A lot of people are commenting the same sentiments so I'm going to use yours as an example because it's not entirely parasocial. If you are reading this reply and find yourself feeling this way I suggest you watch the clip someone got of Bo smiling ear to ear in the audience at the Pheobe Bridgers concert while she covered "That funny feeling" it's extremely wholesome and will quell that gut reaction to... well... that funny feeling lol
from "make happy" he has consistently said he's in the service industry, he's just extremely overpaid. Bo likes doing this. I feel a lot like him especially lately as i try to make my own content or my bospirations. I created something I wanted to share but found myself panicking after putting it out to the world, and i'm terrified of the backlash/feedback/response. I'm so proud of what I made but I don't know if I could handle the response after just putting out something deeply personal and vulnerable and thats EXACTLY what he did in inside. He demonstrates this at the end with him being completey naked and terrified. I relate so much more to it now than I did back then. TL;DR - you want what you're afraid of, attention.
It's so strange when bo was considered like the young comedian I'm like three years older feels like a massive gap but it isn't because he references all the things I grew up with too but he also feels old and new. Inside and the outtakes is perfect.
Ahh him talking about how he doesn't want be known any more than he already is always makes me think "woops..." I also often think about how he says "Twitter makes me sick to my stomach, you know, it makes me wanna...yeah." :/
The thing is he does have something to talk about, and that is what he did for those 5 years to work on himself, improve and move past the panic attacks. Would love to hear about that.
I think the mistake people make, when leaving a comment regarding his feeling old, is that we correlate feeling old to how many years an individual has been alive and not what an individual has seen or experienced. Bo is in a position most of us will never be in. He's probably seen and experienced more than any average human could experience in TWO lifetimes, on top of the experiences every average human has in a lifetime (bad breakups, loss, periods of mental decline, etc). If the man feels old, I believe him. With him working in the industry, he's surrounded by the worst human kind has to offer short of politics and government. Does he have plenty of time left? Of course. But I doubt 95% of the people in this comment section have the mental fortitude to live this man's life and if he's tired, I get it.
he lived an extremely priveleged life in the suburbs of Boston, went to private schools, and had a loving supportive family. I'm not saying he hasn't suffered... just respectfully disagree with the sentiment you shared of him going through so much. he got successful young, was always respected and given a ton of opportunity, and lived his dream every day. most of his suffering came from his own wallowing (which he's the first to admit). he also still hasn't done therapy (based on another interview he did). I'm sorry, but if he feels old at 31 it's likely because he of what he's inflicted on himself.
@@itsbrassicabitch4439 If that's how you feel then that's your opinion, I guess. At the end of the day the only person that knows the ins and outs of what it's like to be Bo Burnham is Bo Burnham and anything you and I or anyone else has to say about it is wild speculation. Whether you grow up in the suburbs or in a trailer, both lives come with similar challenges, but also very unique challenges solely inherent to that upbringing. I personally choose to empathize even when sympathy isn't an option since suburban life wasn't my upbringing, but I highly doubt it was all sunshine and graceful walks like you're implying though. I could add more, but honestly, what's the point? We obviously hold different perceptions of life and I'm certainly not gonna waste time trying to change yours. With respect, of course. I think we both have better things to do.
This comment is such bs lol. He has not experienced as much as the average person in 2 lifetimes. Just because the average person isn't in the spotlight and hasn't put their struggles out publicly doesn't mean they're any less real. There's no need to agree to disagree, it's just a dumb statement. Mental illness is rife in the modern world and just because someone has been able to intelligently articulate it and connect to people - doesn't make their struggles any more or less valid.
