Batting first, India were reeling at 16/4 and then Azharuddin took centre stage and took the kiwi bowling by the horns. He counter-attacked with some splendid shots and not to mention his trademark wristy strokeplay.
Though wickets kept falling around him, Azhar stood firm and brought up his 21st Test century. India were all out for just 208 and Azharuddin was unbeaten on 103 - one of the greatest innings played a captain in Test cricket.
Just come here after Azaharuddin said in Sports Tak live show that this knok is one of his favorite century in his career.. 😊😊😊
When Azhar came into his own, he was more pleasant to watch than any other batsman and dangerous than Sachin..just my opinion

my favourite batsman till now. He was class apart. His batting style was like an artist painting on a canvas. His wristy shots both at the off and on sides cannot be produced by any other batsman even today. Such a beautiful batting style. I feel sad what he did with his career.

When Azharuddin plays his shots, it looks like they are easiest things to do on earth. Being such a wristy player, his shots pack lot of punches but look effortless. Even if he makes zero, he could compensate it with amazing fielding - such a fine player. Getting into politics, match fixing - why he had to do all these, he could have been a legend and idol anyways.

Words in a dictionary cannot be found to express the sheer talent and grace with which Azhar batted,he was such an attraction for budding cricketers in the late 80s & 90s,I use to bunk school to watch his batting,purchase videos vhs tapes to watch his bat lift & rubber band wrist work in slow motion on he VCR.Truly very well said by Gary Kirsten that its Azhar & Sehwag who are his favorite batsmen from India.Probably the only cricketer in the world who had a calming personality and never celebrated a hundred with a jump or a fist thumping,very humble - just use to thank Almighty above and the crowd around.

Yes you are right right bro he never celebrated his 100s and fifties. Most great thing is he never think about his own records like 100s even there is lot of chance. He use to score in jet speed when he reaches 80, 85 in ODI, if he thought about his own records he might have done 30 ODI centuries in his 300 ODI matches.
Nowadays most of the players they celebrate hundreds with high jump and shouting loudly, showing bat their wife/family/girlfriend..
You’re playing match for your county, not for your family, ok you can celebrate your hundred with your family also but not on field.
This is the difference between 80/90’s time cricketers and present cricket players.

Few trivia of Azhar's career :
1) This innings marked his 2nd last test century, last being on his last innings against South Africa before match fixing scandal ruined his career.
2) Only player to score 3 consecutive test centuries in his first three tests.
3) Only 4 test players till date have conversion ratio from 50 to 100 better than 1 (other being Bradman, Smith & Kohli : min. qualification 20centuries). Azhar scored 22 100s & 21 50s.
4) Played 99 tests & his highest score being 199.
5) Held record for most number of catches in ODIs till his retirement (now sits at 3rd).
6) Had his career not ended abruptly, he could have been 1st player to score 10,000 ODI runs.

One of greatest batsman of Indian cricket.
Azhar is the most stylish player in 80s & 90s, greatest player ever and ever, flick shots, cover drive shot he played all kind of shots, also he played helicopter shot against bowler lance Klusner (S.A) in 1996.
Nowadays also we have good cricket player, but till now I didn’t see that kind of flick shot from any batsman..! My favorite batsman till now and ever..also one thing that time in india team no more any all rounder or no any low order batsman, If 4 or five wickets down early pressure always on Azhar or Ajay jadeja..
But nowadays you see we have more all rounders, if india loss 6 wickets early in any format also have wining chances. Example recently test match against Australia R. Pant/ R. Jadeja, W. Sunder, R ashwin, even S.Thakur, Shami Bumrah can bat at the end. This is the difference that time Indian team and now present team..

Go figure out why India lost this match. Before Dravid and Ganguly debut in the team, it was Tendulkar, Kumble, Srinath, Ajay Jadeja (to an extent) and Robin Singh who would try to win matches.
Search for youtube videos on Nayan Mongia and Manoj Prabhakar who would loose matches from winning positions. Azhar would let this happen. Also you dont have many match winning innings of Azhar. Dont go by the portrayal of Azhar in the Emraan Hasmi movie lol.
