@Stephen braden Tortuga is a tiny island off the coast of Hispaniola that was so insignificant that the Spanish never bothered to seriously settle it or even have a permanent military presence there. Pirates build the entire island up from the ground and it was the centre of piracy for over 4 decades. It's the founding place of the Brethren of the Coast and saw the cooperation between English, French, Dutch, German, and African pirates. Nassau was already settled for over a half a century and pirates just moved in after the French and Spanish destroyed the local fort, making it defenceless. And after only a decade they were pushed out again. Literally every romanticised thing about pirates you know comes from Tortuga, the only major thing Nassau gave us was the pirate republic of Nassau itself.
@@asuka7309 Ummmmm wow I thought that Tortuga was just a made up place for a movie. Thanks for setting that straight. I'll be doing some reading up on it now.
Tortuga's name comes from the Spanish word for turtle. Turtles were invaluable as food for shipwrecked sailors, privateers and pirates. There are two islands bearing this name. The one that is famous is Tortuga, just above Haïti's Port-de-Paix (Port of peace). Then there's the Isla de la Tortuga just above Venezuela and some islands dubbed 'dry tortugas' because they had turtles but no fresh water.

Jack Rackham was the best part of Black Sails btw (among what was already a masterpiece of television), so really looking forward to learn more about the real historic man behind him ! :)
To be fair, they made some drastic changes to his character from his real-life counterpart. Black sails Rackham is more of a "cowardly lion" type of character whose original role was to balance out Charles Vane's short sightedness and brutal temper, before becoming his own man. That being said, he does have same affinity of fine clothes as his real life version.
I feel like Calico Jack might have been the inspiration for Jack Sparrow..... I mean.... both are considered the worst pirates in their universe, both are named Jack and both have an animal in their namesake
Honestly his life sounds pretty fun and interesting.... Imagine being alive at that time and sailing ships like that all over the place and attacking and plundering other ships and even stealing their ships if they were of quality. Sailing to some stunning tropical island after a good plunder and partying it up on the tropical paradise with all the alcohol you could want and then going out and doing it all over again. Just imagine living out on those tropical waters though that just sounds so nice even if they were lacking modern accommodations. He lived a more adventurous life than most will live that's for sure not to mention he went down in history just doing his thang lol. It is also amazing that he apparently came up with the iconic flag that we associate with pirates.
Brazil was attacked by English pirates in the 16th century, these are the names: Thomas Cavendish, Francis Drake, and Anthony Knivet. I was reading a book about it in this quarantine.
Just educate your children to see through it. Freedom of speech prevents anything else being done about it.. officially.. ofcourse you can go talk to the company that made the commercial over a seriously hot cup of tea.. if they're out of line.
'Having a woman aboard a ship is bad luck' may be dismissed by many as just some sexist superstition of the time but imo, those who said it had a point. A bloody good one at that. Think about it: A pirate ship full of thieving, murdering, RAPING criminals who find out there's a woman aboard. What could go wrong? Unless she 1) had plenty of strong, loyal allies on board that helped protect her honour. 2) hid her sex like Bonnie, her fate would be a horrific ordeal of gang rape and torment with no escape for days/weeks on the open sea. Also, how many fights would break out among the sex starved rapists if they didn't get a turn with their new toy when they wanted? It'd cause fights and bloody mayhem among the crew. And if the captain decided to keep a pretty girl all for himself, well.. mutinies have been called for less..
Your characterization of pirates as "sex starved rapists" is not really understanding how and why people became pirates, or even who most of them were. Several were just petty criminals who had chosen to evade the law and save their own lives, or people who, for whatever reason couldn't find steady employment and ended up in a ship with hopes of surviving. Not to mention there were several female pirates, the most notorious of which actually captained their own ships and commanded over their own crew. Some pirates formed their own "nations", had their own code (yeah, that was a thing, not just in movies) and it absolutely did not allow rape or the mistreatment of women. In many aspects pirates were more just and more progressive than the society that had forced them into that life. I don't mean to romanticise what they were, some were just outright POS, but this idea that rape was rampant is innacurate, since the ships they raided were merchant ships, and you didn't have women on board of those either.
