Rise & Shine with Albino Elephant Calf, Khanyisa while the Big Herd Sleeps

- There is little sweeter to see than a sleeping baby elephant, and this pink calf snoozes deeply on her hay bed while Lammie and Nungu opt to rest on the bana grass. Adine arrives at around 4:30 in the morning and checks in on Khanyisa, while carer Herman sleeps on our carers' stretcher bed alongside the nursery. Our carers on night duty wake every two hours to make Khanyisa's milk bottles and feed them to her through out the night, while resting in between, like the calf and her companion sheep. Lammie and Nungu enjoy sweet potatoes and bana grass nibbles when they get hungry too and fresh water is always available alongside the nursery - in easy-to-reach distance for trunks and snouts.
Adine checks in on the herd in the homestead too and spots Lundi and her son, Mambo as well as Jabulani sleeping together on their sides on one sand mound. Tokwe rests her trunk on her sleeping daughter, Pisa, while Fishan sleep-stands while resting his head and trunk on a pole, like he does sometimes against a tree out in the bush. Timisa is lying down too but it's hard to detect the other figure - we think it may be Kumbura lying down and Limpopo standing next to Fishan. As the sun rises more and it gets lighter, the elephants get a little more active as they all prepare to head out into the wilderness together for a new day.

Sometimes I forget how dedicated Herman is, especially getting up every two hours to feed Khanyisa. What a wonderful man he is. 🐘🐘❤️❤️
Herman is older, as am I. I get up about every 2 hours to...PEE! lol. Round the clock. Could also be for Herman, still it is nice dedication, not to take anything away from Herman. When one is older, sleeping is at random.

When a baby elephant sleeps, all seems right with the world. The devotion of Herman and her other carers fills my heart with gratitude. Watching her so peaceful is a beautiful gift. Thanks to all who make it possible.
Khanyisa is adorable when she is sleeping ... Such a peaceful nursery scene with Lammie and Nungu resting there. I want a Khanyisa, Lammie, Nungu wallpaper or border to give to my friend who is expecting her first grandbaby. How cute would that be in a nursery...bringing the HERD nursery to the human nurseries.
I love watching Khaynisa sleep. She really is very pink today. Once she got up and got a good morning rub from Adine she tried to get that gate opened. It's so peaceful there in the mornings. She is so peaceful, this sight really brings home the trust she has with the HERD staff. Nothing like an evening snooze followed by bottles of milk. No wonder she is growing at such a rate. Love, food and more love, it is a hard life for a pink princess. Cheers. 💜💜

A very pink baby albino elephant 💕. Khanyisa was so tinny at 4 months. Her nursery appeared much larger two years ago 😁. Now she takes up the majority of the floor space.
Glad the carer was disturbed. Waking up every two hours did exhausting.

I am so happy they are safe and protected. I have been watching herd for some time and as some famous person said. You have to know an animal before you can care for it. Quiet moments with Khanyisa & her two besties at her side, displays the love & trust they have for all of you at HERD. By chance, does Herman wake Khanyisa up for her bottles or does she get up on her own? I would find that kind of comical if she was standing there tapping her foot, thinking, “when is he gonna wake up. I need my bottle”! Thank you for giving us a glimpse of that beautiful Sunrise.

What a sweet video of the elephants sleeping! I was surprised at how quickly Khanyisa was on her feet. It amazes me how agile and graceful elephants are, in spite of their size. When will Khanyisa outgrow the need for a bottle every two hours? She's still like a newborn human!

Yes. When we watch these videos, Adine brings us the highlights.
We're seeing the results of the goodtimes, and Khanyisa's great life at the orphanage.
But what we don't see...
Is the hard work happening all around the facility 24 hours a day.
The African men and women that work at the Herd Orphanage are the backbone of this operation.
There are also several veterinarians and wildlife biologists that keep a close eye on the herd making sure they're healthy and thriving.
I read Adine Roode's bio just now.
She has had an impressive career.
She owns and operates the Herd facility.
She has been decorated as an MD and for her work to save African Elephants.
She is a hero to us all.
I myself certainly admire her for her work and her courage.
But she needs help.
She has surrounded herself with great and good people.
It takes a village... as they say.

Adine has such long days! That’s a really early sunrise. It’s so peaceful that time of morning and seeing that little yawn and Khanyisa trying to let you in the gate was so sweet. I also love Tokwe sleeping over her baby. Beautiful!
Oh she looked especially pretty and pink when she first stood and was still a bit wobbly! Her head seemed bigger too, must have been the way she was standing. Fish looked like an elephant statue until he slightly moved his leg and tail. Tokwe with her trunk over Pisa is incredibly sweet, wonder if she does that every night. WOW! What an awesome video to see the Elephants sleeping in the early morning and also sweet Khanysa too sound asleep until she sensed Adine in the room.🐘❤️ Itwas so interesting how Fishon was sleeping standing up but leaning against the pole and the others laying down. It amazed me that they are laying down instead of leaning up against a dirt pile in case they needed to get up in a hurry. But, it was an awesome video and thank you Adine for that too. Looking back at this a year later after seeing today’s video where she no longer fits in that stall and will soon no longer fit in the building! She come so far and grown into a huge, healthy, inquisitive toddler that’s truly a valued member of the herd. A true success story❤️
i suppose its hard for fishan to get up with his bad leg. so easier to sleep standing. hes a miracle, being so huge and healing as good as he did from that broken leg. thanks to herd.

You maybe meaning "dream" in sleeping.? My dog did that, it wave`s her tail, moves her paws, and kind of bark, or howled. : ). I don`t discover the translation to that word. i am thinking that thing too😊💞🐘🐑🐑🐕🦺❤.
