Hey all. Setting this as a premier so you don’t have to be in suspense about the skip day. I wanted to put in another buffer day since I lost a few around Canon City and I’m heading up into some more remote parts ahead.
There are moments in your episodes of almost lyrical grace. The intercut between Taters' return to the world as you brush up against the new, barren landscape is one. No knock on barren landscapes! I feel their call from time to time myself. Thank you for this.
thanks for the head's up--I normally watch these over my first cup of work coffee (always seemed appropriate ;-) ) but like Taters I also work in education and we had a big welcome back faculty event this morning. only now sitting down at my desk and saw that "today's" ep will be up tomorrow. Seems like a good time of the hike to rebuild your buffer a little!
Awesome video Matt! I love that you included Jen’s clips as well. I’m happy you made it back safely Jen. The trail is so much nicer for you now Matt. Take care and stay safe. God bless
Have a great teaching year Jen. Interesting how Jen and the end of the trail are near each other... every step on trail for Matt literally brings them back together.
Taters isn’t becoming one of those crusty old teachers that dreads work, she’s a (somewhat) newly minted year-round through hiker that is sad to get sent off trail! Happy first day of school, Jen!!!! There’s nothing like the mental exhaustion of the first day of being back in the classroom full time, so I’m sure you’ll sleep soundly tonight. ❤
Matt you teaser. You are just teasing us because your main squeeze, Taters, has gone to real life. I will say it again, WE WILL MISS YOU TATERS! 😢😢😢😊🌽🌽🌽🌽🐢🐢🐢🐢❤❤❤❤. Embrace the suck, Matt!👍🏔️🥾🌈🏜️🍺
Could one of the highlights for Jen on this trip be when Jen met up with that CUTE Corgis Rosy? I would think so. What a difference a day makes terrain. I bet you are glad to be out of the flats.
The two rivers joining was something I haven't seen before usually it's one muddy mess meeting up and technically you are one of those homeless. Sad to see taters go been following since the keys: now back to the solo ramblings of a madman.
Keep putting those miles behind you brother on your way back home to California. I am in Santa Cruz, Ca. Amazing the amount of police encounters in Kansas.
(Using my best "Lumberg" voice) "So yeah, if you could just go ahead and giggle like Taters a couple of times each video for us, that would be great." We miss her already!
You sure are about to walk into some pretty territory. Cripple Creek has some great coffee at the Gold Camp Coffeehouse and food. Very cool gold mines there too,( not he huge Molly mine that’s an eyesore!) Our family cabin is right off r8 the Gold Camp Rd. Not sure if that’s one of the roads you will be on but fantastic water sources up there and cool nights! Happy Trails and so wish Jen could have seen the Cripple Creek area forests.
You're wanting me to get the "heck out of Dodge" and get over into Colorado! From the Arkansas river basin where crops are irrigated to dry mesas. Love it.
To be fair things don’t improve in Colorado until past Pueblo. I asked my parents if the state has ever considered just dumping the eastern part on Kansas…
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes well now that you mentioned it. When Kansas became a state in 1861 it was going to go all the way to the foothills. The problem with this they were afraid Denver would become the capitol, so Kansas was shortened.
I think it would have been much harder on Taters to leave after seeing the gorgeous scenery that finally popped up at the end of your day. Blessings on your new school year Taters! We will miss you. 😢 Matt funny you mentioned the Norovirus after the Covid incident. I had just started following you a few weeks before. I felt so awful for you. I actually thought maybe quitting under the circumstances would be justifiable. I did pray for you. I was happy to see you had a trail angel come to the rescue. Wonderful to connect the dots from then to now. Blessings on him! God keep you safe and sound on your journey until you and Jen are back together.
I had joked for months this was going to happen but yea, kind of funny how it changed immediately after she left. At least she didn’t have to go through corn withdrawal…
Why roads near Colorado Springs? The ADTS will always use a trail when possible and create alternatives for bikes. The most likely reason why they are not used now is that they didn't exist when the ADT was laid out. The ADTS is a bit slow to change routes because we go through formal channels to get approval to use the various trails and roads, and as you mention there is a lack of volunteers to explore all the options.
You should follow the route Marshall Travis did from Littleton to Twin Lakes. Much more scenic, on trail, and way better than i70. Check out his videos. I'm in Littleton if you need anything.
I know you’re not done with this adventure, but may I suggest the North Country Trail for a future hike. It runs from Vermont to North Dakota. Happy Hiking!!
How difficult is it getting water on a daily basis from the Kansas border to Denver? Are you depending on the kindness of others to give you water or do you have go to water sources that you can always count on?
On a bike would be a very different trail. They have wheeled alts but a lot of the more memorable sections for me have been foot traffic only. It would have made Kansas a lot more manageable though
I am assuming you are going to deal with Denver and what looks like I-70 through the mountains in order to have access to food and water.....taking Hwy 50 through Salida, Gunnison and Montrose would be way shorter and much more serene, but there would be a ton of country to traverse with no access to provisions for 50 miles at a time....especially between Salida and Gunny.
The route actually appears to stick to roads trails paralleling south of 70 and then picks up the CDT just south of Greys. No resupply for 50 miles is pretty trivial. No idea why they go up to Denver other than there is that lesser used northern route that rejoins there. Plus they tend to like to hit the big cities along the way
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes The 1968 National Trails act envisioned connecting people in urban areas with historical places, wilderness and the outdoors generally, that's why the ADT goes through cities. The jog up to Denver does seem a bit excessive but when the ADT was first created there probably weren't many trails running between Pueblo/Colorado Springs and Denver so maybe that is it. The ADT is not yet part of the National Trails system, the National Park Service suggested creating National Discovery Trails as a category over 20 years ago. To do that takes an act of Congress, this legislation has been presented by the ADTS many many times but so far failed to be enacted by Congress.
There are a lot of more road based options that are significantly shorter than the American Discovery Trail. I think it’s about 3,000 miles from SF to Delaware per Google. I’ll be doing 4,800+ but I get to walk a lot quieter roads : trails along the way
@@ripvanrevs travel with a wise guy has RUclips videos on the part from Kansas City to the west end. he wants to make videos from Kansas City to the east end somewhere near the east coast. the roads in Utah and Nevada are verry tough roads. Need a car with some road clearance, and a few spares.
I bought a used truck in Pueblo, and within 5 minutes of having it an erratic homeless person was swinging a tire iron around like he was battling an invisible dragon.
I did see some teenager and his mom wandering around with a machete in a sheath but beyond that I didn’t have anything that really set off my warning bells along this route. River trail was nice and they seem to be putting a good amount of work into that surf park area. And of course the reservoir was really nice

