charcoal I think. Coloured pencils are great, but charcoal is much more closely linked to painting and I think is more diverse. You could water it down to give it an inky like effect, you can get really deep tones using charcoal powder, you could even get some muted browns depending on the type of charcoal you used. I think it's much more sculptural too, which is fun : ) loved the video too!
Colored pencil, no question. Wait...maybe charcoal.... nah, colored pencil, all day erry day! 😉 I love charcoal, but couldn't live without color forever.
The best art advice I ever got was from my A Level art teacher and it may seem obvious but you'd be surprised how many people (myself included) don't (didn't) do this. DRAW WHAT YOU SEE, NOT WHAT YOU THINK IS THERE. I do mostly portraits and when I was a teenager I used to wonder why i couldn't get the pieces to actually look like the person I was drawing. Turns out there was a very simple solution - draw what you actually SEE there, not (for example) "oh I know what eyes look like, let's put the eyes on". I look very close at my reference picture and instead of seeing an eye I see lines and shadows and light. This advice has helped me infinitely. I'm 34 now and draw realistic pencil portraits.
I agree! Although I'd say you can get even more value by studying things from life, as a photograph is 2D, and does not present us with 3 dimensions with all its goodies such as warped perspective and weird shapes.
Love the commentary about getting over that ‘artist block’ and completing the project anyway even though your not loving it in the moment. I struggle with this. It’s so important to just continue. Needed to hear that today. Thx Slew
This feels like i sign cause i was just painting and i thought it looked better at the beginning so i stopped, laid down and opened youtube. First thing i see is this video and your comment. Gonna go finish that mf now! Thanks, i needed that
How to get better at drawing in one hour: draw for an hour. There. You're one hour better at drawing. If the drawing is terrible you learned what not to do.
This! I was learning my body anatomy drawing yesterday and it would come out the way I didn't like then I saw a reference and figure it out😁 references are the best and try not to copy every detail.
Wise words here! Remember when you were a kid and someone was always telling you "practice makes perfect?" Awful words to hear because in childhood one minute is eternity, so practicing anything for thirty minutes was grueling. I think deep down we knew that practice was the answer and getting to "perfect" would take time. Hearing those words again stings just as bad now as it did back then! Love the green and blue self portraits, you've captured your essence quite well! Awesome content as always!
For me it was like I had more time to do it and since it was slowly over time it didnt feel like practice. I will say this its disheartening to loose what you got when you stop doing it for a year.
I prefer the phrase as "practice makes progress". Less pressure, more visible results in shorter time. The 10th circle is visible rounder than the 1st, even if not perfect yet.
As a kid I drew so much all the way up to like 15-16 then I got to a point where I just felt like challenged so much and always gave up cause I didn’t like what i was drawing but what’s crazy i never lost the love for it i was just always so self conscious that I’d never get better so i stopped all together. As of recent tho I really just decided to get back into it again and not give up when I’m going thru those emotional rollercoasters you talk about. So thank you for the motivation man. You earned a subscriber. Definitely not gonna give it up this time.
I actually never saw the shitty looking phase of an art piece as a barrier. I somehow started these big drawings/paintings without a lot of experience. And the first few hours in it always looked terrible, but in the end it turned out great, so i just trusted my guts and assumed that the shitty looking phase was part of the process.
Love this.I had to stop drawing about 10 yrs ago and since then I've always felt intimidated to get back into it but lately been feeling inspired just came across your page and honestly can't wait to get back to it!
I love how you said that it's essential to finish a piece, even if you go through 10 000 emotions while doing it. Reminds me of that saying from Jake Parker (creator of Inktober) : "Finish, not perfect". I try to follow that rule as much as I can too. :-)
First thing to note is learning to Draw takes Time! A lot of time to become great. I'm 2 years in and I still feel like I've a lot to learn still. I've invested hours every single day and I've seen tremendous improvements so far.
I like it here I'm staying. Thanks for inspiring me you came RIGHT ON TIME. I'm currently working on this huge piece and I was 2 seconds away from burning the whole thing up.
