- ▶Hey everyone! In this video I compare the minimum focusing distance between the Sony 16-50mm kit lens, the Sigma 16mm f1.4, the Sony 18-105 f4 G, and the Sony 35mm f1.8. I love lenses that have a short minimum focusing distance. It gives a nice perspective when trying to get the finer details of objects. Hopefully this shows you what minimum focus distance is, and how it looks on these 4 lenses! Thanks for checking this video out and hopefully I taught you something about photography and the gear used to capture great photos!

Very happy .Probably the only RUclipsr who makes detailed videos about sony a6000 and its kits.
Loving theses a6000 videos ‼️
Thanks so much!
I just got a couple of vintage lenses, ones a sunagor 200mm f4 and others a Helios 58mm F2. Sunagor has problems but the Helios is one hell of a beast. Clinical with character i must say. Absolute beast.
Some nice work with those lenses and showing the different distances. But I think a couple of those were mislabeled LOL. But I figured out what lenses was with what picture. Thanks for sharing brother. And by the way is this the same place that you and Meg moved into back when you were a vlogging channel? Or for that matter when I was doing MP vlogs. Or am I just confused all the way around?
We’ve been here for a little over 2 years. It’s a carriage house. I did weekly vlogs here but not the daily vlogs. Unfortunately we have to move in May due to the township determining we can’t live here bc of a bullshit rule that our landlord honestly didn’t mean to break. Long story. So we’ll be in a new place sometime in 2020, even though we love this place.
@@kyletaggart Well that sucks. Buy I'm sure the new place will be great.
Do you guys look at minimum focus distance for lenses?!
Two options for Macro:
▶Sony 30mm f3.5Macro Lens - geni.us/SonyMAcro30mm
▶Meike Macro Adapters (for Sony) - geni.us/MeikeExtender
Thumbs up on the video. Have a question though. What kind of adapter if any were you using for the non-Sony lenses?
Sigma makes 3 E Mount APSC lenses. 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm all f1.4. No adapter. The canon lens I talk about I don’t have an adapter for and doubt there is one for it (EF-M).
@@kyletaggart So the Canon just works "as-is" no adapter? I'm sure that's just in manual but still interesting. I've started using a couple vintage lenses hubby had (Minolta and Sigma) for his old Minoltas, but picked up a K&F Concepts converter for those.
Interesting comparison! By the way, you could also switch to manual focus mode, turn the focus ring to minimum, turn on focus peaking, and move the camera until the subject is in focus :) perhaps that would make it a bit more accurate as you won't have to rely on the autofocus system. Get well soon!
God you are testing on with my entire kit that i used before i switched to full frame. If i remember correctly I’m pretty sure the 16mm had the best minimum focusing distance. GREAT VIDEO!
The sigma 16mm can get CRAZY close. You get rid of the Sigma? surprised you didn't use it in your lowlight video.
hikyletaggart unfortunately i did. I got rid all of my aps-c kit to get my a7iii. I had all three of those lenses and loved them all. I have toyed with getting the sigma again when i picked up my a6000. But it’s tough since it’s an crop sensor lens and won’t translate completely to the full frame. But if i find it for the right price!
Haven't tried the Meikee macro tubes with the Sony 35mm f1.8. Works great with the kit lense.
Another awesome video :) Thanks Kyle!
Thanks for checking it out!!
Thank you Kyle for the great content!
Thanks Chris!! You’re too kind.
Funny you mentioned the Meike rings. I bought them last year when I saw your video. Amazing shots you can take with those rings. Thanks for the tip.
Nice Miguel!
I did too! Lots of fun and cheap if you are a beginner in macro photography. The results are amazing.
Is it me or did you mis label the final photos. Seems like the 35mm should be the bottom left picture
ah crap! Bottom two are mixed up. Bottom left is 18-105, bottom right is 35mm. dangit!!
Hey Kyle! I love your channel and you helped me with my decision with picking the a6400 earlier this year. Would you recommend full frame lenses for apsc bodies if I know that in a year or 2 I’ll upgrade? What do you think about the 2 Tamron lenses?
I've heard good things about the Tamron lenses, and if you feel the A7III or something like it is on the horizon, I think it's a good move. Maybe not a bunch of full frame lenses, but maybe one to start. See how it feels, and then go from there. Thanks for the support!
Nice! I am continually impressed with the Sigma 16mm and saving up to buy it. This is off topic, but I would like to know what percentage of professional photography work you do for clients? I'm trying to integrate photography and videography into my business as a full-time graphic and web designer, advertising and brand consultant. My goal for 2020 is put together a nice portfolio of photos and videos and promote them through my website, social media and maybe some direct mail targeted at small to medium size businesses.
I don’t do much. Did a wedding, hated it. I basically help my gf’s business as needed now, and stick to RUclips / photography for my enjoyment. I prefer the education sector I suppose. She does engagement shoots, family shoots, and soon weddings. I’ll be her second shooter for one soon. Who knows what 2020 holds though. I would like to get involved with more brands and doing photos for them. So we’ll see. I have big plans with that.
@@kyletaggart nice. I got my first photo gig last year shooting food for a new restaurant. Unfortunately the place closed within 9 months and he never paid his bill. He says he will but I'm not holding my breath. I'm hoping to get some real estate gigs this year and maybe some more restaurants. It's a lot of fun and a nice break from my graphic design job.
