My husband saw me in mine for first time and he too was scared 😂😂 but I’m telling ya the bonnet is a game changer absolutely brilliant for keeping your curls on point 🥰🥰🥰
Lol when i started wearing satin bonnets *all the time* (when at home) i expected my whole family to ask about it and judge and make fun of the new weird look... literally about two weeks in my brother asked me why i always "had that thing on my head"; i explained to him the reason and he was like oh ok, cool. .. and other than that it was like they didn't even notice. I was shocked😳😂
You’ve taught me to like & care for my hair after 60yrs of being frustrated with it. Your videos are excellent. You’re informative & so enjoyable, you make me smile & laugh each day. You’ve really had a positive impact & I hope you work it all out for yourself Bc I want to watch you forever. You’re so sweet. TY for the joy!
Couldn’t agree more. My whole fam got straight, limp, lifeless hair & I ain’t dis’n it…I’m envious. I’m the black sheep that had nobody with the knowledge needed to teach me how to care for my Medusa’s mane.
Girl I'm a hairstylist and these videos have helped me so incredibly much..thank you .I bought the Denman brush and I love teaching my curly hair clients now 😍
The denim brush somehow separated my hair more than usual, and STRETCHED out my hair. Not my personal preference. Maybe you can do a "denman brush do's and don'ts " like you did with diffusing? And if you did and my notifications did not tell me I'm gonna be so mad at RUclips.
LOL dont blame youtube, thats not video I've created (yet) but depending on our hair texture, scrunching after is so so crucial! Try using it on more wet than damp hair, make sure you're turning the brush enough and lots of scrunching after! You'll have to experiment but dont get discouraged if it doesnt work, not every technique is for every texture! Make sure you'r using protein in your routine!
I’ve seen in some denman brush vids how some people rotate the brush to get their curls to define more (like how you get large curls while straightening hair. Example: on The Fit Curls channel). Johanna Cheryl did a unique rotating technique also. I’ve even seen someone sort of wrap her hair once in the brush and comb through to get her curls defined (Kat’s Makeup Station was the channel!). So I definitely say there are some little tricks out there to try.
Thank you both so much for taking the time to explain that! I completely appreciate it :) And don't worry Mel, I'll take the RUclips logo off my dart board (disclaimer: people please know I am only joking. I'm not that bad.)
I've heard the size of the Denman can affect the curls too. A lot of people even remove sections to help with that, but it's a lot of trial and error. I tried that and wasn't terribly happy so I'll be buying a new Denman, but a lot of people are happy with it.
Thank you, SO MUCH, for explaining the Denman Brush! I know it has been around for a long time. I remember it when I was a kid, and I was born in the 60s. I have 3 different kinds of hair, very slightly wavy, very wavy, and ringlet curls, so it's really hard to get perfect definition. I lost a bunch of hair (over 3/4 - thank goodness I had really thick hair) due to illness, and all the new hair grew back very thick, wavy, and very curly. What's left of the old hair is thin and still on the straighter side, so it's a challenge to style it, especially the curly hair, and especially since I'm so new at dealing with these different textures. I really enjoy your tutorials and your wackiness! It's so refreshing! THANKS! 😁
I’m currently transitioning my hair back to its curls and tried finger coiling last night and it made the biggest difference! Took me an hour to do all my hair but was 100% worth the effort as I got beautifully defined curls
I stumbled across your videos a few days ago and LITERALLY you have changed my whole life. I have been doing my hair so wrong and treating it like shit I guess for years but thanks to you I now know what to do. You have answered every question I’ve ever had and continue to answer questions that I didn’t even know I had. You’re amaze balls. I wish you could do my hair. Lol
My hair has drastically changed as the grey hair has been growing in. I has fine straight, now it’s fine frizzy! So grateful that you are here to help me learn about the new texture of my hair!
I finger coiled, and although the sections were too small my 2a-2b hair was vamped to 2b-2c even after finger combing. I'll be trying again next wash day with larger sections, it'll probably be a quicker process too! 😁
You are adorable and I’m very glad I found your channel . I need all the tips I can get . I always blow dried my hair straight and / or used a flat iron . Now at 62 embracing silver hair , I decided to embrace my wavy/ curly hair too less is more 🌻🌻🌻
I just got my 1st curly cut last week! I LOVE it especially because of the volume it gave me. This is the 1st time I’ve actually loved my hair, I’ve been getting tons of compliments and all I can do is smile, shake out my roots & hear your voice Mel, “ The BIGGER the hair, the harder they stare!” I used to get teased and was called Mufasa so this is huge for me :) thanks for all your videos 💜 you & your sis are hilarious!