I'll miss Jen. I enjoy all your videos but everything goes better with Taters! Best of luck to both of you.
They are a lot more fun to make when she’s around since making her laugh makes me happy
Have a great teaching year Jen. Interesting how Jen and the end of the trail are near each other... every step on trail for Matt literally brings them back together.
That's funny. You started at Pantaleo Farms. I immediately recognized the house.
It's wild how quickly the terrain changed. It looks super beautiful compared to the relative flatness of the last however long.
Great editing, loving the western views again
Love you Tater. Stay safe and enjoy your new school year.

Making your fans wait a whole extra day for episode #131. Must be a tear jerker.
going to miss tater but you'll keep us entertained till.......carry on Matt
The tandem home sweet home got me 🥲 What unfortunate timing that poor Taters had to leave just as we have such a dramatic shift in terrain 😭

People and animal encounters were certainly one of the main highlights of this trail :)

Yay Dave!!!🎉
Nice finally some interesting landscapes. For now no more boring flat land.

It was nice meeting you. Hope that storm wasn’t to bad yesterday…
It was a bit of an adventure… :)
What an abrupt transition to scenery on trail!
Today would be a perfect day to go back to the beginning of this hike and get the episodes I missed!
. . . . and just the occasional "machete man" to worry about! Classic understatement. Hike on, sans Taters! Tortoise

cool
are we hot ?
Western terrain...extreme emptiness!
You guys still near Pueblo? I'm in West Pueblo down near the Pueblo Lake.
We’re over near Denver now sadly
Taters failed to show us the statue of John Wayne at SNA.
How long was that concrete walkway be well

Who is the thru hiker you mentioned? Buck 30’s??
Buck30. I think he mostly posts on trail journal
Well your not in Kansas anymore!
Was Taters at O'Neil Park?
We move between a few campgrounds
Man idk if I can watch without Jen 😢

I don’t disagree. I usually get annoyed when I see them. Not sure I’ll do this again.
