I believe that the reason why this video is so important is because you are acknowledging that not every curly likes volume and that that is entirely fiiiineeee. It's great that you guys represented that. ❤️
I am mixed race. I stopped flat ironing in May 2021 and my last relaxer was Feb 2021. Thank you for having someone one channel with hair closer to my hair. The back curls are great but my top/front have heat damage etc. I have problems styling etc. Do her hair again!! I’d love to see it in a few months again.
Mell, you are such an incredible teacher! It’s a delight watching you. You demonstrate through your words and actions how to love textured hair. I just realized my hair is curly this month, styled it curly for the first time and cried. It feels like I can accept who I am more fully now. ❤️Thank you Mell!
Elongating curls gives me the shivers since I strive for tight ringlets and definition! But we’re all different! Her hair is beautiful! I do hope you do more videos like this, with different curl types. I’d like to see you do someone with thin, fine hair that doesn’t have a lot of hair, trying to achieve volume and definition with little hair.
Thank you for teaching us how 2 take care of different hair types!! It means so much ❤❤❤. Maeson thank you for being a model!! Amanda thank you for working so hard on editing the videos, your hard work shows!! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much Mel for this Video. You have been such an informative resource on my hair. I wanted to just add a note - Curl pattern typing isn’t helpful, but helps folks relate to one another. The model appeared to have type 3c/3b curls. Type 4a hair is much tighter spiral curls. Type 4b higher textured and more coilier and 4c is more of a zig zag no curl pattern. I would love to see a true 4a coily spiral curly haired model. Note - most of us have all or so many types of curl patterns on our heads. Thank you for being our Mane Mentor :)
I believe that the model is growing out damaged hair so the pattern we see in the video is a result of heat and chemical damage. Mel said her natural 4a pattern was growing back in at the root.
Thank you so much for adding this! I was thinking the same about the model’s hair type, but I have wavy hair and it is really helpful to learn from the insight of those with tighter patterns
@@ansleybirchmore2792 even with heat damage the size of the curl is too big to relate to type 4 hair, plus the root itself looks nothing like type 4 hair. Mel mentioned the heat damage is in the front, the back of her hair is really loose. So I’m sorry I think Mel is lovely but she doesn’t understand hair typing
@@LeilaVividSounds Thank you. It's almost as if she hasn't looked around RUclips and viewed any type 4 hair videos at all, which is disheartening. My hair (when defined) has a diameter slightly smaller than the circle created by a hole puncher 🤷♂️. The hair in the very front of my head goes 1 inch past my chin when extended but it lives slightly above my eyebrows. If I fingercoil my entire head, the pattern becomes compact like a slinky creating even more shrinkage. She's just not my people in terms of "hair type" but her hair is nice nonetheless.
I think any curly girl, when her hair is dry, with no moisture added, will be poofy and look like type 4 hair. I even saw a video of Mel with her hair blow dried and it was poofy and frizzy. Thank you so much Mell!! My hair is this same length and I struggle so much when styling it to make it last longer!! Can you do a refresh video next on this type of hair? I struggle with that from time to time! Thanks so much! You rock!!

My hair is a very similar texture and curl pattern, and while I've learned to take care of my curls, one thing that will never be true for me is it lasting a week! I wanted to cry when you said Maeson's would LOL. Once I sleep on it, it's just not the same. YES I use a bonnet and silk pillow covers. And tying it up in a pineapple completely straightens my roots so that the next day the bottom half is curly and the top/root half is straight!
How about sleeping without a bonnet and only just on a silk pillow case. That’s what works for my 3b 3c hair and if the next day is a bit messy give it a refresh with water and a little of styling product. Hope this helps but mostly try doing a routine that only works for YOU because everyone’s hair is different
Great video. I straightened my hair last week to have my mom trim it. It had been too long since my last trim. My hair was so long straight. Unfortunately I had to have three inches cut because I waited too long, my ends were so bad. 😕 now my hair curly is at my shoulders but I am happy for my bouncy springy curls!
I ordered both of your hair towels & OMG you weren't kidding, they are so soft like butter!!! I tried mine this morning & love love love it! Thank you they are beautiful!
