Compact trucks need to come back. Not a lot of personal use with full size trucks if all you need is a smaller one. Everyone can thank the EPA for doing away with them, not to mention many base models of vehicles cost 5x more than older models. The manufacturers make their money back through parts. Anyone who has owned a s10, ranger, or tacoma knows that feeling of having a utility vehicle for hauling light loads and pulling a trailer for lawnmowing equipment, etc.
It’s sad because some cheaper trucks came out, but not for North America. A lot has to do with the safety and regulation, but they can make a truck that’s up to code a less money, it I feel it’s been very greedy. They say it won’t sell and blah blah, it will, some just need a truck that can do the work with out it being big and everything… etc etc. It’s sad.
Great point. I have a 6 year old Honda Civic as my daily commuter, and a 2001 Chevy truck I’ve had forever for around town and Home Depot runs etc. The amount of $70,000+ 4 door trucks that get terrible gas mileage I see everyday making 100 mile round trips without carpooling is so wasteful in SO many ways. I’d like to think people were smarter with their money but what am I thinking…. Small sub $30,000 cars that get 30+ mpg make so much sense. Cheap to insure, cheap to own, cheap to drive. I’d love to see the low cost compact truck market come back too. I kinda want one. Then maybe sell my old Chevy.
I lived in Okinawa for 3 years while in the Marines. I had one of these and a Daihatsu atri van. I miss the tiny vehicles. I might have to get one again.
Here in Japan the most popular model of K truck is the Subaru Sambar flatbed version. All k trucks are virtually the same but for actual work duties, the sanbar is the most reliable.
Sambar is rear-engine (behind the axle) so it's slightly more accessible since you can get at it both through the bed and by folding down the rear bumper, and it's a 4 cyl instead of a 3. The mid-engine ones are cool too though. I'd never buy one with the front engine.
If you get one from South Korea the steering wheel will be on the correct side of the vehicle for right-side-of-the-road drive countries, like the US. They have been variously badged as Daewoo or GM Labo trucks (or Damas vans, if you like your payload enclosed). Both designs recently purchased by JJ Motors for conversion to an electric model currently being sold here; can't wait to swap my LPG model for an electric one.
The US Congress in their "wisdom of corruption" made a law that unless a truck is manufactured in the United States we can't own it without massive extra fees and costs unless it's under the 25-year law... It's because Japan and these Kei Cass trucks would put GM Ford & Dodge out of business. I got a 1993 Suzuki Carry that has zero rust and had 64,000 original miles on it. (98k km
I've been really dreaming of getting a Kei Truck. Your videos have been so helpful, and insightful. I really want a Subaru Sambar, but your videos are making me want an Acty
I bought a '94 Suzuki Carry and fancied that I would use it for work. About 12 months I after I got it I painted it up Tonka style and now it looks so nice, it's too nice for work. Looking to get another mini truck for work. You kind of have to decide if it's going to be a show piece or a work piece.
I purchased a 1996 4WD Daihatsu Hijet mini truck from a Japanese auction site. I paid $265, plus $1935 to ship it to the eastern seaboard of the United States. The US has a 25% protectionist import tariff on light trucks (the Chicken Tax) but I only paid 25% of $265 so it wasn't too bad. My state and local taxes were based on the $265 commercial invoice price as well, so I paid $15 for a one time inspection (basically checking paperwork to see if it's stolen) and less than $45 for taxes and registration for the next year and a half. The truck is not in bad shape considering it was a Japanese farm truck. I'm catching up on maintenance while doing some upgrades. I have almost $6000 in it now and after new tires, 2" lift kit with progressive springs, a Monstaliner truck bed liner paint job inside and out and a double DIN Android stereo with a backup camera I'll probably be around US$8000. Getting insurance in the US is a bit of a pain but I'm paying around $400 per year for the Hijet. I get 31 MPG in the Hijet and I drive it wound out trying to accelerate with in town traffic. Not bad for a 4WD pickup truck. 6:45 - Importing into the US, the only time car parts can be placed in the exported vehicle is if the vehicle is shipped in a shipping container, which is very expensive. For a RORO (roll on, roll off), only the bare vehicle can be shipped.
@@sigmamale4147 - The Hijet is way better than any US truck I could have bought for $10,000. I love that little truck. Everyone who sees it loves it. It's cute, but also very practical.
I'm an Expat living in Japan. These mini trucks and cars have their place over here. I can understand having one back in the UK as there are handy and get good mileage. One thing that nobody ever talks about is the driver size. I am 183 cm tall, and you really need to be 175 or under to be able to drive this comfortably. I bought a 94 Daihatsu, Hijet, with 4wd, air conditioning, and a scissors lift dump, eight years ago. I bought it to push a snow plow. For that purpose it made more sense than the ATVs and UTVs folks use. Heater and a closed cab were the clincher on that. All in, with home made bumpers to carry the plow, and act as outriggers when I use the scissors lift as a work platform. And three sets of tires, and $3500 for an electro/hydraulic snow plow, I’m at $13,000. If I buy regular spark plugs at the parts house, and the plug wire set for a six cylinder, and change teh ends a bit, I can do a tune up for around $100. Downside for most folks will be not having enough mechanical knowledge to do their own work, which will drive the cost with Japanese parts upto around $300.
Ah, I remember the days when a diesel 4x4 Hijet could be had for $3000. No way I'd pay today's ridiculous prices for one considering I just bought a lightly used, 2 owner Case Unimog 406 with new tires for $15k.
A lot of states like Georgia wont allow their people to register and drive these on the roads... I live in Florida and drive it everywhere! Its perfect for running to Home Depot or Lowes and getting supplies and small enough that i can drive the truck all the way around my house to exactly where i want & need to off load
My wife and I go to Greece for three months in the summer every year, and next year I want to buy a inexpensive-ish "new" vehicle. I just fell in love with the new Honda kei vans. In Japan they sell for 8300 American dollars, and I would love to get one in the States, but they don't allow them here unless they are 25 years and old. Do you have any idea whether they can import them in the EU? They would be perfect for my wife and me, and for the narrow roads on the Greek island.
The Daihatsu 80 series was manufactured in Italy by Piaggio, as the Porter through 2019 or 2020. They had the distinct advantage, of being able to have engine selections not available in the JDM Daihatsu Hijet version, with gas and diesel versions of upto 1500cc. That would be my look for in Greece. I think several of the Japanese manufacturers had similar arrangements with EU partners for the EU Market. You may find information on Wikipedia by looking for a JDM truck, and then following a link to the European version.
My son sent me a picture of one he saw today, in Texas. He talked to the owner and they really liked it saying it had a 10 gallon tank, and got about 50 miles to the gallon. He is thinking about trying to get one for himself. I saw where Georgia says that they do not meet U.S. safety standards, and will not allow them to be registered for use in their State, so the people that have them are not allowed to drive them. Owners are trying to get lawyers, and get a ruling in the courts. I remember when Volkswagon beetles use to get pushed around on the roads when meeting or being passed by big trucks and wonder if these would have the same problem.
You never really got into the pro's and cons of the engine position and maintenance specifics. How hard is it to remove the bed? Is it easier to work on the motor for the Cab-over trucks?

