Walking in nature has added mental health benefits. Try to get away from the city. If you can hear birds singing while you're walking you're on the right track!
I find it very stressful walking alone outdoors, need a loo break after 20 mins, fearful of dogs having been attacked by a dog in the past. For me the gym treadmill is massively better for exercise.
I personally have the same awareness issues of walking outside in unprotected areas, having also experienced a dog attack. My solution is the treadmill, but I pull up videos on YT that are nature scenes. Also lots of travel videos out there where people (I watch a lot of English walkers) go and explore villages or nature trails.
In case someone else also couldn't make out the name brand of the shoes that Brad is showing in the beginning, it is ALTRA. the first model (non hiking) he shows is the lone peak 7, I needed these so now I have a name to go after in the stores - cheers !
I’ve had 3 spine surgeries & told I needed another when the sciatica was getting intolerable. No way. In March, I started walking every morning. I walk an average of 2 miles in a local cemetery which has hills & unpaved areas. Therefore, I’m getting a variety of walking conditions. I love listening to the birds & it’s very peaceful. I was recently advised to buy Kizik walking shoes by my podiatrist because I have severe pain trying to bend over to tie my sneakers. Wow, they are a game changer! I now own 4 pair! They have the wider toe base also. Thanks guys for these great tips! Btw, I already walk backwards for a few steps on the hilly areas! You really feel the different muscles!
I'm 60, and fortunately have no physical constraints, but I got some great tips from this video! Especially the zig zag warm ups, and the soft walking. I think I pound my heels pretty hard when I walk, so I'm going to try that immediately. Thank you!
I learned of the value walking backward from a Pilates instructor for horse riders. It is so good for activating & opening the hip flexors. Tight contracted hip flexors is such a common problem for so many of us who spend so much time in a sitting position. When they are tight, they cause compensations in posture and gait that make painful trouble.
Bob you remind me So much of my husband who had the exact same thing brought on by melanoma cancer that went to the brain in the cerebellum area and he had a brain bleed. ….those are the exact symptoms that he was left with. He seemed even more precious to me . God bless you enjoy your family and keep the faith.
My favorite way to help people transition away from heal striking is to have them walk/run in place. I have never had a single person do this with heel strike! Then, I ask them to try it in place with a heal strike - everyone hates it! So, I have them go back to ball-of-foot strike that is natural (I transition to weight bearing on my heal). Once they are in-the-zone, I tell them to lean forward et voi la!
I tried what you said, walking in place, it seemed like i was marching in place, is that what you meant. I never moved forward at all. It is definitely ball of foot strike. Not sure what you mean by transition to weight bearing on heel? i have tried when walking to strike with ball of foot. i really think it bothers me more just trying. Than walking as I do.
Regarding walking toe first: I saw a video a couple years back of a man who was recreating the way people dressed, worked, and walked during the middle ages. He based a lot of his information on the art of the time - drawings, paintings, woodcuts. They depicted people walking, and even running, toe first. So perhaps that was the natural way to walk. I wonder if the walking changed when we added heels to our shoes.
Great information. An unfortunate thing is as we get older, larger prostates, etc., we pee more, drop more, have less control, so people will self treat by drinking less, so they wee less, which causes all kinds of problems. And where we tend to take more and more medications, having less liquid to process them and our food, leads to self created issues as well. Thank you for these, especially supplemental info regarding foot shaped shoe options, which is trending everywhere as more and more people realize the opportunity for making pennies.
I walk backwards downhill to save my knees. It's a little tricky cuz I can't go too fast, but if i walk downhill the normal way, it kills my knees. This is good to know if you live in hilly areas. It's much easier to walk up the hill than back down the hill, I find.
Years ago i came across Northwest Foot & Ankle website. I was having foot pain. I read information directly from Dr ray McClanahan and watched many videos. So thankful for the guidance regarding foot health. I will never trap my feet again. My feet are healthy and thats so important to the rest of the body.
Same incl uphill - carefully 😂. Side walking (inside) too. Tip from my PT. Good for hip muscles used in bal and walking. Also 2x wk straight line sobriety test used by police for hard to work muscles and obv bal. Harder then it looks. I do this inside. 😉
@michellelyon I am doing exactly what you are doing….walking the cemeteries going up and down the hills and uneven paths. Thank you for the walking shoe information! At 86, hip with bone on bone arthritis along with DDD , a surgery? No way! The key is movement. Bob and Brads tips are always spot on, every one of them. Blessings…💕
I went from not walking since working in nyc in the 1990s to waiting age 59 doing 7 miles a day, then i went running, and all summer i was destroyed, i tore my left meniscus and right siatica all down my leg. And some walks were with flip flops, but now im on your program and doing better. Live and learn
I love Altra shoes. Been wearing them for years. I got tired of my toes being swished with poorly designed shoes. The best for my feet. I wear their trail sneaker mostly. Its not a minimalist shoe, has cushion and feels great.
Thank you for mentioning using a walker. I appreciate your alternative exercise using a sit-down method. I am not able to do many exercises standing up. Thank you for mentioning staying hydrated. A reminder is always welcome. Say hello to Bob! Welcome Mike!
I am gonna add walking in the morning for every morning. One request : can you please add a video on some basic concepts like how to detect if any muscle is tensed or tight and needs some stretching. 😢 Most of the people tend to ignore the symptoms (if any) before it gets really bad. Thank you