Love this video! 😃👏🏽 My hair is type 3, thick and has high density. Probably high porosity due to the fact that I have lightened it. And longer then your model. Even though the Denman brush gives my curls more definition, it also enhances the shrinkage. I will definitely try this way of styling and drying to see if I finally can keep the length, when I've diffused my hair. Thank you! ❤️
As someone with type 3 hair, I can clearly see that this woman has type 3 hair… her curls are just short w/ less weight, and damaged as mentioned. i don’t see one coil in this woman’s hair..
Again, I love how Mel doesn’t really include your “curl type” I took the Curlsmith hair quiz and I was recommended the Oil-in-Cream, hold me softly Balm and the soufflé. I have a looser curl pattern. I have always used products for thin hair because I’ve been told for so long that looser curls need thinner products….but my hair porosity and hair texture actually loves thicker products.
Yes! All the curl quizzes ask you your curl pattern and mine doesn't seem to even exist on charts. It's apparently not a 3, but it's more than a 2. I usually pick 2 because I have fine hair and I know they all assume tighter curl patterns = coarser hairs.
Believe you me, I grew up in a household where if I saw some hair on the table out of seven people in the house, I knew which head it belonged to because we all had different textures of hair from very loose to very tight curls; but with everything you just said regardless of how tight your curl or how loose your curl is, how you take care & maintain your hair properly depends on the porosity. That is the key. How easily your hair accepts moisture, that's going to make a difference on whether it feels dry or not. I have low porosity hair and I have a oily scalp and even though I have multi texture hair with a lot of coils mixed in, my scalp is very oily. I do not put oil on my scalp that's a hold over from slavery days. My dermatologist at Meharry Medical College told me when I had seborrheic dermatitis & my dandruff was really bad, he said your face is oily do you think your oil stops at your face? ...No, if you have a oily face your scalp is oily. Stop putting oil on your scalp. All that does is clog your pores and cause dandruff and that's what a lot of black people don't understand. you got oily skin you shouldn't be putting oil on your scalp plain and simple. If you got dry hair chances are you need to wash your hair more often and use more moisturizing products especially if you have low porosity hair cut down on the heavy oils & grease on your scalp and your hair will love it and you'll see the difference trust me
OMG! I was shocked when you said she had 4A hair, I have the same hair as her but thin and low desinty, you can see a lot of my scalp, and it has a lot of shrinkage, but I always thought it was 3B OMG the shock!!!! you have opened my eyes!
I really like this video, but I'd love to see you do hair that is even finer and more "broken" than this beautiful lady's. My hair is closer to your boyfriend's hair than to this lady's, and it takes so long to grow. It's thin, it breaks, and I can't really even section it, it's so thin. I haven't had it cut in three years or so, but the best ponytail I can manage looks like Ben Franklin's. Thank you for all the hard work you and your seester put into this channel. You've been a big help to me and to my curly-headed daughter. We both love you!
It’s great to be able to help people. That’s awesome to help her. I do recommend you when I talk on my little groups. Take care keep rocking the curls My husband asks me if I’m going to continue with the ‘curly thing’🙄 Umm 🤔 yea🤦🏼♀️
hi mell! I would love for you to show us a routine you think would fit a person with short, color damaged, wavy/curly hair with high porosity that has a busy schedule. meaning: I have frizzy hair and not a lot of time please help I love you
Mel, love this video. Every time I styled hair, I never know how it's going turn out... I will follow this routine next wash day and come back for an update. I love curlsmith products and I have my brush but the shrinkage is brutal.
Mel- I wish you lived closer so you could take a look at my head!!! This video is EVERYTHING...my hair is similar to Maeson as it is coily, tight and FRIZZY. I can't elongate, can't get it to clump on top, and seem to have multiple curl patterns. As I hit menopause it continually changes. and OH the breakage!!! More practical videos like this are where it's at. I also really love that you highlight products. I use mostly aveda and HATE to have to spend more on another product line. Do you have any thoughts about how to achieve this same outcome with Aveda products?