@@ckdesignlab I honestly want to do real estate photos (at least for a little bit). Let me know . the logistics of that if you get into it!
I think the min focus distant is calculated from sensor to subject, looking at where your hand position on the table, the sigma and kit is roughly the same? just the sigma is so much longer physically, it seems like ur getting very close
They were both shot at 16mm. If the minimum focus distance was the same, the image should be the same. Think there is some variance in it.
Hey brother!!! Hope you feel better soon!!!
Thanks! Had to power through and get this video out!
Your a great guy! 👍 keep it up!
Hi! Total newbie here but how do you get the background to blur and the focus on the funko? I love these types of pictures and want to take some of my son and am a total newbie with this camera and not happy with the general settings that it came with that we've been using.
I have a video called “Bokeh Basics”. That is where you’ll find your answer 😊✌🏻
Great Video!
Thanks Jay!
Another great video!
I don't know if it's fair for a big zoom lens like the 18-105 to be included... I mean it has a wide range and also the 16-50mm could zoom all the way in and then compare the pics with the bokeh
Nobody would use those zoom lenses like that for the little figure as the subject.
This needs a remake and then compare the pics again(zoom lenses fully zoomed in and the primes stay the same)
The distance was not necessary in this case.. we want to know the minimal distance while completely zoomed in!
Good video:)
would you suggest the 30mm macro lens?
I haven’t used it, but I’ve seen others so great work with it (checkout @work_the_angle on Instagram). He used to use it and it always blew me away - he’s incredibly talented as well.
That Sigma is a great Lens. great Vid
Thanks so much!
Nice video! :)
Thanks!!
I cringed at that broken bottle of Humalog. Liquid gold. Glad I'm not the only one wondering why I can't get a closer shot with my kit lens. Looking at some tubes.
The Zeiss 24mm 1.8 has an amazing focus distance as well, shorter then the Sigma i believe.
Ohhhh! Maybe one day I’ll pick that up used.
@@kyletaggart 16cm on the Zeiss and 25cm on the Sigma, nice focal length as well for a prime, I only really use that and the 35mm.
I still prefer the 18-105 since you get a nice creamier bokeh when you zoom all the way into 108mm at F4 +OSS and versatility
Hi which is the focal length that lets you get as close to your subject in a minimum distance? On 18-105
I have the Sony 18-105 lens. I found out one thing through use and that is with a zoom lens, the minimum focus distance seems to increase as you zoom in.
For example, @ 18mm your sensor has to be 0.45m away from subject. One would think you could keep that distance away and then zoom in to fill your frame with the subject. Nope.
I have tropical fish and want to get some photos where the small fish fill the frame but I can't. Having to step back further as I zoom so it will focus means my subject is the same size in the photo.
Is this how minimum focusing on a zoom works or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks
Yes, that is how it works.
Also people need to take into consideration, if not needing a 6000 X 4000 snap, then can crop in for close up, OR, with zoom lens, stand back and zoom in, composing closer shot, even with great blurred backgrounds if some distance between subject matter and background.
Options abound, if having the room.
An extreme example, the FE200600G, with a 2.5 meter min. focus distance, not cropped:

cropped (2193 X 1726)
i.postimg.cc/bJNW8DGz/DSC07472-2.jpg
Would the Sigma 30mm get as close as the Sony macro lens?
I would assume no. The Sony macro gets even closer than the Canon 22mm. I don’t know the minimum distance on the Sigma 30.
When you use sigma lense, do you use converter?
No it’s made for the sony camera. No adapter needed
What's your suggestion on using a Canon lens(Canon EF 50mm f1.8 STM) on the A6000 ?
I'd suggest not getting an adapter for it and instead putting it towards a used Sony 50mm f1.8. However if you already have it give it a shot!
@@kyletaggart thank you so much for the help ♥️
You're such a great person ♥
Have a great year ahead ♥
It is because focusing distance is measured from the sensor plane not from the front of the lense.
Can you do same for video test.
the Sigma has a better focusing distance because of of the big aperture of 1.8, i believe
Even when shot at f3.5 and listed as the same?
The Funko HQ is about two miles from my house. (Everett, WA) Give me a shout if you decide to come and check it out. Cheers!
Ohhhhhhhhh! That’s very tempting! I bet it’s fun to work there.
Battery Life a6000...?
It’s decent. Buy multiple batteries though. Checkout my Sony a6000 accessories video.
@@kyletaggart Thanks Brother
The 18-105, could have also showed off how much it could zoom in by. And, then... you could have shown off how much Bocah would be introduced when zoomed in up close.
True, I just wanted to see the wide aspect though. Wide and close.
outdoor video Rec :-* ♥ thanks for Sharing ♥
Think I’m gonna walk around more and try the vlog style. I didn’t script this video, I just had the idea and picked up the camera and did it. I also almost didn’t finish editing it bc the video was shaky. I left my kit lens for the M50 in my gf’s car and even though it was all filmed, I thought about reshooting the entire thing tomorrow. So glad I just finished posted it as is!
@@kyletaggart yeah video was shaky but thats fine 😘
Did I see patio furniture in this video?
Surprised no links 😂😂😂
Hahaha. Dang!
I thought it was going to be a shameless promo from Kyle, but no mention of it! LOL
I think the sigmas closest focus is 20cm. So 0.2m.
1st!