Your videos are so informative. I love the step by step instruction/explanation. I’m 43, and it’s only in the last few years I’ve started to learn how to style my curls. Straight hair was “in” when I was a teenager in the mid/late 90s and I wasted so many years hating my hair.
lol I thought of that too, but judging from my own experience, I'm sure she means "don't run your fingers through your hair" while it dries. That just undos everything you just did D:
I was making plans around 6m ago to visit the in laws in Buffalo. Told my husband all about you n how much you’ve helped me. He seen me struggle for years with products , hair salons etc... Knowing you need a good foundation haircut for curlies I’ve yet to find one. We decided to ride to your home town after I made an apt with you. Just when we figured it out I saw your video on switching careers. My heart sank . After watching I understood your dilemma n want nothing but happiness, love n all good things for you n seester . All the best on this new journey. Love ya kiddo ❤️💆🏼♀️
You are a lifesaver. I have never learned how to take care of my curls, but figured out some things a couple of years ago and thought I had it all figured out. Cut my hair some weeks ago because the length was not doing my curls any good but with your help I feel confident to grow it healthy again! Thanks so much Mell!
I finger coiled for the first time when I went for vacation to Mexico, and my hair looked so good and I got so many compliment on my hair. I usually style my hair with the denman brush with the technique Mell is teaching. I’ve been a subscriber since the beginning and I want to thank you because of you I have nice hair that’s poppin ❤️
I love to see videos where people care and love on their curls. Straight hair girl here! But my 4 kids have curls, all different curls 😍 and I always thought my girls to love their curls ❤️ so precious!
I loved both sides. For me, my patience is only for the Denman brush. I can't seem to handle finger coiling. Unless Mel could come over every wash day and do it for me! 🤣
Mel, I hope you get to see this comment. I must say thank you. I’ve been trying some of your methods and to be honest I didn’t even know I had curls until I saw you make over your ‘seesters’ hair and I’m now currently rocking the most amazing head of curls. My hair has gone a full year without having a professional cut, although I have trimmed my fringe/bangs. So I now have waist length curls and I feel like a goddess thanks to you and your knowledge. Thank you, thank you 😊
I love your ribbon curl analogy! Thank you so much for making these videos. I’m new and I adore you and your seester and I’m learning so much. My hair use to be naturally curly but now has little curl and lots of frizz. I can’t wait to get all my products on Amazon and start the transition. Thank YOU! ❤️
Thank you so much for teaching me how to care for and style my hair. I'm 53 yrs old and never took the time to learn what makes my hair look great somedays and soso other days. So many techniques are foreign to me. I didn't even know my hair was 2c/3a! I didn't know about breaking a gel cast. I've been walking around with stiff hair my whole life. I didn't know how to get volume or why you would finger coil already curly hair, more or less use that big ass diffuser. I'm starting to have fun with my very long hair and get more compliments, other than "your hair is so long"... Love your personality and your wealth of knowledge with hair. God bless you! Thanks again!
I can't believe the ultimate mystery of my 18 years in this life and the various experiments and products i used to no avail... my mistake was the way i brushed my hair. the top part of my hair is always very frizzy and loses the clear outline of a curl and the end product is so awful that i always have to half tie it or whatever just to tame that part. First day I tried to do your way of brushing and I've seen a tremendous difference, the shape of the curls is now visible again and the frizz is still there but much less than before. I think if I stick to this and focus on repairing my hair with oils and masks I'll finally solve the equation that is my hair. I'm honestly shocked that very few curly-hair youtubers pointed this out.
Hi. I just wanted to thank you. My 2021 resolution is to save money so I can buy an apartment within next 3 years. I had to drastically cut my beauty spending budget. I found your channel and it saved me so much money on hairdresser. I cut my hair pigtails cut, I bought denman brush and chelating shampoo, Aveda heat control. All your recommendations worked just great and I'm getting compliments every single day. Thank you so much for sharing information in such a great manner.