My curls are like hers too! The model is a cutie and thanks to you Mel for representation. I don't have heat damage as I stopped using heat on my hair many years ago but I do have water damage. Ever since we switched to soft water softner my curls have been thinning, shedding, changing, and becoming limp. I'm going to try to balance it out with aloe vera and apple cider rinses but if you have a recommendation for that or video, I'm all ears. :)
Thanks for the slow, beginner-friendly, tutorial. I belong to a FB Group about Bi-Racial Hair, and I’ve noticed that it’s mainly white mothers asking how to do their bi-racial kid’s hair. The problem is that white cultures cleanliness expectations clash with those of Black cultures (& now the curly generation). So they don’t seem to believe me when I explain a wash n go; 3-7 days of no washing or detangling!? They also become experts on doing Black hair (4A-C), putting in oils and fancy braids. And I try to tell them that bi-racial hair is usually NOT Black hair, but they find it hard to suspend their disbelief, because their “Black friend taught me to do it this way”. I’m a 52 yr old bi-racial woman, with a great deal of DevaCurl damage (which is why I started learning so much). So I have a long history of Black and white people mismanaging my hair. It wasn’t until about 10 years ago, and amazing product advancement, that I learned that my hair (3C) can hang and swing without relaxers. So I shared this video, and hopefully, it will help “free the babies’ hair”. Speaking of, have you done a video yet on how to handle very damaged, low porosity, damaged hair, as well as a beginner primer for bi-racial kids’ moms?
Correction, Joyel.. "Black" hair especially in the U.S. does not begin and end with 4 type hair. We are composed of many different textures because of the blending of cultures though out the centuries here in America my family is considered "black" & we have type 1 hair through type 4 and the community I grew up in in the South had the same diversity but you may not know that if you didn't grow up in the community & are basing your opinions on the "Outside Looking In" or from just from one side of your family tree.
Yeah, Kim said a lot of what I was thinking. "Mixed" people have been within the black community for centuries so lots of black people don't have the stereotypical type 4 hair. However, I think a big this that should be distinguished is the hair texture/density and porosity from scalp health. I am Latina and Black American from the South. My mother is black but has a completely different hair texture (softer type of 4a maybe) and tried to style my hair growing up the "Black" way with lots of oil eventually a relaxer, some natural braids (which would break my hair if left in over 6 days) here and there. I think we both may have some high porosity and since she attempted to go natural later in life but didn't really big chop, her hair "curls" when it's wet and she puts gel on it. She tries to give me hair advice as if our hair is the same. My dad who is part Latino and I have the same hair type; I have medium density, high porosity 3b with 3c mixed with some 2c mixed all throughout, and a small patch of maybe 4a low porosity hair that doesn't act right. My dad gets his hair cut at a black barber, brushes while dry, and uses pomade. He isn't very in tune with his hair obviously. But I have oily skin like my dad and his dad including a section in the front where most of my 2b/ and 3b is my scalp feels noticeably oil and I may get dandruff but my scalp in general rarely gets dry. So I really needed to wash my hair more often than what the black community would usually do and use oil strategically. My hair looks terrible with too much oil and not enough water/moisture. My mom could go a whole month and not wash her hair. For me, that's a nightmare, and it took me becoming an adult to figure this out. I have cousins who are also Black and Latino but they have different hair and scalp type than me. I also have cousins who are half white and one has primarily 2b/2c hair and the other has primarily 4a hair but I'm not sure about their scalp type. But both take care of their hair differently. So being bi-racial in the sense of one parent is white or some other "non-black" group does not guarantee a certain hair type or even scalp type. Some people with 4a hair can have oily scalp if one of their parents does. Some people with 2b/2c hair can have an issue with dry hair that may influence whether they shampoo or co-wash. But you are correct that there is this false assumption amongst black people, especially if the hair looks thick, that you must handle it a certain way really tends to benefit or suit type 4 hair. It needs to be corrected but because so many black people hold onto this belief, it gets perpetuated even in non-black communities. Lots of other groups that are not familiar with the diversity that is in the "black" community will even sometimes look at a black or bi-racial girl that has a tan with 3b/3c hair and swear it's the same as another black girl that obviously has a type 4 hair texture because the only thing that is registering mentally is the brown skin tone and non-straight voluminous hair. You just can't take care of the different hair textures the exact same way and expect it to thrive!