@@Palmieres I disagree mate, I feel that your image of pirates is slightly too romantic. Sure, plenty if not most were just petty criminals, (similar to today's prison populations) others were murderers, rapists etc. on the run from the law. Genuine monsters who did horrific things. Never denied the existence of female pirates/captains (huge fan of Gráinne Mhaol), the respect they commanded or their astounding achievements. Also never said rape was rampant. it couldn't have been rampant as there were usually no women aboard.. to prevent it from happening, which was my point. However, there are plenty of accounts of pirate crews forcing themselves on women of captured vessels despite claiming to adhere to the Code you mentioned. An account of the deeds of Thomas Anstis' crew: '.. the Pyrates prevailing, TWENTY ONE of them forced the poor Creature successively, afterwords broke her back and flung her into the Sea..' Other sources say that Slave ships were common targets of which the female passengers were often sexually abused when captured.. We all love the 'pirate = bad boy with a heart of gold' story but it just doesn't reflect reality imo. Give the black sheep and the really bad eggs the freedom to do bad things and they will most certainly do them.
@@GrainneMhaol sure that happened too but at the time the 'Sodomy/buggery Laws' were pretty strict (resulting in imprisonment, torture even executions) and homosexual acts in general were spat upon by basically all societies at the time, including pirates. Not sure how many pirates openly flew rainbow colours over the Jolly Roger
What's interesting is that even though he wasn't exactly a successful pirate, in my opinion he is one of the most important. He is responsible for creating what is considered THE pirate flag, the skull and crossbones.
Been waiting for this!!!! Became fascinated with "Calico" Jack after watching Black Sails. (Although heavily fictionalized) Hopefully there will be more pirate videos in the future!
I believe the worse pirate out there is Captian Kidd: A pirate so terrible at pirating that people debate if he was ever really was a pirate in the first place....
I'd say the worst pirate was Stede Bonnet. Only pirate who bought his ship, was completely unsuccessful and did not protest when Blackbeard claimed his ship as his own.
@@ozarkscarguy540 , True... Kid ran from a lot of possibilities, but he did manage to take a valuable ship. He was hanged for it, but he took at least one ship of note!
From what I've heard, he used more cunning, discipline, & tactics than other pirate captains. Supposedly his men hated him because he believed being drunk during pirate raids would have a bad effect on the fighting! How progressive! LMAO
id love some more pirate videos, as im interested in the topic and Biographics always cover it the best. Some more names to look into are Charles Vane and Benjamin Hornigold
If your interested in the topic id suggest reading Stede Bonnet by Christopher Byrd Downey its quite short but very informative. I have always been fascinated by Bonnet he made Calico look successful to say the least.
Nice, but I would argue that the worst pirate award goes to Stede Bonnet. Stede took to sea as a pirate captain without any sailing experience whatsoever, and relied on the competence of his officers to get anywhere. As a result, his crew came to regard him as a bit of an idiot and Bonnet himself ended up being taken advantage of, and later robbed blind, by Blackbeard. Finally, in a very unpiratey move, when he faced the gallows, he begged the governor to spare his life to the point where he offered to allow himself to have his limbs cut off to prove his determination never to engage in piracy again.
I’m so mad. I see this video in my recommendations, I say “huh, this looks interesting” I click on it, and it’s freaking Simon Whistler again. The man is everywhere, I think he’s following me.
There's probably other comments about it but: If you haven't watched Black sails, do yourself a favour and watch it! It has the grit and character depth that game of thrones had, but actually had a decent ending!
I’d say Captain Basil Hood should be given a shot at little of “worst pirate”. He had the idea to steal a herd of cattle but the cows got so sea sick the stench made his ship unavailable. Even the navy refused to arrest him as it would mean dealing with the sticking ship
I kinda feel like writing a fan fiction about Rhackham about how he was a man that couldn’t decide what he wanted and, by the time he finally chose, it was too late. How he wanted the freedom of a pirate, but also wanted the civil and unthreatening life of a civil man and how Anne Bonny brought him back into piracy because he wanted to show his dedication to her, but was still ultimately a coward in the end. A story of how Calico Jack was one of the worst well-known pirates in history, but a man that was still full of heart who could not decide what he wanted until it was too late to choose. Sounds like a fun fanfiction XD
Any time I see a photo of Lemmy, I'm overcome with an intense urge to cut off whatever that growth on his face was. why the hell did he wear that thing his whole life??
