstances no matter how many hours one has in the aircraft, but only when the pilot has a weak grasp of fundamentals.
@@paulymac5513 I'm sure they did P.M. Unfortunately Captain Bryce was killed in an auto accident some years later. Tragic.
Bryce McCormick had training shortly prior to this incident. Since it was a new fleet type, he had asked the sim instructor to simulate a hydraulic loss. So, ironically, he was probably the most prepared to handle this of all AA DC-10 Captains.
I hope the pilots and the crew got recognized for their professionalism in landing that plane, without rudder control. Amazing skill !
I literally was on the edge of my seat watching this. I know it was over 40 years ago and he music definitely did a lot to get me invested emotionally but I was just so happy when he applied reverse thrust to straighten out the landing. So glad everyone survived. That’s one hell of a pilot!
Both pilots were tremendous,it takes not only good technical know how but emotional courage too both pilots did a magnificent job. ThanK God. The Boeing company's products are still somewhat dubious. Terry Offord
Well said mate.
That ladies and gentlemen are what you call a crew with titanium balls... Capt. McCormack I salute you, Sir!

I always get this huge sense of relief when all survive, it wasn't looking too got there for a few.

The captain was killed by a headon crash years after this at 77.
The amazing thing is the crew pulled that off when the plane was brand new and no one had much experience on it. That’s some serious talent at work there.
The guys running the plane should have received medals, what heroism! What skill it took to avoid tragedy.
Boy how cool and calm is this cat....the ultimate pilot..much honor and respect ..
Amazing work by pilots!!!
Airmanship at its finest.
Alec no matter what anyone says, don't change your sim.... your work is excellent and highly educational as is.... you should be working for the NTSB
Hi there, Dave! I appreciate the complement. I have no plans on changing sims. The only thing I would do is to better improve my video-making.
A short while back that was a no-brainer. The problem today is that so damn many people are so good with sims that their numbers far exceed their demand in both private and government capacity. The guy is good, but you can't get a cup of coffee with that today. As a result, most sim-oriented folks do it as a hobby. Another killer is that the excellence of modern sim software has negated much of the individual skill formerly needed to produced quality work.
@@AllecJoshuaIbay where do you download your aircraft I use avsim
No casualties...among the living anyway. There was a dead body being transported in a casket in the cargo hold that was sucked out and fell to the ground near Windsor. That's the kind of luck I'd have after I'm gone.
theMoerster You and me both lol
Positive thinking!
"I'll fly away, oh glory, I'll fly away..."
Things to do in Windsor when you're dead.
Well, better to fall out of an airplane in flight after you're dead than to fall out of one while you're still alive.
This made me so happy that they all survive :) great video Allec!
What makes me so angry is the McDonald Douglas did nothing to fix the problem afterwards which lead to the Turkish airline crash which killed over 300 people.
Ive flown twice in my life i hated it il never fly again
@@SormonAusPol- What was McDonnell-Douglas supposed to do when a customer operator ignores its recommendation to install redesigned door latching parts?

Captain: *We have a small problem*
Back row passenger takes a bird to the chest.
I remember when this happened, I was a Student Pilot at the Windsor flying club and was out practicing Spin recovery in a 140 Cherokee that day.
Windsor ATC told us to get our butts back to the airport and down on the ground ASAP. which we did of course. Later we found out about the details and realized we had been en route to the practice area (south) just before the cargo door fell off, it was just good fortune for us we didn't get hit!
The DC-10s at it again.
Aviation Awesomeness lol
Nice rhyme XD
WE WILL MAKE DC 10S GREAT AGAIN
JUNK aircraft from the get go .............
Didn't this exact same issue come up many times in several fatal crashes??
Absolutely insane that he was able to land that plane with a gigantic hole in the bottom, a jammed rudder, no tail engine, barely any elevator control, and was able to control the descent and direction through engine power alone. Incredible. I'd be hugging and kissing those guys.
Wow - what flying! This is what makes me admire these pilots so much - their ability to think and act under pressure. My grandfather, 2LT Kenneth Harris, was a C-46/C-47 Hump Pilot in WWII.
Great pilot coordination, Cockpit Resource Management. Learning to fly the plane all over again with completely different control inputs, and getting it right on the first try is aviator talent.
I legitimately breathed a sigh of relief when it revealed no one died on the first flight... then went "aww" when you brought up the second flight (the Turkish one).
Anyways I've been spending the past hour or two binge-watching these crash recreations, they're pretty good. Please don't stop.
Does anyone else here feel their leg muscles tense when they try to apply their "cyber brakes" to slow down the damaged planes in these videos? Asking for a friend...
Nah !
We get it, you’re a female pilot.
@@ij2759 What a douchey comment.
7:20 "This is your captain speaking. We've got a small problem. The runway is gonna look a lot smaller now." Abosolutely magnificent flying! Small problem!?
The right thing to say to his passengers, from a Man who knows his responsibilities.
Those pilots pulled out a miracle!!! That last bit about adjusting the reverse thrust to keep the airplane on the runways was nothing short of brilliant. He basically had nothing but ailerons and landed the damn thing. Amazing. The DC-10 saved the day too... even beat up it held it together.
Very sturdy and stout aircraft gs.
I used to fly American's DC-10s often between LGA - BUF when they planes were brand new. I remember when this happened. The DC-10 had too many integral design problems.
Man I would do anything to fly a DC-10. I wish MD wasn't bought out, maybe they'd still be around today
+Ian Jed Boeing isnt an airline xD