I loooove finger coiling, it’s honestly relaxing for me. I just finger coil while watching trash tv and it’s relaxing! I have the denman brush too but I feel like it doesn’t curl my tighter curls as well as finger coiling...I still try the denman brush every once in a while though because maybe I’m not using it correctly. I’m so excited for this video, I really want to know what you think! Thanks for this, Mel! ❤️
I totally agree until eventually when my arms hurt lol! Once you get the hang of it, you don't even have to look a what you're doing, its all a feeling! Thanks for watching!!
Hey Mel I'm a 41 year old combat disabled veteran that joined the military at 17 years old... I was a Tomboy growing up so my hair was ALWAYS in a bun or ponytail. I have always dyed my hair blonde (myself box), when I retired and moved to FL I went to this "REALLY KNOWN" salon to have a colorist dye my hair. Let's just say that by the time they finished it.... a few days later it was so bad that my scalp had scabs on it.. my hair was completely ruined... I cried for days.. watching your videos have changed my life and my hair! My curls along with my confidence have been making it's way back into my head and putting a smile on my face! NOW if I could just get the color right. Lol... So Thank you so much for passing on your knowledge because knowledge is power!! And who knows MAYBE one day when I grow up I'll be able to get my hair done by the Gifted Mell. 🥰 I think what you do is art and it's beautiful!! Love you Chica!!!
I LOVE YOU!!! when I tell you I have seen TONS of videos on how to finger coil my hair and every time I would try it it would hurt SO bad and results not satisfying!!! But I literally tried your technique just now and my curls look UNREAL!!!!! I love the way it doesn’t hurt and it makes it look perfectly fake! Omg you are the best!!!❤️❤️ my curls and I thank you a lot
The only thing that motivates me to finger coil is the refreshing days! Gosh, I'm prepared to stand for an hour finger coiling if that meant I wouldn't have to refresh for the rest of the week.
I don't have the patience either and the Denman brush is definitely not for my hair. I finger coil in larger clumps for the "underneath layer" and then do the smaller finger coils around the top layer of my head, gently scrunch, and it looks great through day 5, sometimes 6. In other words, I cheat.
I’m just now learning how to fix my curly hair. I was the only one in my family with curly hair so no one knew how to take care of it so my hair was just brushed out. I’m definitely going to try the finger curl technique to train my curls. Very helpful!
Mell, have you ever thought about doing online consultations? I'm willing to bet A LOT of people would come to you for advice one on one. Your videos are amazing and so helpful, but curly hair is such an amazing work of art and too much information can be hard to follow for some. And of course people can visit you in Toronto, but some people can't reach you. I would pay for one on one hair advice. I know many others would too. You should think about it! I love your videos! 😫
Kind of like Mathias does makeup I think that is his name He does one on one consultations. Of course women would pay for the one on one personal hair car advice I am not sure if she could look at your hair thru the video & without feeling it to do much justice but she might be able to. She does seem to know her stuff
If she doesn't, call Tony Robbins on her and tell him we have a reluctant entrepreneur who needs a pep motivational talk from him!! Hahaha! By the time, he is done with her, she will be on the top of her game and wealthy! She will thank you for it in the end!
I'm so impressed by the effort you put into your videos. You explain everything with such clarity! Even a girl like me (with straight hair as can be) you manage to fascinate. My besty has curls and I understand her hair routine and issues a lot better now. Thank you!
This vid was soooooooooooooo informative. I kept exclaiming and my hubs kept going, "OMG What????" And I said, This girl is changing my life! Trying to go natural so this was great. Thank you.
Honestly both sides were great. Pretty similar results. I’d say finger curling was very precise and better, but the den man brush had amazing results considering the time it would save. My question is how the heck did your curls stay soooo defined and unfrizzy for DAYS
5:38 I had to slow this down to 1/4 speed and watch it about 10 times to understand that after the FIRST LOOP... slide the curl OFF your finger. Not doing this is why I can only wrap the hair around my finger, instead of wrapping my hair around my hair, like Mell does. Going to try this tomorrow as I wait for my Denman brush from Amazon (order placed via Prime on April 6TH!!)
I tried the finger coiling technique on my hair type and I have to say, I was really impressed! I never knew that my hair have so much curl and bounce! My curls where soooo defined and I didn't had any frizz! I also use my Denman brush when I am in a hurry, but the finger coiling results are way better! Now I love my curls even more! Love you're channel!!! ❤️😘
finger coil side is so pretty omg!! and I think it had way more volume than the Denman brush side too, I dont know why you thought the opposite. both are gorgeous though
Not only are you fun to watch, you are so informative. I'm learning so much about curly hair. I've been contemplating on getting the Denman brush, but now I'm convinced! So much faster than finger coiling! I can leave finger coiling for special occasions. Thank you for this awesome video.
