That's different from decelerating, which is the person slowing down. Accelerating downwards means that the person is falling farther each second in the negative direction. That's why gravity is -9.8m/s. The negative means going down, not slowing down.

frank ma the formula you quote is incorrect. It is supposed to be V=Vo+at
