    Great video Linus. Basically, semi-modular and fully-modular PS's are for enthusiasts who prioritize aesthetics and a seemingly minimal boost in airflow. Non-modular PS's are 100% ideal for a budget rig like the secondary one I just built

      The thing to note is they don't actually make PSU's, and the same goes for many others like Corsair and XFX. Seasonic made most of CM's recent units, such as the V series, and those have been fantastic.

    Thinking to get a 850 watt semi-modular PSU so I have some "future proofing" if I want to SLI in the future or just overclock my current system. It is a bit overkill for an i5 and a gtx 970 but I plan to upgrade in the near future and will want to keep as many components as possible possibly minus my case, gpu, and psu, and mobo etc.

    • @LiamoLuo
      @LiamoLuo 10 лет назад

      Geeker Its dead silent, I find the complaints are mainly from people putting it under load. Its not loud under load, its just louder than when under a low load since the fan doesn't even spin at low power, and spins up at high, obviously making it a stark contrast. But to be fair, in my rig atleast, when its under load the GPU far outweighs the PSU noise.

    I always choose the non modular version because there is some space between the power supply and the hard drive cage. You also can put all the cables under your hard drive or use the nzxt method and put a shield over the psu section. Why spending 10 to 20$ more for a modular power supply when you could hide your cables in the case?

    one thing linus did not mention about the "fully" modular power supplys is that it is easier to rout your cables from the component to the power supply so it speeds up installation.

    yeah i feel into the trap of my psu being to long as the connectors from my psu got in the way of the 2 120mm fans at the bottom of my case that i had to drill some new screw holes in the case so that i could move the fans forward a little bit

    All I wanted was to hear you talk about Transformers, so I could learn as fast as possible, how well they function as noise and surge protectors. I searched your channel for "transformers" and had to chew on this bug for 5 minutes without even so much as a mention of the word. but it's aight, If you make a video about transformers, please take note of the versions which are grounded, and ungrounded, and which I would want to use with a computer, or stereo. I'm concerned about preserving ground-references on my computer, and also high dynamic range in my stereo. I'm also interested to see how a transformer measures up against the technology ZeroSurge has in their surge protectors, which stores the surge and releases it slowly instead of shunting it like an MOV's, I'm wondering if transformers do the same sorta thing. Anyway, Thanks bud, I love your videos :)

    For personal preference. I would get a semi modular so that way I can keep my PC organized for one, and two if i need the wires I take out, I can just plug them back in. A non modular power supply is just to restricting as far as organization goes.

    Funny, the PSU, that V-series in his sponsor ad, was the same one I got as an RMA replacement from Cooler Master (because they apparently can't simply replace a fan in my original psu), and it failed on me within 3 DAYS! So much for "Top-of-the-Line"...

    Remember that video about anti-static and how you said the outside of the bag wasn't electrically resistant and it absorbed electricity and static? WELL... you need to do another video and go back on that, BECAUSE the inside of an anti-static bag is made out of the same dang material as the outside of the bag! Test it. Put up one of those things for testing for a static charge and you'll see the outside of the bag is totally resistant to electricity/static. SAME THING TO PEOPLE WHO THINK THE OUTSIDE OF THE BAG ABSORBS STATIC! Actually TEST it!

      @BadWordHater 10 лет назад +1

      LinusTechTips What I'm talking about Linus, is that it's safe to put the motherboard on it's antistatic bag. It won't fry it or anything. It's completely safe. Watch Carey Holzman's Mythbuster video if you don't believe me.

      Zap_12100 I wanted to continue the conversation, :( don't just drop me a couple of wikipedia articles and leave it at that. I mean I KNOW how they work. Come on, we can calmly have a discussion!

    • @xXDeltaXxwhotookit
      @xXDeltaXxwhotookit 10 лет назад

      The issue comes with powering on the motherboard while it is on the bag... something that many reviewers say is a bad thing to do. This is because the bag is "slightly conductive" - you risk shorting something out if you power it on.
      But, as always, it's advice - ignore it if you want... better to be cautious, than to potentially fry something.

      Welcome to the internet. You must be new here. You should educate yourself on the way that RUclips tracks views to understand why there are more likes than views. You can do this by typing in the search bar above "301 views" and learn the answer to your dilemma.

    • @jackjt8
      @jackjt8 10 лет назад

      Joshua's Recordings RUclips's view counter is, and never was broken. It's meant to work like that. If a video gets too many views too quickly RUclips needs to validate each view to make sure it's not a bot or anything. They just choose the cut off point to be 300. Meaning it locks at 301. Use google next time.

    The video that we really need is one explaining 12V rails and how many we really need. There are a lot of people out there who think that all PSUs must have at least 2 rails or they're crap and will die or blow up within a year and don't understand that, while having 2+ rails is usually good, it's not always worth the extra cost unless you are sure that you have the money to spare and that all of the rails are strong.

    The extra cost of a modular PSU is worth if you have a small case, like an mini itx build, or if you want the ultimate looks!
    I have a regular Coolermaster psu and my case has a plastic thing on the base to put the cables (it is a LianLi A71F)

    • @DavisSgt
      @DavisSgt 10 лет назад +1

      Actually modular pus are sometimes bad for mitx since the unit is longer and sometimes wont even allow any cable to be plugged since it is blocked

  • @clownkiller0629
    @clownkiller0629 10 лет назад

    I have an Corsair AX860i and love it, but one bad thing about full modular is if you have a Mini ITX because the cables need just a little extra room.....on the other hand I would never buy a Mini unless I wanted to build a small LAN rig

    There is one other benefit to modular style supplies. A lot of them have a set number of outputs, but you can pick the other end of the connector you need. For instance, if you only have SATA drives and nothing that uses a 4 pin molex, you can just use modular cables with SATA ends instead of adapters to convert molex pins to SATA style. It's not just about being clean, it's about being able to pick the connectors you need most.

    modular also helps with
    working on it, my non modular power supply cables are either too short or too long or make putting in new components in a pain, also I often have cables I don't need and don't have the ones I need, I am out of sata power cables but have a bunch of ones for older IDE equipment