I've been considering Honda or Suzuki, so it seems I'm at the right place. Being across the pond from the UK. ( New England) may be a good thing also. I have to find out if I can register , the one I decide on , for driving on the road. Also I was wondering if they have a manual or hydraulic dump body.
Keep up the Great Work

Not sure why car makers refuse to include these options. That's why I drive an 81 Toyota 3/4 ton 4 cylinder. I frequently run it out of gas because I forget it uses fuel at all.
I love Japanese trucks! They make great vehicles and I think I want to get one! I just need to learn how to do your own maintenance (maybe I’ll watch another video 😉❤) anyway, thanks for the great video and I love the content!
I’m really looking for a small pick-up truck but not this small. It’s a safety issue specially in US where they really build “BIG”pick-up trucks.
Hello just got myself Suzuki carry n reg 12000 miles mint condition wax oiled but looking for some alloy wheels but it seems like amine field to get right size . I don’t think we live far apart looking at your videos
Where was it you got the insurance price from? I've been looking around to get UK insurance quotes and been struggling to find anyone who will even recognise half the license plates I put in. Those that do think it's 1.3L not 650cc in a Hijet.
ive always been looking for a mini truck but never had the money for one but one day ill get one
I want one for my first car, for one who really has one? Two they’re really small and easy to drive and three really good gas mileage so cheap to run plus it’s a truck
This video just solidifies me getting a kei truck
I hear the replacement parts are (very)hard to find, specially the tires.
Dang I was hoping this video was for the US. I would love one of those trucks
There are plenty of places in the states that sell Keis.
@@V340E419 after some research I found only one company in the US East coast that sell Keis and seems legitimate, HVNY Imports. I did not know that any existed, thanks!
Good to find a UK based review. How do you find it cruising at 60?
60 is no issue. Did 60 for 9 hours in a day last summer and it was fine. My back was broken, but the truck handled it well 😅
@@lookship Haha nice. I’ve been looking at getting one for about 5 years and I might now pull the trigger. Pretty used to cruising below 70 at the moment in a JB74 Jimny. Are the Acty and Sambar pretty much the same thing? Both engines are towards the back?
Where did you get the bed headache rack, and the tailgate spoiler?
Hoping to pick one up one day soon
Question..... Do you know can they be sent to Thailand And do they make this truck in left and right hand drive....
I think it’s worth the money and it looks cool
I have no need for a truck/van YET.. but GOD I WANT ONE!!!
Just purchased my own Kei truck!!
Nice!!
From where?
Love this, being different is a win win
really useful and neat vehicles!
Hello thanks for the info, wow mpg etc.
I can't lie, I am in the boat of people who really want one - it's just not the best for a daily car... Maybe I will have to get an actual kei van or car, unfortunately for me though, being 18, insurance is a big problem, quotes looked either impossible or sort of £2-3k+
Looks great, can you get a canopy with frames for the tray ?
You can. A company in Japan fabricates a few different frames. Would be much cheaper to make one/have one made overe here though.
well made video! Thank you!
wish you all the best with your channel

Hola, Osman desde Panamá City, podrías indicarme en que página podría yo averiguar para traer uno de esos vehículos a mi país en versión 4wd.
Not many states allow these things to be on the road and if you over 6 foot you're screwed