The truth is that i use de finger coiling technique because of you, i have the type of curls like your sister and I'm totally in love with my hair since i beginning style my curls like this. The 40 minutes extra in my wash day are so worth that i can't complain very much about the time, the results are so pretty! And in the end of the day, it's time dedicated to me so always will be the best investment .
I’ve definitely preferred finger coiling over a brush for defining my curls after this weekend. Tested it out in the snow and it lasted ~4-5 days! I’m still transitioning my hair from getting the straightening hair treatment every 6 months for 3 years to going natural with my curls. I’m loving it so far and your advice helped a bunchhhh 💚
Yes!!! when done correctly it gives such poppin curls. Your hair must be very healthy and have all the right nourishment to finger coil with just water! My porous hair could never! lol
I used to style with only water (I still do every now and then) and would have great results. However, over time my hair got damaged from the sun. I live in a very sunny, hot, and dry climate. So just be careful if you spend a lot of time in the sun.
Your hair is really getting long! Wow!! 😍😘. So beautiful! And I LOVE the diameter your natural curl forms!!! Finger coiling really does give you definition and curl “all the way to the roots”; you’re right! The den man brush separates the strands more; I think you called it frizz, but I think it’s gorgeous! “The bigger the hair, the longer they stare!” You are right again! You and your beautiful long curly hair; so captivating; I absolutely love looking at you!!! 😍❤️💕🥰❤️ Thank you for making and sharing your videos, and taking the time to explain. PS. Your color is so pretty, but your natural color is unspeakably beautiful!!! I hope you keep growing your hair out and encouraging those oh so gorgeous curls!!!
Regarding the time it took and the longevity, I liked the denman brush side as I ‘m a mom of two and never have that much time to spend on finger coiling .
I just came across your channel yesterday & I'm so hooked ! I just went out and purchased a few products that you mentioned and got me a new bonnet so I can start using it again. Your channel is so informative!! I'm on my healthy curly journey now and I found the perfect person to follow❤ thank you for your help and support to us curly girls ❤❤
Thank you so much for your tips. Denman brush is now my go to for smoother - perfect curls and coils. Amazing how much a smoothing brush helps! I finger coil on second or third day with a refresher spray. I style with the denman and smooth each curl from the brush (shingle and smooth).
Personally I love the finger coiled side! (But they both look amazing). My hair is extremely thick and dry. I am looking for ways to improve the definition and reduce the volume so I'm going to have to invest the time and give finger coiling a try.
I wish you could show how you style other types of curls, so we could see how those cosmetics and techniques work on them :) btw, love your personality, sense of humor and your hair obviously :)
Thank you so much my hair is so long that I began losing my curls that my hair looked wavy and I did the finger coiling and my hair got curlier !!! It looks so much better , new suscriber !!! 💞
Love this video! I’m definitely not interested in finger coiling, I have 2b wavy hair but wonder whether the Denman brush really is better than just using any other brush? It looks like a normal brush, what’s special about it? Any explanation would be greatly appreciated as I’m unsure if it would do anything to my hair!
It’s curved and the part holding the bristles in is very grippy texture so it allows you to put a lot of tension on the hair to really give it that spring back effect, you can also remove rows to suite your hair better.
Thank you so much! I’ve seen a lot of videos regarding denman brush technique but you are the only one that have give me a reasonAble explanation why have success and how it works!
As someone with fine straight hair, I found this fascinating. My husband has fine curly hair and it never ceases to amaze me that his hair can bounce back into a ringlet. I digress. Anyway, after retirement, he decided to grow his hair long but he never knew how to take care of it. He cut it off and donated 3 feet to Locks of Love. Now, he's growing it back and he looks like Einstein. The "just put finger into electric socket" look is not a good one and I keep telling him he needs product. Now, I know he needs a particular brush and product. I'm going to strongly suggest (force) him to watch this video and check out some of your other videos also.