Mr.Bubbafilms could have just called you an idiot and walked away, but he corrected you and you learned from. a win win, but that doesn't always happen in every case, especially on here on the "wonderful" site of RUclips
If youtube was a city, it would be Detroit. Once great but now is littered with sadness
First rate air crew. These guys knew how to fly even when it got tough; or even impossible. DC-10's seem to be involved in a disproportionate number of air mishaps. That may mean that the plane has problems, or it may not --- the numbers just provide a commentary on how long the plane has been in service and the many numbers which were produced.
I remember that incident.Full kudos to the Captain and the entire flight crew. Hope they all got raises, bonuses, and promotions. They earned it.
Dear Allec, thank you very much for this. Your work puts everything into perspective & makes one fully understands what happens when aeroplanes are faced with different situations. I'm so hooked, watching each & every one of them
You do an incredible job on these Allec, just wanted you to know I find them to be the best out of all the others on RUclips of air disasters.
'Deathtrap' of an aircraft.
Brilliant Airmanship!
Allec, my heart was really engaged with this video. The music and the way you describe everything was inspirational. Everyone survived a wonderful ending!
That flight crew did an amazing job! Excellent flying!
That was amazing - such calmness and immediately executed thought -
That captain was awesome & saved the day. Give him a raise!!!!
Amazing video, a few years ago i had a traditon where every night at 10:00 PM ETC I ate Honeycrisp Apples while watching this video, i have seen this DOZENs of times since i first watched it and i still enjoy this video even today! now i am twelve and lifes going amazing, as in for you, Thank you for getting me though my late Childhood allec!
Amazing. What a skilled pilot
Amazing video. Glad everybody on the flight made it down safely. Sad to hear about the other plane.
lucky they had a highly skilled pilot.
And, equally importantly, that the damage wasn't catastrophic enough to make the aircraft un-flyable no matter who was at the controls. Cargo door and cabin floor failure should never occur on any aircraft. It is better to depend on safe and reliable aircraft than to hope that a genius flight crew will be on board and able to work miracles.
Allec, I have to applaud your work you've done an amazing job with these videos. I'm transfixed totally transfixed.
Great job - Thank you !
and now his work is FLAWLESS!
Mad skills! AJI, Kudos for the video, as usual.
You finally made one where the people made it out alive
+NotoriousStormtrooper yeah
NotoriousStormtrooper no he didn't dumbass watch the damn video
If you want to be specific, United 232 had survivors
3:01 Captain: "Let me have it". That is a real pilot talking. Within the past few years 3 airliners have crashed because the autopilot kicked off and the crew couldn't manually fly the plane.
preach
Raoul Cruz, those accidents might have had variables that automatically turned off the auto pilot, or the pilots deemed the variable(s) unfit to trust to auto pilot. Autopilots have limited control and can’t fly a badly damaged plane, this too can mean the pilot can’t fly that same damaged plane.
The accidents I’m referring to were not damaged aircraft. Asiana at SFO, Air France 447, Asiana 8501, Colgan 3407.
If you know Spanish try looking up the 2008 Mexico City Learjet crash that killed Mexico’s secretary of interior.
The pilot tells the copilot to give him control of the plane...
Almost recovers too.
That’s because pilots flying back when this happened mostly came out of the military with over a million dollars in training invested in them. They were real pilots.
Finally a video where I thought there wouldn't be a massive death count at the end
Brilliant video Sir! Keep up the good work. You totally nailed the sound of those DC10 General Electric Turbofans…..the hackles stood up on the back of my neck as they went to take off thrust, and during the engine directional manoeuvres!
The icing on the cake was the perfect choice of music!
Nice work, Allec!
Subbed. Awesome work man, awesome work! I really enjoy watching these videos, very informative. What simulator are you running?
Flight Simulater 2004 (FS2004)
Awesome that every one survived
This was like watching a movie. Since I had no idea how it would end, this was more drama than any airplane disaster movie could ever deliver. Thank you for this.
I certainly hope those pilots received some kind of award for that superb airmanship
One of the commenters mentioned BA 9, Alec. The one over Indonesia that flew through the ash cloud of a volcano. Would love to see that one. Also, nice job on this vid. Now if the airlines would be as diligent in fixing structural problems w their jets...

