The other day i saw a PC one of my friends built about 4 years ago. It had an i7 2700 and a MSI gtx 660ti, both of which were powered by a Vorago "500W" PSU, and even worse, since this sketchy PSU didn't have any PCIe power connections the GPU was powered by a 2 molex to 6pin PCIe adapter but only one molex cable was connected, since the only other one it had was connected to the hard drive. I was amazed that the thing turned on, and even more when I realized that it hadn't blown up in 4 years.
This friend just told me that he had his ram die in this system....twice.... And then i asked him why he hadn't bought a new PSU, and he told me "because it is too expensive", but we all know that three sets of 8GB of RAM are more expensive than one decent PSU...

A single gpu never needs more than 750w and that figure has a 20%safety margin built in. Your problem is much more likely to be a quality issue. Buy the best quality psu that you can , most of the manufacturers have a range of psu's, go with a higher end psu from a reputable manufacturer( such as Seasonic) and you'll be fine.
i always go sightly above what my pc needs. currently my pc uses around 450w but i went for a 650w psu just in case in the future i decided to upgrade my GPU then i dont need to worry to much about upgrading my power supply.

relentless5321 I would go with a 600Watt PSU, but you should rather go with a 700 or 750 Watt PSU, if your planning to do some overclocking and or Want another graphics card.
Not really, he adds it at the end because and never oversells their stuff: CoolerMaster is a solid brand that happens to sponsor Linus and there for help keep this show alive. So I don't care if he adds a small advertisement for them at the end of the video and if you don't like it, you have the perfectly fair choice of not watching it even if it is as stupid as a reason as this.
disulfideprotein Absolutely - we want to support Linus and his community and just want brand awareness. That's why he even makes that joke at the end :)
Thanks Linus, that link amazed me, I have a gaming PC and the Recommended PSU Wattage: 374 W! I have a 400 watt power supply so I am just making it but dont have to sweat it so much anymore till I upgrade. I must have the most eco friendly gaming system ever... crazy..

This was a very good video. I liked how you gave us a source to be able to find the appropriate amount of watts we should be purchasing for a power supply. I’m just building my first PC and I have to say I’m very satisfied with the build and I’m glad I found this video to help guide me to the right one