I feel like each technique has its place and it depends on which look you're going for. I have always just scrunched my hair, so I wonder if I can get even better curls with finger curling.
so so so helpful! I wasn't sure which method to use and you solved it for me! Mine is damaged, transitioning and thin from babies and stress. So finger coil it is until its healthier and stronger. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much Mel! You are making me love my hair for what it is! 😭❤️❤️❤️❤️ it’s such an amazing feeling to finally accept yourself 🥰 by the way damn girl that vibrato in your voice🔥
I love finger coiled curls..I think I love the definition more so than the Denman brush. But like you, I do love an easy whip-bam-boom styling. I love your vids...easy to listen to and follow!
Thanks for this video. I've been trying to figure out which to do myself. Like you said, there are benefits to doing both and I like certain things from each option: finger coiling for more curl definition and lasting style, but the brush for more volume and speed. I think I'm going to implement more finger coiling personally because though my curls have improved, I still have some "wonky" ones 😉 Thanks again!
Mell!!! I love your channel so much!! I am a mom to two little kids, so I don't get to watch it as often as I want to. However, when I get the chance, I sneak in several back to back episodes to catch up! You always make me smile and teach me something in each video! Thanks for being you!
Mine, usually putting on gel first makes the hair glob together. I’ve been having issues using the denman and getting all of my curls more uniform. I know a lot of the styling has to do with the “feeling” of your hair. Before I damaged the curl out of my hair (essentially), I had a series of products and a hair dryer with diffuser that were all great. I knew what my hair felt like and looked like prior to drying, so that when I did dry, my curls would be poppin. But I’ve since lost that knowledge and am in the process of finding products that work with my hair and the “feeling” my hair has when properly styled before drying. I usually use gel as the very last product by prayer hands and scrunching. My original formula was 2 mousses, a light cream, and 2 gels. But it’s been a minute since that formula worked for me and I know two of the gels don’t exist anymore. Neither does the company that made my favourite hair dryer and diffuser. Hope this helps somewhat!
Well, I strongly suggest you watch this video: ruclips.net/video/pMV8JHS6HCA/видео.html I share the order of applying your products and why. My philosophy is that gel is mainly added for hold. I like to pre-set the curls (with moisturizer and brush) then glaze them with gel to hold that shape in place. In my experience brushing the gel through might make the brushing harder to do depending on what kind your using, can give crunchier results and take away volume. But you never know yourself if you don't try! Don't be afraid to experiment styling techniques on you hair, it just might revolutionize your routine!
Thank you so much! I've done finger coils for eighteen years, learned by experience, but I'd never heard of styling with a brush until last week. I love the perfect curls look, but I don't always do every curl to save some time. I'm intrigued by the Denman brush and bounce curl brush. I'd love to see some more comparisons.
I finger coiled a lot when I was transitioning and I purchased a denman brush so I mainly use that when I style my hair. I want to find a good diffuser for that next level style 🤩😄
@@ManesByMell Did you mean that with any traces of innuendo, or is it just me and my dirty mind? (I love you, BTW. My "curls" and barely 2b so there's really not much "popping", but I still watch you because you make me smile!)
Both sides look FABULOUS!! I have SUPER thick hair, so I think I will be using the Denman brush technique and maybe some finger coiling for those curls that need help with their direction... Thanks for all your videos! I am learning so much!
u r really amazing 😍 always watching u, sending u love from Egypt 🇪🇬 ❤️

You are so clear and explain very well. I've been natural for about a year now. 3b and still learning the ropes around this thing. What does 'cast' mean? Also What is gel for exactly? I have learned to just put one styling product because I am concerned of getting too much gunk. I live in the tropics so, my hair can sweat and product plus sweat and dirty hair yuk! I keep seeing some girls putting gon styling product then finishing off with gel. Please explain. Thanks Mels rock! -Melody
Thank you thank you thank you! This video also answered another question for me that I was trying to figure out; do i want more definition or more volume. As good as the finger-curl side looks, I *love* the Denman brush side! Just like we aim for a balance between protein and moisture, that side has the perfect balance of definition and volume! I appreciate your teaching (and your quirky humor) so much!
Love them both but I do love the denman side more! I currently don't use either of these methods and prefer a more natural look but I have to admit that I am tempted to purchase a denman just to see the results on my hair!
I have 2b/2c fine curls so being right-side-up, brushing the product through with a comb, and then finger coiling actually gives me scraggly waves and a wonky flat top. I found that doing a combination of upside down and side-to-side styling with the Denman brush and then finger coiling what I brushed to encourage curling at the roots helps to most for definition and volume. I do love the tip of brushing with the Denman at an angle away from the head AND hovering the diffuser around the scalp before touching the ends!