Anyone else want an episode on Samuel Bellamy, aka Black Sam? He became a pirate to get rich so he could marry the girl of his dreams. At one point he owned three ships, and his crew included a little boy. Ultimately, though, at the height of his wealth, one of his ships crashed, and he died at sea.
Charles II looks like the human Squidward. It’s uncanny. Oooh, do his wife. She’s great and beyond amazing and lived till like 80 and had 12 kids in total.

When Bell moved onto a yacht, New York Post sportswriter Tom Keegan commented that Bell was a "perfect pirate" because he "lives on a boat and steals money."

@@brianbarrett2487 But they don't. I've been there twice, on dive trips. The locals say it like we [Americans] do. Is Whistler not English?
The sow. That's what I heard.
I died at your "Pirate Snitch Husband"💀💀🤣😂😂
3:52 "Nassau was a pure paradise."
I think you mean 'piratedise', Simon.
I love this guy because his voice makes everything sooo interesting
Ché Ruiz that's simon
The way he speaks is nothing unusual from where I live.
He has however a presentation style that is should be appreciated
I agree, he has that captivating delivery of the quintessential English gentleman. He has a great command of language.
@@NORTHATLANTICBOY Then you watch Business Blaze...
He has got a great voice!!
But if he was here to defend himself today, he probably wouldn't.
"If you had fought like a man, you wouldn't have been trolled like a dog!"
Jack Rackham was the best part of Black Sails btw (among what was already a masterpiece of television), so really looking forward to learn more about the real historic man behind him ! :)
The opening by Bear McCreary for me, may watch 1st season again today
Oh my gosh yes I love that show it's so underrated, the captain vane was mighty sexy
That series ending - Perfection.
Great show, with a great ending. Loved it!
I have the entire series of Black Sails on dvd. Though fictional it did feature a lot of actual pirates.
An absolute masterpiece.
Dude was on a permanent booze cruise.
Simon. We're now waiting for Anne Bonny and Mary Read
I feel like Calico Jack might have been the inspiration for Jack Sparrow.....
I mean.... both are considered the worst pirates in their universe, both are named Jack and both have an animal in their namesake
It's funny because his spouse Anne Bonnie is one of the infamous female pirates so he probs was pretty overshadowed by her
“That’s got to be the best pirate I’ve ever seen”
He wasn't that bad, he got a video narrated by Simon Whistler, gotta count for something.
Amen
LOL Calico Jack didn't even realized Vane was using him as bait, time and time again.
Ann Bonney is a hero of mine since I was a little girl with red hair being a tomboy and only really friends with boys.
And a horrible murderer
Sure she was
Brazil was attacked by English pirates in the 16th century, these are the names: Thomas Cavendish, Francis Drake, and Anthony Knivet. I was reading a book about it in this quarantine.
"When you decide" instead of "if you decide" is one of the most annoying marketing techniques.
Along with 'congratulations on getting the opportunity to give me your money'
Conor Pokall women aboard should swallow at 4 cans of spinach daily to harden them up.
An account of the deeds of Thomas Anstis' crew: '.. the Pyrates prevailing, TWENTY ONE of them forced the poor Creature successively, afterwords broke her back and flung her into the Sea..'
Other sources say that Slave ships were common targets of which the female passengers were often sexually abused when captured..
We all love the 'pirate = bad boy with a heart of gold' story but it just doesn't reflect reality imo.
Give the black sheep and the really bad eggs the freedom to do bad things and they will most certainly do them.
They weren't that sex-starved. Pirates were notorious for shagging each other.
Simon could make reading the dictionary sound amazing. However, Simon it's Nas-SAW. Thank you!
David H I’m glad I’m not the only one. It took me a few times if him mispronouncing it to realise where he meant 😂😂
What's interesting is that even though he wasn't exactly a successful pirate, in my opinion he is one of the most important. He is responsible for creating what is considered THE pirate flag, the skull and crossbones.
MORE PLEASE!! 👏 Anne Bonny and Mary Read need their own! Such BAMFs
Been waiting for this!!!! Became fascinated with "Calico" Jack after watching Black Sails. (Although heavily fictionalized)
Hopefully there will be more pirate videos in the future!
I believe the worse pirate out there is Captian Kidd:
A pirate so terrible at pirating that people debate if he was ever really was a pirate in the first place....
