Gaining Ground in the Pacific: The US Army’s Role in Campaigning to Deter China

  • Pentagon leaders largely view the Indo-Pacific through an air and maritime lens. But in the region, armies are the dominant military branch in national security priorities and doctrine. This gives the United States Army an opportunity to build relationships with its counterparts across the Indo-Pacific and establish security infrastructure for use in future conflicts. The resilience these “interior lines” provide could be decisive in deterring aggression.
Join Hudson Senior Fellows Bryan Clark and Dan Patt for a discussion with General Charles A. Flynn, commanding general of the US Army, Pacific, about the Army’s changing role in the region and how long-term campaigning can help the US compete with and deter China.

Although this is above the Generals pay grade, what would be a better deterrent than basing a coalition of 100,000+ troops in Taiwan now?

Nukes. Taiwan has missiles that can reach Beijing. Help Taiwan develop a dozen nuclear warheads. The minute Chinese missiles start firing and ships leave port for Taiwan, Taiwan can announce to Beijing: Stop now, or Beijing and Shanghai will become two piles of burning glasses within an hour.

@@plowe6751What are you on my mate?? Korean War started when North Korea had the bright idea of invading South Korea.
The Chinese community party is no different from your typical bully, they like to take advantage of those they perceive to be weak and are afraid of real power.
In 1996 China started shooting missiles around Taiwan, The US sent a carrier battle group there and China backed down and shut up.
By your logic that would have triggered a full-scale military conflict between the US and China.

The best defense against communist authoritarian dictatorship is to strengthen democracies from corrupting influences and nepotism. It takes an active and concerted effort of the people, to ensure that our democratically elected politicians are truly representing our interests.
We must also address what hostile communist countries are doing, both domestically and abroad. Democratic Nations must stand together against their lawlessness in defense of global security, human rights, and enforce International Law.

    *THE EIGHT NOBLE ENDEAVORS*
Every freedom loving country needs people willing to form Grassroots Organizations/Movements.
    1) To ensure that our politicians aren't putting the interests of the CCP above our own countries.
    2) To support human rights, and preserve freedom & democracy around the world; from the CCP-PLA's undue influences and harm.
    3) To elect politicians who will be on the right side of history.
    4) To develop tough on China legislation.
    5) To expose and weed out CCP corruption abroad.
    6) To foster the fraternity of NATO Nations.
    7) To stop China stealing land and resources
    8) ....anything else necessary.
*This is a conversation we all need to be having with each other.*

One cannot both believe in "deterrence" and also accept Clausewitz's Chapter One, first page, CAPITAL LETTER definition of "War" as only the kinetic engagement of "the enemy". These deterrence discussions remind us that the roots of kinetic operations are Always Ready, yet the political aims of war are achievable without the necessity or the sufficiency for kinetic operations. This counter-Clausewitzian premise, suggests that an actor's political will picks the enemy, wittingly or unwittingly, by the choice of contested political objectives (generally, but not necessarily, resources) that exist even if there is no Kinetic Military Apparatus to support that political will. Accepting this reality highlights two key takeaways. One, with deep deep irony, War is defined strictly politically - not kinetically. War exists between two actors by the mere intent to contest an objective and not, as Clausewitz claims, by the incidental fact there has been a kinetic engagement! Two, it is therefore possible to achieve a "Military Victory" without a kinetic engagement! If I'm wrong, there is absolutely no need for the CIA, the NSA or any other massive Strategic Level organizations that are the hallmark of our American Military. Would Clausewitz accept the very idea of the "Cold War"? In Grunt-Speak he is a no-go at that station. Clausewitz wastes his entire book "On War" trying to get around the fact he started his argument with a faulty premise.
This redefinition of War as strictly political also provides ample room to theorize (to explain) the actions of small groups and individuals within an "Strategic Framework". The "Strategic Corporal" will never exist in a uniformed military; however, such "Strategic Corporals" exist in abundance in failed states and states with weak national police forces. If said corporals start making too much trouble, then it becomes necessary for strong states to take actions in order to protect their own citizens. (The '"Evil Genius" is a stock trope.) In fact, this idea that war is defined in human-set political terms suggest a unified theory of conflict that is applicable to both violent criminals inside a state and violent criminal outside the state. There is always a robust legal framework in either case all that is in question is to which organization the law assigns the potential for kinetic engagement. Strong states have many such layered choices, weak states have next to none! Military history is really about understanding the legal and technolgical evolution of these varied and multi-faceted organizations through time not about the subsequent battles these organizations may have engaged in.
Maybe it's just me who finds these Beltway deterrence discussions so at odds with the Strategy Videos posted by the Army War College. If anyone asks, I'm just an old member of the E4 Mafia with some interest in Asia.

Such dialogues confound me in the way they talk of open war with China vis a vis Taiwan as a deterent when the Ukraine war has proven that the US considers direct action against Russia as WW3. Never say never but China got the message as is getting its triad ready.