Hi mel, hoping you can help, any tips to help with menopause night sweats, i have tried wearing a bonnet, but it gets way too hot and my hair becomes a frizzy mess, i`m just using a silk pillow now, still a frizzy mess but less sweaty. any advice would be great, cheers from the uk x
I seriously wish you could do my hair for me one day Mel..... Your hair always looks amazing! I’ve noticed your hair is having a growth spert, what are you eating ? 😂 mine takes months and months to grow.... whats your secret?
You're asking the right question because what you're eating has a direct correlation to hair growth, besides genetics of course! I fluctuate with my diet all the time but i do want to share a video talking about food for hair! (on the inside, never outside) so let me know whoever reading if you would want that video give this a like and i'll leave you with this tip... i love NUTS! PS. i hope one day i can do your hair! where are you from?
That would be an AMAZING video because I believe I eat relatively healthy but my hair takes FOREVER to grow. I trim my hair and it takes over a year to grow the length of my trim back.
@@ManesByMell please Mel, could you do a video about loosening curl pattern? I know about keratin treatments and relaxers, but I believe they can be damaging to hair? Is there a way to loosening curl pattern naturally? Can you talk about relaxers and keratin treatments ?
Thank you so much for your reply and taking your time out to write back to me, I really appreciate it. Yes your right genetics and diet play a very essential part in our curly hair journeys. Thanks for your tip, I’m on my way to buy nuts now 😂 I’m from the UK 🇬🇧 .... so when I do get the chance to come to Canada 🇨🇦 I’m definitely booking an appointment with you! Many thanks again Mel.
I would love to see what your hair looks like after washing and just scrunching with water/conditioner. No extra products or styling. I’m tryna see sum🤔
i love my naked hair! I mean i can show you guys but also if you check out my IDGAF routine/mini vlog my naked curls are out to play in that video! ruclips.net/video/sGFrtgA33S0/видео.html
Olaplex 3 worked wonders for me..gave me tighter curls..by the time the bottle was done my hair was curling at the root! 🔥 Also protein...is a life saver for us weak haired curlies
I prefer the longevity of a finger coil curl because for some reason my hair does NOT always survive the night in a satin sleeping cap. I find that my curls get too squished when sleeping and kinda beyond fluffing and repair the next day. But the finger coil curl seems to be a bit sturdier. Even after day 5 your curls look divine Mell! Mine go full wonky after 3 days and I end up throwing it up for an extra day before I start over. I'm trying my best over here! Thanks for everything.
Thanks so much Mel for all the info!! I do want to try finger coiling sometime soon but will have to block out some time for it :) Quick question about the denmen brush technique - after running it through each section, do you just let it drop as is or do you scrunch it at all? Thanks!
I like the Denman brush side! I agree looks a lot more natural! Your hair is absolutely gorgeous god bless! I would love if you were able to do my hair just once,,,, thank you for inspiring me on my curly hair journey!💕
My dad saw me in my bonnet the other day and he got scared he doesn’t understand I GOTTA DO WHAT I GOTTA DO TO KEEP MY CURLS POPPING lol
I was shocked😳😂
lobaluna13 I may have rocked my bonnet during a work zoom call 😂🙌🏼
We are at a point where he says “heres your bonnet amor” love a man that respects the curls!!!
I don’t leave home without it Meaning like a getaway or visit the fam. My Satin Bonnet & Pillow are 1st items packed ! Never forget 👩🏼🦱

“Oh dont mind my gorgeous DAY FIVE hair!” Thats my day one IF it goes right!! 😫
Haha exactly my thoughts too.
CurveTheRain me too ! LolLl 😅😅😅😂😂
That’s soo true 🙈
Can u do a slow option of your finger coiling.
RIGHT
The “curling ribbon” analogy was great!
that’s your day 5 hair???? your curls are so pretty!!!!
my hair would be completely flat if i didn’t use any water + product for 5 days 😮
My hair too
mine would be a big poofball with no curl definition left
My hair would also be flat at day five. Flat and oily haha
Ong that's what I was thinking.. my hair looks terrible on day 1 after like a few hrs .. ugh!
sounds like you guys might be using deva curl 🤔
Girl I'm a hairstylist and these videos have helped me so incredibly much..thank you .I bought the Denman brush and I love teaching my curly hair clients now 😍

So I definitely say there are some little tricks out there to try.
