    The difference between an eighth grader and Bo Burnham is that, unlike Bo, the eighth grader can fit her hand inside a Pringle can.

    • @blownspeakersss
      @blownspeakersss 6 лет назад +33

      It's not that powerful of an observation. We (as in men, which is what I believe Bo meant) certainly can see ourselves through female characters--and we do. Tons of books and movies are written with female protagonists. We have no trouble feeling what they feel. But naturally men will tend to see themselves more closely in male characters, and women will tend to see themselves more closely in female characters.

      @@blownspeakersss Meh, as a woman, I grew up reading more books with male protagonists than female protagonists, and it has always been natural and normal to me to identify across gender divides. Whereas I don't think men are socialized to read/play/identify with female protagonists in their books/games/movies. There simply aren't as many. Furthermore, most of the books kids are required to read in school are about men. Finally, no one bats an eye if a girl reads a book about a male protagonist, whereas people think it's weird if a boy reads a book about a female protagonist. So I do think it was a powerful observation on Burnham's part, and I think that women are raised to identify with men through popular media far more than men are raised to identify with women through that same media.

    Something that older people don't recognize about Bo is how much that he respects his audience, and not in the traditional sense that we usually understand
    He is not only proud to have a younger group of people be fans of his work, but he also sees them as more than just this group of kids. Yet also, he acknowledges their experiences as youth. He recognizes these eighth graders as complex people whose voices are just as interesting and just as important.

I felt for her, I wanted to reach out and hug her for most of the movie and I’ve never felt like it was so easy to empathize with a character. It’s also amazing to see so much of yourself while watching an experience that is inherently not your own.. but I guess that sort of encapsulates the definition of empathy. The movie does a fantastic job of bridging that gap though.

      8th grade is a breeze as long as you stay down the right path.Ignore the "cool kids" eventually those are the people in society that parents tell their kids look at that person you don't want to be like them.