Its Artist block what you were describing around the 6 minute mark. I had it for a while to the point I wasn't drawing I had ideas I just never put it down in the sketch book
The FACT he is free-styling, stunnned me. I’m amazed at his ability to do so, because I on the other, rather than suck, i have a difficult time creating the exact shape of the person i am trying to free-style; I end of creating a sicker version of a random face that I might… i subscribed before hitting around 15 minutes into your video that, wow you’re good, i’m going to follow your work🎉
Ah the ugly stage and emotional drain, so glad you mentioned that, I think there are many out there that give up way too soon because of the emotional drain, the investment you have to put in. Awesome video Slew 😊
Rinse and repeat. It's a grind until you gather enough for your hand and your mind. Then, only the hand does it and the mind relaxes. Have no fear, the zone is here.
Oh my gosh! I thought it was just me and my inexperience causing the emotional rollercoaster in every piece. It is so helpful to hear it happens to every artist. Thank you so much for this video!
You just made me realise, I've never actually been bad at drawing people, all my mistakes were due to them having "incorrect human anatomy". Thanks so much
Awesome wisdom, thanks. The halfway mark frustration, the persistence to see it through every time, the practice and work ethics. And the quick demonstration of the process. Good stuff
Going through with your work and giving it your all even if you don't think it looks good is some wonderful advice that I'm gonna try to implement into my life.
Dude I've been following for a while and your production value has always been awesome, but you're reaching new heights that blow my freaking MIND! So so so satisfying to watch
I can relate on the rollercoaster ride of emotions during a painting/drawing process. Like, "Why the heck am I doing this?" 😆 But that part really helps us to grow as an artist. We have to learn how to overcome doubt, fear, procastination or whatever that keeps us from improving. Honestly, I haven't tried drawing with a colored pencil; I usually use a classic black lead pencil. Shifting to colored ones sounds like an interesting idea. 😄
Yo your art dope af. I would say you’re an inspiration but I haven’t drawn anything in weeks, though I’m sure you’re a true inspiration to others. But what u have done is reaffirmed the importance of fundamentals and I thank u 4 that cause I find myself trying to jump stages; thinking my talent stands over the actual work that needs to be put in.
I've found that my photorealistic drawings come out so much better if I start with the physical structure of the face/body - just the basic structure in 3d. It's easier to get highlights & shadows right if the curve of the cheek is already established (as an example). Then again, you're an amazing artist & don't need my advice! I'm not being sarcastic, I mean that!
great comment! Anatomy and basic shaping sure helps and is essential. I don't even draw regularly but i used to. Hoping videos will get me back to it haha
I haven't been the best at drawing from imagination but I can replicate an image by looking at it so I feel like if I practiced realism and understood how to do it I think I could be good at it
Love watching your process and development. Also love the Tischler wall lol... Try using a caliper for accuracy. I don't use mine often, but it helps when you feel like something just isn't right. It's useful for portraits of people or objects that are more symmetrical.
Very important message! I think every creative process has a sort of ugly phase in which it is hard to stay motivated. For me it helps to have a secondary project I can switch to for just a few minutes. Find what helps oneself is really important. What is that blue tape you are using? Seems like something that does not tear paper. I am searching for something like that for a while now (and fairly new to most thing painting =)
I learned for me and my "getting better" just to do a lot of lines like no pecticular shape and one of the lines will comfort the ey...I do alot of sketches just do doodle and scribble multiple lines for what I want to draw...it turned out I found my way to draw and design figures. I am far from beeing good...but I like the outcam more and more.
i love seeing artists finding ways to profit with their talent. my brother is an animator, but as a kid he was concerned how he would make money with art. he was able to land a great job with sony and never looked back. salute to you!
I actually have that artist block or something rn. It's frustrating when you can't draw something you want or the outcome is not what you expect. It happened to me, and still happening, when I'm switching medium from graphite arts to charcoal and from realistic drawing to more expressive drawing.
Hey have you tried those new matte graphite pencils? I forget what company put them out but they run from HB to 16B - something like that. Was thinking about picking up a set this weekend when I’m out.
Watching this was an enjoyable experience. Inspiring and fun. I would love to be able to do hyper-realistic portraits like these. You're a very talented young man. Blessings.
I didn’t realise that artists find it difficult to finish, that is so helpful. I used to throw out my unfinished paintings until a teacher made me finish one , I was amazed it was one of the best I ever did. I still find it hard but am not so quick to destroy them.
Something I've learned from dance is that training for a longterm big goal is hard work. The best way to stay focused is not to dwell on how long it takes, but instead, to make the process enjoyable and rewarding. Good luck! I hope you succeed (and you will if you stick with it.)