Get a higher rated PSU. get something around 600-700W. I'd suggest Seasonic S-12II series Corsair (Preferably CS over CX) or FSP Aurum 700W. To be honest though I wouldn't go with a r9 290 in the first place. The card runs very hot and eats a lot of power. You can get a GTX 970 for a similar price. It has better performance and requires less beefy PSU.
Corsair AX1200 6 years old, went wrong last year, sent back under their 7 year warranty, 4 days later a brand new one arrived in post, from UK to Netherlands and back in 4 days over a weekend as well. Can't fault that service.
1:30 + ,, actually that is exactly what i did..it never hurts to go over budget for a psu ...specially when you are a gamer and considering doing an SLI vs buying a new gpu...also when he said draws a bit more from the wall..we are talking about 10$ a year...i remember teksyndicate (those guyz and linus are my go to guyz in pc's) calculating stuff like these...so its not like you are gonna loose much
An Autistic Dog and Jtheos I think Tek Syndicate is more of a political/networking type of guy with a hint of hardware wizard (Like Linus and all the others :D). He differs to all the others. Which is to my liking but I guess there is always a hater or more ^_^ . Don't get me wrong I don't hate on any hardware reviewer because they all want to help us choose and learn about the best hardware as well as efficiency and budget wise. So why hate when they all want to help?
if you don't know always go default 650 , if your planing on going with isolated liquid cooling go with the 850 supernova, if its Custom pump system you will need the calculator for sure.
I just bought an EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3, 80 Plus Gold... doing custom mod cable replacements, so I needed fully modular, and I love the eco mode... doesn't even run the fan unless it needs to.
My computer has a freezing issue while playing games, or before the games even start up. This usually only occurs on more graphics intense games like GTA V, or Battlefield, etc. The freezing stops everything, even sound, and can only be fixed by performing a force shutdown. What I did notice was that the PSU was pretty hot and that it only had 430w. I presume this is a problem with the PSU? ASUS 970 PRO GAMING/AURA AMD FX-8350 GTX 1060 3gb 8GB RAM ?????????????
I borught Corsair RM850i few days ago. i know it's just a power supply but they were so cool at packaging it. and the bag it was in. the bag that contains the cables. good god i can just lick the damn thing.
Antonijo Ivčić doesnt matter. i am using a 500w and i have better specs than you tbh. doesnt matter what godamn size ur tv is. speakers plug into the wall not ur pc power. and things in the future will consume less power not more.
yeah you'r golden my specs are 1070 OC @2070mhz, i7 6850k OC @4.7Ghz , 2 SSD's , 1 HHD , asus deluxe II . Only using a 700W PSU , you are way above golden
KG-Virus Thank you! Do you think I will damage my components if I buy a PSU that has extra power? I saw a LinusTechTips video about it where he said you should have a PSU that has 20% more than your needs to be ideal. Any thoughts about that?
i don't think so , by the way you can use EVGA power calculator ( www.evga.com/power-meter/ ) to calculate the your power needs , it will add 100W-150W so you can be on the safe side in the future
One time I thought it was a good idea to use a room fan on a computer to cool it down. It worked unsurprisingly. Also I used a coffee filter on a case fan to prevent dust from entering.
They've switched OEMs a couple of times so some of their older ones are questionable. They started using Seasonic though for newer series (like the many-times-mentioned V-series) and they've been very good according to reviews.
If you mean why not just buy a Seasonic in the first place, then sometimes Seasonic might not be available at a retailer while CM is. Also, I'm not sure why but rebranded units are cheaper than original Seasonic units. Might be that Seasonic cherry picks the best units for themselves and sells off the rest to other companies, much like how Micron/Samsung/etc do with flash memory chips.
This tech quickie video is as dumb as possible. Why didn't you tell anything about current rates and voltage lines? These are the main parameters you should be looking at, not at those "power" numbers. The problem with PSUs can be when its rated at 500 watts, but when you look to current rates (they all are specified on the sticker on each and every PSU), it can only deliver like 24 amps on the 12v lines, which is only 288 watts really (Power = Voltage * Current). The rest of 500 watts goes to 5v and 3.3v lines, that never ever will need that much power - CPUs and GPUs and hard drive *disk spinning motors* use 12 volts.
Totally agree. I bought a PSU that said it was a 600W PSU. Ace I think the company was called. Within 5 mins of booting up, I smelt smoke and my computer died. I then bought a CIT 600W PSU and it hasn't ever let me down. In fact they are so good I was using a 450W by then to power my GTX 770 OC Edition. Says it all right. My system was saying it was using 480 watts of power yet it was getting it from a 450W PSU. Since then I have a 600w non modular non 80+ cert just a bog standard PSU for a cheap ass like me and I would recommend them to ANYONE who is on a serious budget.
Mega Know Disagree... techquicke videos are meant to be simple for amateurs, but this one just was over-dumbed-down. For example the video about Hyper Threading is very good. There is no need for amateur to know about processor registers, ALUs, FPUs and cache, and that video described the HT very good as a black box technology. But to choose a PSU one needs to consider its current rates on 12v rails and understand that maximum total power is distributed between different rails. That is some technical explanation rather than stupid "buy a PSU from a respectable brand with big experience".
sammyjc89 Joke's on you man, If you smelled smoke and the PSU died, than clearly the PSU had no undervolt and overcurrent protection,(or they were not working which means that it was not properly tested) which means that you should have bought a better quality PSU in the first place. Have accidentally short circuited my PSU, when modding, no prob, just disconnect and reconnect the power cord. runs great today still. On GF's comouter when upgrading CPU it got too much to handle for the PSU, simply shut down, she did this a few times without me knowing, still runs the same PSU today ,no prob.
well if you're an expert already, these vids are not aimed at you at all, so quit complaining! Bsides, any decent quality unit will have the power distributed properly across the 3,5, and 12v rails, and this wil not be a problem. As he mentioned in the vid "buying a reputable brand" and you won't have to worry =) Besides if it's that big of a deal, just get the next bigger size and don't worry about it.
Hampus Lytz that is a stupid solution. "Just buy the most expensive stuff and don't worry". You can answer this way about any hardware. but people want to know stuff about hardware because they don't want just to buy expensive things because they're expensive.
Now all my senses came back. Watched this the year the video was produced and watching it again this 2021. Right on time for my new build. Thanks Linus, you’re like my inner pc conscience. 😂
that cooler master website is the hecking best! I highly recommend using it! Don't think cooler master is trying to sell you their power supplies because they really aren't!
Linus thanks for the calculator tip! I've serviced hundreds of pc's and just always recommended to buy a "branded" PSU. 12 years later decided to google it.
I'm having shutdowns with gtx 2 760's in SLI using a 600 watt PSU. I thought I could pull it off but it only worked fine for about a month. I learned the hard way that those PSU usage calculators don't always show the actual usage.