Omgggg just the video I needed! I was watching all your videos yesterday hahahah. You have helped me so much in the journey of my curly hair. Thank you!!
Mel, your client is beautiful and love her hair but also your hair looks fabulous in this video!! Your hair always looks good but there is something a little extra about it today🥰❤️love ya seester’s😘
I wish my problem was that I had too much curl at the roots! I’m a 3A and I have 3 inches of straight hair from the roots down! Flat, flat, flat! You used the clips to hold it down, not lift it up! Grass is always greener! ☺️ is that your friend? She’s super nice!
Also Mell, I am Puerto Rican and have 3C and maybe some 4a curls. My hair is very frizzy and voluminous with no products, but also very thin and fine. I am currently using Love Ur Curls curling creme for Kinky Curly hair. I believe it is suppose to be a medium hold. My hair also is deceiving when it is wet, but when it dries with no product, it looks like a frizz ball. Can you do a video with more information on 3C to 4 textured hair? Thank you:-)
Mell how did you find my hair twin to make a video just for me?!? I don't know but I love it, thank you for making this video. Some of the tips you shared I've already been doing and that just gives me so much more confidence that I'm going in the right direction to help my curls and style them how I love :D
Mell. I wish I can do a video with you. Cause trust me. You will have a field day with my hair. It is like your seester’ hair, but it is fine and turns flat out of nowhere. It is super knotted all the time too. Though I do the denman brush thing. It still misbehaves.
Hey Mell....please please pretty pretty please how about more videos to help the curly meesters? My son is curly (almost a 4a) and has no clue what to do with his hair. Your videos are great, but it would be nice for the guys to get some dedicated advice.
Thanks soooo much for this!!! I needed this for my short curly hair. It just shrinks when I want it to look as long as it is in the shower. I can’t wait to try these techniques! 😆
Can you do a video about making your curls look badass/ edgy instead of perfect? My hair looks better when it’s more rock n roll but I have only achieved that with it straightened and flat-ironed
I learned so much! I couldn’t figure out why my roots get flat. I’ve been taking horizontal sections thinking it didn’t matter! 🤦🏻♀️ Can you end up with 2 natural parts. Since I was 12 my hair has parted on the left side kind of above the corner of my eye. When my hair went into curl shock after the major cut to get rid of damage & add bangs, it’s now parting in the center but will side part too if coax it.. I’ve had bangs in the past & it was always a side part. Excellent editing Amanda! Sound was great for me. For future ideas would a Seester Q&A be possible? I liked the getting to know you ones. Was thinking more about hair questions. This may sound too simplistic, but one on different kinds of accessories, especially hair ties & what kind to use when would be helpful. I actually thought the alligator clips were part of the dress until you moved. 😂 I’m going to go smell my Curlsmith moisture line now because this made me want some & it’s not wash day. I’m hooked on the scent.
Loved video for short hair. I’m still working with mine. Could you do a short tutorial on how to use the dyson attachment the wide tooth comb? I have one but have no idea how to use it. Thanks so much.
I have very similar hair to this but low porosity. Haircuts are everything when it comes to fine hair. Ask for something that will give you volume. Also, for my low porosity girls, I’ve found success in only using one styling product right out the shower and brushing it through with a small Deman. Lastly, diffuse.
I’m early!!! Hello ladies. We have the same hair porosity/density! So excited and it’s wash day for me; so if this goes well, I’m heading to Ulta to get these products immediately! Thanks Seesters
Blessings Mell! I have fine curly hair and is more fine at the ends. How can I fix it and get volume as well. Bronx NYC wish you had can visit every fan who needs you including me. 😊
How funny! I just fot on today after using my Lus serum for the first time in weeks which is the one main thing that gives me curl back on my massively damaged \ dyed\ bleached hair. So boom! Im watching this. Happy healing, may you have Peace in this delicate time 💞🙌
Hey Mel. Can you do a video on doing vintage styles on curly hair? Most tutorials are for straight hair and it would be so useful to have a tutorial for halloween/fancy dress/period shows etc
This video is so so helpful!!! My sister has the same curl type and it would dry out a few hours after styling as if no products are on her hair. It would be so dry and rough to the touch. We tried using a bunch of different conditioners and stylers but it didn't help at all. Now, I know that it's probably the styling techniques that matters not the products. She never sections her hair while styling , so maybe that's the problem??? Has anyone experienced this problem?