was an amazing job by pilots. Remember incidents like this when they try to convince you human pilots aren't necessary anymore. An autopilot no matter how sophisticated would have killed everyone on board this flight.
MrTagnan That was PAL 434
+MrTagnan Congrats! You have commented on the wrong video! This is AA96 not PAL434

MD issues recommendations......but they weren't followed through 2 years later, apparently.
The FAA went along with MD in sidestepping the grounding of all DC-10s and the immediate modification of cabin-floors with pressure-equalisation vents. This led to a similar hull-damage incident that caused the Paris crash in March, 1974. All to protect DC-10 sales.
@@None-zc5vg And after TC981 crashed, DC-10 sales plummeted because many airlines didn't trust MD. Only then did MD and the FAA ground the DC-10s, cut vents into the floors, and fixed the cargo door.
I love this channel man, so informative, great job !
great job on these videos Allec!!!
Baggage Claim Flight 96: Random streets in Windsor, Ontario.
*Salute* Captain McCormack. Absolutely a true master of your craft, as well as an inspiration.
And yet our society lauds imbeciles who stand across from each other inside a cage, like animals and punch each other... There's no skill, no talent in causing harm to another... Yet, they're paid millions... People like, Captain McCormack are thee unsung, uncelebrated heroes, worthy of applause.
Thats just the way we like it Judah boy
What does a sport have to do with this accident??
This is exactly what's wrong with people today. This is exactly what drives a proverbial wedge through my inner being. I HATE explaining things that needn't be explained, but alright - this is the last time.
It has NOTHING to do with a sport, it has EVERYTHING to do with the reflection upon our society, as I had described in my original post. People see others who lock each other inside a cage and strike each other about the head, and they call this talent, they call it art (and I'm puking, literally as I basterdize these terms by simply reiterating them). They call them "warriors" or "heroes." And as I stated, and stated clearly, that these people are not heroes, they're not warriors - they're not but a tenth of the man that Captain McCormack is.
I created this dichotomy to illustrate how vapid our society is. A society that lauds miscreants, and this is why we never hear about men like Captain McCormack.
Sorry but your comparison is stupid. This is similar to complaining about people preferring things that you may find offensive or distasteful. "They call them 'warriors' or 'heroes'" you say, and I ask: Who calls them warriors or heroes? Who is "they"? Some people maybe? So what???
It is a bit silly to draw comparisons between a pilot who used his training to get out of an emergency with a cage fighter that trains to fight. These are two different things that merit no comparison. And yes, like any other profession, cage fighting requires skills, training, commitment, talent.
Captain McCormack is a hero. No doubt. And I am sure he received his recognition. He deserved it. But what else do you want this "deeply repugnant society" to do? Life continues. That is why is called a SOCIETY. A Society made of many individuals with different preferences, cultures, priorities, and educational levels.
That is a really stupid comparison. If you don't like MMA that's cool but it has nothing to do with this much less drawing some sort of comparison. The pilot's abilities speak for themself.
I'm addicted to these videos, nice job!
The perspective the video gave was great. Great piloting as well
"We've got a small problem" LOL just a smaal one.
Awesome Pilots!
Could this be the first of the many documented safety incidents in the long and storied history of the DC-10. Back in the day I certainly wouldn't have booked a ticket on one. Many design flaws led to an unsafe flight record. The most famous of which is undoubtedly the Sioux City crash of American flight 232 due to a damaged fan disc which separated from the aircraft causing damage to ill placed and designed hydraulic lines, leaving the aircraft virtually uncontrollable. After many design flaws were corrected the DC-10 went on to be a reliable aircraft, but the damage to it's reputation had already been done, and it has never been able to live them down.
Just brillant piloting and monitoring by this crew. With none of them having over 75 hrs on the type, this is just an excellent example of suberb execution and implementing of CRM training. Props to these guys for never giving up. Great video!

I often wonder about passengers who escape death, make it back to the airport and board another plane to continue on their journey. For me, i am heading straight to the nearest car rental counter
I was near O'hare when another DC10 had a problem. Flight 191 crashed on take off in full view of all the terminals, all died. I too have wondered what would I have done if I was waiting for a flight and actually saw this. I kind of think I would have left the airport and went home and hugged my kids. I flew quite a few times after that, but I usually thought about it. The folks who got on those planes after that crash have my admiration.