+Andrew Hamid personally I go over kill on the psu wattage just for the ability to add things as and when I want, but your build would be fine with 650w, personally I'd get an 800w just for future upgrades but as I say that's personal choice
+Andrew Hamid DON'T use a biostar mobo, better: MSI 970A-G43
asus stix gpus are overprized, I'd use sapphire ore msi
really need water-cooling?(only useful for real heavy OC):Cooler Master Hyper 412S
Never heard of the case manufacturer?!?
400 W really sufficient(including headroom): be quiet! System Power 7 400W
if you consider upgrading to a 970,etc. : be quiet! System Power 7 600W
ugh i have to buy a 1000watt power supply, my computer keeps shuting down when ever im playing video games and i just found out why.thanks techquickie
Jesus christ what setup are you running that requires 1000watts
MasterG Yeah, but you're buying 1000W PSU.
Just get a 1080ti and an appropriate PSU.
@@uzimyspecial Lamp probably has a washing machine connected to it
A single gpu never needs more than 750w and that figure has a 20%safety margin built in. Your problem is much more likely to be a quality issue. Buy the best quality psu that you can , most of the manufacturers have a range of psu's, go with a higher end psu from a reputable manufacturer( such as Seasonic) and you'll be fine.
1000w power supply? for what, an iron man suit?
1:52 Ow..owow, my ears. No offense to you Linus from six years ago but you really have come a long way. Love your vids!
you should've discussed efficiency rating
i always go sightly above what my pc needs. currently my pc uses around 450w but i went for a 650w psu just in case in the future i decided to upgrade my GPU then i dont need to worry to much about upgrading my power supply.
that's a lot, a 500w should be enough for most upgrades unless you're gonna get a dual gpu in the future
Lmao just use some electricity cables like wtf bro
I have a corsair CX600M
I have seen Thousands of videos in youtube, this intro is far more good than others.
What PSU Should I get?
CPU: Intel Pentium II @ 233 MHz (maybe overclocking to 5 GHz wth some fancy liquid nitrogen)
GPU: S3 VIRGE-SX/GX PCI (375/385)
RAM: 128 MB
HDD: 3GB
Motherboard: I have no idea, let's see what I find in my attic
Cooler: attic time!
I would recommend a potato, as Linus has shown in the video. Any type should do, but I prefer Idaho potatoes. They also make excellent fries.
Evyatar Ziv Intel Pentium II best gaming processor!
a rock might be overkill try a hydrogen isotope that should be more than enough
Can some also help here too, what PSU do i need for this build uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/yt27Hx
relentless5321 I would go with a 600Watt PSU, but you should rather go with a 700 or 750 Watt PSU, if your planning to do some overclocking and or Want another graphics card.
Damnit Bobby!
A power supply is a serious piece of equipment!
It's not to be taken lightly!
I know because I sell computers and computer accessories!
But dhayyuuuuuud
I hate how every one of these videos is an ad for CoolerMaster...
CoolerMasterNA See this guy gets it :D
Thanks Linus, that link amazed me, I have a gaming PC and the Recommended PSU Wattage: 374 W! I have a 400 watt power supply so I am just making it but dont have to sweat it so much anymore till I upgrade. I must have the most eco friendly gaming system ever... crazy..
Damn linus's eyebrows holdin hands xD
I bought a power supply named "Power Supply 700W" for like 25 bucks. Very legit
Seems legit.
can it get anymore legit?
sajid hossain Only if the 12v rail has lower A than the 5v.
Why would you buy over rated crap?
Having a bit of trouble at home Linus? Lol.