Thanks for this! The hair at the nape of my head is a tighter (fluffier) 4a-ish texture than the surrounding 3c. My problem on wash day is that it shrinks up way more than the other hairs on my head and makes my ends look less full. It's better on day two after sleeping in a pineapple (because it gets stretched). I'm gonna try this elongation method with a focus on the bottom portion. ☺️
Hi could you please do a vid about why hair is straight at the top but the rest is curly? Because I struggle with this and I think it might be because of the amount of shampoo I use?
I love this video, and have learned so much about my own hair in so many of them, I literally take notes. What refresh tips did you give her? Will the steamer help refresh her curls with some leave in spray? Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge.

Hi Mel... I loved hearing your advice for a different hair type. Try some more models. Someone like Amanda's hair but short
I would drive to the TO to style my hair, you are amazing Mel, you have help me love my natural hair❤️❤️👍
Mel your hair is so pretty in this video in every video but it looks healthy and flowly
That is so sweet thank you!❤️
My hair is a very similar texture and curl pattern, and while I've learned to take care of my curls, one thing that will never be true for me is it lasting a week!
I'm not type 4 but I think it's wonderful you are making videos for all different wave and curl patterns :)
Happy Texture Tuesday!!! Love your dress Mell!!! Much love and happiness xoxo!! 😘
Happy texture Tuesday!! The best day of the week ❤️❤️❤️
HAPPY TEXTURE TUESDAY ❤️❤️❤️
It's nice when you work on models so we can see the magic at work. I'm hoping for someone with hair like mine but I haven't seen a lot.
CONGRATULATIONS on being a finalist at the aia I am definitely voting for you you deserve it🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
😭😭😭😭😭you have no idea how excited and grateful I am thank you so much!!!❤️❤️❤️
I always appreciate this fine hair videos, specially now that my hair is very short. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, SEESTERS
Love a coily girl video! I have fine hair so it’s nice to see what you recommend even though I have curly hair
21:32 Maesonnnnnn😍😍😍😍😍
And your freckles😍😍😍😍😍
And Mell your dress with the clips😍😍😍😍😍. It took me a second to realize what u did😂
Isn’t she adorable!! & lol My accessories weren’t intentional but I’m glad you liked them😂🥰
I ordered both of your hair towels & OMG you weren't kidding, they are so soft like butter!!! I tried mine this morning & love love love it! Thank you they are beautiful!
I love this video. I recently chopped my hair and my curls are 3B/3C so this helps so much! ☺️😊
I am so glad you found this helpful!! This is a great time to cut your hair I hope you enjoy this journey!! ❤️❤️
Thank you! ❤️
Happy Texture Tuesday!! 🥰🥰
Love the inclusivity and the model!
Looking forward to seeing different hair types and hopefully mine!
Going to try this technique on my next wash & go.
Maeson looks adorable before & after! Thank you Mell!
Doesn’t she?!❤️❤️
As someone with type 3 hair, I can clearly see that this woman has type 3 hair… her curls are just short w/ less weight, and damaged as mentioned. i don’t see one coil in this woman’s hair..
Super special tutorial because it's ALL that I needed to know also having thick, coarser curls!!Thanks Mane!!
Me too!!!
THIS! THIS! THIS!
@@FreetheTongue Yes! I cannot stand it as I have tightly coily, fine hair. Some curl quizzes don't even make room for such a combination.
@@timothyc.8666 I could not agree more. With my thick, coarse looser curl pattern…it’s like most quizzes don’t even know what to do with it
Believe you me, I grew up in a household where if I saw some hair on the table out of seven people in the house, I knew which head it belonged to because we all had different textures of hair from very loose to very tight curls; but with everything you just said regardless of how tight your curl or how loose your curl is, how you take care & maintain your hair properly depends on the porosity.
I don't think she has 4a curls. They are to big (diameter). I think 3c with some 3b sprinkled in.