He doesn’t want to be the next Belushi or Farley or every excellent dead to soon I can’t feel now comedian. They are the best and most tragic. That he shared his pain and stepped back. “We really need to talk about our cultural emissions”… yeah very much agree. Looking at the internet and (also traditional) media, in order to have a bit of a clearer perspective on it, you have to recognise what these media actually ARE. Because it’s annoying when ppl say “the internet is fucking us up, just stay away from it”, bc of course I cant do that successfully, I’ve been addicted to the internet since childhood, it is a part of my existing (negatively) AND it has taught me a lot of important information (positively) that I wouldn’t have access to in school, my social community and even in university. Everytime when you go on twt you have to realize, my political commentary here isn’t going to bring about actual change and help the conversation (this has been a relevant topic of discussion in my country for the past two weeks, on a national scale). This platform isn’t STRUCTURED for having a “productive” (I hate that word) or valuable discussion about things irl that need to get actualised like policies and rights but also our social behaviours and polarisation and a thing we like to call “fatsoensnormen”. Everytime you watch shitty tv (and I don’t mean just love island and shit like that I also mean mediocre talk shows about current things, having an intellectual or politician over to talk for 10 mins, but in the end it’s always just talk to make themselves look good) or you read the newspaper that never dares to ACTUALLY go far enough in questioning our realities, using viral tweets as estimates to see what the “public” thinks, you have to realise WHAT are they avoiding to discuss? Not even bc of conspiracy-like reasons, sometimes just because of pure disinterest?? Here in west Europe there is such a big disinterest in making things ACTUALLY better. Or ppl seem to lack the imagination to picture how sth totally different /could/ be better. [EDIT (take this one with a grain of salt as I don’t want my lack of knowledge about this to take away from my other points): They are addicted and fucked over by corporations and they can’t pay for gas anymore and they can’t pay for housing and they care about this but the big elephant in the room that causes all this, they never want to address because they lack the imagination (I guess? Or it’s sth else) and looking the other way is so fucking easy in this Western European country. Idk if this is post-ideology as I haven’t looked into that term enough and I’m too much of a dumb fuck to understand the criticisms of that term right this evening. I will say that I am not gonna BLAME traditional media for this as idk shit about why people are this way either, but I AM gonna be critical of how traditional media continues to develop and how easy they make it for ppl to ignore the actual issues.] I enjoy pure “entertainment” (not my best word choice but idk) like no other. Sometimes this actually provides me structure in my online exports, like when I’m partaking in fandom (and curate my timeline really well, this definitely isn’t the most typical fandom experience, I’d say) in a VERY specific way, twt can be fine as a platform actually. Not bc of twt’s design, but because of how a part of the fan community has organised and structured THEMSELVES in order to make the space not as toxic. In that same sense, ao3 is a decent fan platform, imo. Not to say that there isn’t toxic cultural emission happening there, but isn’t it funny how there IS a consensus that at least the stuff written there is better than on wattpad? I wonder why that is? (I don’t, i know why.) I would never call the things I’m fan of to be equally meaningless as a random show like love island or some dumb game show or watching tiktoks, don’t mean to be a dick, I’m just trying to be honest. But my point is not to say that enjoying brainless shit like that is such a bad thing that you shouldn’t be doing. It’s totally fine to need a distraction and I think that a lot of people will recognise it like that. They might say “I’ve had a stressful day at work, I just want to put my brain off and watch sth like this” and that reason is totally VALID. A distraction from your stress is understandable but don’t let the distraction excuse the reason as to why you were stressed in the first place! if the traditional media would focus a little more on not disctracting us from everything in society that is giving us a bad time but ACTUALLY give us information on what is causing us to be so stressed maybe there would be more people having some more sight on sth we could work towards to make things better. And if social media would stop distracting us by making us focus on everything we hate all the time we could use social platforms for good. But they never will bc these are money-making corporations that don’t care. That’s why we need traditional media to educate us about that and new reformed/revolutionised/actual “Social” media that are for and by the community to show us alternative and also educate and just function like the internet always should have been. [EDIT: take that “we need traditional media” also with a big grain of salt. They are equally fucked (if not more in certain ways) as internet media. My small tiny hope for public funded traditional media is probably naive.] Also that I used fandom experience as an example is fucked for real, pls I’m sorry don’t take that part too seriously This doesn’t make a lot of sense, will probably delete later, but I needed to get this of my chest
A lot of interesting thoughts. I remember a Hank Green video where he said it was natural we'd be bad at the whole social media experiment, it's still so new (especially as far as revolutionary social structures are concerned). We're essentially digital newborns. You allude to a healthy way of building online spaces and I hope that we do more consciously reflect on what that means and how to build it, because it would certainly help a lot of people's mental health a loooot (or at least be detrimental to it like it is now)