Just got my hands on an old crappy tower-pc from '02. Disassembled it and then reassembled it and it's still working, now I really feel confident about building my own gaming pc in the future :)
would a 450 watt PSU be good for a system that needs about 350 watts?
The Zero so how about a 500 watt one
Just make sure it has an 8 pin connector for a new gpu in the future. I've made that mistake.....
a 100w overhead is not a big gap so i hope you went for it, just don't get something crazy like a 750w
Well I just found out that I only need 161watts of power for my PC and I went a bought a 600watt power supply, fucking genius me.
This was a very good video. I liked how you gave us a source to be able to find the appropriate amount of watts we should be purchasing for a power supply. I’m just building my first PC and I have to say I’m very satisfied with the build and I’m glad I found this video to help guide me to the right one
this man is the one for pc he knows everything you need to know
Cooler Master's my main choice for PSU's
No explaination on 80plus certification and efficiency?
It was sponsored by Coolermaster... they don't really care about certification either.
Please Will I have a Problem with this build.
Ram: Corsair 8GBx2
Power supply: EVGA 500W 80 Plus Power Supply (100-W1-0500-KR)
CPU: i7 4770k
Graphic Card: Sapphire R9 290 TRI X
Motherboard: H87-PLUS
Any problems to run?
E.G, parts getting damaged?
Bottlenecks?
Thats fine, but in the future with upgrades you will have to push to a 600-750
500w for a 290 is pretty low. At least go with a 600w one, just to be safe.
***** Still a very good GPU mate.
*****
When I was writing it, the GTX 970 is about 100 EUR cheaper.
Corsair AX1200 6 years old, went wrong last year, sent back under their 7 year warranty, 4 days later a brand new one arrived in post, from UK to Netherlands and back in 4 days over a weekend as well. Can't fault that service.
awesome ! LIKED
Its been a year... why is there no replies?
@@NoNamelolxd lol
1:30 + ,, actually that is exactly what i did..it never hurts to go over budget for a psu ...specially when you are a gamer and considering doing an SLI vs buying a new gpu...also when he said draws a bit more from the wall..we are talking about 10$ a year...i remember teksyndicate (those guyz and linus are my go to guyz in pc's) calculating stuff like these...so its not like you are gonna loose much
Fuckin HATE Tek Syndicate. He's such a cocklick. But Linus is awesome
An Autistic Dog That was a good one i gotta admit.
This video has helped me so much! Thanks Linus for everything!
You are a boss. 2nd video I've watched of yours today putting together custom PC. Thanks!
Yep, definitely LinusWifeTips
If you want that, follow him on twitter, he posts some good tips there..
If my gaydar has anything going for it - Linus has no real concern about "understanding women"
About to finish my first build in 10 years. About to go “Nuc-i-lear”!
1. bequiet!
2. Seasonic
3. Corsair
WORD!
Gotta disagree bro, I'd say it's:
1. Seasonic
2. Corsair
3. *be* quiet
SENTENCE!
Sharcs
Actually, the name is "be quiet!"
if you don't know always go default 650 , if your planing on going with isolated liquid cooling go with the 850 supernova, if its Custom pump system you will need the calculator for sure.
number one rule: dont cheap out on power supply
I run my PC on EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G+, 80 Plus Gold.
Sometimes i open up my case to check if it is still there because it is too quiet.
I just bought an EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3, 80 Plus Gold... doing custom mod cable replacements, so I needed fully modular, and I love the eco mode... doesn't even run the fan unless it needs to.
May be fan doesnt start!
3:03 Wow, he combined Nuculur and Nuclear into Nuculear.
ASUS 970 PRO GAMING/AURA
AMD FX-8350