I discovered walking backwards accidentally. I need both knees replaced but it's not an option at the moment. So right now, the stairs in my home are a problem. I discovered walking up or down slowly backwards while holding both rails eases the tension on both knees a lot. I don't do the stairs any more than I have to and I do take it very slowly. Going up and down sideways also helps.
I love walking and cycling not at the same time though 😂 I'm 59 this year I have my doggo Boarder Collie so being fit n active is a must.. I walk every day or I leave my car at home and cycle to wear I need to be that day..I've just finished a 8 mile walk today.. I don't walk that far ever day I usually do between 3/4 miles a day with my doggo what ever the weather it doesn't stop us.. Love your channel..

Both my grand dad's love to walk, and they did. I use to love to walk and still would if it didn't hurt so bad. I am flat footed right foot worse than left, but the left hip is the 1 that has been replaced, it still hurts. Podiatrist told me to wear New Balance shoes, but they haven't helped.
Hey Brad, Bob and Mike. I am 5' 11" and have small feet. I have a theory that my small feet play a role in my low back and hip pain. If I am barefoot or use a very minimal no cushion show my pain goes away immediately.
You will notice that the fore-foot-striking-method may be a little tough to get used to. Just utilized this method and I notice my BPM was a bit more of a higher pace. Need to condition this new practice, lol. I really noticed it though. I didn't get ANY lower back pain/stress. (:
Hey good video. I know you're not getting paid for shoes but, will you give me the brand names of the wide toebox shoes? I wear a size 15 so I am limited in the shoes I can find and have to order online without being able to try them on. Any tips on comfortable walking shoes? Thanks
I am type 2 diabetic and i always loved walking even though i struggle with plantar fasciitis. I see a new podiatrist tomorrow. I recently had to stop once i started getting blisters.
❤Brad is Excellent with his explanations and demonstrations. Michael kinda just sits with No expression🤔. Could someone please tell him to wear long pants❓❗ I have had a lot of physical therapy over the years and never saw a physical therapy assistant, Michael,in shorts😂.😮