@@Dulcimer.MP3 yes it is natural indeed. I feel for your mental health you have to keep taking a step back and evaluate how you use it and how the platform urges you to use it. And for some people (like bo) that means not using it at all. Even though this reflecting hasn’t helped with my own “addiction”, at least for me reflecting on this helps to make all of the stimuli not too overwhelming. The discussion in my country I referenced in my comment is about how politicians and scientists have been raising awareness about the death threats and hate messages they receive (online and offline) bc of people who don’t feel heard about their struggles with corona and climate policies. It’s a follow up to a discussion that has been going on for about a year now, since in 2020 journalists started getting beaten up and harassed merely for reporting stuff. Someone said “while these threats are disgusting and wrong, it is visible online how desperate and unheard these people feel.” There is a terrorism and safety expert who remarked that it has been proven that voicing your anger (like on twt) will actually make you more angry. So people say they don’t feel heard, but them going to twt about it will not help and will add to the anger, resulting in ppl making threats in extreme cases. When she said this I thought, this makes sense, at least from how I can perceive it online myself. Then she said that, in end of year spirits, people should reflect on how they behave online. And about that I thought… this won’t help, though? Like will a person who sends death threats think to themselves “it’s Christmas, I guess they’re right maybe I should stop.” Twt also has these messages they put up whenever a tweet about someone goes viral saying “remember there is a person behind this video, don’t be too mean” (not literally, but sth in that vein) and there will still be thousands of comments and quote retweets going off at that person… idk so those are examples of why i keep thinking about how these conversations should happen in differently structured spaces. In this whole discussion in my country I have yet to see this being a made a point. One scientist affected said, “twt should do sth about the safety on their platform.” I would agree but users have been saying this forever directly to twitter’s face and twt doesn’t seem to care, a random scientist in a different country wont change that, like….. I do think the EU might be developing sth regarding this, I’m not sure what that’s all about though. again, I’m also very online so in general it becomes unclear to me whether I’m overdramatising these things in my head or not. Part of this reflection on my internet usage is that I keep being so confused about how I should approach things, talk about things in order to keep being fair and not make these online things too big. Making issues out of aspects of twt and insta and youtube can seem so unimportant. But then I see these scientists making it a national point of discussion and journalists writing about how our online attitude is used by politicians to ignore the actual criticisms on their policies and I’m confused all over again, like i guess it IS as important as I thought. Idk I’m in a rambling mood I guess
I actually found your comment pretty refreshing! It gives me hope when people are having these more sincere discussions online, especially since so many social media platforms are actively encouraging (as you said) quick/polarizing takes in order to get more engagement. I think in addition to traditional media (possibly) being one of the best platforms to talk about social media use, RUclips could be the next best one. I say this because it feels like at the very least, essays and educational content still have a better chance of thriving here. Of course there are PLENTY of problems with it, but it’s all we have at the moment y’know? Idk if I added anything to this. At the very least, I hope my replying a month later will work to boost your comment somehow.

I don't agree Burnham's take 3:11 that comedians should come up with something unless it's really worthy the audience attention, I been listening bill Burr's podcast for 5 years now and I found laughing at the podcast live genuine unscripted content than his stand ups, and he puts out 2 or 3 podcast episode a week rambling and ranting about everything and anything and it still make me laugh to this and it's super "worthy" of people's attention

With "inside" I feel like he is showing the cycle of depression, anxiety and how trauma effects humans very well! I've felt like he showed the cycle I go through as a traumatized person: FIRST - I am hopeful and excited for my project, life and daring something in my life ("I’ve decided to, uh, try to make a new special") SECOND - I start to question, if what I do is right and I start to get insecure (Should I be joking At a time like this? ♪) & fear of failing comes up.. THIRD - ..I start playing with thoughts of death ("if I could kill myself for a year. I would.") and not existing, because disappearing seems easier than going though, what I am just going through. FORTH - I see that without it (life, trauma, something to do) I will know even less of what to do with life, trauma and my time. So the thought "I gotta do this forever" arises. FIFTH - break down. SIXTH - getting a glimpse of hope (his smile @ the end) and repeating the cycle. Back to FIRST - I am hopeful and excited for my project, life...
I felt the same exact way! I struggle with Major Depression myself, and the whole special hit super close to home for me. When talking about it to other people, I've called special attention to "If I could kill myself for, like, a year? I would." like you did, as well as 'Shit' and 'That Funny Feeling.' The end credits song, 'Any Day Now' really struck me as well, even though it's tough to articulate why. Just something about the repetition of "It'll stop any day now..."