Thank you both so much for taking the time to explain that! I completely appreciate it :)
And don't worry Mel, I'll take the RUclips logo off my dart board (disclaimer: people please know I am only joking. I'm not that bad.)
I've heard the size of the Denman can affect the curls too. A lot of people even remove sections to help with that, but it's a lot of trial and error. I tried that and wasn't terribly happy so I'll be buying a new Denman, but a lot of people are happy with it.
Viktorya Weier if you took rows out, you can put them back in 😉
Omg, the scissor on ribbon analogy makes the Denman brush make SO MUCH MORE SENSE!!
Nice to know. I am trying this tomorrow after straightening my hair alllll of my life!!
Lol
you're singing music to my ears and heart thank you for sharing i'm so happy to have helped you!! xoxoxo
My hair has drastically changed as the grey hair has been growing in.
I has fine straight, now it’s fine frizzy!
So grateful that you are here to help me learn about the new texture of my hair!
I now know why finger coiling hasn't been as effective as I thought it would be, I need smaller sections! Thank you so much Mell! 😉
Section size is EVERYTHING! Re-watch that part of the video when styling, trust me it helps! Ps you are SO welcome!!
@@ManesByMellI will! I can't wait to try it next time I wash. 😁
Now at 62 embracing silver hair , I decided to embrace my wavy/ curly hair too less is more 🌻🌻🌻
@@ManesByMell To save time, what about taking larger finger coiling sections, then separating them (carefully to avoid frizz) once dry?
"Do NOT TOUCH YOUR HAIR" - touches her hair... 😂❤️
rnattstierna touches her hair a lot lol 🤣🤣
lol I thought of that too, but judging from my own experience, I'm sure she means "don't run your fingers through your hair" while it dries.
I'd actually need her every day because I can't refresh to save my life.
Thank YOU! ❤️
Her personality was the best part of this video! loved the hair too
I prefer the Denman brush side, I love the volume! It has been a game changing tool for me, it is so much easier to evenly distribute product with it!
This was great! I use a combination of the two...Denman on the back and sides of my hair and finger coil the front/bangs.
Im learning how to finger coil and lets just say i need a lot of practice and patience. 🤦🏽♀️
Practice makes perfect!
Same here have no patience .... so I just do my bangs and the top of my hair
I've ben trying it for a month and i like it better and better every time after i shower
I’m just now learning how to fix my curly hair. I was the only one in my family with curly hair so no one knew how to take care of it so my hair was just brushed out. I’m definitely going to try the finger curl technique to train my curls. Very helpful!
Dose anyone one else love seeing people’s wash day when u need one yourself but keep putting it off till tmr
Literally me
I really like how you explain. You're thorough and patient. You sound like a teacher!
Kind of like Mathias does makeup I think that is his name
He does one on one consultations. Of course women would pay for the one on one personal hair car advice
I am not sure if she could look at your hair thru the video & without feeling it to do much justice but she might be able to. She does seem to know her stuff
Yessss
If she doesn't, call Tony Robbins on her and tell him we have a reluctant entrepreneur who needs a pep motivational talk from him!! Hahaha! By the time, he is done with her, she will be on the top of her game and wealthy! She will thank you for it in the end!
I'm so impressed by the effort you put into your videos. You explain everything with such clarity! Even a girl like me (with straight hair as can be) you manage to fascinate. My besty has curls and I understand her hair routine and issues a lot better now. Thank you!
Now I know how to finger coil properly, without pulling on my hair or getting stuck. Thank you so much!! 🥰
U speaking facts!💢
This vid was soooooooooooooo informative. I kept exclaiming and my hubs kept going, "OMG What????" And I said, This girl is changing my life! Trying to go natural so this was great. Thank you.
I like the denman brush side better, it takes less time too ❤️
I love that you use a wash day just for us and end up with 2 different types of curls on your head. Looks amazing both of them.
Honestly both sides were great. Pretty similar results. I’d say finger curling was very precise and better, but the den man brush had amazing results considering the time it would save.
My question is how the heck did your curls stay soooo defined and unfrizzy for DAYS
That’s what I’m wondering 😂
Product!! lol
I love your videos! I permed my straight hair and I haven't been able to style it until I found you! Thanks!!
