I started liking VVS Laxman because he played like Azhar even though Laxman's off side game was superior to Azhar's and he was no lesser on the leg side either, but VVS could never smack those huge sixes like Azhar or field like Azhar or captain like him. Azhar was a versatile genius.
Few cricketers are as multi-dimensional like Azhar was. A superlative and elegant batsman, an astute captain, a matchless fielder and a statesman.
It is a pity his name got embroiled in controversies, for some of his faults and some of others'.
To me he remains the best Indian cricketer ever along With Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar.

Azharuddin in short Azhar, growing up he was my childhood hero and by far the most favorite Indian cricketer from 80s to 90s. No matter what, the artist in him forever will be etched in the echelons of cricket history 👍. Happy to see the respect he truly deserves post the court judgement.