He’s taking time to reflect on his life and body of art-what would the value of his words be if he just adding filler. The irony of this in light of “Inside” - this interviewer did not see or understand the channeled masterpiece that was is and will always be. This comedian saved my life and maybe his own. And unfortunately, I'm part of the problem since I obsess over his work and what he stands for. Hopefully he's happy.
I will never get tired of Bo Burnham.
Me neither, he’s so talented and I absolutely love his work ❤️
It's so strange when bo was considered like the young comedian I'm like three years older feels like a massive gap but it isn't because he references all the things I grew up with too but he also feels old and new. Inside and the outtakes is perfect.
I look up to Bo Burnham so much. I hope he’s doing well these days.
We’re not tired of you yet, Bo
I’m blown away by Inside. The songs, the lyrics, the commentary are all just about as good as it gets.

Hey man
I think the mistake people make, when leaving a comment regarding his feeling old, is that we correlate feeling old to how many years an individual has been alive and not what an individual has seen or experienced.
It’s the most beautiful and important thing I have seen a performer or celeb of any kind do in my entire life. He has saved so many lives with Inside in my opinion - and his struggle shows that to struggle is the human condition. To acknowledge that and to share it, then bravely step off to heal and grow, that’s metamorphosis. And we ask why? Haha
@@itsbrassicabitch4439 You seem to entertain this common misbelief that you can list out the (apparently) positive things about a person's past and if it doesn't add up to a happy, balanced individual, it must be self inflicted and they deserve to be miserable ---------
Some obvious problems about this simplistic line of thinking are
1) human psychology is not as straightforward as you make it out to be and
2) life isn't a zero sum game you can just reduce to data points and
3) everyone is different (can't stress that one enough) and you literally _cannot_ know what it is like to be someone else nor what they're going through internally and
4) have you ever tried to push yourself to make something very good, personal and honest and then perform it to millions of people? That is not an easy feat. Oh, you haven't?
Would you like me to continue?

Having done this for literally half his life... it's probably the % measurement as opposed to the total number of years.

He’s so right about the thirstyness of fame.
Why do people think that they need to be heard when they don’t actually have something to say? It’s just them trying to maintain fame.
it's funny hearing him talk about something and think "oh, like that line etc", but not getting that because it was recorded before the release
it's also funny of him saying "im happy with my level of recognition, which is very minimal"... yea...
I feel that inside will be looked at as THE defining piece of artwork that captured the pandemic culture
as much as i love the things he brings out, i completely agree with what he’s saying. i would still love to see him live one day.
I will say that I am not gonna BLAME traditional media for this as idk shit about why people are this way either, but I AM gonna be critical of how traditional media continues to develop and how easy they make it for ppl to ignore the actual issues.]
I enjoy pure “entertainment” (not my best word choice but idk) like no other. (I don’t, i know why.)
I would never call the things I’m fan of to be equally meaningless as a random show like love island or some dumb game show or watching tiktoks, don’t mean to be a dick, I’m just trying to be honest.
My small tiny hope for public funded traditional media is probably naive.]
Also that I used fandom experience as an example is fucked for real, pls I’m sorry don’t take that part too seriously
This doesn’t make a lot of sense, will probably delete later, but I needed to get this of my chest
Good comment I think. Valuable words.
Like will a person who sends death threats think to themselves “it’s Christmas, I guess they’re right maybe I should stop.” Twt also has these messages they put up whenever a tweet about someone goes viral saying “remember there is a person behind this video, don’t be too mean” (not literally, but sth in that vein) and there will still be thousands of comments and quote retweets going off at that person…
idk so those are examples of why i keep thinking about how these conversations should happen in differently structured spaces.
Idk I’m in a rambling mood I guess
don't delete this, you worded a lot of things here beautifully and I want more people to see this
I actually found your comment pretty refreshing!

SECOND - I start to question, if what I do is right and I start to get insecure (Should I be joking At a time like this? ♪) & fear of failing comes up..
THIRD - ..I start playing with thoughts of death ("if I could kill myself for a year. I would.") and not existing, because disappearing seems easier than going though, what I am just going through.
FORTH - I see that without it (life, trauma, something to do) I will know even less of what to do with life, trauma and my time. So the thought "I gotta do this forever" arises.
FIFTH - break down.
SIXTH - getting a glimpse of hope (his smile @ the end) and repeating the cycle. Back to
FIRST - I am hopeful and excited for my project, life...
