I am a Cape Cod native, so I know the whole story of Black Sam. I have seen his treasure, even touched it, firsthand. Thanks for making my day by doing this.
I am also from the Cape year round and have been to the Whydah Museum multiple times but i dont remember them saying how deeply involved Black Sam Bellamy was with all these Famous Pirates
I've been to the museum where they have the artifacts recovered from his wreck preserved! It's really quite fascinating, I got to see the bell up close and all the personal items on display. It was once in Wellfleet, but it is now in Hyannis, Massachusetts, for any who are curious.
I really like your channels and how they've morphed from 1 to many. You do a great job, I watch these with my 11 year old son and he's quickly becoming an astute historian. Thank you for the work you do
I wish this stuff existed when I was young. (Only 31 but this age of quality youtube is still young). Cheers to your son and I hope the love of history sticks around!
My favorite most underrated pirate ever! I’ve learned so much about him already and you still find little bits of info I didn’t know. I don’t know how you do it Simon.
I have a copy of "The Pirate's who's who." Highly recommend for anyone interested in the topic. How about Capt.Eric"Winkle"Brown RN. as a future episode. Flew more different military aircraft types than anyone has or ever will. He was present at the Nurenberg rallies and after the war interogated Nazi war criminals before their trials. And way more. Ta.
I'm always impressed that Simon is able to present so many channels with no legs. Its amazing that a man with no legs can front so many youtube and tictok channels. Well done Simon.
Loved hearing this take on a local classic. Every Cape codder knows of the wreck of the Whidah . We all took field trips to the museum to touch real life pirate treasure, and see a pirate entombed in rust
I am related to Maria Hallett. My father's family is from Barnstable and has lived there since 1627. At one time the town of Barnstable produced most of the ships in the British Royal Navy making it an incredibly important location during the years preceding the American Revolution. The strategic value cannot be overstated. Specifically this was in the village of Centerville. There is almost no sign of this activity these days as the ship building coastline is now a resort area. Barnstable is the town where the village of Hyannisport is located famous for being president Kennedy's summer home.
Cheers, Simon, to another great video! I've always been fascinated by pirates, and wonder if you'd cover more of them, like Black Bart Roberts, Henry Morgan, or Thomas Tew. I even saw an exhibit called "Real Pirates" at the Union Terminal years back, which had the remnants of the Whydah as its centerpiece. It was incredible.
Black Sam's life story would make for a neat movie. Also, the wreck of the Whydah Gally really did shed some light on the lives of pirates at the time.
Back when the exhibit toured around the US, I got to portray Quartermaster Richard Noland when Real Pirates was at the Milwaukee Public Museum. Best job I have ever had in my life.
Maria Hallet also known as " The Witch of Wellfleet" Her father did not like Black Sam and wouldnt let them marry. If he had histroy may have turned out different!
Please make a video about Aryabhata. A few of his achievements (in 476 AD): 1) Major contributions to trig/geometry 2) created the concept of zero 3) calculated pie 4) first to explain moon and planets shine due to reflected sunlight 5) explained celestial bodies moved due to earth rotation and sun was center of solar system
The broadcaster states that bones recovered in 2018 were DNA compared to that of a living relative. Just to clarify, there are no living male descendants of Samuel or siblings with whom to compare. Therefore, the person used as a DNA sample in England could not provide a match. I am aware of the Bellamy used for the sample and can categorically say their family lines do not trace back to Hittisleigh Devon. You would need a confirmed male descendant of Sam whose YDNA could be compared to the bones. This exercise was quite frankly a non-starter, commercially driven, flawed and misleading.
My cousins and I have traced Bellamy back to pre 1066 Normandy (Village of Belle Ami'), there is an error in the lineage between the late 1500s and the early 1700s, my branch can trace back to 1630s and Barbados , there's a missing person
16:26 Richard Nolan?!?!? Characters named Bellamy and Noland BOTH are introduced at Jaya, at the start of the Skypeia Arc in “One Piece”! I know Oda likes to use the names of famous pirates 🏴☠️ for secondary characters, BUT to have TWO that are connected to each other in real life be introduced in the same arc?!?! Man, this is awesome 🤩
Maria was banished and lived on the land which is Wellfleet now. I live in Massachusetts and grew up on the cape every summer. You can see the pieces that were found from Sam’s ship which is now in Hyannis mass
Do one on Dutch Pirates... they ruiled the high seas, many shipterms to this day descend from Dutch..like Boss and Kielhauling... Roche de Brasil is said to be a notorious cruel pirate, Piet Heijn took the Spanish silverfleet...
Sam Bellamy probably escaped death and went on to live an ordinary life in a quiet village with his Alice. That's the story until we find that man's bones!
Please do a video on Major John Wesley Powell. He served in the Union Army in the Civil war and despite losing most of his right arm at the battle of Shiloh, he took on the mission to complete the first full descent of the Green and Colorado River from Wyoming and through the Grand Canyon in 1869. It was a miserable journey full of drama and intrigue. It's right up your alley!
I got to see the traveling exhibit of the Whydah Galley, and it was one of the most exciting exhibits I've ever seen at a museum. This exhibit is why I clicked on this video so quickly.
Did you all know that the wreck of The Wydah, is one of the only pirate shipwrecks to be officially identified. Which means. Either a lot of other ships have never been found, or no one recorded the find. Which is extremely hard to believe for the latter.