I borught Corsair RM850i few days ago. i know it's just a power supply but they were so cool at packaging it. and the bag it was in. the bag that contains the cables. good god i can just lick the damn thing.
"I'm Fine", is very simple. FINE = frantic, insecure, neurotic and emotional. You're welcome.
are all power supply works on 120v & 220v? some of the countries uses 220v
+Patrick Davin the psu´s have a little switch to choose btwn 120v or 220v , im from argentina and i have to use the switch in 220v
***** thanks
+Perruso CSGO Newer PSUs can run between 100-240V 50/60 Hz without flicking a switch.
I had a couple of both can switch automatically.
dain that first example was so deep it threw me into a dimension of thinking for split second.
i have Napajanje Corsair CX Modular Series CX750M, 750 Watt, ATX

is ith good?or too good psu for this PC
Your psu is way overkill. A 500w would work good
D3LTASAS11 yeah but i am using gaming keyboard,lcd tv 68 cm,high definiton speakers,and i will upgrade pc :D
Antonijo Ivčić doesnt matter. i am using a 500w and i have better specs than you tbh. doesnt matter what godamn size ur tv is. speakers plug into the wall not ur pc power. and things in the future will consume less power not more.
D3LTASAS11 relax man. LOL :better to have more than less ;)
Antonijo Ivčić have fun spending extra money for something you dont fucking need.
Dat intro
Should a get a 750W PSU for a strix gtx 1070 OC? I plan on chaging my GPU in 2/3 years for a 1x80 in the future
with i7 6700K, 32GB RAM, one smagung 950 pro, one 850 evo, one 2TB WD HDD, z170 pro gaming mobo and Corsair 780T case
and noctua NH-D15
yeah you'r golden
my specs are 1070 OC @2070mhz, i7 6850k OC @4.7Ghz , 2 SSD's , 1 HHD , asus deluxe II . Only using a 700W PSU , you are way above golden
KG-Virus Thank you! Do you think I will damage my components if I buy a PSU that has extra power? I saw a LinusTechTips video about it where he said you should have a PSU that has 20% more than your needs to be ideal. Any thoughts about that?
i don't think so , by the way you can use EVGA power calculator ( www.evga.com/power-meter/ )
to calculate the your power needs , it will add 100W-150W so you can be on the safe side in the future
One time I thought it was a good idea to use a room fan on a computer to cool it down. It worked unsurprisingly. Also I used a coffee filter on a case fan to prevent dust from entering.
if the calculator says 395w and i get a 550w power supply is that ok?
Andres Shamis yes
monobrow?!
He Sli's His Brows for extra power
Salmon PC what!?!? I thought he used crossfire!
Who agrees Linus should make another channel called "LoonusTekTips"

its funny... i heard cm was a terrible brand for psus
They've switched OEMs a couple of times so some of their older ones are questionable. They started using Seasonic though for newer series (like the many-times-mentioned V-series) and they've been very good according to reviews.
then not just get a seasonic?
Mega Know
Disagree... techquicke videos are meant to be simple for amateurs, but this one just was over-dumbed-down.

I had a 1KW Cooler Master PSU for 7 years running 12 houers a day. Favoritte PSU of all time.
Linus thanks for the calculator tip! I've serviced hundreds of pc's and just always recommended to buy a "branded" PSU. 12 years later decided to google it.
i am browsing through power supply while watching this.
yes, it worked coolermaster, i am buying a power supply FROM YOU
I'm having shutdowns with gtx 2 760's in SLI using a 600 watt PSU. I thought I could pull it off but it only worked fine for about a month. I learned the hard way that those PSU usage calculators don't always show the actual usage.