@@felicia_716 So 3C, seems interesting i was panicking already ahahahha
@@felicia_716 Definitely type 3 curls. Type 4 curls are curly coils, smaller and tighter.
Mel your hair has really grown and it looks beautiful!
Thank you so much for this. My hair is somewhere between your hair and Maeson’s hair, so this really helps!
Pretty lady and i enjoyed watching tips of different types of curls.
Girrrrl I needed this video! Thank you so much. 💜
Yass of course!! Thanks for watching ❤️❤️
Love you are exploding different types of hair. I hope you do fine, wavy, low density at some point 😁😁
🙋🏼♀️🙋🏼♀️
It’s great to be able to help people. That’s awesome to help her. I do recommend you when I talk on my little groups. Take care keep rocking the curls
My husband asks me if I’m going to continue with the ‘curly thing’🙄 Umm 🤔 yea🤦🏼♀️
This video was MADE for me. Minus the damage. But short and fine omg YES
Gorgeous! I'm going to try this on my 2c 3a curls to make them controlled waves!!!!! Thank You!
Yes!! A lot of these techniques are totally interchangeable across textures!
Her hair looked so pretty! Lovely curls.
Mell, your hair is looking soo gorg xx.
hi mell! I would love for you to show us a routine you think would fit a person with short, color damaged, wavy/curly hair with high porosity that has a busy schedule. meaning: I have frizzy hair and not a lot of time please help I love you
Could you do some in with actual coily hair in the future?
Wow Mell! Your hair looks amazing. I like the dark roots at the front of your hair.
Interesting to hear about the effects of the change of water.
Protein treatment maybe?
@@EmmaLemmon That's a good idea. IT's been happening to all the curly girls in the house so we will def add more protein.
Thank you Mel for doing this, I've been hoping for a long time you'd do this, as this is my hair type. So, thank you very much. Xx
Lots of mixed people have type 4 hair too tho
@@migwigpee0796 Exactly! Genetics are a funny thing!
I would love to see what kind of result you get from the curlsmith transition kit.
Yes.. totally agree Mel’s hair looks extra fabulous the last few days.. did she change the color?
@@ellyrodriguez8708 she did awhile back but I am not sure if she has recently but it looks really good though 😁
Texture Tuesday....That's cute !
Amazing! That is exactly like my hair issues! It gets puffy and no definition very easy when drying out...now I know it's missing moistureee!! 🚿💧
beautifulllll model and mell is absolutely radiant!!!! great video 😍😍😍😍 i love curly hair sm
Two super cuties! I have learned so much from you, Mell! Thank you! : )
Now I know what I need to try on my hair. Thank you Mell.
Both look so gorgeous!!!
Thank you! 💜💜
Will you please style a pixie or pixie bob for us?
Can you do a video about making your curls look badass/ edgy instead of perfect? My hair looks better when it’s more rock n roll but I have only achieved that with it straightened and flat-ironed
I love your videos so much. I literally learn something new in every single video!! ❤️
This is always my goal!! Yay thanks for watching ❤️❤️
I want an update on Masons hair!!!!!!!!!! :)
HI JENNIFER 🥰
Blessings Mell! I have fine curly hair and is more fine at the ends. How can I fix it and get volume as well. Bronx NYC wish you had can visit every fan who needs you including me. 😊
How funny! I just fot on today after using my Lus serum for the first time in weeks which is the one main thing that gives me curl back on my massively damaged \ dyed\ bleached hair. So boom! Im watching this. Happy healing, may you have Peace in this delicate time 💞🙌
Lol I thought the alligator clips were part of Mel's dress 😂😂😂
Hey Mel. Can you do a video on doing vintage styles on curly hair? Most tutorials are for straight hair and it would be so useful to have a tutorial for halloween/fancy dress/period shows etc
Thank you for the tips. Could you please post a video top products for fine thin curly hair?
can you do a miss jessie’s curl review or how to how to really help damaged hair?
Yayyyy her hair is similar to mine!!!!
Is this your new content Mel? I hope so. I can see a whole Manes salon and you filming client hair makeovers.
Thanks for the video, very informative 😀
I’m glad you found it helpful!!