@@libbyannstew8775 I am disappointed in how long they last. The uppers will look fine, but my feet/back will tell me that the support has broken down. I’m resigned to it & try to find deals on them.
Another youtube dude who gives walking advice disagrees with you! He says that landing heel first (not hard, but first) is the natural way to walk. Maybe you can do best 2 of 3 falls to determine the winner? Seriously, there is so much conflicting advice on just about everything, it's hard to know what to believe. As for me, my right hip "catches" when I walk, and although it isn't painful, it is uncomfortable. Something to do with entheses and the trochanter. Apparently I have bony spurs on the bone underneath the muscles or tendons or something.
What would you recommend for someone who has had a left hip replacement and also a right knee replacement. Soft and level walks are best 15 minutes one way and 15 minutes back.
Wish you could recommend types of shoes. I have no idea what shoes to get. Years ago a bus T-boned my car, damaged my knees, shoulders, head, eyes, etc. and caused a traumatic brain injury. While healing up, I just automatically started walking on my toes (no, I didn’t notice as brain injuries cause all sorts of issues). My calves got HUGE (again, I didn’t notice). A few years later, I was finally sent to PT, and after WEEKS of therapy, my therapist noticed I was walking on tiptoe, and he asked me why. I said I hadn’t noticed and didn’t know why. It’s been almost 14 years now, I’m still in great pain and have chronic pain in knees, arms, shoulders, hands, rotator cuffs, and more. I can’t do most of the stretches you recommend before walking. Just walking to the next room is difficult. How do I start again?
I love walking, but it is nearly impossible to walk in Houston June - September. So stuck indoors on treadmill. Can you do something about this heat please!
Love my xero shoes which are wide toe and heel drop. From my driveway to stop sigh at end of road is a short distance and inclined. I get up early before ppl leave for work and walk forward down to stop sign and then up the incline backwards to my driveway. Only a few times bc I have cats who like to try following me. They stay up on the property line but I fear if I stay on road too long they might try coming down.
Ugh I've been dealing with heal pain on my left foot. When I go for massage, they really work the knot in my calf and then the pain goes away but then tightness comes back. I never thought I walked wrong until now.
I pronate terribly - it’s genetic from my father. Thus, I’ve always done heel strike first and made a dreadful racket. Any recommendations (I have stability shows and good orthotics). You 3 are the best!
Good morning guys Thank you for this video. I have moderate to severe COPD and I can't travel any distance without using my Up Walker. what can I do to get the most benefit from using it in terms of exercise and getting stronger.?
Love your channel for years and this one in particular related to walking with knee pain. Please tell me the zero drop shoes you mentioned with wide toe area from Ultra I believe. I wanted to know the model name and look into them myself. Would greatly appreciate this information 😁🙏🙋♀️
Excellent information. I still have IT Band Syndrome just slightly. I would think this will help. I would love to find a reasonably priced tennis shoe.
Good tips, I seem to have super tight calves and I suspect the feedback from the treadmill is the cause. When the tight calves hit, its friend plantar fasciitis joins the party.
Do you have any additional advice for those of us, who have always stood with our knees snapped back? Whenever I hear how the glutes are engaged, I find mine never are! When I stand, my lower abdominal muscles do not engage. I have been told by physical therapists, that my body has learned to use different muscles for walking. (There is also some connection with how flexible I am at 71?!?) Sometimes, I am able to engage the lower ab muscles, but it never lasts long, and some days, I can’t engage them at all! Is there any help for this?

I get up early before ppl leave for work and walk forward down to stop sign and then up the incline backwards to my driveway. Only a few times bc I have cats who like to try following me. They stay up on the property line but I fear if I stay on road too long they might try coming down.
Wish you would share some walking tips for pain free walking for people with hip osteoarthritis
What about walking with poles/sticks for upper body exercise and balance
@1:15 Mike’s rxn was mine. 😂
Ugh I've been dealing with heal pain on my left foot. When I go for massage, they really work the knot in my calf and then the pain goes away but then tightness comes back. I never thought I walked wrong until now.
I just bought Hoka’s. Drink Lmnt for electrolytes
Me too, and after a week at work as a nurse I hate them
@@moe9265 I’m going to use for my 10 k steps. Hope I love them.
I pronate terribly - it’s genetic from my father. Thus, I’ve always done heel strike first and made a dreadful racket. Any recommendations (I have stability shows and good orthotics). You 3 are the best!
Walking backwards - go to the local high school track and pick a lane in which to walk backwards. It’ll keep you on the straight and narrow. 😊
Good morning guys Thank you for this video. I have moderate to severe COPD and I can't travel any distance without using my Up Walker. what can I do to get the most benefit from using it in terms of exercise and getting stronger.?
What about Adidas Ultraboost? My physiotherapist recommended me these. I did like them, but they look anything but flat.
Love your channel for years and this one in particular related to walking with knee pain. Please tell me the zero drop shoes you mentioned with wide toe area from Ultra I believe. I wanted to know the model name and look into them myself. Would greatly appreciate this information 😁🙏🙋♀️
Good one! Thank you for these tips. Most are new to me.
Hope you like them!
Thank doc 👏👏👏☝️🙏
You're welcome!
Excellent information. I still have IT Band Syndrome just slightly. I would think this will help. I would love to find a reasonably priced tennis shoe.
So needed this video today. Thank you so much. Could you share the name brand of these wide toe box shoes?
I wear flip flops most of the time or bare feet when I can. I have no foot problems. I'm 72
Love Brad’s Franki Valli vibe in the thumbnail.
Thanks!
Practice regularly, I suppose

And coffee isn't water. 😆. Lots of good tips. Thanks. 🙂
How does the body know that H2O contained in a cup of coffee isn't water (H2O)?
Hmmm, one recommended flat shoes and one recommended an arch support shoe. Did I misunderstand?
