    "XXX" holds a different term in Japanese. It just means "unknown" or "mystery", so it's essentially "Peach's Unknown Item". This fits with the localized "Peach's ???". Could it be something adult? Sure, possibility is there, but it could really be anything. Maybe Mario just doesn't know what mascara looks like, I mean, I sure have a hard time shopping for that for my Doordash orders lol

    I'd say the best thing in a mario game is the "Vibe Scepter" on Super Princess Peach. When the game ends and the scepter is lost, the ending sequence says that perhaps the scepter made its way to your house and is the reason your parents have been so happy lately.

    It does kind of seem like a stress test for a facial recognition algorithm. Maybe it would be difficult to pick the main subject of it with how close the kid is to the dude. Pure speculation of course, and seems like overkill for a game with a camera in a fixed position aimed at a chair. Has anyone tried feeding it to the game's camera input?

    • @sweetmoonpigeon7469
      @sweetmoonpigeon7469 2 года назад +135

      this is probably the most accurate, they were potentially considering using a wider lense and using facial recognition and then decided to just go with a more focused camera. I feel it is most likely that they just grabbed the first picture with multiple people in the frame that they found, say, from a news site.

    My guess is that the xxx item is supposed to be her underwear. That is a pretty typical trope in old anime or manga like dragonball. Her reaction of scolding Mario would match that item rather than something she was purely embarrassed about or try to hide. The moniker "toadstool's xxx" could easily refer to bra. Link's awakening did a similar joke in the original game where you had to retrieve the mermaid's bra which was changed to a necklace in later games.
    My guess is the underwear is behind the fireplace because there isn't a lot of furniture in the room and that is one of the few places to click on. Since it was a secret joke it makes sense it was hidden where most people wouldn't look. A fireplace is not a normal place to keep any item in real life anyways, underwear or not.

      Don't overestimate Japanese people's ability to be clueless about the rest of the world. There wasn't even Twitter back then. Some intern probably just searched for pictures of people and Google or Yahoo suggested one that was current events; also, the attack was more than a year prior to the launch of the game, it's quite possible to forget something if it wasn't blasted on repeat in their social network nor mainstream media.

    • @dkosmari

      It's quite possible a Japanese programmer wasn't that caught up on current events, and just used whatever image the search engine promoted as top result (precisely because it was current events.) Now while I don't understand it being a test image, I know there's examples of stuff being used as placeholders for like billboards or posters that get changed and replaced just because it's obvious it shouldn't be there post release and occasionally slip through cracks.

    SWANKY, I found something that people glossed over, a detail on a game that nobody would expect to find Mario lore…. Mario and rabbids on the boo world there are tables and bookshelves with shy guy masks and on some tables it shows how they are made, with a spell book and a piece of cloth with a mask, that is what is on the tables which I haven’t seen ANYONE noticed this.

  • @Tera_GX
    @Tera_GX 2 года назад +3

    My guess is that the image had been used as a profile picture cropped down to the right for a "carrying the team" look, and that's why the dev made the mental connection of using it to personally represent themself in the test. Back then we already had profile pictures and that type of humor.

    If I had to guess, it's the fact there's four separate, different looking people in the image, and they needed the camera to be able to identify a variety of faces. As for why they picked that image specifically?
    It's probable that whoever grabbed the image just wasn't thinking about it too hard. Japan still has its isolationist qualities rooted deep, so it's most likely the guy just didn't care very much about the whole thing. Which sounds cruel, but if this happened to a school in zambia a month ago, would *you* even remember that right now?
    So, yea; Dev probably saw the image, didn't really give the context much thought, and tested the camera with it. After all, not like anyone was supposed to see this ever anyways, right?

    I think i can come up with a reason why that particular image was used. For one, it could have been used to make it stand out as a placeholder. Most placeholder textures are intentionally jarring, or made so ridiculous or *ahem* explicit, so as to insure they aren't missed, and are replaced with their proper textures. This being a tragic and relevant event at the time would have made it stand out to the devs, so they would make sure it never cropped up during gameplay.
    additionally, i don't know how camera tests would work, but i'd assume the image could work as solving 2 problems. both containing a face that the camera would be able to recognize, as well as being shocking or eye catching enough to ensure it wasn't missed.

I can't remember what game it was, but it was a platformer. But then again they were Special Steps and things you had to accomplish while playing the game in order to unlock these images. For that last image, if that was a current event during development, they could have just searched "images of people" and that might have been one of the first results.
    Since Japan doesn't usually pay much attention to the outside world, and game devs are often on a time crunch, it's likely they just didn't know the source.

    The Mario RPG Peach's ??? Any one who is a Squaresoft/Squeenix fan would know that this is a running gag of Square putting a joke reference to adult/questionable material in it's games. Remember Tifa's orthopedic underwear In the Final Fantasy 7? In the japanese Final Fantasy 4 and later releases, you can find "smut" in the secret developers room. This was censored in the original NA release when the title was named Final Fantasy 2. Just like boing boing and bunny girls in Dragon Quest, it was kinda trendy to put that kind of stuff in classic JRPGs.
    Those examples are a little more blantant, but in the case of the "Peach's ???" It's pretty mild if you ask me, and the English translation of "XXX" to "???" makes it ambiguous enough that it could be anything. The ambiguity is what makes it clever! This is barely a controversy, this is no more shocking than an implied joke you'd see on SpongeBob SquarePants.
