    Hi everyone, check out my new video, it is my best and proudest work to date. I spend over 60 hours editing it and 6 months filming it. It would mean a lot if you gave quick watch when you have a second free. Cheers! ruclips.net/video/t5_qFOyV_lY/видео.html

    I love how moved you are by it. I went for 3 days in 1999 and stayed for 5. Next month, after 20 years, I'm taking my husband to experience it with me again. Forty-eight countries so far, and I still say that Varanasi is the most fascinating place I've ever seen.

    "A goat wearing a jersey on a red couch. That is India in a nutshell." Brilliant observation. After seven months living here, I have to agree. India is about happening upon such unexpected scenes on a daily basis ---pairings that are odd, often humorous, sometimes tragic and---in the case of what you saw--previously unimaginable.

    The experience at Ganga ghats is surreal, you captured the theme with such emotions where even natgeo & discovery crew fail by miles.
    I visited these ghats 1 month after my near death experience and as much life changing my NDE was, the experience of seeing this ritual early morning sent shivers down my spine, tears flew like river though there was no emotion attached to the tears, at that very place I was so transformed that the day seems like my new birthday, infact that whole 1 month period seemed like some transition phase of my soul, the final step was witnessing the burning ritual and cracking of the skull to liberate the soul from body.

    Nick, Varanasi is overwhelming to most people. It is considered to be the most holy place for Hindus. River Ganges is revered as God and anyone who dies in this holy city and cremated (not burnt) on the banks of the Ganges is believed to attain salvation (Moksha in Sanskrit).
    Cremation is believed to be most sacred way of paying obeisance to a dead person. By cremating a body, the body returns back to nature from where it comes from. Scientifically, cremating a body would help avoids transmission of viruses and bacteria from a dead person to other organisms and prevents contamination of the soil. Further, it does away with scavengers consuming the human body (if not properly berried), which would mean disrespect to the departed person.
    The festivity that happens on the banks of river Ganga in the evenings is known as Arti, which is a ritual thanking the river for the Goodness that ahs been bestowed to the community at large. Hope this gives a perspective of the scene there.

    Hey Nick ! This was the best vlog ever ! Varanasi is so close to my heart and soul I almost had a few tears watching those scenes when you were lighting the lamp ( it's my favourite thing to do) while listening to the sacred mantras in the background and when I saw the bodies getting burnt. Women are mostly prohibited in the burning ghats but I used to sit there and meditate and just observe those flames 🔥 it was magical and sure you can't put them in words the emotions you experience , it's just beyond comprehension :) I have been to Varanasi three times and have always come back transformed! It is surely a place of transformation. It's like watching yin and yang together in one place one time. It's funny and also pretty emotional. I was a little sad though hearing you didn't take a dip in the Ganges on your birthday because wow what a gift it would have been to your spirit. But sure I can understand your worry about the hygiene of Ganges. I can tell you that I worried too but one day I just let go of all my inhibitions and immersed myself in the holy Ganga and felt the mystical power of her. She is like a mother , very nurturing, loving, healing and protecting ...I realised no matter how much people pollute it ,they certainly can't pollute her power. In Rishikesh I could bathe everyday in Ganges , the Ganga there is so pure and green. Hopefully you will get to visit it next time. Cheers again and god bless your journeys mate. Would be lovely to cross paths with you one day :)

      Again, I am blown away by your comment. Thank you. Yes Varanasi is a truly remarkable place and a must for everyone on this planet to visit at least once in their lifetime if they can. I'm sure you're right about going for the swim. I will have to commit to the dip on my next trip to Varanasi for sure! I will also add Rishikesh to my list :) Cheers again and i'm sure we will catch up in India in the future if we are both their at the same time. Take Care!

    This Video did all the justice to Varanasi. Kaashi, as we in India call it, is the spiritual capital of india and is a city of magic, of the grandeur of Hinduism and you captured it the best way. That ride down the holy ganges has always been mesmerizing.
    The way you captured that lighting the diya, the ganges aarti was truly incredible.
    I have seen a lot of videos on Varanasi, but the way you felt and explained that, especially the part after you saw and experienced those holy piers of dead bodies, how you explained it was something I really liked.
    Thanks for visiting and we hope to have someone like you travel more often here. You might inspire a lot of Indians to actually visit Varanasi.

    India is surreal for a lot of us. An amazing experience and a culture shock that’s so extreme. I travelled around India for three months and was somewhat prepared as it was part of my studies beforehand, but it truly is incomparable. Varanasi and Amritsar were my favourite places to visit as well as Kolkata because of the international energy - lots of backpackers and volunteers from all over the world. I was really hoping to be able to visit Darjeeling though but there wasn’t enough time

    Namaste! Just stumbled across your vid, really good brings Varanasi to life, particularly a boat trip on the Ganga! I fell for Varanasi as a young backpacker in 1991 but it was at the end of my India travels so I only had a week or so there. In 1993 I returned to Varanasi and really wanted to get to know the city so stayed there for 10 months. Really learnt a lot, walked hundreds of km's through the back streets and lane ways and explored every nook and cranny I could find. Now, 24 years later I have just booked a flight to go back to Varanasi which will be my first stop as part of a bigger India trip, wonder how the changes are going to be. By the way, even 24 years ago the Ganga wasn't too clean, but if you crossed to the far bank it was lovely and clear and a good place for a swim. Plenty of gharial (crocodiles) and gangetic dolphins to be seen then too, I hope they are still around. Modi has promised as an election pledge to clean up the Ganges (and Varanasi), I wonder if he is successful with that? Happy travels.

    • @IndigoTraveller
      @IndigoTraveller  7 лет назад +1

      Namaste! Thank you. The back streets of Varanasi are still amazing but I would be interested to hear from you on how much the place has changed as a whole. Let me know if you can. And wow, dolphins and crocodiles, I never knew about these but now I wish I had. Another excuse for me to return I guess. Not sure if Modi has followed through with that plan or not but he was actually in Varanasi when I was there as you saw in the video so it could be a possibility that he has started some kind of cleaning program. Thanks again for sharing and all the best for your upcoming trip! Nick

    1000 years old silk machines? Do you really believe that? Probably tell the people the silk fabric is hand made. And do you tip these people to film them like the snake charmer. But like your vlogs a lot.

    Merry Christmas and happy new year Nick. Do visit Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Sikkim and Meghalaya if you want to see totally different India. It has been recently opened to foreigners and there is almost no vlogs on these places.

    I think Varanasi, along with Mecca, Jerusalem and Rome is one of the top religious places in the whole world.

    Hey Buddy, How do you navigate on Indian roads to roam and reach to your destinations, because Indian roads are complex, congested, and more like cobwebs?

    • @IndigoTraveller
      @IndigoTraveller  7 лет назад +1

      Hey mate, yes it can sometimes be a challenge but I always try to remember in which way I came and normally keep a business card of my accommodation etc. so if I get lost I can just ask someone or use google maps if necessary. Cheers :)
