  • This we’re exploring the city of Mendoza in Argentina! To start things off we headed to the edge of town to find a great viewpoint and a monument called Monumento al Ejército de Los Andes. We walked up the top of the hill on a hot day, it’s not too difficult of a walk but can get quite hot in the sun!
This video is sponsored by Filmora Video Editor, to find out more information click here 👉 bit.ly/2Y6BSmf
Later we headed down the hill to the park called Parque General San Martin where we first visited the Fountain or the Continents or Fuente de los Continentes we also spent some time walking around the park.
We’d worked up an appetite so later we headed back to the main part of the city where we went to a restaurant that came highly recommended on Avenue Arístides Villanueva called El Palenque Aristides - here we had (more) Argentinean Malbec as well as some amazing empanadas.
Lastly we made our was the Plaza Independencia, which is in the very centre of the city and seems to be the point of reference for more directions in the city. Unfortunately the main water feature in the park was under construction when we were there.
    ABOUT MENDOZA
Mendoza is a city in Argentina’s Cuyo region and the heart of Argentina's wine country, famed for Malbecs and other red wines. Its many bodegas (wineries) offer tastings and tours. The city has wide, leafy streets lined with modern and art deco buildings, and smaller plazas surrounding Plaza Independencia, site of subterranean Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno, displaying modern and contemporary art.

3:06 I'm so proud of San Martín and the Andes' army. Only argentinians crossed the Andes to free Chile (chileans were already in Chile). First, not knowing the best place where to cross through the mountains, SAn Martín sent a spy which let leave the army waiting in the Andes for his return and crossed alone wherever he could. He risked his life confronting in person the spanish with some excuse for them to lead him back on the best way through the mountains to Argentina. He could have been excecuted but he manage to deceive them. Once he got the best way to cross the Andes, he lead the army through the mountains. After they conquered there, San Martín freed Perú also

It is indeed a desert region, the reason you see so much green is those "holes" on sidewalks called acequias which are irrigation canals.
You eat empanadas with your hands! ;-) and the classic variety is with meat and onion filling.

@@DelightfulTravellers you know, many drunk peolpe (Mendoza is the wine land) die in the ACEQUIAS when they fall there. But in spring (when the ice of mountains thaw) the acequias are full of clean water and that's the reason of the green life in a dessert like Mendoza

One day you have to see the history of the crossing of the Andes of General San Martin, a feat that 200 years continues to be taught in military colleges around the world, to give you an idea, Napoleon crossed the Alps at 2,500 meters from altitude, Cartagines Anibal crossed the alps at a height of 3,000 meters, and General San Martin crossed the Andes mountains at a height of 5,000 meters

Hi, there! Did you know that Mendoza suffered a major earthquake in 1861 that destroyed the entire city? That is why there are 5 equidistant squares (plazas) where people must meet in case of an earthquake so that the buildings do not fall on them, the Plaza Independencia is the central meeting place in case of catastrophe. GREETINGS from La Plata, Argentina.

Argentina and Uruguay drink plenty of coffee. Mate is enjoyed more in the rural areas, many people in Buenos Aires don't drink it. I don't know why they couldn't find coffee. In Bs. As. there's a cafe every other block, maybe there aren't as many in Mendoza.

In Mendoza every plant you see is irrigated. Whithout the work of many people along many years, there would be no wine nor trees. The water comes from the snow in the mountains. Now many vineyards have drop irrigation (tubes that take the water near each plant, but you need a pump for the water).
San Martín crossed the Andes with 7000 soldiers, horses and mules, across two mountain ranges of the Andes, which are almost twice higher than the Alps, with no roads or any help. Napoleon invaded Italy with 30000 soldiers crossing the Alps which had roads and villages. Napoleon made a trip of 250Km with the maximum height of 2600m. Some of the troops of San Martin crossed 750m at height of 3500 or 4300m. After defeating the Spanish troops in Chile San Martin organized a naval invasion of Perú, where the main Spanish city of South America, which was Lima, was the center of the colonial power of Spain. There he met with Bolivar. But San Martín was named "Protector" of Peru. He organized the new government and the left.
Mendoza lies in a sismic region, so many old buildings were destroyed in different earthquakes.
The empanadas are eaten with your hand, using a paper napking. The traditional, orignal flavor, is the meat empanada. En each province you may find some variations in the rest of the ingredients (olives, raisings, egg, even potato) or that the meat is minced or in small pieces. The usual flavours you should in any place selling empanadas is meat, ham and cheese, chicken, ham and blue cheese, cheese and onion, humita (sweet corn in a creamy paste). And the great question: made in the oven or fried.

The highest peak of the western hemisphere is located nearby. The mountains give the defender an advantage. Now think about what Hannibal did when crossing the Alps with elephants or how fierce battles were at Monte Cassino. Let's say that after a few years spent in the mountain infantry I can say something about fighting in the mountains. Switzerland and Afghanistan are one of the worst countries to conquer. Mountains are places where empires die.

The lake is part of the irrigation system of the park . Every single tree in Mendoza depends on artificial irrigation.

Those holes in the sidewalks (they're called "acequias" in spanish) are for a reason: to provide water for the trees. Remember that Mendoza is on a desert! without them the city wouldn't enjoy such beautiful tree planning, one of the best for any city in the country. Greetings from Argentina!

Meloney Parker the side walk have that holes because the water is tuning from there from the mountain, remember is a desert area and is full of trees, how you think is irrigated?

Those aren't holes caused by earthquakes, they are waterways called acequias which were also used as playgrounds by kids back in the day, including me 🤣😂

they didn't cross the andes with horses, those look like horses , same family" but different names, they are called mulas.. and i doubt Chile joined San Martin , never heard about that ... the andes army was really small compared with the Spanish empire located in Chile.
We did had Slaves, and they fought in front , naked , for their freedom... so extra credits for the slaves from Africa.