I'd say the worst pirate was Stede Bonnet. Only pirate who bought his ship, was completely unsuccessful and did not protest when Blackbeard claimed his ship as his own.
@@ozarkscarguy540 ,
True... Kid ran from a lot of possibilities, but he did manage to take a valuable ship.
He was hanged for it, but he took at least one ship of note!
Bartholomew Roberts, aka "Black Bart" was also a grim piece of work.
He'd be worthy of an episode, too.
From what I've heard, he used more cunning, discipline, & tactics than other pirate captains. Supposedly his men hated him because he believed being drunk during pirate raids would have a bad effect on the fighting! How progressive! LMAO
@@bluesira - Dude was certainly driven.
Random guy “being a pirate would be pretty cool!” Scurvy: “yeah, sure pal”
A pirate life with two beautiful lassies as your first mates.
What more could you ask for, Simon Sensei?
All of us here after watching OFMD: yeah...that guy was * the woooOOOoOOrrrsssttt *
id love some more pirate videos, as im interested in the topic and Biographics always cover it the best. Some more names to look into are Charles Vane and Benjamin Hornigold
Yes Charles Vane was a very sneaky nasty and inventive pirate I'd love that
May we consider Bartholomew Roberts a.k.a Black Bart for next?
If your interested in the topic id suggest reading Stede Bonnet by Christopher Byrd Downey its quite short but very informative. I have always been fascinated by Bonnet he made Calico look successful to say the least.
The best thing to say about caico jack, Anne Bonny tolerated him....
You should do more episodes on pirates. Especially Read and Bonny
Wanted to thank u for makin content. Been having my 8 yr old checking out vids as a history channel during quarantine. Thank u
Thanks for providing actual good educational content during lockdown
Even though his appearance in AC Black Flag was quite brief, he did have a lot of impact due to his funny but foolish personality
When I saw "worst pirate", I thought you meant 'most evil'.
me too
I’d say Captain Basil Hood should be given a shot at little of “worst pirate”. He had the idea to steal a herd of cattle but the cows got so sea sick the stench made his ship unavailable. Even the navy refused to arrest him as it would mean dealing with the sticking ship
Well, that probably would grant him the title of most pathetic pirate, but I think to be the worst you should at least have been somewhat relevant.
More pirate videos please! These ones are some of the best videos!
Thank you for making quarantine more enriching Simon! Cheers!
Johnny Depp's had enough rum to be an actual pirate.
Pirates in the 1700’s: Massive Warships with hundreds of cannons
Pirates now: Inflatable boat with Ak47
The algorithm suggests nothing but videos I've already watched until you post new vids on all your channels , I wait for these lol ..
Same. XD
Same here 😕
I'm actually related to Calico Jack, so now I have someone to blame my incompetence on.
Amazed Hollywood never cast Maureen O'Hara as Anne Bonny.
I’d love one on the lead singer of Motörhead. He had an incredibly interesting life story. You could title it Lemmy: Born to Lose, Lived to Win
There already is a very good documentary called Lemmy.
@@timberray9572 I'm aware but it'd still be cool to have it on here
Oooo, catchy!

Everyone knows Calico Jack is just a low rent Captain Morgan
Shoulda just made this video about how dope Anne Bonny was
Charles II looks like the human Squidward. It’s uncanny. Oooh, do his wife. She’s great and beyond amazing and lived till like 80 and had 12 kids in total.
@Platigx ok so I wasnt the only one noticing that XD
Actually, the worst Pirate was Derek Bell, a free agent who signed a two-year contract, then quit the ballclub before spring training. The Pittsburgh ballclub paid him $4.5 million not to play. When Bell moved onto a yacht, New York Post sportswriter Tom Keegan commented that Bell was a "perfect pirate" because he "lives on a boat and steals money."
good info
This was awesome. Very good script Simon. And great delivery. Thank you.
Who remembers Black sails? 💥💥
Wood Rodgers: you are without doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of.
Calico Jack: but you have heard of me!
Bahamian and bohemian aren't the same thing, mate.
Bohemian is used correctly within the context as it means unconventional, he is refereing to an unconventional pub aka a brothel.

@@Kai-mh6sv It means socially unconventional in an artistic way, so no, he didn't use it correctly, because even in the provided context, the definition doesn't fit. Thought you did something there, eh?