Deffo prefer tbe Denman brush curls! Wow, I'm gonna try this. So liberating! ❤️
When it's wash day and you learn you've been using the denman wrong. 🖤
I've been doing everything wrong 😂
I’ve definitely preferred finger coiling over a brush for defining my curls after this weekend. Tested it out in the snow and it lasted ~4-5 days! I’m still transitioning my hair from getting the straightening hair treatment every 6 months for 3 years to going natural with my curls. I’m loving it so far and your advice helped a bunchhhh 💚
I love finger coiling! Have you ever tried doing your styling without any products? I tried using water as if it was a leave in and it totally worked.
Yes!!! when done correctly it gives such poppin curls.
Thank you for making and sharing your videos, and taking the time to explain.
Them finger coils is POPPIN
Thank you so much for your tips. Denman brush is now my go to for smoother - perfect curls and coils. Amazing how much a smoothing brush helps! I finger coil on second or third day with a refresher spray. I style with the denman and smooth each curl from the brush (shingle and smooth).
Personally I love the finger coiled side! (But they both look amazing). My hair is extremely thick and dry. I am looking for ways to improve the definition and reduce the volume so I'm going to have to invest the time and give finger coiling a try.
I love her personality!! So fun to watch! And I’m voting for the Denman side.
I would love to hear your thoughts on what is going on with Devacurl right now.... with people complaining about hair loss from using their products.
Taylor Floyd YESSS
Taylor Floyd i use their styling products and they don’t make my hair fall out
@@amiiconicnow5711 not now anyway. it has to be pretty consistent... regardless I stay away from it.
I used 3 products from deva curl and lost hair and lost a ton of curl definition:(
Devacurl ruined my curling pattern.
I did my first attempt at Denman brush hair today. I did it totally wrong but even wrong it was sooo much better than before. I'm shooketh.
New to curly girl method, on my first week so still learning so much. Thanks for explaining everything so well ❤️
As someone with fine straight hair, I found this fascinating.
Definitely a finger coil girl! Also your hair is so gorgeous!
I’m a year in to my curly journey and I have a lot more to learn!
This video really helped. Your hair always looks so great.
so so so helpful!
Oh, yeah, btw...in addition to your hair being amazing, so is your skin/make-up!! I need to know those secrets too!
I have a question: I once watched a yter put gel on first, before using the Denman Brush.
What are the pros/cons? Which one would you recommend?
Well, I strongly suggest you watch this video: ruclips.net/video/pMV8JHS6HCA/видео.html
I share the order of applying your products and why.
Exactly what i did!! And this diffuser is pretty bomb i love how versatile it is but its not just the tool, its how you use it!!
Also
What is gel for exactly? I have learned to just put one styling product because I am concerned of getting too much gunk. I live in the tropics so, my hair can sweat and product plus sweat and dirty hair yuk! I keep seeing some girls putting gon styling product then finishing off with gel. Please explain.
Thanks
Mels rock!

I have found that doing zig zag parts for my sections, paired with the Denman brush gives me a more natural look too.
Great video! I’d love to see a “plopping vs denman brush” video. I have been looking for that for forever but haven’t found it yet.
Love them both but I do love the denman side more! I currently don't use either of these methods and prefer a more natural look but I have to admit that I am tempted to purchase a denman just to see the results on my hair!
Mell! How do I keep my roots and mid shaft hairs from frizzing up (even with a gel) when diffusing??
You have the cutest personality! My curly hair is so ugly I have to blow dry it straight. Yours is perfect.
Yes, that video on what to eat! Need that!
Thanks for your tip, I’m on my way to buy nuts now 😂
I’m from the UK 🇬🇧 .... so when I do get the chance to come to Canada 🇨🇦 I’m definitely booking an appointment with you! Many thanks again Mel.
Both sides are beautiful!
Yes I was wonder thing the same thing. I think it would look so beautiful not as perfectly curled/volume
My hair isn't nearly as curly as yours but GIRL your other video has helped me. Even the diffuser one
Mell: Do NOT touch your hair while it is drying!
Me: Immediately removes hands from hair while air drying 😅
Your hair is beautiful!!! U don't even need makeup ur just a natural beauty ...lucky girl ,thank u for the info 😊
I feel like my curl form is extremely weak, even though it's uncoloured and I never use heat on it. Is there any way to enhance the form of my curls?
Even low porosity hair can benefit from a little protein now and then!
Olaplex 3 worked wonders for me..gave me tighter curls..by the time the bottle was done my hair was curling at the root! 🔥
Also protein...is a life saver for us weak haired curlies
